I have been looking hard at a post WWII Steampunk concept that explores the merging of the typical Jules Verne era exploration themes with the political drama of post WW II. It surrounds the development of Umbral travel by Americans (allies), Soviets, and former Nazis. The result is a sort of umbral "space race" as the various political entities struggle to achieve dominance of a new and very dangerous technology.

I also looked at 1920, but didn't find the politics as useful for a plot. And I am still considering the height of the Cold War - the 1980's.

Well, I want feel of the Lost World feel - with the stereotype scientists, engineers, rugger great white hunters, All American Heroes, perhaps a psychic etc. I am looking for the feel of ... oh ... Jules Verne and HG Wells books mixed with Rocketeer, Flash Gordon, and perhaps the TV series Sanctuary and Fringe.

I already have a couple scientists that develop the Umbral drive. Basically it operates like a cross between Sliders, Stargate Universe, and Babylon 5. This will be a genre of fringe science.

When it comes to characters, I will be looking for a group of diverse origins that is compatible - even if they are forced to be (say by an accidental jump). I might even make room for some "bad" guys, but they would have to be worked into the introduction of the story. A good example was the movie Rocketeer.

Can't say I have ever heard of that movie but my only problem with this if you do end up making it a thread is I only have a basic idea of what Steampunk is so I may get some terms and things like that wrong but I would still love to see this become a Rp thread

Well, I am using the very liberal version of the word. Originally Steampunk referred to steam powered technology in anachronistic environments. But the term has also seen use for any anachronistic tech. This is really more fringe technology. There simply isn't a genre for that. I suppose I should really create a new thread and call it Fringe tech.

Check out the wiki for the term

The photo at the wiki link will give an idea of the feel for the genre I am looking for. Mage: The Ascension's Sons of Ether would be another good example. So would Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

How far can this Umbral travel reach? Other planets? Other dimensions?

Yes, of course. Both ... alternate realities, strange realms, fantasy realms. However before anyone starts thinking of making characters of those weird realms, think again. Go back and read the the first post of this thread. The focus is the "space race". In short there will be agents of other nations competing with you to explore and exploit those realms.
