The basic idea is that there are five main elemental clans - the inhabitants of whom are human or humanoid, but have elemental powers pertaining to their clan.
The plot is that these five clans had defeated all other elements in an all-out battle, and forged a barrier that kept them in power and the other clans out. However, every century or so, the barrier has to be renewed. This is accomplished by a nominated tribute from each clan who meets with four others from the main clans to try and retrieve five different artifacts that represent their elements, to be brought back to the clans and used in a ceremony by the tribes' elders. The exiled clans are trying to stop them to bring down the barrier, but cannot touch the elemental artifacts (only a member of the respective elemental tribe can).
Earth Relic
Description
The earth relic is an extremely rare sentient mushroom that roams the marshes acting as the border between the earth and water clans. Quite small in size and quick in speed, the mushroom is extremely difficult to spot, and even harder to catch.
The earth relic can only be caught by a member of the Earth tribe. While others can help contain it, if anyone but an earth element attempts to touch the relic, it will turn to stone and a new one will need to be located.
Lightning Relic
Description
To obtain the lightning relic a specialized jar has been prepared to contain an unadulterated bolt of lightning. To catch the lightning before it is diluted, it must be caught during a vicious storm while at a great height.
Only a member of the Lightning Tribe is able to catch the lightning within the jar. If an individual other then a member of the lightning clan attempts to carry the jar, the lightning will be released.
Fire Relic
Description
Deep beneath the ground of the fire tribe lies a labyrinth of tunnels, hollowed out centuries ago by molten lava. Now leading to the core of an inactive volcano, the tunnels are home to many unfriendly creatures, drawn by the dark and heat. Somewhere within the tunnels lies the fire relic, a constantly blazing fire encased in stone.
The relic is too hot for anyone but a member of the fire tribe to touch.
Wind Relic
Description
An ocarina of great value. This wind instrument was played during the original succession of the barrier, and has been played during every renewal since. It has always remained with honoured members of the Wind Tribe, until recently when it disappeared without a trace.
It can only be approached by individuals of the Wind element. If any member of the other elements attempts to touch the relic they will be repelled by a strong gust of wind.
Water Relic
Description
A scale from a one of a kind water dragon has been chosen as the water relic. Little is known about the dragon as it is almost always submerged within some body of water in the water territory, though it has been seen above water during the full moon.
A member of the water tribe must be the one to pluck the scale. If anyone but an individual of the water element attempts to touch the relic their hand will move through it like water.
