Hoyo!
Here be the lore for Impossible Victory!!
(brace yourselves, it's a lot, XD)
Veilbrand is the name of the central nation of this RP. And before its fall from grace under the heel of a tyrannical dictator, this is what life was like...
Veilbrand is the Southwestern most nation out of five which exist on the continent called "Cre' Est."
Its terrain is fairly well moisturized from 6 rivers and 3 large lakes which line its landscape and prevent it from becoming an otherwise dry and airid locale.
It has a few major landmarks it's famous for, including the central mountain reach which resembles an arm, hence the name, and a hand, also hence the name.
As for a very basic and colorized view of the map, it looks something like this:
So, as you can see it's a fairly well balanced place when it comes to forest to plains/grasslands to bodies of water and mountains. But it's most famous for its mountains and the metalwork that comes from being so entrenched in such a deeply rich resource zone such as it is. The precious gem mining operations all but revolutionized the currency-based system in place that drives the economy of all nations save Shaharan (which is a trade-based economy) over the last few centuries.
Overall, Veilbrand is a place that prides itself on its balance and stability. Before the fall, people were self-assured, self-made success stories almost every which way. With plenty of resources and resource gathering operations, if they had to close off trade with other nations they easily could do so without fear of any major economic or social downfall.
Culture
Veilbrand's culture is very European in its design, and I specifically borrow from Renaissance Italy. Any fan of Assassin's Creed 2 will know what I'm talking about.
Buildings are typically connected in various patterns across the city, but usually center on the concept of symmetry for singular buildings of importance such as churches, town halls, etc. This conjoined building style allows almost any parkour experts a wonderful playground to explore, by the way. Rooftops are often clay arched shingles, or flat shingles. And for buildings of importance the featured dome tops are commonplace. A secondary common sigh are gothic towers in square formations in prisons or heavily guarded installations.
Because the nation used to have a generously spread economic wealth, it used to be difficult to tell commoners from nobility. Linen, cotton, and wool were all commonplace materials used in clothing across social classes. So it was not uncommon to look through a crowd and see everyone looking well dressed and ready for a day on the town. Most women would wear elegant, long, one-piece dresses. And most men would wear fine tunics or long-sleeved shirts with button-up seams along the arms, as well as fine leather pants and boots.
Socially, Veilbrand used to maintain a rather peaceful relationship between commoners and nobility. To see them intermix and mingle was common. And it was rare that any nobles were so high on their status that they would talk down to anyone of a "lower" position than they had. It did happen on occasion. But it was also not uncommon to see the other nobles berate them for such behavior until they left the scene in a huff.
Given all this, it should come as little to no surprise that the motto of Veilbrand used to be: "One heart beats between us all."
Unity was paramount. And (almost) everyone relied on and respected one another to lead a happy coexistence with their neighbors, communities, and fellow countrymen everywhere.
Final points of culture are that Veilbrand was once polytheistic, worshipping a total of 6 Gods:: Auxereilla, the Mother of All, and Queen of the Gods. Herval, the God of Wisdom. Yrita, the Goddess of Purity and Love. Kurom, the God of the Harvest. Neitha, the Goddess of the Heavens (aka the weather, but they relate all weather to the Heavens). And Fasoth, the God of MIsfortune.
Marriage in Veilbrand was centered on love, and although it wasn't unheard of it was exceedingly rare for any politically based marriages to happen. Infidelity, while frowned upon, was punished only insofar as the marriage was immediately nullified and the unfaithful partner would endure a monetary fine of up to 100 Silver ($2,000) depending on the ruling by the presiding judge, as such matters are always settled in court.
Speaking of, the currency system works like this: 1 Copper is basically $1. 1 Silver is $20, or 20 Copper. And 1 Gold is $500, or 25 Silver and 500 Copper.
Lastly, Veilbrand used to be a Monarchy with a ruling King and Queen who were the absolute authority in the land. They would have advisors and other figures around them to help them compartmentalize the issues faced by the nation so they could better understand the wants and needs of the people. And for the most part they were very attentive to it. The last time Veilbrand was unhappy with its rulers was around 150 years ago. But since then, life's been pretty dang prosperous all around.
Egruus To' Veilbrand, formerly known simply by his first name, Egruus, was a general in the Veilbrand military. He was always a very stern, brash, and abrasive fellow. But nobody would have ever pegged him as a potential tyrant or a usurper of the throne.
But evidently, that's exactly what he was all along. Through careful manipulation of those in his military circle, and through calculated indoctrination of the troops under his command, he managed to brainwash an entire generation of soldiers into believing him to be the singular authority they must follow. It took him almost 20 years to accomplish this behind the scenes. And once he was ready he staged a coup which hit too hard and too fast for the bulk of the royal guards protecting the palace to respond to. He stormed the central hall, and the throne room, and personally slayed the King and Queen. With them gone, he posted their heads on pikes outside the palace, and proclaimed himself the new ruler of Veilbrand.
And afterwards, as the saying goes, everything went to shit. Fast.
Monetary wealth was hoarded in the capitol city of Valoc, and the cities most immediately surrounding it. The military, which used to have a sparse presence more intended simply to be intimidation of intruding forces or would-be brigand raids, was heavily bolstered nation-wide to the point of being suffocating, and now that its comprised of men who follow Egruus and his sadistic, twisted rulership, these forces which used to be a sign of protection are now a source of fear and panic for those caught in their sights.
These military forces are just as twisted as Egruus is now. For fun, they will randomly walk through town and pick the first person they find and "play" with them. And by play they mean beat the tar out of them, if they're a woman you can guess what they'll do, if they're a kid they'll treat them like a dog and put a collar and leash on them and walk them through the streets, etc. From time to time, they'll pick a random house or place of business and burn it to the ground and dance around the flames like it's a bonfire at the beach. And if they're feeling particularly sadistic and happen to see a man/woman that look like a couple, they'll go out of their way to make up accusations of infidelity and implement Egruus' new punishment.
What's the punishment? For men, it's castration. For women, it's the removal of her left ring finger so she could never wear a wedding band again, and a branding of the symbol for "infidelity" on the back of her left hand.
This has gone on for the last 12 years. And Veilbrand is now beyond a shadow of its former self.
Almost every major city, outside of the few closest to Valoc, are now dilapidated and run down to the point of being unrecognizable. The people are now almost entirely living in poverty due to the lack of economic stability or maintenance. Farms and ranches are left unattended, so crops aren't growing and livestock are dying out.
Because of where things stand, the new motto of Veilbrand is: "If I can take it, it's mine."
Thievery isn't even thievery anymore, really. It's just life. And for most people in Veilbrand, if something of theirs ends up going missing, they blame themselves for leaving it exposed enough to steal and then shrug it off and look for their next meal from whatever they can find.
It's a truly pathetic place now. However, that's why we have the Revolution!
The Revolution began almost as soon as Egruus rose to power. The one who started it was never publicly identified, but the truth is that it's currently the Maiden's #2. A man named Shor. More on him later.
The Revolution started out big with over 10,000 people joining and trying their hand at learning to fight so they could try and retake their homeland. However, this enthusiasm and determination were quickly smothered over the first year of Egruus' rule as he toyed with their forces time and again before all but wiping it out entirely. In fact, he did just that. The Revolution was officially disbanded for about 8 months before re-emerging. This time, however, people were not so quick to jump on the freedom train.
The nation remembers what happened before. How quickly things fell apart. And easily Egruus and his forces toyed with them. So they're not looking to join if they don't have to. Especially without any doctors or nurses left to help tend the sick and injured. Egruus entrapped or slaughtered all in those professions to prevent the Revolution from having access to them.
Brief tangent, there have been a total of 4 Maidens so far. The first one was assassinated early in the Revolution's first run, but was quickly replaced as she had a twin sister who was kept in hiding unless needed. When the Revolution was routed, she died along with the last of their forces. The third Maiden was a lookalike that Shor found in a back alley on one of Veilbrand's coastal cities. She was assassinated around 2 years ago, and replaced by the current Maiden almost immediately as Shor had found her in the middle of her predecessor's run and groomed her as quickly as possible for the role.
The fact that the Maiden is in her 4th generation is a strictly guarded secret. Even the three people she keeps closest don't know that she's the 4th of her position. They think she's the original Maiden who was there when it all started. And that's just the way it has to be for right now. Whether they'll learn that truth or not remains to be seen.
And there we have the lore for now!
If there's anything left unanswered here then please send me a PM!!
