Fantasy Islamic/Arabian fantasy setting

Caliphate

New Member
The fantasy genre is one of the most versatile and expansive genres, but a good deal of high fantasy, which gains mainstream popularity is based around European history/ballads/legends, which is understandable due to the wealth of European lore and stories available to use, and due to how influential European history has been to the modern world.
However I would like to create a fantasy setting which has more in tune with Arabic/Islamic culture, possibly the Almohad or Umayyad/Abbasid Caliphates. I think there are a lot of resources to use here and room for some very interesting ideas and themes. I think it could also blend well with high fantasy elements or sword and sorcery. I imagine this idea is probably not unique but I still think it's a good area to explore.

I am open to any suggestions or ideas, thanks for reading.

I've been wanting to do this sort of setting for ages.

This is a fascinating premise! To be honest, the only experience I have with islamic fantasy is Scheherezade and Alladin. I think I read some novels once, as a kid, where the setting was arabic high fantasy-esque, but I don't remember any titles. I'd love to discuss it more!

Yes it is rather overlooked, but I think there’s a lot of potential for exciting stories and unique characters.
many ideas are welcome.

Sounds interesting and would like to hear more. I have a character, specifically an alternate version of this character, who is a young mage. In one storyline with this version, he had a magic carpet. I would have to modify certain elements if I was in.

I don't have much knowledge beyond Aladdin, the NES game The Magic of Scheherazade and a bit of the PC game Magic Carpet. I've not played those two games in many years, especially the later.

I think there is something appealing about the ancient/medieval Arabic setting that is quite appealing, it's familiar but just different enough to lend itself to some really unique ideas. But usually when it's represented in media, it's just western or Chinese story with an Arabic coating actually anything close to a proper Arabic story.
