It's Been a While

"Oh, the perfect husband?" He smirked, playing a slow riff. "You're all about the physical touch, aren't you? And expand on this 'among other things,' if you don't mind..." He returned her wink.

"Describe these children more than 'extremely adorable and perfect,'" he requested, nudging her thigh with his shoulder. "I want to get to know these fictional children. Will they adopt the animals from the shelter or buy them as babies from the breeders?"

John grinned at the mention of a hot tub. "Good choice. I sort of want to live in an ancient Victorian house. With ghosts and secret passageways."

Bentley grinned mischievously, "Oh you know... Sex... And more sex. Fun stuff"

"The boy is going to want to buy from a breeder, but the little girl is going to want to adopt every little puppy from the shelter. She's going to have the biggest heart, and so is her brother, but he's going to keep it internal. He's also going to love baseball, and she's going to play volleyball."

She shook her head, laughing softly. "I doubt that'll happen but I guess you never know, right?"

"Oh, so that's what you consider fun stuff?" He grinned mischievously. "How do you know that sex is fun?"

He was amused by her explanation of her fictional children. "All good, all good... What if you have a kid who's completely mental? What then?"

Bentley shrugged, smirking at him. "Well, if they are I will love them regardless. They're my child after all."

She scooted a bit closer to John. "What about you? What's your ideal life in twenty years?" She asked him. And does it have me in it?

"Hmm." John stopped to think about that for a while.

"I would have my doctorate, all of my college loans done and payed off. I would be working where I'm interning, but actually have some say in what goes on. And then at home I would probably have a wife, someone who also works. I don't expect her to wait on me hand and foot and to do nothing but cook, clean, and have babies. Then again, I would like some children eventually..."

Bentley nodded, picking at some grass beside her as she listened. "What else? You're being vague."

She offered him a small smile and leaned back to look up at the cloudless sky. Everything felt like the world was perfect, but it wasn't. She was just a girl with too many dreams.

An older couple walked by and turned to smile down at John and herself, waving a bit. Bentley waved back, smiling.

"I'm vague because I don't give myself the luxury of wishful thinking," he replied, just as vague. He closed his eyes for a moment , the guitar ceasing to make its music.

"Did you miss me while you were in there?" He asked after a few moments of silence. "Don't lie to me. I want the truth."she

Bentley looked up at him as he spoke, her eyes widening a bit at his sudden question. "You want the truth?"

"You were constantly on my mind. You were the driving force behind everything I did in there to get better. So yes, I missed you a lot." She responded, her eyes downcast.

John froze at her words. He had been expecting something like, yeah, I thought about you when they were asking if my friends or loved ones influenced my drinking. But that? It had never even crossed his mind to even hope for that. There's no way that he was just hallucinating that, was there?

He slowly set his guitar beside him in the grass and turned, taking her into his arms. "I didn't know we were that...serious before you went in." That was a lie, of course. When he was in high school, he had been bent on marrying her as soon as they were out of college. But he wanted to know where she stood.

Bentley gratefully accepted his embrace. She'd always planned out in her mind what she wished to say when she first saw him again. How she was going go explain to him how important he had been to her. That the drinking wasn't to get away from him.

"I felt like we were. It was nice," she mumbled against his chest. Unshod tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but she kept them back.

After a moment, Bentley pulled back slightly so that she could look up at John. "Thank you for helping me get through all of that," she whispered.

"I didn't do anything but hack away at my studies here without you," he responded with a sad chuckle, holding her tightly to him. He had almost forgotten how good it felt to just be with her, to think about anything but his degree for just a moment. "But things were so much less complicated when we were first together. I didn't have to worry about money, school, actually finding a job that I don't hate to work at for the rest of my life... It's stressful. But it will help now that I have you back."

At least that much was true. He had had more fun with her that day than he had in a long while. "I just hope that things stay this simple. I know they won't; life never works out that way."

Bentley nodded. One of her biggest fears about coming out of rehab was the fact she would have to actually get her life back, and having the baggage of alcoholism on her shoulders wasn't going to help.

"But for now, let's enjoy what we have and not worry about the future okay? I'm much too happy just sitting here with you to worry about my life five years from now. " she mumbled.

She wanted him closer, but since they were in public that wasn't entirely an option.

He buried his face in her neck, his hands absentmindedly running through her hair. "You smell the same, you know. I always thought you would smell like hospital when you came back."

She said that she didn't want to talk about the future, but how could it be avoided? The future was here. Now was the time they had only dreamed about when they were high schoolers. Talking about it was unavoidable. "I love you, Bentley."

(Sorry, I was just seeing what dice did... I don't understand it at all.)

Bentley leaned into him, embracing every chance she got to get closer to him. "I think that's a good thing?" She laughed quietly as he exclaimed she smelled the same.

"I love you, John." She whispered. After a few minutes, she pulled away to smile up at him. "What now?" She asked quietly. All she asked was tht she could be with him. Then she would figure out the rest.

(It's okay I don't understand it either haha!)

"That's an excellent thing." His lips barely brushed across her throat before he pulled her even more tightly against him. He was just glad that she smelled like Bentley again, with no trace of booze.

"What now, as in after this park visit, or what now as in our relationship?" He asked quietly.

Bentley shivered as his lips touched her skin. She had missed that so much. Godddd she thought to herself. Ive missed you.

"Both I guess," she replied, equally as quiet. She wasn't sure where to go or what to do but she needed him. She ran a hand through John's hair, playing with te ends a bit.

He leaned heavily into her hand when she played with his hair. "You're not ready to think about the future, are you?" He asked her, closing his eyes. "You just want to coast along for as long as we can, if I'm understanding you. You really just want to go with whatever happens?"

John had missed her more than he would care to admit. It just cemented in his mind that they were good for each other because if she wasn't meant to be his, this wouldn't feel so right still, even after two years.

Bentley smiled softly and smoothed back his hair as he leaned into her hand. The future held too many uncertainties, too many things that could go wrong. She didn't need the stress of potentially losing him clouding her mind.

"Let's just focus on us. Right now, I'm sitting next to you in a park and everything is perfect." She whispered as her hand dropped down and was placed loosly on his neck.

"I just got out if rehab, John. My main goal is to stay out of that place, and keep you happy." She stated quietly as she gazed into his eyes.
