They arrive to a brutal dictatorship installed by the US Fruit Company where the locals are worked as slaves under thugs armed with American rifles. Undaunted, they continue their dig.
They do not return.

Contact with Guatemala is broken. Many nations around the Gulf of Mexico begin to fall silent - reports of dark, winged figures and a fanatical cult filter northward, but plans to intervene are halted by Pearl Harbour. WWII continues until 1945.

The US Government finally becomes aware of the threat growing in Latin America. Immigration laws become harsher, military defenses are installed at the border, and aid is sent to Mexico to hold their own border. All news on the topic is censored. Even so, isolated cases of occult activity crop up over the next few years, leading to rumours and fringe cults.

Senator McCarthy leads the foundation of the Bureau for Inhuman Activities, obfuscated as the Bureau for Unamerican Activities. Ruthlessly, they investigate and arrest those accused of holding certain texts, expressing certain opinions, and talking about things they should not know. McCarthy insists it is for the greater good. Other Senators are hard pressed to disagree.
