I feel like the main forum page it too long, and I'd like to streamline it down a bit.

The Newbie Help forum is the least posted-to, and most of the questions in there could easily fit one of the other categories instead.

My plan is to move all of the posts in that forum to the General forum, and delete it.

Objections?

I dunno about that.

The Newbie Forum may be the least posted in Forum, because most of the folks here are veterans, but it's nice for the newcomers, and we're getting more in all the time, to have a Forum of their own.

It's a welcoming device that I think helps the community be supportive of newcomers and noobs to the game.  If we roll the Newbie forum into General, I think we'll lose a little of the welcoming atmosphere that ECR has for noobs, and it could also generate the old skool "Not this tripe again" feel that repeated questions bring up.

At least if it's posted in the Newbie Forum, you have an instant recognition that it's someone who isn't all that experienced, and identifys with that noob label, which instantly disarms some of the rising bile and annoyance of another question.

It disarms and puts folks more at ease in asking questions and popping up where they are unclear of things.

I don't think folks are all that averse to scrolling down.  If we are going to encorporate the submissions section into Lore5 anyhow, then you're going to shave some space there from the sections that are going to be ported over, right?  So, why get rid of one of the things that sets ECR apart and makes noobs feel more welcome?  If we want to be inclusive and create a commuity where we help each other, I think that the Newbie Forum goes a long way to show that, right off the bat.  It's a nice statement of purpose and a statement about the community.

I wholly support this decision to combine these two forums.  I agree that the main page seems a bit long... well, at least I think it could be streamlined more.  And of all the possible combinations, this seems the most reasonable.

Well, at this point, it's a 4:4 tie... however, one of those votes  was mine, and Jakk's changed my mind.

I'm going to think on it some more, and see what else can be consolidated/removed.

Since a majority of newbie questions seem to relate to the game's mechanics, then why not blend the newbie forum with the Auto forum?

For the reasons Jakk outlined, basically.

Here's my alternative proposal:

Delete the "International" forum, since it doesn't get much play anyway. Merge the Lore5 Discussion Board into the Redux Project Board, and make the programmer's forum invisible to non-members.

I've reset the poll/subject to reflect this new proposal.

That sounds like a better proposal.

Nothing against our international members, but perhaps a sitcky somewhere for non-English speaking folks to let them know that threads in other languages are just fine, or pop them to the top so our international members can always find them?

That sounds okay to me, but then I am not using the Internatioanl ones.

You could try to make local spacific versions of the forum, (Something like es.patternspider.net for the Spanish speekers.) but sounds like a lot of work.

go for it.

I'm "International"...

... Never understood why an international forum is necessary. Then again, I come from a country where pretty much everybody speak english, and the rest have at least a rudimentary understanding of written/spoken text in english, even though they might not be very proficient at procuring it on their own.

Done.

I think the page looks a lot leaner now. Mods, and members of the programmer's user group will see a couple of extra private forums.

memesis: Can you verify that you can see the "Furnace Transcendant" forum?
