Lies are forbidden and love is even more forbidden. The Goverment |
In the near future, when young people in Japan turn sixteen, they are assigned a marriage partner by the government. People don't have to go through the trouble of looking for someone, and everyone accepts that the country will find a compatible partner to make them happy.
You are watched from day one, your skills and who you are, is all jotted down so we can find the perfect match for you. You may not know the person, or maybe you have grown up with them. Each couple is male and female, there is no couples unable to reproduce aloud. When you turn the rightful age of 16, you receive a text message.

Tomorrow you will be exempt from school for a full day to meet your assigned partner and her/his family. How you act is up to you, but we expect politeness from you and your partner. Even if your both strangers.
Don't get us wrong though, anything you do before you turn sixteen is up to you. Sex, Girlfriends, Boyfriends, things like that, its all good and fine until you turn the age of sixteen. Then anything like that with someone who is not your assigned partner is extremely frowned upon.
But what if this isn't what you wanted, what if you've fallen in love with someone else, or your interested in the same gender? Well I guess there's really nothing you can do about it is there? Well, unless you feel like a) Over turning the government? or b) doing things behind your partners back?
What is your choice, in this small town, with an all grade high school and a population of 2,000, what will you choose? Will you wait and see if you can fall for the right person, or will you act before you are given your contract? Will you let the government control what you feel, or will you decide on your own.
But remember, no matter what you do, the government really is always watching, and no matter what happens you will receive the piece of paper that states who you will be married too.
