Advice/Help I'm struggling to come up with ideas for furry/anthro roleplay; seeking advice/feedback.

Hi, all! So, a majority of my original characters are anthropomorphic animals (furries is a more popular shorthand term for them) and I'd really like to finally roleplay them with someone, but I haven't seen any furry roleplays on here. It doesn't surprise me - kind of a niche community, I ought to know - and I'm sure that (since I'm new to the site) I'll gonna see some pop up sooner or later. Still, I'd like to start one of my own, just in case it takes a while.

I'm not going to ask for ideas outright, and I'm not checking for interest, but I'd appreciate any feedback I could get on the few concepts I do have.
  • GROUP FANDOM RP: Furvilla - So, for the unintiated, Furvilla is a game for the web browser that centers around furry/mythical anthro characters living in 5 realms. I haven't actually played it in many years but for a while it was one of my favorite games. It's already got its own worldbuilding, lore, and fandom. I could double as various NPCs in the RP so that people are free to roleplay as their own OCs or Villagers (as the players' characters in the game are called) or everyone could RP as pre-existing characters within the world.
  • GROUP ORIGINAL RP: Furries with Superpowers - I think superpowers, superheroes, and supervillains are so fun to write and read about, so the prospect of a furry RP with superpowered characters really interests me! I'd want to work with people in the interest check to set rules and limitations on what powers can be had (to keep it fair and balanced.)
It's been a very long time since I've roleplayed, so I don't have a ton of ideas at the moment. Any advice on generating RP ideas (or input on these two) is appreciated! Thanks for reading :)

I really don't know much about the furry/anthro subgenre (if one might call it that), but I will say if you believe you are dealing with an already niche community, making your potential audience even narrower is just shooting yourself in the foot. This will happen to a minor extent whatever you do of course, but a fandom is particularly prone to falling to that problem. A 1x1 you might have a better chance, but in group especially I think you might be running into a simple lack of sufficient interest.

I would also recommend maybe trying to make a poll or a thread to check for things that other people into anthro characters might be into, particularly in terms of larger genres that you might be able to splash into the ideas you're interested in. For instance, if you found a large number of people into furries/anthros enjoy the fantasy flavor, maybe you could make your superpower idea into a fantasy idea with a unique-power-based magic system.

Oh, so your thinking like a zootopia sort of thing?
That's pretty cool! This is super late response but I mean I see warrior cats everywhere. I could be vastly wrong about what that is but I mean it seems it might be the same sort of concept.
Oh top of that, I see people doing animal role plays all the time. Just not walking around but I mean if its a zootopia thing I can see it. Good luck with that idea! I hope Idea's response did not deter you from exploring your creativity, in some places it may be niche but you may find a great community here

Pretty much like Zootopia, yep! ^_^ In fact, I recently heard that Zootopia 2 was announced, so I might see if anyone's interested in a Zootopia 2 roleplay after the movie comes out. I think posting an interest check about a newer, more famous work of furry fiction (like Zootopia 2 will be post-release) would probably be my best chance of finding someone to roleplay anthropomorphic animals with. IIRC the first movie was a hit with furries upon release. Here's to hoping the sequel is good! LOL. :closed eyes open smile:

Back when I first got into roleplay, I started out with Warrior Cats, so the genre is super familiar to me, but I've sadly lost interest in it. Maybe someday something will rekindle that specific spark, like reading one of the books... Until then, though, roleplays as regular animals aren't something I'd feel confident about roleplaying. Thank you for the suggestion, though! It's good to hear the WC roleplay genre is alive and well

Back to Zootopia, though: I think the film's sequel, when it comes out, would be a really great starting off point for a fandom-based furry RP, since Zootopia is one of the more well-known works of anthro animal media and I'll be striking when the iron's hot (the first Zootopia came out in 2017, whew!) In the meantime, though, I probably will make a poll at some point to see what genres people are most interested in roleplaying anthro characters in (so I can roleplay some of my OCs.)

Thank you both again for your input! ^_^

I'm not a furry/anthro roleplayer, but I feel like Zootopia and Animal Crossing are two IP that have mainstream appeal. During the times they came out, I saw a lot of people make OCs for them so I could see them getting interest. If you want to go a more fantasy route, Mice & Mystics as well as Redwall would be two good inspirations to draw from.

Once you get some good ideas I would put up a poll, and if you get enough interest, get a recruitment thread up ASAP.

i'm not exactly sure whether to call myself a furry/anthro RPer, but i have my fair share of anthro characters (Insect characters tend to be my go to), and my go to worldbuilding allows for their existence and is semi based around it. Ah, i guess i'm just in denial and used to being insulted. But if you're looking for people who'd be interested in your ideas for a Group Anthro RP, count me as one of them, or as an option for a 1x1 RP! I have my own fair share of ideas I've been looking to use for an RP.
