That Lass Over There
Constant Panic
- The 'Ancient Times' specifically refers to the period of time 1200 years ago and prior - in other words, before the deities descended from Heaven to live among the mortal races. The later stretch of this period is also known as the "Age of Heroes".
In this period of history, Orario as it is known today did not exist. The Dungeon went unhindered, and monsters poured directly from its depths to the outer world. Rather than exploring the Dungeon, it was all people could do to try suppress the weaker monsters that roamed at high cost, and avoid stronger monsters at all costs. A sort of precursor to the modern Adventurer, Heroes, sprouted up every now and then - blessed by Spirits, or otherwise fortunate, they were given power beyond their peers to save the day and lead their people. The power of these Heroes were inadequate to fully stem the tide, however, and many incredibly strong monsters escaped to the surface from the Dungeon's depths.
Beyond heroic epics and myths specifically from the Age of Heroes, not much is left of this ancient time in historical record. It is known that while Dungeon exploration was not a fully-fledged concept, and Orario was not a settlement at the time. Occasionally there would be moves to suppress the Dungeon and its monsters at their doorstep by building structures on top of the labyrinth and outposts of pre-Falna Adventurers stationed in forts and the like in the proximity to monitor the Dungeon and even clear out its top layers. As far as records show, Floor 8 was the deepest anyone had gotten in these culls before the deities descended. - The Age of Deities is the period immediately after the Age of Heroes, where the deities had been interfering to aid their children in the struggle for their survival from Heaven. 1200 years ago, this period of indirect meddling had ended, with the deities having come to an arrangement - a 'game', of sorts. They would mingle among the children, restricting the use of their Divine Powers "Arcanum" to live like mortals. Instead of wielding their own power, they would grant Falna to their children, allowing them to gain the power to take care of themselves and forge their own paths.
The first deities to arrive did so crashing into the rudimentary structure built atop the Dungeon to contain it, the first Babel, before ordering construction of a new tower - the modern Babel that stands as the symbol of Orario today. They recruited into their Familia and the Guild was formed to establish order and governance in the city. In short order, the Orario as it is known today was formed, and elsewhere in the world nations formed around the deities that had struck out on their own, monsters that had escaped the Dungeon slowly being cleaned from the surface by the swelling capabilities of the children.
Deities have dramatically shaped the world in the last 1200 years, building new nations under their rule or patronage. The world outside the Dungeon has become safer for it with few exemptions, but there is one notable exception of these - the One-Eyed Black Dragon, which remains as the strongest known monster to have escaped the Dungeon in the Ancient Times and looms as a threat to everyone. The goal to subjugate the Dragon is considered the last Great Quest, of which there used to be three. - The specific time frame of the Golden Age of Adventure is a hotly debated topic, but most agree that it primarily revolved around three Familia - the Zeus and Hera Familias, who were responsible for successfully completing two of the three Great Quests before being broken on their attempt at the One-Eyed Black Dragon, and the Loki Familia, who were at the time thought to be the successors of the previous two.
