I feel that its sudden burst of popularity is odd, but personally, I do enjoy games like that. Before Among Us, I played a similar game called Town of Salem; I haven’t heard that much on Town of Salem, however.

I wouldn't say it's overrated, considering I haven't seen anyone claiming that it's a great game to begin with. It's like any other mafia/werewolf spin offs. The simpler gameplay and art probably makes it more popular than Town of Salem.

I personally think it is. But I’m a little biased since the main reason I dislike it is because it involves heavy player interaction which I’m not good at.

Overrated? Eh, I don't think so. It's a good game from what I can tell, and that's about how people are treating it. And sure, it's super exploded in popularity but give it a few weeks to a month and the popularity will die down again. It's a phase, a wave.
