Once upon a time, in a fairytale land, there were three kingdoms locked into struggle: Alizarin, the mighty warriors with their thundering horses and gleaming swords; Verdigris, the stealthy sailors who stole both cattle and chattel by night and sold them by day; and Pthalia, the aloof wizard-scholars who captured fairies and trained the animals to do their dirty work.

Even when there wasn’t outright war, there was still prejudice, suspicion, and disdain. One day, a great storm passed over the land. The earth cracked, and the mountains bled fire. In the face of the wrath of gods, the commoners united to save their families and their livelihoods. The soldiers united to save their brothers in arms. And finally, the nobles united, realizing that eternal conflict was no future for their countries.

In commemoration of the day the three kingdoms laid down arms and embraced each other in peace, we celebrate the Festival of Hearts – a day when the royal matchmakers assign husbands and wives to the young bachelors and bachelorettes of the noble families. There’s food and spirits and dancing, and a group marriage ceremony before an altar. Each couple presents to the altar the heart of a freshly butchered animal as a sacrifice to appease the gods.

Alizarin

To the mountainous west, a rigid warrior kingdom where the mighty rule and the weak are cast off. That doesn't make them cruel, per se, or disdainful of the weak - quite the opposite. The Alizarin people look down on bullies and believe that inside of every soul is a mighty fighting spirit. It's just that they also believe that if you can't hold your own in battle, then you're in no position to be leading others. And since you're in no position to be leading others, they really don't give a shit about what you think they should or shouldn't do. Square up, bitch.

Here, the hills of wildflowers and grass give way to steeper, snow-capped mountains. The arid plateaus have beautiful superblooms. Within the mountains lies a vast network of caves and mines, said to be the finest metal in all the land. The purity of the ore is thought to be one of the reasons that Alizarin is seldom troubled by mischievous fae, although that might also have something to do with the legendary Queen Bellatrix who castrated the prince of fairies, stewed the gonads with barley and pumpkin, and served it to the Fairy Queen – something about them both wearing white at a wedding.

Pthalia

The northern kingdom, full of ancient misty forests with trees older than history. The arcane energy is thick enough to choke on. The fairies and spirits have their strongholds here in the north and have formed a tentative relationship with Pthalian mankind that lies somewhere between “begrudging respect” and “neighbor that plays the flute and drums during the witching hours”. Some of them, perhaps, may have fraternized… and may explain why pumpkins are outlawed.

The people of Pthalia value education above all else and is the only one of the three countries where even the children of farmers can read basic words and do mental math. Almost everyone can perform basic utilitarian spells such as creating a bright light, starting a fire to heat the tea, and levitating small items. Unfortunately, this has also resulted in Pthalia having the least stable monarchy. The ruling family tends to be whomever has the best bribes for the Dark Court – an ultra-exclusive fraternity of wizard-scholars and fae, that is so secret that many people aren’t even sure they actually exist, and it’s all some elaborate conspiracy to wrest control of the world economy away from that obese pig pretending to be the King of Verdigris.

Verdigris

A warm and lush land – perhaps a little too much so. With miles and miles of coastline and a vast network of rivers and wetlands, Verdigris culture revolves around the water, whether it’s the deep ocean, babbling brooks, or secluded marshes. Elegant ships carrying exotic cargo sail between the three kingdoms, each company (most of them family owned) with their own vibrant flag. Within the kingdom, flat-bottomed barges carry goods from one waterside town to the next. Traditional horse-drawn wagons are reserved for the northern regions with their firmer soil. Down south, you’re liable to sink in the mud and die there if you don’t watch your footing.

Unfortunately, the Verdigris people have a reputation for being thieves and liars. It’s not entirely unfounded, however it’s inadvisable to mention this in their presence. It will begin an argument in which they point out that most pirates are Alizarin mercenaries, and it’s a Pthalian demand for toxic ingredients for illegal potions that keeps the black market flourishing, and furthermore, you’re clearly a socioeconomic elitist besmirching the humble origins of this maritime nation, and maybe there wouldn’t be a slave trade if the arena owners didn’t pay so handsomely for bodies for gladiators to practice on, and honestly, they’re just trying to make a living, why don’t you relax with some rum and roast pork? Have you heard the King has gone missing? Tragic, really, the Queen is beside herself, oscillating between sobbing and maniacal laughter.

Festival of Hearts

An annual marriage festival. Legend has it that after a great storm destroyed the land, the three nations came to a truce in order to rebuild. As a symbolic gesture, various noble families volunteered sons and daughters to marry into other countries, so that future generations would have second thoughts about waging war on their cousins. The festival is hosted by a different country each year, but the ceremony is the same: all the candidates gather together in a temple, and present a sacrificial heart to the gods. The matchmakers announce the couples, vows are recited, dinner is had, and dances are danced - some of which, if the matchmakers are any good, will be horizontal.

Matchmaker

Esteemed elders are chosen by the rulers to pair off the candidates. It's an honorable position, and the matchmakers are chosen for their extensive social knowledge (aka gossip skills) and shrewd negotiation skills. After all, this isn't about love - this is about securing the future of the nation.

Noble families

The most uppity of the upper class, every country has aristocrats of one form another. They're mainly the ones who take part of the marriage ceremony, as the marriages of commoners don't particularly affect politics... unless a noble gets involved somehow.

Magic

I was thinking about some elaborate system for magic, but honestly, who gives a shit? This is basically a fairy tale setting with dashes of Dungeons & Dragons. If it could pass for something out of the Matter of Britain or Brothers Grimm or the Player's Handbook, then go for it. Just be reasonable.

Magical creatures

Same as above. We have the ultra-rare dragons and unicorns, we have mermaids and sirens, fairies and fae, gnomes, goblins, trolls, centaurs, etc. They won't show up much near human civilization, so they aren't super common (otherwise, what would make them special?) but by golly they exist!

Gods

They don't mess with the humans too much, but when they do, shit goes pear-shaped. Each country has its own patron deity, and there's an assortment of others who really won't factor into the story for a while.

Alizarin: Orasael, a god of bloodshed, sacrifice, and death (and sometimes hyprocrisy). He came into being in the aftermath of a mighty battle, after the blood of tens of thousands of men soaked the earth. He was forged from the resulting mud, and the bones became his armor and sword. Orasael craves blood to sustain himself, yet loathes his own existence. He wanders the desert to the west of Alizarin, seeking the one who raised him from the mud. One day, when there is no more war, he will starve to death and all will be well.
Pthalia: Uneth, an ancient fairy god of arcane knowledge, laws, and flower crowns. He's the least terrifying of the three gods, and the most dangerous. He is a manipulative trickster who knows everything there ever was to know, and ever will be - however, if you have offended him, you may be able to earn forgiveness by telling an entertaining story. If you're in his good graces, he may be so kind as to teach you something new. No one is sure where the flower crown thing came from, though. It's probably a prank, but nobody wants to find out the hard way.
Verdigris: The Deep One, the Mother of Monsters, a deep-sea goddess from all chaos spreads. Some would even call her salty. Every part of her body is beautiful, except her eyes, which are cold and terrible. All of the monsters of the sea are her children (especially mermaids), which makes for some fascinating and disgusting artwork. It is because of her chaos that there are currents and tradewinds that allow movement, but she is also the source of the terrible storm that nearly destroyed the world so long ago.
