Loyalty in Unity

@ImpossibleGirl

Barrin's sword clinked against his armor as he walked along the cobbled road, watching the commoners around scramble by, wrapped up in their own little worlds. Mothers and fathers dragged their children to school while adults scurried in every which direction, trying to get to work. Other knights walked the streets, nodding out of respect at Barrin when he past, their eyes scanning the world before them for any troublemakers.

Barrin glanced upwards at the towering castle before him, made of great black marble with peaks reaching towards the sky. He sighed, stretching his arms upwards towards them before dropping them back down by his side. He shut his eyes and breathed in deeply before opening them again.

His parents had warned him that something was going to happen, and soon. His parents had told him that there could be a war on the horizon.

He knew what they meant, really.

He was not a simple soldier who knew how to swing his sword. He had been raised to be a king, raised to be a wise leader that knew how to deal with war and rebellion.

Barrin swallowed and pushed open the great oak doors, stepping into his castle. He knew that his parents were making a hard decision.

"Mother," he called, walking into the throne room where his mother sat, a thin gold band encircling her forehead. There was no need for Naomi to wear an obscene crown; everyone knew she was queen.

"They are due to arrive soon," Naomi said, standing up and gathering her skirts, walking towards him with a neutral expression on her face. She paused once she reached the bottom of the steps and was standing next to her sun. She reached out and smoothed out his hair before pursuing her lips.

"You know... if I had any other choice I wouldn't make you do this," Naomi said quietly. "I'd let you choose who you fell in love with and who you would marry."

"I know, mother," Barrin said slowly.

"Good," she said and offered him her elbow. He hooked his arm through hers and lead her back to the entrance of the castle, to wait for the carriage that would hold his fiance.

The bumpy ride from Etaleth to Vanguard was not one June was enjoying, to say the least. The carriage that had come to escort her rocked and teetered along the road, and was far from the relaxing ride she needed. After all, she was about to meet her fiance for the very first time. It goes without saying that she would be beyond nervous.

Letting out a small sigh, June fiddled nervously with the fabric of her skirts. Her parents had warned her this was going to happen, had expressed how sorry they were it had to be this way. However, that didn't make the situation any less nervewracking. After all, this was the person she was going to be married too, the person she would spend the rest of her life with! And she hadn't even met the guy yet!

Finally, the castle came into view, and the sight merely made her heart poud that much harder. She wasn't ready for this. She wasn't ready!

Time didn't seem to care though, as all too soon, the carriage stopped before the castle doors. Swallowing thickly as the driver opened the door for her, June forced a weak smile to her face as she climbed out of the carriage. The fabric of her cobalt blue dress fell softly around her, and she took a moment to straighten it out. Her mother had insisted she dress nicer for the ocassion, so June picked out a simple blue dress wirh a scoop neckline, and three-quarter length sleeves. The fabric hugged her figure nicely but modestly, and was quite comfortable to be honest. Her hair was pulled partway back in an attempt to tame the blonde tresses, and simple brown boots adorned her feet. Her outfit was simple, yet presentable. However honestly, she couldn't care less what her fiance thought of it. She was not the least bit happy about this arrangement, and she was not doing this for him. She was doing this for her family and her home. That was the only reason she was here.

"This way, My Lady." The voice of the carriage driver snapped her out of her nervous thoughts, her head whipping around to look at the older man. Blue eyes flitted down to her bags that he had already gotten, and June felt a tinge of guilt at making him wait. She hadn't meant to take so long. "Ah, thank you." Chuckling nervously, June followed the older man to the large castle doors. The sight of them made her heart hammer that much harder in her chest, as she knew behind those daunting doors laid her future. It was intimidating, which was an unfamiliar feeling for June.

As one of the guards noticed them coming, he swiftly opened the door for them. With a deep breath, June walked through those daunting doors, the dark marble of the castle walls glinting slightly in the light. She had to admit... the entryway was beautiful. Everything was beautiful so far.

What caught her attention however, was not the grand castle nor its gleaming walls. Instead, it was the regal woman standing a few feet in front of her, with an equally regal yet large man attatched to her arm.

'That must be the Queen. And he must be...' June didn't even need to finish that thought she knew who he was. Prince Barrin. Her fiance.

She tried not to shudder at the thought.

Remembering her mothers instructions to try be polite and well mannered, June gave a small, polite curtsy in greeting. "Your Majesty. It's an honor to meet you." The words felt oddly formal on her tongue, yet her stance was proud and her voice confident as always. It was obvious she was from royal blood, despite her hidden fiery nature. While it was hard for her to act so regal and lady-like, she did want to make a good impression. It was her duty as princess after all, and her kingdom needed her to do this. As much as she hated this, she couldn't just turn her back on them. That would be cruel.

Barrin almost snorted when he saw June. She was small, no, tiny. Galene and Casimir were only slightly shorter than her and everyone else was much taller.

Barrin had failed to dress very nicely for the occasion, having come back from the barracks that morning. He wore simple armor, not one to be worn into battle, but lighter iron armor. His mother glanced at him with pursued lips as if to tell him to behave before unhooking her arm and walking forward to the princess. Barrin clasped his hands behind his back and stared at her.

He had heard much about the firey princess from the other kingdom. His father had joked that perhaps he would find the one to keep him reigned in within his fiance. He highly doubted it. If he wanted to, Barrin was certain he could ignore her for the entire time she was there.

The queen stopped in front of June and smiled politely at her."It is quite an honor to meet you as well," Naomi said formally. "Please, allow me to introduce you to Prince Barrin, my son and your future husband."

Husband.

Hah!

Barrin gave a polite bow nonetheless, his armor clinking slightly as he bent over, dropping his eyes to his feet before lifting them up to peer at June again.

There was the sound of feet and Naomi whirled around, opening her mouth to say something when a flurry of limbs tore through the room, shrieking laughter following.

Barrin smirked and seized up a ball of cotton to reveal his youngest sister, who gave a surprised yelp.

"Put me down!" she wailed, flailing at him. "Put me down!"

She did not wear a dress but rather a simple pair of cotton pantaloons and a tunic. Most couldn't force her into a dress if they tried.

"Galene, Barrin," Naomi hissed at them both. Galene turned her head to see the princess and pouted as Barrin set her on the ground. She gave a quick curtsy, muttered, "Princess," and tore off again.

Bright blue eyes flitted to the Prince as the Queen introduced him, however she doubted either of them needed such a formal introduction. She was sure he had heard about her already, just as she has heard about him. However, June had barely listened to anything her father had to say for several reasons. One, she was greatly opposed to this had been trying to make that clear by tuning him out, and two, she wanted to size up the Prince for herself. Other peoples opinions mattered very little to her.

June suppressed a shudder as the word 'husband' left the Queens lips, forcing herself to smile politely up at the Prince, giving a small nod in greeting as well. She had already curtsied, there was no need to do so again. Opening her mouth to greet the Prince, June was cut off by the sound of laughter, followed by a flurry of limbs that left her blinking in surprise.

That must be one the younger princesses.

Despite her best efforts to be detached and formal, June couldn't help the crooked grin that formed on her lips as she watched the two siblings, unable to stop the quiet, amused chuckle she emitted. She had to admit, the girl was cute. Although June noticed that she wasn't much shorter than her. But that wasn't much of a surprise. Almost everyone was taller than she was.

The blonde caught the young princesses name as Queen Naomi chided them, and June watched with a grin as the girl was put back on the ground a moment later. This was Galene, then. The youngest of the six siblings.

"Hello." June chuckled, giving a small nod in greeting, and watched as she tore out of the room again. "She seems very lively." she said a moment later, turning to speak to the Queen and Barrin once more. However it was obvious by the amused smile on her face that she didn't see that as a bad thing, and was in no way offended by this. In fact, Galene reminded her of one of her own sisters just then. The way she seemed to squeal and run about, and even the way she wore pantaloons instead of a dress. Granted, she seemed older than Eliza, however the point still stood.

Barrin offered June a small, polite smile in response to her comment on Galene. Galene was the smallest child and by far the most reckless and full of energy, always tearing in every which direction in search of something to do, something to play with.

"Apologizes for Galene," Naomi said formally, examining the younger woman. "She can be a handful. Come this way," Naomi added, walking back towards the throne room. "My husband and hopefully the rest of my children may be waiting."

Barrin hovered for a second, unsure if he should fall into step with either his mother or his fiance. Naomi took his elbow again and he followed her, breathing heavily through his own nose.

At least Galene had managed to lighten the mood briefly; he highly doubted anyone could be too angry at her. She was young and innocent and always curious, getting herself into too much trouble for her own good.

The hallway to the throne room was rather plain, with only a soft blue carpet paving the way towards it. Inside the throne room were two large chairs, ornate and decorated in what appeared to be gold. There were three shorter chairs on either side of the large chairs, most likely for the siblings to sit in.

Behind the chairs hung the flag of Vanguard, a shield with a dragon twisted around it, with one claw on top of the shield and another clutching a sword. Its beady eyes stared intently at those who gazed upon it, as if challenging them.

A man sat in one of the larger chairs while several other people milled around. Barrin could pick out his siblings in the mess, as well as his in-laws.

Naomi cleared her throat and the room cleared, leaving the royal family standing. Naomi turned around, spinning Barrin around with her and smiled tartly.

"My husband, Raleigh," she said, gesturing to the man with a similar gold band around his head. He bowed politely.

"Wonder," a rather large woman gave a polite curtsy, "Nartai," a man considerably thinner than both Raleigh and Barrin bowed, "Nataxie," a voluptuous woman gave a small curtsy, "and Casimir". Casimir appeared rather thin and pale, but bowed to June nonetheless, smiling slightly, enthused to see someone new in the castle.

"And you've already met Galene," Naomi added as the young girl was finally momentarily herded into the throne room. She hopped up the steps and stopped beside Casimir. She waved at June, grinning.

"Oh no, it's fine. She reminds me of one of my sisters, actually." June smiled. The little girls intrusion actually helped to lighten the mood, and June felt a little more at ease. Granted, she was still a little more formal than she normally was, however that simply couldn't be helped due to the situation. June followed silently behind the two as Queen Naomi led her to where the royal family was waiting, her heart starting to beat nervously in her chest. After all, this was the royal family, her soon to be in-laws. Even though she usually didn't care what others thought, it was still nerve-wracking.

As they entered the throne room, June's eyes flitted about, taking in the soft blue carpet and the ornate chairs at the front of the room. Her eyes inevitably fell on the Vanguardian flag, the dragons beady eyes seeming to stare straight into her soul. Despite the challenging feel it gave off however, June was not intimidated. Instead, she felt a strong determination to show she was strong as well. That no matter what the royal family thought of her, no matter what happened, she would still stay true to herself. Don't be mistaken, the small blonde still held a lot of respect towards Vanguard. However, in the end, she was doing this for her family, and for her home. If she forsake herself during this time simply because she wanted them to like her, then she would never forgive herself.

As the Queen and Barrin turned around, June suddenly found herself facing the entire royal family, her eyes flitting to each person as Queen Naomi introduced them, nodding politely at each greeting and returning each bow and curtsy with a curtsy of her own. Her eyes flitted to Galene as she was quickly ushered in, trying desperately to hide the grin that threatened to form on her lips as the young princess waved at her. It didn't work.

Letting out a quiet chuckle, June smiled at the princess before turning back towards the rest of the royal family. "It's an honor to meet all of you." she said, giving the royal family a polite smile. "And thank you for opening your home to me. My father and mother say thank you as well and give their greetings, and so do the rest of my family." They had insisted she give that message to them, even if it was a tad embarrassing.

She wasn't exactly sure what to do next though... June wasn't used to this kind of thing. Being in the presence of another royal family, getting used to their customs.. It was strange, and oddly formal. Oh the formalities... how she hated them. She could just be herself at Etaleth, even with the civilians. Sure, she still had to be somewhat mannerly and polite, but everyone already knew her well there. Here... here it was like she was starting all over again. Needless to say, she was out of her element, and was still adjusting to the whole situation.

She only hoped her social graces weren't too rough...

The royal family nodded in response. Everyone seemed to be waiting for something to happen.

Galene offered her services in creating that next thing by turning to Casimir and stealing the book that he had hid behind his back and running out of the room. Casimir wailed in response and grabbed frantically at his younger sister before chasing after her, albeit much more slowly and with a lot more puffing. Nataxie seemed to take the opportunity to hurry after the two younger children to ensure that they weren't making anymore trouble than necessary.

"Perhaps you should show June around the castle," Naomi said to Barrin.

The man glanced over June once more before nodding formally and stepping up to her. She was an entire head shorter than him and then some.

He crooked his elbow at her, wondering if she would understand.

June shuffled awkwardly, hating how all eyes seemed to be on her. She hoped they weren't waiting for her to do something... I mean, what did they expect? For her to do some sort of jig or something?

Thankfully, Galene offered a distraction at that moment, lighting the mood a bit once more. June watched in amusement as Casimir and Nataxie chased after her, an amused crooked smile forming on her lips. 'Don't laugh June. Don't. Laugh.' Despite her best efforts, a small chuckle still fell past her lips. She had to admit, she was already beginning to like that girl.

The Queens voice jerked her back to attention, her eyes flitting back to the rest of the royal family. Ah, that was right. She didn't know her way around the castle yet.

Her eyes settled on Barrin, watching as she stepped up to her, her head tilting back a bit to look up at him. Well... he was certainly tall. Yes, almost everyone seemed to be taller than her, however Barrin seemed especially so. Still, it didn't intimidate her in anyway. It simply made her stand taller and straighter, determined not to be underestimated because of her lack of height.

Her blue eyes flitted down to the elbow Barrin offered to her, exhaling softly through her nose. Should she take it? She was half-tempted to refuse and tell him she could walk on her own, as she had always been an independent person. However, with the King and Queen watching her, as well as half of their children and in-laws, June knew she would just look rude. So, after a brief moment of contemplation, June hesitantly took his arm.

"Thank you." Forcing a polite smile to her face, June tried not to be so stiff, however she simply couldn't help it. This was just so odd for her... She was sure if her family was here, every single one of her siblings would be snickering at her. Her lips pursed slightly at that thought as she realized sooner or later, they would all have to get together.

Great. June just couldn't wait...

Barrin gave her a forced smile in return, already beginning to dislike the arrangement. He was sure that if they weren't being forced to marry one another, he and June could have got along fine. Perhaps if this was a simple trade agreement and the two of them had to work something out, they would find one another friendly enough. But this, this wasn't something that could be liked.

Barrin was not looking forward to having to marry the woman at his side and then possibly have children with her.

That was the most uncomfortable thought he had had in a while.

He walked forward slowly, unsure how fast she usually went. Barrin could almost hear Galene and Casimir giggling to one another, peering at him through the handrails and finding his stiff movements and his neutral expression to be quite unlike him.

He led her to the stairway and walked up them slowly, finally dropping his arm because it was getting irritating and he was sure June wouldn't mind. His parents were out of earshot and eyesight so they wouldn't nag him.

"Look," he said, turning and frowning at her once they got to the top of the steps. "I don't like this arrangement any more than you do. I'd rather have a simple peace treaty between our kingdoms, but that's not doable. So we're just going to have to face the fact that we're getting married and live with it."

For the rest of our lives.

Walking alongside Barrin, June's movements were stiff and robotic, and her arm in his did not feel the least bit comfortable. She was itching to drop it, however did not want to seem rude in front of the King and Queen. This whole arrangement was slowly killing her on the inside, trying to force her into a box she was desperately trying to stay out of.

The quiet that followed as he led her to up and the stairs was suffocating, and she desperately wanted to say something -- anything -- that felt like her, instead of simply trying to be polite and formal.

When Barrin finally dropped her arm, June figured they were out of eyesight and ear shot, and let out a small breath. Maybe now she could start an actual conversation with the Prince. About what though, she wasn't sure.

He beat her to it though, turning to face with with a frown etched on his face. His words made one small eyebrow arch up, and a frown slowly formed on her lips as well. "Do think I'm so ignorant as to not already know that?" she replied, an almost challenging look in her eyes as she crossed her arms over her chest in a similar fashion as he was. Telling her something so obvious... did he honestly expect she was so naieve to not have already prepared herself for this, just as he has? "I'm perfectly aware of the situation, thank you. I don't need you stating the obvious." she added, standing tall and straight as she looked up at him. Well, as tall as she could, at least.

"You could show me around the castle, so I know my way around. That would be a more useful use of our time." she finished, uncrossing her arms and looking up at him expectantly. Like she was really going to let him get away with talking down at her like that. As if.

Barrin did his best not to scowl down at the princess. They had been in each other's company for mere minutes and already they were tugging at one other's nerves, irritating one another. He figured he should have known that she too knew how important this marriage was and that that was the only reason they were doing this. One part of him, however, had wanted to make it clear to her that this was a formal and strategic marriage, with no emotion necessary or included.

He wanted to snap at her to ask the maids if she was curious as to where everything was. Barrin was not here to take her hand and show her everything she had to see. Perhaps if they met in a different context, he would be more willing to show her around but right now it felt like they were both fighting to see who was the stronger one, who would be the one to control the relationship when they both had so little say in its creation.

"This way to the bedrooms," he said dully, and headed up another set of stairs, not bothering to see if she could keep up with his pace.

For a moment, the two seemed to be in a staring contest as she waited for him to speak, with June refusing to back down. And while he may try to hide it, June could tell he was irritated. Anyone who was watching them could plainly tell, as the sour mood was practicallu palable in the air.

Oddly enough though, this small argument made her muscles relax and it was easier for her to breathe. This was what she needed. Not because it was stressful or argumentative, but because it was real. Neither of them were putting on an act, and that's all that she wanted right now. She wouldn't be able to take keeping up a constant facade.

The corners of her lips quirked upward into a very small smirk as he began to show her around the castle, quickening her pace to keep up with him. Despite her small stature, June was quick, and could easily keep up with the fastest of men and woman alike. In fact, her petite figure aided her in her speed, and it was one of things that made her an excellent swords woman.

But June would have ran to keep up with him if she had to, simply because she now saw this as a silent challenge to see who was stronger. And June was never one to back down from a challenge.

Speaking of swords... "Are the training grounds nearby?" she asked, turning her head to look up at them as they made their way to the bedrooms. At Etaleth, the training grounds were set up closer to the castle, however it was still off the castle grounds. She spent most of her free time there, so she wondered if it was different here in Vanguard.

"Yes," Barrin said, making his way across the bedrooms before gesturing to a washroom and mentioning it. He pointed to a few others before turning on his heel and making his way down the steps, pointing out the library, the maid's quarters, where his mother worked, where his father worked, offices of his siblings...

He gestured at rooms and gave a brief title of their purpose but never bothered with detail. June was to be around for a while; she could figure it out if she had to. He saw none of his family for the time being, which was fine with him. Naomi and Raleigh were probably fretting over the latest development in trade, Wonder was more than likely aiding in it, Nartai and Nataxie were probably out and about in the city, Casimir was probably in the medic's room for something, and Galene was more than likely getting dirty.

Indeed, when he stepped outside to show her the gardens, he spotted his youngest sister sitting among the flowers, tunic dirty with a shovel in hand.

"Galene," Barrin called, forgetting June for a second, "what are you doing?"

He trotted over to her and bent down, his sword clicking against his armor. The youngest princess glanced up and grinned before pressing her palm into his face, smearing it with dirt.

She laughed as Barrin grumbled, though a smile snaked its way across his mouth as he returned the favor, gathering up dirt between his fingers and dragging his fingertips across her cheek. Galene snorted and rubbed off her dirt before digging further into the ground, pulling up the roots of a weed.

"Are you still working on this?" Barrin asked, glancing around. Casimir occasionally aided his younger sister in planting and the two would often show up dirty, grinning at their mother who would sigh and haul them both off to wash.

"Yeah," Galene said, using her shovel to dig up a few more weeds before standing up and dusting off her knees, spraying dirt everywhere. Barrin recoiled and stood up, raising an eyebrow at his younger sister.

For someone as old as she was, Galene seemed to cling to childish enthusiasm. Being the sixth child, her chances of getting the crown were slim, yet he couldn't help but feel she was not mature at all.

"Well aren't we chatty." June sarcastically replied, rolling her eyes as the prince continued to be difficult. They may not be getting along well right now, but least she was trying to talk to him! He just seemed to want to ignore her as he quickly showed her around the castle. If he thought he was going to get rid of her so quickly though, then he had another thing coming. June was not having that.

As the walked out into the gardens, June took a subtle deep breath and closed her eyes briefly, glad to be outside again. The air was fresh with the feagrence of the flowers in the gardens, reminding of the gardens at her own home in Etaleth. It was like a maze out there, with tall hedges and orchards towards the back. Her brothers and sisters would often play hide and go seek or tag when they had free time, and it wasn't uncommon to hear the laughter of children coming from the greenry.

A tinge of homesickness hit her then and she quickly opened her eyes. She refused to go down that road. Not now, at least.

Her eyes flickered around the area, taking in the vibrant colors of the flowers and luch greenry before landing on Barrin and Galene. A small smirk grew upon her face as she saw her smudge dirt on his face, stifling a chuckle as he did the same to her. Despite the fact that her and Barrin didn't seem to be getting along well, June did like to watch the interactions between the siblings. It was amusing. Plus, you learned a lot about someone from watching them interact with their family.

June couldn't keep her laughter held back for look however. Not when Galene stood and brushed the dirt off of her, causing Barrin to quickly move back. Thankfully, June had been a safe distance away.

Letting out a series of chuckled as she stepped up to the two, June smirked slyly up at Barrin, a twinkle of amusement in her eyes, before she turned to look over at Galene. "These flowers are beautiful. Did you help plant them?" she asked, considering she had seen rhe young princess digging in the dirt earlier. Absent mindedly, she wondered how hold Galene was, however it was hard to tell. She looked about 10 or 11, however had such a childlike demeanor she couldn't tell for sure. Plus, with how short June was, it was hard to get a read on anyones age usually.

"Yup," Galene said, glancing around at them. "Casimir isn't allowed out of the castle most of the time so mom and dad just bring him flowers that we plant out here. He's sometimes too sick to look after them so I help."

Barrin glanced over at June. He knew that she had siblings as well and that, more likely than not, she missed them. Barrin couldn't imagine leaving behind his family for so long and knowing that he might never go back to them again.

Galene peered at June before turning to Barrin, tilting her head. She was strangely insightful at times, though he wondered if she was always that way and kept up a demeanor of childlike wonder in order to cause people confusion.

"What do you like about Vanguard?" Galene said suddenly, turning to peer at June. "And what do you want to do here?"

Nodding as she listened to Galene, June looked down and peered at the flowers once more. She couldn't imagine being sick like Casimir was, nor could she imagine watching any of her siblings be that sick either. Just thinking about it made her heart hurt. She could only imagine how hard it must be for them at times.

"That's very nice of you." she smiled, lifting her eyes to peer at Galene once more. "Well, they look great. You're defintely doing a better job than I would have." Dropping her voice to a not so quiet whisper, June leaned in a bit, as of she were about to tell her some big secret. "I've never been the best at gardening." she chuckled, before straightening back to her normal stance.

A silence came over them then as Galene peered at them both. Her eyebrows arched in slight surprise at her sudden question, and it was obvious she was a bit taken aback by it. "Oh. Wow. You don't mess around, do you?" she chuckled a bit incredulously, not expecting such an insightful question from the childlike girl. "Well lets see... I suppose I like how unified Vanguard seems. And it certainly is beautiful. I saw a bit of the tiver on my way in, and it really is gorgeous." It was true. The sparkling waters caught her eye instantly, and she was determined to visit it soon. As she rode by, she watched the townsfolk, and could see the pride and love they had for their kingdom and home. It was evident. And although this was not her homeland, she still thought it was beautiful, and respected Vanguard greatly.

Pursinf her lips in thought, June clasped her hands together as she thought of what she wanted to do here. "Well, there's no doubt I'd like to visit the river, if I can. And I'd love to visit the shops and bakeries to see how things are different here. Plus, I've heard you have some of the best pastries." she grinned excitedly, a small chuckle leaving her lips. June had a love for food, and a rather large appetite, despite her small stature. The girl could eat an entire turkey if she was hungry enough. She had the metabolism of her father, that was for sure.

"I'd also like to visit the training grounds, if that's possible. Me and my brothers train together everyday back in Etaleth, and even if they aren't here, I'd like to keep that routine." she smiled, however this one was a bittersweet one. "Oh!" Eyes lighting up suddenly as she remembered something, June straightened and suppresed the thoughts of her home, not wanting to go down that road just yet. "I'd like to visit the blacksmith too, if that's possible." It had been one of her favorite places to be at Etaleth. There was just something about the way they so skillfully crafted tools, and how detailed and intricate they were that fascinated her. She loved watching them, and wasn't willing to give that up for as long as she would be here.

Realizing she was rambling, June chuckled and rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. "Ah, sorry. I got a little too enthusiastic there.." Clearing her throat, June dropped her hands. "Think you can help me out with any of that though?" she smiled, raising a blonde eyebrow at the young princess.

Something glinted in Galene's eye for a second and she turned to look at Barrin.

He thought she looked shockingly like their mother in that instant; crafty, sly, a bit like she had discovered a secret and was ready to keep it to herself before telling the world in a hushed shout.

"It certainty sounds like you're enjoying your time here," she said, continuing to stare at Barrin with a look on her face that Barrin couldn't quite pinpoint. It reminded him of their mother, when she was trying to seal a trade and had one last trick up her sleeve.

"Barrin works at the barracks a lot," Galene said. Barrin blinked before narrowing his eyes at her.

"Indeed I do. I'm in charge of a small regiment," he said, wondering what the hell Galene was up to.

"And I believe that Barrin is the one you're stuck with these days," Galene added, turning to look at June finally. "I'd give the honor of showing you around and fulfilling all your desires to him." She turned once again to look at Barrin who could only stare blankly back. "Have fun big brother. You have a general idea of what to do now instead of standing around like an idiot."

With that she picked up her shovel and gave each of them a polite nod. "Now, I need to change before mom finds me and has a fit over the state of my clothing," she said. "Have a nice day and don't kill each other just yet."

Like that, she was gone.

Barrin shut his eyes briefly, drawing in a breath before opening them. Sometimes, he wondered if Galene kept an act of innocence up while she planned behind the scenes. Or perhaps they just confused her wild enthusiasm with ignorance and innocence. She certainty ran around the kingdom a lot. Some of the places weren't as nice as the others, so it would make sense that she might have learned a few tricks.

"Well," Barrin said, opening his eyes to stare at June, "it seems that we ought to get moving, then. The barracks are the closest."

'I don't know about that...'

While Vanguard was definitely beautiful, and she wanted to explore the kingdom further, she wasn't sure enjoyable was the right way to describe how it felt to be here right now. Instead of saying that though, June merely smiled at Galene, watching as her eyes flitted from her to Barrin.

Her next comment made June raise an eyebrow, eyes flitting to Barrin before back to Galene. Well yes, she kind of assumed he did, what with his armor he was currently wearing and him being a knight and all. However she didn't know he was in charge of a regiment. He must be very skilled, in that case.

Her smile fell slightly as Galene continued, blinking slightly. ...Where had that childlike demeanor gone? Was she just rambling innocently, or was it purposeful? June couldn't tell. And she had to admit, she was a bit confused as well.

Still, she couldn't help but smirk as Galene addressed her brother, nearly grinning as she likened him to an idiot. June watched her leave, a small grin on her lips. It seemed she had sized up the young girl too quickly. It was a mistake she would do best not to make again.

But still...

"I like her." June stated matter-of-factly as Galene disappeared, a small chuckle rising from her throat. She was definitely interesting, that was for sure.

Turning to Barrin, June nodded as he spoke. "Alright, lead the way." she said, raising an eyebrow expectantly. "Oo, do you think I could try out some of the swords while I'm there?" she added, looking up at him hopefully. She wanted to see if and how Vanguards weaponry was different than Etaleth's.

Barrin breathed heavily through his nose at June's comment. "I'm sure you two will get along well," he said before turning and marching off towards the barracks, making his way out of the garden and into the halls.

"I am sure you could convince someone to hand you one," he said, nodding as the knights pulled open the main door and stepped out into the busy kingdom.

There were people running everywhere, some with their arms laden down with scrolls and books while others seized their carts, shouting their wares at anyone who cared to listen. Most people in the region were fanciful aristocrats, part of the council and puttered around with an air of importance.

It annoyed Barrin on a few days.

He weaved through the crowd, occasionally glancing back to ensure that June was not lost (though he couldn't bring himself to care if she did become confused) and arrived at a simple looking brick building. A guard arched an eyebrow at Barrin before he jerked his head towards June.

The guard simply lowered the eyebrow and yanked open the door.

"After you," Barrin said, turning to look at June.

Following Barrin out of castle, June scoffed quietly at his detached demeanor, rolling her eyes yet again at how difficult he was being. At least she was trying here! He didn't seem to want to give his two cents on anything though. It was annoying. Was he always like this?

The walk to the barracks was not the enjoyable walk she had been hoping for. Instead of taking the time the to survey the kingdom and take in the sights, she spent her time trying to stay with Barrin so she didn't get lost, weaving in and out of the crowds and pushing her way through in the confusion. It was easy for one to get lost in the crowd, especially for someone as small as she was. Almost everyone was taller than she, and a few didn't even see her. But fortunately for her, Barrin was one of the taller ones, and it was easy to keep her eyes trainec on the back of his head.

Finally arriving at the barracks, June huffed as she falled into step beside him, slightly winded. Blowing an errant strand of hair out of her eyes, her blue orbs glared up at the prince. "Oh gee, thanks for waiting for me." the blonde spat sarcastically, exhaling heavily and smoothing out her dress. While she could manage perfectly fine on her own, it would've been a lot less stressful had she been with Barrin. The guy was like a brick wall. She doubt she would have had much trouble getting through the crowd had she been close behind him.

As the guard opened door for them, June smiled politely at him and nodded in a thank you, before glancing up at Barrin and rolling her eyes at his empty gesture. "Don't try and act all gentleman like now after practically deserting me in that frantic mob." she huffed indignantly, before entering the barracks. She wasn't upset over it or offended, simply irritated and annoyed.

Suddenly, she was itching to get her hands on a sword. Hopefully she could convince someone to let her test some out.

The guard arched another eyebrow at Barrin at June's comment.

"It's a Vanguardian crowd in the afternoon," Barrin told her, "get used to them."

The guard glanced at Barrin, tilting his head as if asking a question.

"The princess has arrived," Barrin said tartly.

"The one you're to marry?" the guard asked, finally speaking.

Barrin nodded stiffly.

"Pleasant," the guard said simply and Barrin swept inside.

The barracks were simple enough. The entrance held a main hall where there were tables. Soldiers and knights sat at the tables, playing cards or eating or drinking. They were all rather formal, however, wearing casual tunics and keeping rather professional. Most had swords hanging by their belts as if ready to leap into action at the instant that something seemed amiss.

There were two hallways branching off from the main hall, towards what was most likely the actual rooms where the soldiers slept. At the back of the hall was a door, possibly leading outside.

There was a set of stairs next to the hallways branching off and a few soldiers walked up and down said steps, carrying with them various weapons.

June merely sighed at Barrin's comment before stepping inside the barracks, if only to keep herself from biting back with another retort. She didn't even have a problem with the crowd. It was him she had a problem with! Had he been the one visiting her kingdom, she would have made sure to stick close ro him so he wouldn't get lost. That was just common decencey, and despite her fiery nature, she didn't lack that!

Letting out a soft sigh, June closed her eyes briefly gave herself a mental shake, before opening them once more. Her blue eyes flitted over the barracks, taking in her surroundings. It was similar to the barracks in Etaleth, however the layout was a little different. Still, being in a place that was at least a little similar to her hometown helped to relax her a bit.

Now... which way to the armory. There were two hallways, and a pair of stairs. Usually, June would be all too happy just to go gallavanting off and figure it out for herself, but she didn't want to seem nosey or intrusive. Not to the other knights, at least.

"Which way to the armory?" she asked, tilting her head back to peer up at Barrin with an inquisitive eyebrow raised.

Barrin peered down at June. He was usually taller than most people in the kingdom and most of the time, it wasn't hard to pick him out of a crowd. However, June was much shorter than what he was used to. Only his youngest sister and brother were shorter than her and it was strange having to peer down so far.

He figured mentioning that would get him a worthy slap and he wasn't really looking to physically fight his fiance for the time being.

"That way," he said, pointing up the right set of stairs. On the left would be the two separate pathways to the washroom and the kitchen.

"Alright, then that's where I'm going." June said with a small nod. "But you have to come with me. I doubt the other knights will let a stranger just waltz in and start messing with their weaponry." With that, June turned on her heel and started for the stairs, not even bothering to hear what his reply was. Everything he said to her was just short, sweet, and to the point anyways, like he was trying to get this whole thing over and done with and go back to trying to ignore her.

It was pissing her off. And it stuck her with a determination to try and get some other type of reaction from him -- anything. She couldn't take such quiet, despite the dull chatter that was present in the barracks. June always had someone to talk to back home if she wanted. Whether it be her siblings, the knights in the barracks, or the townsfolk and commoners. She had gone to having so many people around her, to having no one. Already she could feel the loneliness starting to creep in.

Exhaling softly through her nose, June bounded up the right set of stairs, stepping into the armory with a small sigh. Her eyes scanned the selection of weapons, and the corners of her lips quirked up into a small smile as they landed on the large selection of swords. Aha.

Taking a step forwards, June was quickly intercepted by one of the knights, his sudden appearance causing her to take a step back and peer up at him. "Excuse me, who are you here with Miss?" he asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow. His suspicion was understood, considering she was a stranger. She wondered if any woman were part of the army as well... She hadn't seen any so far, and back in Etaleth, she was the only one that she knew of that went there. Woman weren't allowed as part of the army, not because Etaleth looked down on them, but because her father felt the protection of the woman and children of their kingdom was more important. It was a ridiculous law in her opinion, however it was ultimately up to her father. Woman still trained though, and many were skilled with a sword or a bow and arrow. They were ready to fight for their home, however it was simply not allowed for them to officially be apart of the army. She wondered how it was different here...

"Prince Barrin. You can ask him yourself." she replied with a sigh, eyes flickering to the swords then back to the knight. The material they were made with looked different from the ones in Etaleth... She wanted to get a closer look, to see how they compared to her homelands weaponry. Perhaps the iron was crafted differently, or there were different minerals in it. "Do you think I could hold one of those swords, though?" she asked hopefully, anticipation and impatience starting rise up within her.
