Magnolia Jones
This character is one I've had in my head for a couple years now, I'd like to incorporate her in a novel I'm writing, so any critiques or advice you have would be so, SO appreciated! I want to make her as interesting and fun to read about as possible. I think she would also be great for f/f role plays, so if she sounds like a character you'd like to write with, let me know!
Basics
Name: Magnolia Jones
Age: 26
Ethnicity/Nationality: White, North American
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Occupation: Co-owns an art gallery
Appearance
Height: 5'8
Weight: 150 lbs
Hair: Cropped to shoulder length, a red/mousy brown color. It's also rather thin and fine.
Eyes: Dark brown
Body: Rather tall, but full figured
Attire: Sundresses and sandals when it's warm, long pants/jeans, boots, and long sleeve t-shirts when it's cold. She owns a worn bomber jacket that she wears as well, as well as copious amounts of cardigans.
I don't have an image for Magnolia, but I've always pictured her to be tall but not quite as slender. She has freckles all over her face, dark enough to where they're fairly noticeable. She also has incredibly bad eyesight (to the point where I think she may be legally blind), so she's always wearing her overly large, thick glasses. Her eyes are rather large for her face, as her mouth and nose are on the smaller side.
She has very long fingers and hands, and her feet quite match that, her shoe size being an 11 US women's size. She talks rather quietly, but once she's more comfortable and relaxed she's one of the loudest ones there.
Overall, I picture Magnolia as very Plain Jane, but she has a very large personality.
Personality
She's quite shy, especially when meeting new people, but once she's comfortable with a person or even in a situation, she's larger than life! She has a very dry sense of humor, but she's also quite clever and sort of... Hermione-esque; rather, she's sort of a know-it-all, and loves to learn for the sake of learning, especially in adulthood. She's also an incredibly loyal friend and very, very kind. (I think she would be a Hufflepuff)
Romantically speaking, she's not terribly into lots of physical affection and more about words and actions. She loves both sexes, but has a heavy preference for women as far as romantic relationships go. Overall, she gets along best with people that challenge her, make her think, that can make her laugh, and that can make her feel at home.
Magnolia is also rather artistic, and enjoys talking about such things like art history, art/writing mediums, and even music, though she doesn't play an instrument nor does she sing very well.
History
Magnolia actually comes from a very cohesive family. Her father is an OBGYN and her mother is a trauma nurse, and they both work in the same hospital. She has three brothers, being the only girl and the oldest.
Her first brother, Adrian, is 24 and works in accounting at a company that produces lumber. He's very into numbers, highly analytical, and doesn't get along quite so well with Magnolia (though he loves her a lot).
Her second brother, Rowan, is 21, and is in his senior year of college with a major in Art History and a minor in Sculpture. Magnolia gets along best with Rowan because they share a love for the arts and creativity, and he very much matches her sense of humor and likeness of other people.
And her last brother, Daniel, is 17 and is almost ready to graduate high school being in his senior year. All of the older children are moved out and have their own lives, so they rarely see Daniel unless they come home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, though they still like to keep in touch.
I recognize that her family isn't quite as important as Magnolia, but I thought it may be a good idea to give you an idea of what her family is like and her relation to them.
She's the only one in the family who isn't straight, though she heavily suspects that Daniel isn't entirely truthful about his own sexuality. Coming out to her parents was incredibly difficult as they both are rather conservative in their political views and values, but they accepted her and love her just as much and for that her relationship with them grew even stronger.
Magnolia took a lot of art classes in middle school and high school to the point of requesting to re-take some of them. Her worst subject was always math, but she managed to get at least a C+ in most of the classes. Academics weren't really interesting to her until she went off to college where she took more in depth art classes, art history, literature, and she discovered that she weirdly liked botany and other specialized parts of biology. For that, most of her art is about nature, though she's learned to draw faces and people as well.
She didn't have many friends growing up, being shy and never being that interested in making them. Her interests were more centered around books, drawing, and playing make believe and a lot of her friendships were with her brothers, and those friendships carried over into adulthood.
Her family lives in Eugene, Oregon and her parents were both graduates of University of Oregon so it was expected that she, too, attend. Instead, she found a college in Ashland, Oregon, Southern Oregon University, where she graduated in Honors with a degree in Painting and a double minor in Art History and British Literature.
Speaking of literature, she very much loves to read, her favorite authors being Charlotte Bronte and Oscar Wilde, though she has a huge love for trashy romance novels though she admits it to absolutely no one. (Even hiding them under her pillows or in her sock drawer so no one would know)
Overall, she grew up rather privileged, but doesn't really care to discuss it or have it bleed into her own adult life. She co-owns an art gallery with one her friends from college, but she doesn't rely on any of her family members for financial assistance, instead wanting to be independent even if that means buying her clothes second hand or eating chicken flavored ramen noodles for a few weeks.
And, most importantly, she has a black cat she named Bellatrix (and she's true to her name), and a little Jack Russel Terrier she calls Terrence (because he just seemed like a Terrence). She also is a huge coffee drinker, and very much a morning person, preferring to get up with the sun.
Skills
She's an excellent painter and drawer of profiles, and she has an extensive knowledge of books and music and loves to discuss it with other people if they're just as knowledgeable about it as she is. Beyond that, her other skills involve baking boxed cakes and brownies without burning them (it took a lot of practice), and being a decent roller skater.
Magnolia's Origins
Magnolia Jones is actually a variation of people I've known in real life as well as some things being borrowed from my own life/interests. Each of her qualities are things I've loved about friends, lovers, and even parts of my own family and I think that's why I've grown so attached to her. She represents a lot of what makes my own life beautiful and with that I find a lot of comfort in writing about her, so this character profile was incredibly fun to do.
I sincerely hope you like her just as much as I do, but if you have anything to add or things that may need to be changed, please, please tell me. Feedback is so important. Thank you!
