In need of an idea quickly

The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment
In the game I'm starting today, I plan to have the characters run into the Grim Legion in a town that they've "quarantined" due to some sort of demonic activity.

The problem is, I'm running into a mental block about exactly what that actvity is, and how the Legion would have gotten wind of it. I need to borrow a cup of creatvity.

Go!

an ermithois going through the streets ripping people to shreds?

a cultist murdering people in the name of his black master.

A calf was born with two heads.  It lived long enough to crawl out and die at a spot of recently turned earth.  The Grim Legion happened to be near enough to hear of this and came to investigate.  They dug at the spot and found that a baby was buried there that had also been born with two heads.  Now they want to know who the witch or demon-breeder is that bore this obvious sign of evil! Burn the Witch!

The ever prodigious demonic cult is summoning said demons but is targeting both humans and spirits. I'm assuming there's God-Blooded in the Grim Legion. If so, one of the gods targeted by the cult is one of the God-Blooded's parent, or is a friend of a friend of a friend of that parent, and has asked for help.

Then there's the rising column of foul putrescence the cultists created in summoning the demons and the Legion just so happened to be passing in the area. Coincidence can be your friend.

Lastly, one of the Legion could have the Alternative Divination and/or Prescient Dreamer Merits, and she got a dream or divination about it. In that case, any demon activity could do, including a summoning gone wrong.....

My 2 cents.

Actually, reading these posts triggered a chain of thoughts, and I came up with a lot mor ematerial than I was even hoping for. Thanks!

I had already planned to have a group of demons summoned into Creation by a mortal cult. It was going to be the PC's job to track them down and stop whatever nefarious scheme they were part of. I just wasn't sure what that scheme was myself, so I planned to worry about it later. I just knew I wanted to get the Legion into the picture.

Here's what I just came up with in the shower:

During the Primordial War, the Exalted were frustrated that each time they slew a Third Circle demon (a monumentous task in itself), the Primordial who spawned it would eventually generate a new one. As an experiment, they trapped a 3rd Circle demon in a specially contructed artifact, which they then dismantled, thus sundering his spirit without destroying him.

These fragments were then scattered across Creation, hidden away so that they could not be re-assembled. The seven undersouls of this demon were severely weakened and handicapped by this process, and have languished in Malfeas as mad, broken souls. Due to their insanity and dimished powers, they were all but useless to Exalted sorcerors, and thus their names and natures were not passed down through demonological tomes.

Now, they have been let loose in Creation, and they seek to restore the artifact and free their master, and thus themselves. They do not know themselves where the pieces are hidden, but they are intuitively drawn to their general whereabouts. In their broken state, they are not able to materialize, or affect the physical world in any way, except to posess a mortal host, similar to the demon Azazel in Fallen. Also, wherever they travel, their demonic essence bleeds into their surrounds, causing strange omens and manifestations.

The Legion is going to come into play when one of these demons, in a mortal host, comes to a small Eastern town, sensing that a fragment of his master's soul is somewhere nearby. His very presence causes strange lights in the night sky, calves are stillborn with horrible deformities, and the townsfolk are plagued with nightmares. The Legion will hear rumor of this, and suspecting and infernal cause, quarantine the town and its residents until they can find the source of the evil.

Sounds pretty excellent. And you get the dichotomy of the PCs having to find the demon and/or artifact and prevent the Legion from wiping out the town.

It'd be interesting to see what would happen if another one of the souls happened along and possessed one of the Legion. Or, if they manage to exorcise the demon from the town, then it possesses one of the Legionaires. It might be a way to foreshadow what's to come.

But nice story idea.

And so the Wanderer headed East...always to the East...

... I knew I recognised that from somewhere... though for some reason I was thinking Saiyuki or something. Dunno why.

Maybe their is no demonic activity, it's all just one big lie...

It is really just a distraction to hide some other activity going on in the area.

What that is thou, is kinda down to you.
