vampire lore

scroll

Vampires are undead supernatural creatures. Their origins are unknown, but they have existed since the dawn of humanity. They survive off the blood of mammals, but they find the blood of humans more fulfilling and satisfying. Additionally, they are created and not born. A vampire can choose to turn a human into a fellow vampire through blood exchange. A vampire would feed off of a human until they are near death and the human consuming the vampire's blood would begin the transformation. The transformation requires three blood exchanges within three days. The human in question almost always perishes if this ritual is not completed.

Vampires are not living, so they cannot age or die of natural causes. While their body still functions as if they were alive, they do not need food, water, or even oxygen (though they can be consumed, it will not satisfy any needs). Physically, vampires are much stronger, faster, and agile than humans, making them rather difficult to fight. They have a heightened sense of smell. Additionally, though they feel pain, vampires do not injure easily.

However, they are not completely invulnerable. Vampires have a weakness for religious or holy items such as crosses, holy water, etc. Silver also carries the same effects. Vampires are often physically repelled by these items and are burned when they make contact with their skin. However, these do not kill them. Vampires can be killed by three means: a stake or other wooden object to the heart, decapitation, and being set on fire. Vampires cannot step foot on consecrated grounds. However, some commonly believed weaknesses are a myth. They do not need permission to enter a dwelling and garlic does not affect them. Not appearing in reflections and turning into bats are also myths. Very old, very powerful vampires may have additional powers, but it is exceedingly rare. Of course, sunlight was also deadly to vampires, causing burning upon contact and death with prolonged exposure (though this clearly has not been a problem since they have eliminated the daytime).

Their starkest difference from humans is their lack of soul. In general, vampires usually only care about bringing themselves more power and pleasure, often lacking compassion for others, a conscience, and remorse. Vampires retain parts of their past human selves, though they become a twisted, corrupted version of that person upon losing their soul. They are theoretically capable of feeling human emotions, though it is rare.
