The mind is a fearsome thing, don't tread on it.
In 2020 an unknown scientist, became public with the Grid System. The Grid System is mysterious scientists digital universe, an artificial digital environment created to form a "Newtonian Playground" where all thought and experimentation can proceed at a vastly accelerated rate over what people can achieve in the real world. Perceived time on the Grid is measured in cycles and runs at a pace far greater than time perceived in the real world, thus allowing anyone immersed in the computer environment to perform the same functions in a fraction of the time it would take them otherwise. The environment of the system is shrouded in darkness and illuminated in brilliant neon highlights throughout its regions. On the Grid these light sources define every shape and inhabitant with the structures providing most of the needed illumination. Without a sun in the Grid System, all programs provide their own light from internal energy, in much the same way as their buildings do. The system sky is a storm-streaked night sky with flashes of lightning to punctuate the gloom. Glowing data transmission beams knife through the sky in some of the outer reaches of the Grid System, connecting the Grid to the outer servers.
The Grid System was initially programmed in 2002 on some former Google servers that had been disconnected from the original mainframe and moved to a hidden location. There in secret, the scientist was left to create his pre-eminent digital experiment, shaping it into a virtual universe within the machine. Through a process of digitization she was able to actually transport the entirety of her being into the universe itself, thus granting her first hand access to the data processing speeds of the system and vastly accelerating the growth of her digital creation. Initially she copied the program to her super computer in order to increase the over all size of the system. There she turned her humble Grid into a digital universe, complete with a city housing a vast number of basic programs which are basically digital people. However, her dream was much larger than that.
With the worlds resources slowly coming to an end she wanted to give people an option. Inside this mainframe you could live. Food was programed in and the data could be copied, so no food or ingredients ever ran out. All the vehicles run of the Grid so no pollution and the environment is synthetic, so there was no need to worry about the system dying. It was an all around better option and many people moved into the Grid System. They preferred living in the virtual world over the real one. The world was peaceful at first. However, that was not to last.
The Grid System had many features. To enhance physical abilities, the ability to create structures, the ability to use basic functions of the internet in a physical way and even to create new programs. The problem was not many people were that compatible with the Grid. However, some where. This created a radical group called 'Malware'. This group is made up of high system compatible people who believe they are better than others. They took over cities, created prisons for what they called 'Lesser Program' citizens and have killed thousands.
This was not what the scientist wanted. She herself was not compatible with the system at a level to do anything. However, she found five people with such high compatibility that the system classified them as 'Half Programs'. This development made the possibility of the mysterious scientist keeping the Grid System up and running and still being the best option for humanity. She decided to gather them and ask her to fight as her team of guardians. Will they say yes or leave her to fight herself?
