Cardinal, the captain of the Linked. She sits within her office at the “The Linked Ones Corps” HQ, with a devastated grimace on her face. Spread on her desk was a pile of photos. 29 of her linked. All dead. They were having a grand old time, attending an annual ceremony thrown by the city for them. It was to show gratitude for all of their hard work in policing the city and protecting them from the demons that roam outside the walls in the Hellands. And somehow they must of all became disoriented, passing out, one by one. Cardinal shook her head as she realized that it was probably the wine. Someone had drugged it. Then the fire began. None of them made it out, burned to death. The only reason she was alive is because she hadn’t attended. It was because of the program she was in now. No alcohol. She didn’t trust herself not to drink yet, so she had decided not to go. But it didn’t change the fact that it was her responsibility. She was the captain of the linked ones. Their blood was on her hands. She had failed them.
“Never again.” She spoke out loud to no one, as tears began to fill her eyes. Or so she thought she was alone.
“Never again what, Cardinal?” Kobalt asked walking into her office and sitting down in the chair across from her.
She quickly whipped the tears from her cheeks and gained her composure. “Good to see your back. I’m sorry you had to return from your vacation early, but duty calls.” She said ignoring his question.
“Well when I heard about what occurred I didn’t much feel much like staying. Everyone’s really gone, aren’t they?” He said as if stunned.
Once again she ignored his question. “We should have some new recruits coming in soon to help out.” She said taking out the paperwork for the new linked she had scheduled to join the corps. “They’re green but their files show they have great potential. And also….. we have one of our own returning as well.” She said suddenly as if annoyed.
“One of our own? But I thought everyone was killed in th-.”
“Not everyone.” Spade interrupted suddenly with a smirk. “I wasn’t even invited to the stupid thing. At first my feelings were hurt, but now I’m glad I didn’t go.” He said walking into the office as well.
Kobalt jumped up. “Are you serious Cardinal?! This guy was accused of blackmail, abusing his power, and using intimidation to get what he wants. And now your bringing him back? He doesn’t deserve to even be in the corps! He’s a disgrace to everyone who just died!” Kobalt said yelling and clenching his fists. He was ready to punch a hole in the wall, or a hole in Spade.
“Hey man relax. I was only accused remember? Those black market traders were buying, selling, and trafficking illegal demon paraphernalia all over this city. You know how much a minotaur horn goes for? More than you make in a year. My tactics may seem dark compared to you mister always by the book but I get the job done just like you do.” Spade said staring back not backing down an inch.
“Cut the crap! Kobalt! I understand your concern but this isn’t debate, I’m in charge! Spade! Your no longer suspended but your on probation. If you pull anything questionable I swear on the graves of our fallen. I will make you wish you were in that fire.” She said re-establishing her authority.
“As I told you before we are in a state of crisis. It seems that a demon and not just any, a devil, has somehow entered New Grand City. Not to mention tracking down who assassinated all of our team. I doubt these things are connected but its quite a coincidence. Keep your ears and eyes open. Spade, the rookies should be her soon. Take them with you on patrol. That should keep you out of trouble. Kobalt your with me.” She said getting up to leave.
“W-what!? Take them with me!?” Spade said shocked.
Kobalt began to laugh. “Have fun babysitting. Good to have you back Spade.” He said following Cardinal out of HQ.
