INTRODUCTION
Makuran, island of heroes.
A place of legend, but not myth. Once, a race of humanoid beings known as torens walked the earth; beings said to share traces of blood with the gods who rule the heavens. Though their power may have been great, so too was the risk of proudly bearing their name. Due to the inherent dangers they posed to mankind, they were often marked as priority targets and steadily began to dwindle in number during warfare. Sages of their kin sensed that if things did not change, their existence may be entirely erased -- and so they combined their forces, using powerful magic to carve out a tremendous plot of land once held by the now venerable kingdom of Linwar.
That land now floats high above in the sky, no longer reachable by any means; even to themselves. Anyone who descends to the surface will find themselves unable to return home. Although the population of torens down below have now all but fizzled out, on this island they thrive amongst their fellow humans and demihumans; but not without adversity. Most live out peaceful lives in Makuran. Resources are abundant. Conflicts are swiftly quelled. The standard of living is, frankly, extraordinarily high.
But the island is small. Restricting. Perhaps even suffocating to some. Not only that, but its inhabitants are made well aware of the troubles in the world that exists beneath their tranquil home: War, corruption, slavery, famine, disease -- some are unable to ignore the call to action, not while they have the strength of gods coursing through their veins, ready to help others when needed. They lived in ignorance, wasting their true potential by hiding in fear from everything... such thoughts were had between adolescent torens as they gazed wistfully beyond the edge of their little green rock.
This story is about your descent.
PLOT
Every year, the Makurans hold the Falling Star Festival, celebrating the departure of their loved ones into Alatoa -- the surface of the planet upon which all life originates. A select number of humans, demihumans, and torens who live amongst them gather their willpower to venture into the great unknown, saying their last farewell to their friends and families before leaving them behind forever.
Upon arriving, you have been instructed to find the nearest settlement, make a name for yourself, and explore the world to your heart's content as you see fit. And, if possible, venerate the name of the torens as heroes so that the island may one day finally rejoin with the mainland with peace of mind. However, something else is brewing... the nations are at war, and a pack of impressionable young torens is just what they are looking for.
SETTING
The world of Alatoa has evolved greatly since Makuran was born. Things you've never seen or even heard of exist in abundance amongst the wealthiest of nations -- airships, muskets, steam trains; a tremendous technological leap forward, to those who can afford such luxuries.
However, your tale does not begin there. Instead, you arrive in the moderately less robust, yet still notable empire of Quiol. Slightly more familiar ground to the unaccustomed torens, where there is nary a single rifle in sight, save for the rare export attained by especially wealthy aristocrats. However, while a variety of species are home to Makuran, sentient or otherwise, they are only a minute sample of the vast biological ecosystem of this world's environment.
While records of Alatoa's history exist in on your island, the copies you read in your history classes are outdated... by 700 years.
TORENS
Torens are powerful beings. They can be humans or demihumans, but they all share the same trait: A droplet's worth of blood imbued with divinity. This grants them not only a considerable advantage in strength, speed, and magical prowess, but an innate power unique to each toren that reflects the deity from whom they have descended. This primarily manifests as a special weapon they can summon known as a Divine Shard, or shard for short. Not every toren is able to manifest these powers; in fact, without being exposed to a truly deadly encounter, almost none of them ever do. As a result, the number of shard wielders who live in the relative safety of Makuran number only in single digits.
A shard can be recalled, dismissed, regenerated, and even duplicated instantaneously, so long as its users pool of magical energy has not reached its limit. A toren's divine power, known as a blessing, can be amplified twofold or greater when channeled through a shard. It vanishes if the creator loses consciousness or dies, and interestingly enough, they cannot be harmed by their own shards. Traditionally, magic has to be learned through studying rune words, memorizing them, and reciting them in your head (or aloud), but a blessing requires no training to use or understand right away. Mastery over it is another story.
A toren can be distinguished from other lifeforms by their slightly glowing eyes. It is normally undetectable, but when exceeding the power traditionally granted by their species, they will begin to radiate more fiercely.
- This roleplay is intended for writers who have some level of confidence in their writing skill. There's no pressure to meet any kind of specific standard and I won't ask for evidence of your ability, I figured I should just let it be known what I am hoping for when we dig into the story.
- Don't post that you're interested if you don't actually intend on joining. Thanks.
- No post length! Make it super short or super long, whatever you feel fits.
- Try to make 1 - 2 characters to start out with (preferably 1), more can be added as the story continues.
I encourage EVERYONE to make additions to the lore on the fly, but here's a guideline for what new things you can add, and what you might want to ask about first.
