Lumberjack
Name: Ken Fey'at'nen
Age: 25
Race: Vulk'tam
Appearance:
(Closest real photos.)
At first glance, Ken appears to be an albino Human but upon further inspection, you realize that isn't the case at all. While tall and lean with white hair and porcelain skin, his ears are tapered at the tip and he happens to have a long white tail hanging from his backside. His hands are human in appearance, four fingers and a thumb, but where there are supposed to be nails there are black blunted claws.
His facial appearance seems Human enough, though the bridge of his nose is flat and smoothly connects to his brow. There are light gray spots that frame his hairline and trail down behind his ears towards his spine, they travel further, connecting to the base of his tail. If you catch him smiling, you might notice slightly elongated canine teeth, though blunted for an omnivore diet.
The golden iris of his eyes are slightly larger and the pupil is a black vertical slit allowing for great night vision but poor day vision. He usually wears a pair of round spectacles that occasionally hang on a chain around his neck, they help with his inherent nearsightedness and have a special coating that enhances color.
Ken keeps his hair short, tail trimmed and claws filed down to conform to Human standards
Personality:
Ken seems aloof and lazy but that is normal for a Vulk'tam. One word replies are his most used vocabulary; his masculine voice is slow to respond on some occasions but he is just thinking internally and does pay attention when spoken to, even if he isn't looking at you and seems distracted. He isn't considered a genius but has a high intellect and thirst for knowledge.
Not quick to laugh or smile, he isn't without humor, though sometimes his jokes are rather dry. Ken does come off cold and disinterested, perhaps expressionless, but those who know him pick up on his subtleties, including the motions of his tail which can be very expressive.
Most Vulk'tam appear feral and generally get a bad rap as pet killers due to some cultural beliefs. Ken would rather lay in bed and listen to music while smoking and holding his tablet, studying. But when he or his friends are threatened he can come across as an aggressive beast and doesn't hold back his natural strength and athleticism.
Sometimes Ken can be caught doing strange favors for others, not that he is subservient, but Vulk'tam don't really have the same selfish motives when asking their kin to complete tasks and it can come across as a foreign concept, which he can then be taken advantage of. Often third parties need to step in and tell him to stop.
History:
Born and raised on Vulk'sa in a generic den with a loving and spiritual family, Ken knows his home well. It isn't an overpopulated planet and was still considered to be a barbaric race until thrust into the space age recently. Spacefarers tended to leave their arctic home alone, the freezing temperatures not really worth the colonization but eventually colonization came anyway.
Ken spent the majority of his childhood training to hunt and support his family. As an adolecent, he began to attend school taught by Human missionaries. Their town grew into a city as he aged, populated by different races and weather-proofed buildings made to resemble Human structures rather than the cozy dens they were used to.
Trade boomed with new diamond mines being opened and spaceship shuttles came and went. With profit came crime, a new concept to the Vulk'tam. Over the course of his young life, he saw his home corrupted.
The missionary had remained and taught him a broad spectrum of things, Ken had thought it kind of funny when the man had started wearing cultural clothes and grew out his hair, bleaching it white. His teacher even took a Vulk'tam wife.
He had told himself he would never adapt himself to be Human but that turned out to be wrong. The teacher had given him a great gift on his seventeenth birthday, an acceptance letter to a prestigious school on a Core planet, far from Vulk'sa. Ken was honestly surprised and his parents encouraged him, thinking that the school would turn him into someone who would make their family rich. He scoffed at the Human idea but accepted it for his parents anyway.
His parents sold their jewelry and den, moving into one of the apartment buildings that had been constructed. Even some of his distant family gave him currency and loaded up his bag with idols of luck and charms of protection. The teacher gave him one final gift, a pass on the next passenger ship.
His first thought when he entered the shuttle was that it was too hot and his voyage was very uncomfortable, he was frustrated with the different bed shapes, the restrictions on the temperatures in his cabin and even the toilets were different. But he adapted.
Attending the school was more difficult than he first thought, he got less sleep, had to rush when he would have rather walked and needed to get a part-time job to pay for his food. Being the only Vulk'tam was rather unpleasant as well, people always wanted to touch his fluffy tail and often did so without permission.
A couple years in, he started to assimilate into their culture. He trimmed his tail down so it was inconspicuous, began to wear their clothing, listen to their music and even wore a bandana around his head to hide his ears and spots. He found people were more accepting of him and made some friends when he began to specialize in medicine.
He did his time at the hospitals, earning his degree, learning about various species and their anatomy. Ken graduated with high marks, but not the top of his class. Real life was harder.
Hospitals wouldn't hire him, he lacked experience. Spacestations near core planets would let him intern as a nurse, but he had earned his doctorate and they wouldn't pay him. He had no money, no experience, and no job. Ken left the core systems and moved outwards, hopping from place to place, trying to make his way back home. Often he was hired to medic during times of sickness but was fired months later when they didn't need him anymore.
Around this time he picked up smoking as a bad habit, a blend of Soim Weed and Langpor. It smelled like mint, strawberries, and ash but you could only taste the near mint-like flavor of the Langpor. The cigarettes were wildly marketed to soothe anxiety, reduce stress and relax, which is just what he needed it for.
Twenty-five, the Valk'tam found himself stranded on another planet again, looking for work and a way off.
Position on the ship: Wannabe Medic
Extra:
Vulk'tam are a race of feral looking people who had advanced quickly from colonization. The closest resemblance would be arctic fox-people as the ancestor they evolved from was a fox-like canid with fur that would probably look like a fluffy white sausage with legs to some Humans.
They have a generic humanoid appearance with several variations, pointed ears, sharper teeth, larger eyes better suited to nocturnal life, claws and a long proportionate tail that could be called obnoxiously fluffy. The tail is meant to keep them warm during long cold winters. Males and females differ with males being larger, both genders could be considered androgynous, female breasts grow only during pregnancy and while nursing.
Most Vulk'tam aren't nearsighted, but it is a common occurrence. Another genetic trait that frequently surfaces is fur-like hair growing from their spots, this is often shaved.
Vulk'tam are primarily hunter-gatherers, prone to put on weight with a stationary lifestyle. They are a slow and relaxing people, expending energy only when necessary. Their skin colors range from porcelain to pure white. Their hair colors range from grey to pure white. Their spots, the same. Pure white is considered the epitome of Vulk'tam beauty, including the lack of visible spots. It is the shade of their clothing, their furniture, and other various cultural items.
Cosmetics weren't a new concept with colonization, some used white powders to cover their face and spots, to appear more pleasing. Bold males and females would wear silvers and color, decorating the space from the tip of their nose, up the bridge and the forehead rather than the Human choice of cheeks, lips, and eyes. Most often they keep their hair long, braided or decorated with beads.
The Vulk'tam religion would be considered shamanistic, worshiping spirits of various objects and concepts. Ritual was commonplace, including animal sacrifice and eating its heart. The dead were buried in white linens and jewels. The diamond being sacred and the most common gemstone, it is also found in the majority of Valk'tam jewelry.
