Your run of the mill Victorian lady
Love of God (a Victorian rp)

Pastor Markus Kipling isn’t your average man of God. He’s more the type to stand on the busy street corner, screaming the gospels and declaring the end times are upon us. And, on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, he preaches the terror of God’s judgement to his wife, his brothers, his twelve children, and his small but devoted flock of converts.

It is 1847, in a medium sized New England town, overlooking the grey and stormy sea. By this point, Kipling’s children of God almost outnumber the nonbelievers. Almost, but not quite. That doesn’t bother them, though. They do not speak to outsiders, save to bring them into the fold. Mostly, they commune amongst themselves, living by Kipling’s teachings, and the word of the Bible.

This is a community of fundamentalists. All must be to the glory of god, and all must surrender to him, and try to free themselves from the wants of the flesh. Dancing, drinking, playing cards, music besides hymns, romance out of wedlock, all of that is forbidden. Members are encouraged to be each others’ keepers, and to report to Pastor Kipling should they see their brother or sister beginning to fall. Hairstyles, clothing, diet, books and newspapers, are all carefully regulated and kept away from the flock. In truth, there is little room to question anything. Blind faith and blind obedience are all that is left.

Welcome, to the love of God.

This is a realistic rp set in mid 19th century America. It will deal with Victorian tropes and ideals. The long suffering wife, the suffocating morals that leave little room to just be a human, fear of our bodies and natural impulses, with a big hearty emphasis on what it means to grow up as a woman or queer person in an environment where that is seen as unclean and dangerous. I encourage you to make characters that might not seem like the perfect Victorian Christians, but I encourage you to try instead to make characters who seem real. Give me a struggle of the heart, as your characters try to deal with their beliefs and their identities, and the various ways they contradict and intersect.

Like all of the rps that I will ever run, this is 100% accepting of LGBT+ identities and characters. The story may deal with difficult themes surrounding these characters, but, to quote my about me, I reject the notion that lgbt+ identities are something new or modern. They have always existed, just sometimes under the veil of secrecy and shame. Through storytelling, we can lift that veil, and illuminate the hypothetical lives and dramas of those who came before us.

Now that we have that out of the way, this rp will center around a small cult, the Kipling family and those who follow Pastor Kipling. There will be a LOT of preset roles for people to take, if they go unclaimed, they can be NPCs. All I ask is that if you’re playing one of the Kipling daughters, give her a virtue name. I’ll give you a big long list. And if you’re playing a Kipling son, give him a first and middle name, and have both names be Bible characters, the more obscure the better. Now for some rules, and then the available preset roles. (All listed genders are what was designated at birth. Feel free to interpret any of them as closeted trans, or whatever strikes your fancy, just remember they probably won’t be open about it.)

Rules-Be nice be respectful out of character
-Swearing is okay in moderation, but definitely would be against the rules of The Group.
-No one liners. We don’t need novellas, but please give at least a good paragraph.
-Research isn’t required (or expected), but it is encouraged. I won’t be enforcing historical accuracy too much, but also, if you have any questions about the history, ask me! I will probably have an answer!!
-Follow the rules of RPN
-Anime fcs are okay, but I prefer real people, your own artwork, or artwork you have permission to use from the artist.
-We are not here to bash anyone’s beliefs. Christianity can be used for a force of good just as easily and as often as it is used to hurt and control people.
-Have fun, ask me any questions you might have, and let’s tell a good story!

Yay! Any specific denomination of christianity?

Ehhhh, good question. It's fundamentalist Lutheran-esque, but I'm not putting a name on it. Really, it's a small fictional cult, and I'm writing up the doctrine and ideas of it myself, using my own research into 19th century morality, fundamentalist Christianity, and also cult psychology and Steven Hassan's BITE model. There will be a lore thread, soon.

Ok! What sources are you primarily using for research?

Again, Steven Hassan's BITE model. It's a diagnostic of sorts meant to illustrate and analyze the various ways cults control people. That's my main source, since a cult is a cult is a cult, regardless of its context. I do want to reiterate that Christianity as a whole isn't bad, and I have nothing against Christians or the Bible. It's people that come in and corrupt it, and destructive cults are one, fascinating, example of that.

Beyond the BITE model, I do my research by reading about and watching videos about preexisting cults in real life, taking a bit of inspirations here and there. The Quiverfull movement, purity culture, Michael and Debi Pearl and all their teachings, and things like that. And as for my knowledge of the 19th century, it is, of course, imperfect. However, I've been researching and learning about the 19th century independently for the past five years or so.

Hope this helps!

oh, i'd love to take pastor kipling's younger brother! :0

I'd be interested in the brother disgraced from the group although how exactly does it work? Are living in the town and just shunned or are they within the group but regarded as the lowest of the low or is something else happening? Also interested in the eighth child.

Heya! I know we're already involved in another RP together, but this one seems super interesting. It's ok if you don't want me to be involved in two RPs with you, it is totally understandable. But if you don't mind that much, I'd love to try out for the seventh child. Once again though, I'd be completely ok if you didn't want me to be a part of the RP since I haven't really been in a situation like this.

I was actually going to leave that up to you! He can be in the town, living amongst the unbelievers, he could have left and is now coming back to town. It’s up to your imagination. But I’d like for him to have left The Group.

And I can mark you down for both, if you’d like!
