With his laptop and his cell phone long forgotten somewhere else in the cabin, Wesley couldn't help but feel a sense of renewed self. For the last five years, his only goals in life had been career-based. For the most part, he didn't care about maintaining relationships or friendships. Hell, he had even cut many ties with family members, or only talked to them if he absolutely needed to. Of course, there were some people he kept in contact with. Cameron, for one, and Whitney and Parker every now and again. His parents only called him for business purposes or the required holiday dinners. His grandparents were gone. Coworkers were only people he worked with. Hell, even the guys from college were more so his employees now than his friends. It was a lonely life he led. But it was the life he chose, his way to the top, to achieve what he thought were his goals and dreams. Or what he told himself were his goals and dreams anyway. But, Anna knew what he really wanted out of life, even if he didn't.

Wesley looked up to see Cam and Jace return to the room and, though her nose was red as if she'd been crying, she looked happy. Maybe Jace wasn't all that bad. Or maybe he just hadn't had a change to be terrible yet. Whatever the case,Wes would keep an eye on him. Caleb and Evelyn were dancing as well, and the brunette businessman couldn't help but grin. Despite his secret sort of friendship with Caleb, and a standard one with Evie, he had always rooted for those too. They might have been blind to it all those years, but almost everyone else could tell there was something between them. Even Ava and Parker seemed to be having a good time, dancing with one another. Wesley's only worry was Ava's husband back home. He hoped Parker knew what he was doing, that he didn't end up getting hurt.

The tempo of the music changed, and what had started as lighthearted and fun got a little bit more nostalgic and serious. Much to his surprise, Whitney wrapped her hands around his neck in typical slow dance fashion, seemingly not as shy and timid as she had once been. Maybe it was the liquid courage, but he hoped deep down it was because she wanted to be closer to him. His blue eyes met hers and he immediately smile, placing both his hands on the small of her back to pull her closer. So close, in fact, that they're bodies brushed against one another when they swayed. "I gotta say, I didn't take you for the mixtape type of girl, but you made quite a good playlist," Wes said with a lightheartedly teasing smirk. "You know, in all those teen dramas and sitcoms on TV, usually the mixtapes are made for the person they have a crush on. So tell me, Whit. Did you have a secret crush in high school? Someone important enough to immortalize in Anna's memory box?"

Parker ( Desert_Blossom Desert_Blossom )

After the emotional roller coaster ride which seemed to have lasted three lifetimes, time finally slowed down. The reason the whole gang was back was unfortunate for sure and a small part of Ava still refused to believe Anna was truly gone but after the funeral, meeting her old high school friends, getting drunk, crying, laughing, fighting, after all this mixture of crazy, they all finally calmed down and entered their own little worlds, ignoring the rest. Ava could see how the couples formed and she couldn’t hide the small smile. It wasn’t like her, or rather, it wasn’t like her former self to be so compassionate but oh well, times change and so do people. She was content in Parker’s arms and wouldn’t change a thing about pairings.

Their eyes met again as Parker commented on everyone being back and Ava nodded. “Almost like old times, huh?” she agreed, lips curled in a luscious smile. “Anna seemed to know more than well what she was doing.” she added as her gaze was sliding around the room. Evie and Caleb were in whispers, Jace and Cam recreated their lost homecoming moment which was the cutest thing ever and Whitney and Wes… Ava somehow knew. Or she had the idea. Whitney was her sister after all, it would be too ignorant even for the former IT girl not to recognize that look in her little sister’s eyes. “Look at them. That’s too adorable.” she whispered to Parker, motioning her head towards the couple. And for a moment, regrets stabbed her in the pit of her stomach. Regrets over opportunities lost.

“Lead. This time, I’ll follow.” she told the class clown and stared straight in his eyes. She wished she had followed back then at the fair when he got her that dog. She wished she had followed many times before when it was clear she had a thing for him. And she wished she had followed before her and Wes’ parents came up with that whole mutually beneficial dating idea which screwed up both of them. Ava leaned into Parker even more, fighting the urge to rest her head on his chest. Ever since she turned her phone off and buried the device deep at the bottom of her large shopper bag, she hadn’t thought about it, or Ben, or her work at all. Her whole focus was here on the cabin, on people and mostly on Parker. And the girl couldn’t get rid of the feeling Anna wanted more for them, for all of them, just to spend time together here.

As Parker leaned closer to her ear, Ava realized her breath hitched. It was not supposed to. She was married. Her eyes found her finger, an empty finger at that, and she was reminded of the missing jewel. However, what surprised her even more was the lack of reaction, the lack of any feeling because she absolutely didn’t care where that rock was. Parker’s voice filled her head soon and she giggled quietly, looking up at him. “You won’t let that go, will you?” she grinned widely and her cheeks turned a scarlet shade of red. “Fine. Snuffles. I named him Snuffles.” she said, looking to the side while chewing on her bottom lip. It was a childish name, a secret name for a plushie a teenager would come up with. And yet, Snuffles was the symbol of something amazing, something Ava never wanted to forget. That’s why he ended up in the time capsule.

Cam ( apolla apolla )

Comforting others was definitely not one of Jace’s strong suits. He was barely able to calm his own son down and it took him way too long to learn what worked on that little boy. How in the hell was he supposed to be that comforting element for the one girl who got away? Yet, it was up to him to go upstairs and find the beautiful blonde. Even if someone else would want to go instead, Jace would have stopped them. If what his heart was telling him was true, it simply had to be him. There had to be some true beginning for him and Cameron. And maybe tonight was it. Tonight which was about fun and memories, no excessive drinking, no fighting, no broken bones and bloody noses. Just the group of friends reinventing their connections and some even reigniting old flames.

Feeling Cam’s small body leaning against him, Jace felt strange warmth spilling inside him and he even closed his eyes as his muscular arm snaked around her, holding her tight by his side so she knew he was there for her. And that he was planning on being there for her from this moment on until she fought him away. Which he would never allow to happen. Not now when she was finally back in his life. Even the pile of muscles covered in tattoos could be emotional, Jace was the perfect proof. THere was the first time for everything and Cam was a trigger for him. Trigger of his softer side which people never knew even existed.

Finally the two made their way downstairs, just as the CD started playing another song. And Jace came up with the idea which was either brilliant and genius or was going to send everything to hell. At first, Cam just stared and to Jace, it seemed like forever. His eyes stayed firmly on the blonde and he willed his hands from shaking. Yes, even a guy like him could be afraid of little things. But then again, Jace was not the exact same tough dude he used to be. At least not when it came to things which actually mattered to him a lot.

A warm smile appeared on Cameron’s face as she agreed and Jace returned it to her. His big, almost clumsy fingers toyed with the corsage band for a moment before he managed to slip it on Cammie’s thin wrist and the box flew on the couch, so there was absolutely nothing standing between them as they wrapped arms around each other. Nobody else existed for the bad boy at that very moment. All other couples disappeared, there was only music and his muse. Cameron was the most important element in that room. “I wouldn’t know.” he shrugged in reaction to her wanting to know what she had missed out. “I got wasted and made some fucked up decisions. I don’t remember much from the dance itself.” he grinned with a hint of guilt shimmering in his eyes. “We can just pretend the Homecoming is now. You know, make some new memories.”

Cameron Hale

Standing here in the living room of the cabin with all of her friends, people that she still cared deeply about even after so much time had passed, Cameron realized that she was happy. For the first time in a long time, she wasn't trying to prove herself to anyone. If she were being honest, she'd never felt like she had to prove herself around anyone here, not even her cousin even though he was part of the family she'd always felt like she didn't belong in. Her parents had made it painstakingly clear since she was young that she needed to be the best. Not even the best she could be, but the best overall. Sports weren't her thing, but she excelled in academics and dance. She had the best tutors and instructors money could buy, and all of that in her schedule left no time for fun and not even really friends.

It wasn't until she was with this group of people she began to discover what fun really could be. Her parents didn't approve, but they didn't mind as much once they knew Wes was a part of that group. They figured that he could help keep an eye on her, make sure she didn't make any permanent mistakes. Of course, there were still things her parents didn't know about, secrets and little white lies she told them to keep them from discovering the truth. Unfortunately, there wasn't any hiding the truth from them now. They would die before they let get out the fact that their daughter was a stripper, but they hadn't hesitated in pulling their money from her bank account. But that was fine, she'd been stashing her own long before they found out, so she wasn't completely fucked.

A small part of Cameron was worried about what would happen once this trip was over. Would she return back to the place she called home now? Back to work? What about the others? What about... Jace? The thought of not having him in her life made her heart clench in a bad way, because now that she had him, she didn't want to let go again. The moment with the corsage was beautiful, and he slipped it onto her wrist before wrapping his arms around her, and she returned the motion. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears as the two of them danced among the other three couples, though she only had eyes for him. "Then it'll be the best Homecoming we've ever been to." She answered, sliding her hands to rest flat against his chest. "I like the idea of new memories. With you."

Caleb Thompson

Despite Caleb's lack of sentiment, he didn't lack in compassion for other people. Sure, he could be selfish at times, out for his own benefit, looking out for himself above everyone else. It was pretty much what he'd done his whole life, because if he didn't, then who else was going to do it? But the fact of the matter was, he hadn't been by himself. He'd had his mother and sister as well, which is probably where the compassion for others came in. In a way, he'd been taking care of himself and them at the same time. He'd always been his little sister's protector, his mother's rock. Maybe it was too much for him to take on at such a young age... and maybe that's why he'd ran. He'd gotten tired of being the one for people to lean on, so he'd up and left. Even after realizing that was a mistake, his pride kept him from returning. At least until Anna's funeral.

And now he was back, but what was going to happen after this? Honestly, the question had crossed his mind already, but he wasn't the type to sit there and think about tomorrow. He lived for now, and that hadn't changed from his younger self. Right now, he was living in the moment, dancing with Evie while their friends did the same around them. At his question, she answered yes without hesitation, bringing a grin to his lips. He felt his shoulders relax, and a small laugh even escaped him. "That was quick as shit." He told her, meeting her softer gaze again. "Honestly, I thought I was going to have to work a little harder for that." He loved the way her hair felt under his calloused fingers, and those same fingers itched to touch her skin as well. He could already see him sliding his hand around the back of her neck, bringing her closer...

Her words about missing him drew him out of his reverie, and he sobered some, his steps faltering but only for a moment. The song came to an end but he didn't release her, not until a moment after she asked him to join her for a smoke. "Absolutely." He nodded, his eyes lingering on her own for a few seconds longer before he finally let go, nodding for her to lead the way. He grabbed his jacket on the way, sticking his arms through and patting the pockets, looking for his smokes. "Hell, I know they're around here somewhere." He muttered, finally finding them in a different pocket. Grinning sheepishly, he followed Evie out onto the deck, placing a cigarette between his lips and then patting himself down again for a lighter. "Alright, I think I'm going to need yours again." He turned to Evie, grinning at her with the cancer stick still in his mouth. "Care to light me up?"

Whitney Jeffries

Despite their kiss in the closet and falling asleep together in the bean bag, Whitney was still reluctant to believe Wes wanted anything more than the easy friendship they’d shared in high school as study partners. Perhaps that had more to do with her own confidence rather than anything Wes did or didn’t do the past couple days, but if history was to be believed, then he’d been with the Jeffries sister he’d had feelings for and Whit was likely just imagining what she wished was true. But yet…

When Wes’s blue eyes met hers the apology she had at the ready for wrapping her arms around his neck melted from her lips. Just as Whit practically melted in his arms when his hands found the small of her back to pull her closer. She loved his smile, and beamed up at him, happier in this simple moment than she’d been in a long time. This memory would definitely be burned into her mind forever, much like the songs burned onto her mix CD. Speaking of which…

Whit scrunched her nose a little when Wes teased her about not being the “mixtape type”, but laughed lightly when he said it was a good playlist. She was glad he liked it- after all most of the songs had been ones playing in the background during their study sessions. Amused, the brunette was about to ask what type of girl he did take her for then, when he inquired if she had a secret crush in high school that she’d made the CD for.

Whitney’s lips parted in surprise, and for a moment she lost her ability to speak. How could Wes know?!

The nerd’s heart started beating quickly as she panicked about how to answer the question. Then she panicked even more that he’d feel her tell-tale heart at this proximity. If she was more like Ava, she’d easily be able to play it cool and throw some ambiguous yet flirty comment back at Wes. But playing it cool was never Whit’s strong suit. The brunette could feel her face flushing- no not just her face, her whole body felt hot with embarrassment- and she suddenly was acutely aware how warm Wes’s hands were on her back.

Had her crush been anyone else other than Wesley Frost, Whitney probably would have admitted it to him. But she couldn’t confess like this. No one was supposed to know Track 11 was for the class prince, especially him. Sure, if this was a teen drama like he said, she’d throw all caution to the wind and declare her feelings before kissing him like no one was watching… but this was real life. And even if a part of her did want to, and her gaze did lower to his smirking lips, and it would be so simple just to say “yes, you”… all her insecurities prevented it.

Whitney glanced in Caleb’s direction for a moment as he and Evie made their getaway, now wishing she’d taken one of the shots he’d been offering earlier. She was much too sober for this topic. The nerd couldn’t tell the truth, but she also couldn’t lie. Not to Wes. Realizing that she’d been silent far too long though, she glanced back at her dance partner and tried to force a casual smile. “Are you calling me cliché, Wes?” She asked softly, resisting the urge to glance down under his gaze.

Parker Pierce

In high school there had always been nine of them. An odd number. It was impossible to pair off without leaving one person left out, and for one reason or another they never did. Even for Prom Parker had been lucky enough to have two dates- Anna and Whit- since the trio tended to be the third wheels to everyone else anyways when not together. But now… their number had become even, and the natural pairings were emerging. And per usual, they had Anna to thank for that. This time it was bitter sweet though, and Parker refused to let himself dwell on that now that the mood had improved.

Following Ava’s gaze when she whispered for him to look, Parker watched his best friend for a moment as he danced with Whitney. Ava didn’t seem upset in any way that her sister had her arms around her ex, and it gave Parker a great deal of satisfaction to know she was fully over Wes. “Guess that explains all those tutor sessions…” Parker joked, not realizing how close to the truth he was. Truthfully, the clown had been crushing so hard on the eldest Jeffries girl that he hadn’t ever considered who the youngest might have a crush on. “Guess maybe you’re right about Anna knowing what she was doing…” He added, turning his attention back to the beautiful girl in his arms as she told him to lead.

“Alright,” Parker replied simply, his grin speaking volumes instead as he held her gaze. More adept at leading the slower song, Parker held Ava close, reveling in the moment when she leaned in even closer. How he wished they were alone. How he wished she was single. He inhaled slowly, breathing in the scent of her shampoo and lingering perfumes, before exhaling wistfully. Needing a safe distraction, he inquired about the name of her stuffed dog again, and was pleased to receive an answer this time. Pleased and amused.

“Snuffles…” Parker repeated, rather surprised at the name, but doing his best not to laugh as promised. The red flush on Ava’s cheeks was enough for him, and he resisted teasing her further. For now. “I think it suits him.” Parker grinned, glancing over at the stuffie for a moment.

The end of the song brought his attention back to Ava though and he peered down at her, not sure whether she wanted to continue dancing. He’d caught Caleb and Evie making their way outside, and the thought that they might be doing more than smoking did cross his mind for a moment. The song “Feel So Close” by Calvin Harris started playing and Parker chuckled a little. The song definitely was fitting for the moment between Ava and him- at least in his mind. “Another fast one, huh? You feel like leading again or should we take this as our cue to leave the dance floor?” He teased, still not releasing her quite yet.

Whatever was happening that evening, Evelyn knew that it was all by design. Even if she didn't know exactly what would happen when they all reunited over so nostalgic music, booze, and vacation location, Anna knew where and how things would end, how she hoped they would end. The petite fiery woman knew them better than anyone else, probably better than they knew themselves or even wanted to know themselves. Anna was one of the very few people Evie had told her so-called 'tragic backstory' to. But what made them such fast and close friends was that Anna responded in a way that most people didn't. She didn't apologize, didn't show pity on her face. She just smiled and said, "It's okay." Evie had heard 'I'm sorry,' 'Are you okay?' and even 'It'll be okay.' But never that present-tense of 'It's okay.' Something about those words was comforting to Evie, that even if she was sad and grieving, it was okay, normal even.

"Sorry," Evelyn said, a light blue tinging her cheeks as she realized how fast she had responded. She shrugged one shoulder and added in a teasing tone, "Maybe you'll have to work harder tomorrow. But, for once I'm trying to live in the moment like Anna always told me to do. So don't ruin it, okay?" It was true. They would have to have a conversation about what happened eventually. But the brunette baker refused to let it ruin that night, not when she had already made so much progress on letting go of the negativity for a bit. "Great, let's go," Evie answered with a sincere smile, letting go as Caleb had. Turning towards the kitchen, she grabbed her coat and slipped her arms into the warm sleeves. As she moved through the kitchen towards the back deck, a clear bottle of amber liquid caught her attention. Could it possibly be a bad decision? Yes. Was she going to do it anyway? Also yes.

Evelyn wrapped her fingers around the neck of the bottle of whiskey, bringing it with them out onto the back deck. If nothing else, it could at least warm them up if they get too cold. Shutting the door behind her, she sat the bottle on the railing of the deck before pulling out her pack of cigarettes. Placing one between her pink lips, she lit it and inhaled the toxic smoke into her lungs. The burning sensation immediately sent a feeling of relaxation over her and smiled thoughtfully as she exhaled the smoke into the air above their heads. Turning her attention to Caleb, she teasingly rolled her eyes. The brunette stepped a bit closer to him, hiding the lit lighter behind an open hand to protect it from the light wind. Once his was lit, she put the lighter away and took another toke. "Even all these years later, you lose all your lighters," Evie said with a grin, reaching out for the bottle to take a sip. Holding it out to Caleb, she met his gaze and added, "It's good to know that some things haven't changed."

Wesley never really had a lot of crushes, both back in school and in his present life. Sure, he found certain people physically attractive. But, to him, a crush required some sort of emotional connection, a personality that he also felt attracted to. In some ways, he was lucky to have a serious girlfriend throughout the entirety of high school. By dating Ava, it saved him from having to live up to the 'popular attractive jock' or 'prince' archetype that was bestowed upon him. Though he did hit up every part to do his fair share of underage drinking, he didn't sleep around and get the fuck boy reputation like in all those teen drama shows and movies. And no one expected him to, because he was dating Ava. Maybe that was one of the reasons they lasted so long. She kept the expectations at bay, their parents wanted them together, and he did care about her. Just not in the way that a traditional relationship might dictate.

But Whitney? She had been a full-blown crush. And by the way he'd been feeling around her since their reunion, she still was. She was beautiful both on the inside and out. Sweet and smart, seeming to live the life she wanted from what he could tell. It was one of those things where one person just immediately connects with another. It doesn't always make sense to everyone, but it did to them. And that was all that mattered. Wes grinned down at the brunette in his arms, admiring the way she scrunched up her nose at his playful teasing. But that quickly turned to surprise at his following question. Yeah, that was the type of response he was trying to elicit, wanting to see that cute blush tinge her cheeks. But Wes couldn't help but think she was a bit more surprised than he would have expected. Did he say something wrong? Was the mixtape actually made for someone and he ruined the moment by asking?

A large part of Wesley hoped that the mixtape was made for him, that the connection he thought they had in high school had actually been reciprocated. Maybe there could have been something between them, though he would have felt like a total asshole for continuing to date her older sister through high school at that point. If he had only mustered up the courage then, they could have been together this whole time. Who knows where their relationship could be by now? Wesley shook those thoughts away, wanting to offer Whitney a way out of the question. But instead, she glanced back at him and finally said, "Are you calling me a cliche, Wes?" The brunette man chuckled and shook his head, blue eyes meeting hers. "Absolutely not. Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic," he answered with a shrug. Almost as soon as he said those words, the song changed over to something much more upbeat. Wes released Whitney, but only for a moment to grab her hand and spin her. "So what do you say, Whit? Want to keep dancing?"

Parker ( Desert_Blossom Desert_Blossom )

Feeling Parker’s arms wrapped around her in a way that Ava almost found loving, her mind brought her back in time. She could almost hear her usual heels click down the memory lane as for a moment, the living room of the cozy cabin dissolved and was replaced by balloons, glitter and cheap paper decorations of a winter wonderland that was the theme of her senior prom. She wasn’t wearing her thick woolen sweater and a warm pair of pants but her scarlet-red gown instead, a corsage of cherry blossoms was hugging her wrist and a plastic crown, embellished with rhinestones, rested on top of her head. And the pair of hands squeezing her waist belonged to her prom king. But when she looked up to meet his smile, it was not Wes’s elegant black hairstyle over a pair of those crystal blue eyes. Those eyes were piercing, seeing the deepest parts of her soul but the strands falling into them were light brown and beautifully messy. That kind of messy which lures you to run your fingers through them and see if they are as soft as they look.

It was stupid really, imagining her prom with a different result. Ava had no idea why she was torturing herself with the pictures of could-have-beens but she partially blamed Lorde. Singing about the royals was just inducing the ideas and Ava’s hands locked tighter around Parker’s neck as if by doing so, she could change the current arrangements. The whole room was soaked in the atmosphere which could almost be described as romantic. Staring at Cam and Jace, Ava knew there were more feelings untold under the surface, Caleb and Evie had sparkles for days, don’t ask her how she knew, she simply did, and Whit, her little sister, couldn’t hide from Ava’s knowing gaze. The older Jeffries had spent way too much time of her high school career playing a matchmaker for her infatuated friends and she knew the longing look if she saw one. “One more reason for me to wish things were different back then.” Ava said, looking back at Parker as he mentioned tutoring sessions.

For a moment, the two remained quiet and just danced. Truthfully, it gave Ava a sliver of time to ponder over her situation and she was trying to compose a sentence that was going to sound right to her when the stuffie question came. God, that stupid spur-of-a-moment name. Okay, she loved it, admittedly, it was adorable. But it was never meant to be public. Although, maybe since he got her that dog, Parker was allowed to know so Ava revealed her little secret. “Of course it does. He’s so soft and cuddly.” she laughed softly, shaking her head over the conversation turn. “You know, until the moment I put him in the memory box, he never left my bed. I guess he was guarding my sleep.” she smiled. “But I see you have something to say about that, I can read your face, Parker Pierce. Come on, get it out.” she then laughed, seeing it in his eyes there was merciless teasing coming her way. He could lay it on her, she could handle it.

As the last tones of the song echoed in the room, Parker asked about their next move and Ava took his hand, leading them back to the love seat she had occupied before. “We can take a break for a bit.” she said and as she sat down, she carelessly hit the back of her arm and the edge of the arm rest with a large blue bruise she was hiding under the sweater. Ava winced slightly, trying to mask it as fast as she could with a small cough and once she was seated, her legs came up under her. The reminder of what was under her clothes, the grim reality of her life, gave her another impulse to think. She hadn’t had too many shots that day, her mind was clear. Once again she had to think about Anna and her plan to bring them all back together. The letter in her back pocket burned her through the fabric of her pants and a part of her wanted to rip the envelope open to read. But not now. Not here. Her dark eyes looked up, finding Parker’s bright ones and honesty lit up her face. “Do you think Anna believed in second chances?” she asked in the safest way she was able to think of.

Cam ( apolla apolla )

Jace changed. It was only natural, everyone did. Looking at the group of his friends now, the change was very visible and not only in their visage. They all sported more mature features now, more defined, sharper. But the look in their eyes changed as well. There was a story in each pair of irises and not everyone was keen on telling it. A hint of sadness was hidden behind every smile they all gave and while Jace used to have a reputation of the rebel without a cause, he was not as dense as everyone considered him to be. The fact that he was quiet most of the time in class didn’t mean he wasn’t observant and that was something which remained one of his dominant traits even now. But yes, he changed as well and not only because there was someone else in his life that needed his protection now.

He and Cam talked things out and cleared a lot of misunderstandings between them. But the biggest secret Jace was hiding was still unspoken and there was no way he could imagine revealing it to her. Fear of losing her was too great and gripped his heart in an icy fist every time he thought about confessing his side job to her. He was a father now, how could he admit to Cameron that he was sleeping with cougars for great money? His client list contained a few rather prominent names and those ladies paid extra to buy his silence. Bartending was not the worst job out there but he wanted more for his son. More than he ever had. And to do so, he needed money. And now, he was way too deep in the business to just cut the ties and stop. No one knew. Not even Evie who was more to him than his own brothers. And no one could now. It was a cross Jace needed to carry alone, his hurdle to jump over. His secret to hide.

Trying to focus on more pleasant things, Jace took a few deep breaths and blinked the dark thoughts away. Cam’s face came into the line of his sight again and seeing those beautiful eyes, ones she only had for him, a sudden wave of calmness washed over him, making him aware that this woman belonged to him. She never said it, he never asked her to, there were no heartfelt pages-long poetic confessions. It was what they never said that counted and Jace could see it in her eyes. And he hoped beyond hope that he was reading her right because if he was wrong, if Cam didn’t feel what he did, then Jace Christiansen was truly lost and there was no hope for him in this world.

“The one at school was cheap anyway. You’d hate it.” he grinned and his strong arms gripped her small waist, pulling her flat to his large form. She was so tiny in his embrace, it was adorable. “Not even the spiked punch made it interesting.” he added and decided that was all he had to say about the whole Homecoming dance. There was no need to open old wounds. And the slow song was coming to an end anyway. “I kinda wish Ava put her prom crown in the memory box. I’d steal it for you.” he grinned and looked around the room only to see that two out of four couples were not dancing anymore. Ava and Parker sat on the couch and it looked awfully like cuddling and Evie with Caleb dipped. “Wanna keep dancing?” he asked when a faster song came on. “Or have a drink? Or…get out of here?” he smirked, moving a loose blonde strand from her face, wrapping it around his finger.

The day had already been a roller coaster of emotions for the small blonde, but it seemed the ride wasn't over yet. Her surprise at Jace holding the corsage out to her gave way to a look of pure adoration and joy when he slid it onto her wrist, wrapping his arms around her afterwards. She couldn't describe how she felt with his arms around her, but it was an incredible feeling. Being here with the people she'd drifted apart from in general felt amazing. Everyone was rebuilding connections, both old ones and creating new ones. She glanced around at the others, but her eyes went right back to Jace because she only had eyes for him. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she pressed her smaller body against his larger one, wanting to enjoy this moment forever.

She laughed when he called the old homecoming dance cheap, telling her she'd hate it. But really, would she have, if things had been different? If she'd gone... with him? That night had stuck with her for a long time, but she wanted nothing more than to let it go. Lacing her fingers together behind his neck, she let him lead them through the slow dance, smiling when he mentioned Ava's crown. "I don't need a crown to feel like a princess. Not when I'm with you." She told him softly, standing on her tiptoes to press a soft kiss to his cheek. Feeling a soft blush creep onto her cheeks, she smiled, hiding her face in his chest. Truthfully, she could have slow danced with him forever, but the song came to an end and she realized that half of them weren't dancing any longer.

Lifting her head to look up at him, she considered his question, feeling a shiver course through her body when he tucked some hair behind her ear. "I don't care what we do, as long as you don't leave me behind." There was so much vulnerability in that simple statement and in her eyes, but she couldn't help but be terrified that she was opening her heart to him only to have everything wrenched away again. Her father was no longer a factor, but there was so much else. Her hands moved to cup the sides of his neck, and she glanced over to the corsage for a moment. Sliding her hands down his chest, Cameron touched the flowers gently. "So... what'll it be?" She asked softly, looking back up at him. "Drink? Dancing? Or something else?" Wherever he went, she would follow.

Caleb Thompson

Dancing around the room with Evie while their friends did the same around them, Caleb could forget his guilt for a few minutes. He had alot to feel guilty for, from leaving his family, to leaving Evie, to taking his friends and family for granted. The list honestly stretched on longer than that, and the guilt had plagued him for a long time. But when he'd left, and even before that and after, he didn't feel as though he deserved these people. Especially not Evie, and especially not Anna. She'd been pretty close to an angel for being human, and Caleb couldn't imagine her now as anything other than a true angel. Watching over them from above, smiling down as she watched her magic work. None of them had wanted to refuse her final wishes, but none of them had expected this.

Back in the living room, Caleb had snickered when Evie told him not to ruin the moment. When she asked if he wanted to smoke, he happily agreed. Seeing the smile that blossomed on her face, Caleb followed after her almost like a lost puppy who'd just refound its owner. He raised a brow when he saw her grab the whiskey, but said nothing, just stepped outside onto the deck with her. He thankfully found his cigarettes, but the lighter was a no go. She rolled her eyes before she moved closer, holding up a hand to shield the flame as he leaned in as well to light his cigarette. He noticed that she didn't move away afterwards, and he tilted his head as she called him out on losing his lighters. "Some things never change indeed." He laughed, taking the bottle when she offered it.

"But then again... some things do." He tilted the bottle back, taking a hefty swig before he set it down on the railing. His eyes landed back on Evie, and the alcohol made him bolder. His arm lifted, wrapping around her waist and pulling her close. Taking a drag from his cigarette, he blew the smoke out of the corner of his mouth. "You might hit me for this... I just want you to know that if you do, I forgive you." And then he moved closer, pressing his lips to hers as he turned them, backing her against the railing, not far from the whiskey bottle. One arm tightened around her, while the other gripped both his cigarette and the railing on her other side. He lingered there for a few seconds before he pulled back, a little breathless. "We're living in the moment, right?" He asked her, a soft yet slightly nervous laugh leaving him.

Whitney Jeffries

The youngest Jeffries sister might have been the brightest in her class, but growing up she was often wanting for confidence. Something not helped by her parents’ constant push for her to be more like Ava in that regard. And while she’d overcome a lot of her insecurities since graduation, when it came to her feelings, that lack of confidence remained, evidenced by her flushed cheeks when Wes inquired about the mix CD. Luckily though, Wes was kind in his response and a small, appreciative smile tugged at her lips.

“I didn’t take you for the hopeless romantic type…” Whitney replied teasingly, echoing his words from earlier. “At least not the hopeless part. I don’t think that’s a word I’d ever use to describe you.” She clarified, not intending her initial comment as an insult. In truth though, Whitney was rather surprised by Wes’s characterization of himself because she never would have guessed it from watching his and Ava’s relationship. They’d been the picture perfect couple, but neither of them had been overtly romantic, at least not in public. Of course, there still was the chance that maybe Wes was just saying that to avoid admitting he was indeed calling her cliche… but part of her did hope the serious business man did have a romantic side beneath those tailored suits he wore.

Wes’s unexpected spin elicited laughter from Whitney and she did her best not to trip over her own feet as she turned. Her hand found his chest for balance as she came back to a looser hold, smiling brightly up at Wes. As much as she could get in her head and shy away from life, Whit adored how easily the handsome brunette could diffuse her anxieties. She’d felt in the hot seat just moments ago, but he hadn’t pushed or pried or teased any further like some might have. And that always made her feel so comfortable with him. But telling him that was how he made her feel was another case entirely.

Whitney let out a soft, pensive sigh as Wes inquired what she wanted to do, waging another mental war with herself. All the other couples had left the metaphoric dance floor, with Jace and Cam stepping away just moments ago. While the nerd would have danced with Wes forever if it meant remaining so close to him, she also knew what song would be coming on shortly if she let her CD continue to play. Five years ago, Whit had innocently added Anna’s favorite song to the mix, but after hearing it sung by Cameron at their friend’s funeral, the song and its lyrics had a more somber meaning now. The mood in the cabin had finally recovered from earlier, and Whitney didn’t want the sad song to cause her friends more pain.

“As much as I’d love to continue dancing, I think maybe we should stop while we’re ahead. By some miracle I haven’t broken either of your feet yet.” Whit joked at her own expense, lingering there with Wes for just a little longer to soak in the moment. She wanted to say something- anything really- to let him know how much even their simple dance meant to her… but with Ava and Parker on the couch not far away, the words continued to be elusive. And so Whit just offered a wistful smile before slipping away from Wes. She made her way over to the stereo, chewing her lip as she tried to find the correct buttons to stop and eject the CD. Soon the cabin fell quiet as the music stopped playing, and the brunette returned to the coffee table to put her CD back in its case. When she’d made her item all those years ago she definitely hadn’t imagined it being played for the group to bring everyone together. But she was glad that it did. Even if just for a few songs.

Shaking away her thoughts before Anna occupied too many of them, Whitney turned back to Wes. “Everyone seems to be a little occupied at the moment…” The brunette observed, tugging a little at her sweater sleeve. She glanced briefly to Ava and Parker, a bit worried about her sister doing something she might regret… but Whit also hadn’t seen Ava this happy in years. Who was she to take that away from her sister?

“I think I might take a walk…” She began, deciding that with all the couples escaping to their own niches of the cabin it was a safe way not to be an awkward third wheel or infringe on their moments. “… if you want to come?” Whit continued, her dark eyes finding Wes’s once more . “I mean… I’d like you to...” The brunette added, trying in her own clumsy way to put herself out there a little more. “Unless you’d rather do something else, that is. You could always crush me at pool or foosball if you’re still cold.” The brunette adding, realizing that maybe it was just her that was warm right now.

Parker Pierce

Life hadn’t always been fair to Parker Pierce, but then again it was rarely fair to anyone. The troubled home life that awaited him after a day of school or hockey practice could have led him down a similarly troubled path… but the class clown coped using humor and pranks to hide his problems behind the almost constant lopsided grin. He didn’t have a lot- his hockey gear was purchased from second hand stores, his clothes weren’t name brand, he never had a car, and any spending money he had was earned through odd jobs. However, Parker appreciated what he did have, or rather who he had- his group of friends. And while the girl of his dreams was in the arms of another man, his best friend no less, at least she was in arm’s reach. Back then, that was enough. Or at least as much as Parker’s fortune would allow him to hope for.

Now, Ava Jeffries was in his arms, but for a moment she looked a million miles away as they danced. The clown wondered what she was thinking about, but whatever it was, he wasn’t sure he should interrupt her. So instead, he just watched her, appreciating the subtle changes to Ava’s face the last five years gifted her. As the brunette came out of her reveries, her arms tightened around Parker’s neck and he smiled softly. “Welcome back to Earth…” He teased.

The pair danced a while longer, before the conversation turned back to her stuffie. “Oh I don’t know, I’ve learned to roast people pretty well on the mean streets of Hollywood.” Parker retorted when Ava said she could handle his teasing. A quirk of his grin promised that he had no intention of roasting her, though he did continue. “I dunno, I guess I figured you’d have come up with a more glamorous or iconic name. Like Clooney or Prada or Diamond. Snuffles is just… surprising coming from the “It Girl”.” He explained with a shrug. “It’s cute.” If Parker offended Ava with his answer, it wasn’t enough to prevent her from pulling him to the couch. And the clown was only too happy to follow like the puppy dog he was.

“You alright?” Parker queried, noticing her wince when she sat down. “Getting into fights with the couch, huh?” He joked, not realizing the darker story behind her pain. The clown took a seat beside Ava, resisting the urge to pull her even closer into his lap so they could lounge more comfortably. Instead he just angled his body in the corner so he could face her more, catching her chocolate gaze as she looked up at him. He raised an eyebrow, about to make some smart ass comment but her question cut him off. Do you think Anna believed in second chances? Parker’s eyebrow lowered, furrowing a bit as he considered the question.

“Anna?” He repeated, leaning back against the pillows and running a hand through his hair. The topic of their lost friend was dangerous, and something that made Parker off centered, but he indulged Ava, curious what she was getting at. “Yeah, I think she did. I mean she was Anna, she gave lots of people second, even third chances.” He replied, thinking back to Anna’s forgiving nature. “Is that what you mean?” Parker asked, cocking his head to the side a little as he studied the brunette. Had she done something wrong that she wondered if she’d have Anna’s forgiveness for?

“Or do you mean like do-overs?” The clown asked, recalling Ava’s earlier cryptic comments about the past and beginning to notice a pattern of nostalgia. “Ava… what did you mean before when you said you wished things were different, you know, back in school?” He asked, reflexively leaning in more towards the brunette as he waited for her answer. He didn’t know why, but it felt important.

"Honestly, I thought I was going to have to work a little harder for that," Caleb had said, those words ringing in Evie's head as they stood outside. It was an honest comment. After all, she hadn't been making things easier for him until that point. But, just because she went with her heart over her head at that moment, didn't mean that she would continue to do so, especially with less alcohol in her system. Unfortunately, she would start to overthink again, become cautious, and fall back into that begrudging mindset. Maybe, just maybe, however, it would be slightly reduced after their interaction. Because as hard as she tried, those old feelings were pushing their way back to the surface, threatening to bubble over every time she found herself looking into his eyes or caught a glimpse of his smirk. The connection between them was magnetic, and it would only be so long of her fighting it before she would inevitably have to give in. So, the brunette baker just thought, Not tonight, and continued with the night.

"Well, life wouldn't be exciting if everything was always the same," Evelyn agreed, taking another drag from her cigarette and exhaling into the air above their heads. Even without the smoke, however, the warmth of their breaths created soft clouds against the cold air. Maybe it was just the alcohol, but she could've sworn she felt his body heat seeping through her coat, and it felt nice. Either way, she wanted more of the whiskey. But before she could reach for it, she felt Caleb's arm wrap around her, pulling her even closer than she had been before. Evelyn looked up at him with eyes widened in a bit of surprise. "Hit you for-" she started to say but was cut off by the feeling of Caleb's lips pressed against her own. Immediately, her eyes slid closed and there were fireworks. She closed her eyes and pressed her body against his, craving his warmth. On instinct, one hand reached up to caress Caleb's cheek. Evie felt her back hit the railing, effectively pinning her. But she didn't care, not one bit.

The brunette baker could feel her heart begin to race, beating against her rib cage. It wasn't out of anxiety or fear. No, it was something brighter, something more positive, something good. Evie would have gladly stayed there forever, kissing Caleb. But all too soon, he pulled away, leaving her lips cold once again. She was slightly surprised to find herself disappointed that he was no longer kissing her. Wanting to immediately pull him back in. His heavy breathing matched hers as she looked up at him, lips still parted. It took her a moment to realize what he had said and Evelyn nodded, mirroring his nervous laugh with one of her own. "Yes, we're living in the moment," she agreed, taking a final drag from her cigarette before tossing it into the snow behind her. With her hands now free, she reached up to wrap her arms loosely around Caleb's neck. With whiskey in her veins fueling her courage, Evelyn leaned up on her toes and pressed her lips to his.

Was Wesley Frost truly a hopeless romantic? Maybe. Someone who continues to believe in love, no matter no matter what, choosing to see the good in romantic relationships regardless of the bad. That was the definition. On one hand, it was a beautiful thought, that love is greater than anything else in the world. But, that definition would require him to believe in love in the first place. And Wes wasn't sure if he did. Just look at his role models for what a "good" relationship was supposed to be. His parents barely saw one another except for publicity events they both had to attend or their annual vacation to some private tropical villa. Other than that, his mother spent most of her time in Europe at different fashion houses and his father was never in the same country for longer than a couple of weeks. Their marriage was built on money and image, which was exactly the same reason they wanted him and Ava to work out. It took them years after the two broke up to get over it and forgive him for ruining a family merge like that. If they barely loved each other or even their own son, how could love be real?

On the other hand, and despite all that, there still was a part of the brunette businessman that believed he could have the white-picket-fence, 2.5-kids kind of life someday. Though, that part of him was tucked so far into the recesses that he didn't acknowledge it. And it certainly helped that he kept himself busy leading not just one, but two major businesses, one of which was still quite brand new. Wes filled his life with work so that he didn't have to focus on the portions of his life where he felt like he was failing. Because, contrary to what those that knew him at the surface level might think, he did have goals outside of just work. So, when Whitney said that she didn't take him for the hopeless romantic type, he wasn't that surprised. Though, he did appreciate what she followed it up with. "Yeah," the brunette man said with a low chuckle, shrugging his shoulders, "I guess I don't let my romantic side out to play as much as I want. But maybe that'll change soon."

It was a harmless flirt, but a flirt nonetheless. Wes savored the sound of her sweet laughter as he spun her around, unconsciously returning her smile when she faced him once again. To him, it felt as if they were the only two people in the room. He barely noticed that Evelyn and Caleb had left for a smoke outside, or that Ava and Parker cuddled together on the couch, or that Cam and Jace were still upstairs. No, it was just the two of them in that living room, with the soft sounds of a crackling fire and nostalgic music filling the space. It was with her words that he saw Parker and Ava, and a smirk turned up the corners of his lips. While that situation was sure to get messy, Wes wanted his best bud to be happy. And by the looks of it, they both certainly were. "Yeah, a walk sounds nice," he responded, smirk turning into a smile as he turned his attention back to Whit. Pacing towards the front door, he slipped back into his shoes and coat, picking up hers along the way and holding it open for her to slip her arms into the sleeves. Once they were bundled up and ready, Wes opened the door and led the way back out into the winter wonderland, pausing at the bottom of the porch stairs to hold a hand out to Whitney. "I seem to remember there's a lake down the way, want to check it out?"

Parker ( Desert_Blossom Desert_Blossom )

Never before did Ava think about unfortunate stories. Loving the life of a one-percenter in her ivory tower and parents who gave her the world, it never really occurred to her how big and bad that world actually was. Newspapers offered all sorts of unfortunate endings, the TV produced even more of those but Ava always felt like only a spectator to all the bad luck befalling upon people. After all, she was a Jeffries, nothing could ever happen to her since mommy and daddy would never allow that. Her parents always protected both their daughters and raised them in a protective shell. However different those girls were, they both received only the best of the best and it all had taken such a deep root in Ava that when she finally ventured out of her little protective bubble, the world took her by the storm and she could barely stand on both feet.

“Prada was my mother’s dog.” Ava commented dryly. A prickly little thing her mom used to carry around in her purse. While Ava loved dogs, she was never really fond of that yapping chihuahua who only allowed Mrs Jeffries to touch her. Her cheeks colored pink when Parker told her it was cute and she stopped paying attention to her surroundings. Hence the collision with the couch. Forcing a smile to her lips, Ava just shrugged. “Yeah, it looks like a bitch. Too bad I’m a bigger one.” she laughed, trying to lead the attention toon away from her pain. From her unfortunate story she never even believed could ever happen to her. And to make sure the distraction was complete, she also popped the second chances question so they started talking about something else. She had her way with words, after all, she was a lawyer.

So focused on Parker, Ava never realized people left the living room. Her gaze was literally hanging on his lips as he spoke and she subconsciously moved closer. “I meant do-overs. You know like…us. All of us. She brought us here to become friends again. We used to be so close before and once the final bell rang, we all went our separate ways and never looked back. I think Anna knew more than well what she was doing by bringing us all back here. She had it all thought through. Just look at the others. Cam and Jace reliving their lost prom, Evie and Caleb reunited to work things out, my sister finally getting a fair chance with Wes…” Ava was nothing if not observant. People found her too self-centered, whether at school or even now. But she noticed things, she saw little looks, subtle touch here and there, longing gaze and glimmer in people’s eyes when staring at a loved one. It was their second day at the cabin but the lawyer already felt she understood Anna’s plan way better now.

And then it was Parker’s turn to drop his question which caused the air to hitch in her throat. Ava looked down at her left hand and her teeth sank into her bottom lip. Her ring was gone, the constant reminder or shackles on her wrists was not there anymore and the previous night, she was way too wasted to remember where she put that thing. But her mind was clear as ever, she was sober tonight and the living room was cleared out since every couple went their own way. Ever so slowly, Ava looked back up, staring straight into those deep blue pits Parker possessed. And she knew it was either now or never. Time stopped, the place was quiet and only the fireplace in the background made soft noises. And the empty ring finger gave her the courage she needed. “What I meant is that I was in love with you, Parker Pierce.” she said and the sentence felt deafening in the silence of the room. “I’ve always been in love with you. Even bef-“ she stopped for a brief second. “…before Wes. Before all that mess, before everything became too complicated. It’s always been you.” Her last words came out as whispers and her heart was hammering along her chest. The words were out there, she could not take them back. Maybe it was the reunion, maybe it was the cabin. And maybe Ava grew tired of being a Novak, carrying the name which brought her nothing but pain.

Cam ( apolla apolla )

Jace Christiansen was a lot of things but a romantic wasn’t one of them. Being raised by a father like his, it was almost a miracle he was fairly normal. His whole childhood, Jace struggled. He struggled with school, with family, with making friends, with money… His whole life was a huge struggle and an attempt to succeed. At least now he had a reason to try as hard as he could. Riley gave his life purpose and if he didn’t want to lose custody, he had to make sure the little guy had everything he needed. And even without the custody in question, Jace simply wanted his son to have a way better childhood than he had. And while people could blame Jace for being a douche, an asshole, a selfish bastard, no one could ever say he was a bad father.

And yet, he knew there was something still missing from the equation. Something to make both sides balanced. And when Cam accepted the corsage, when her small hands touched the back of his neck and her petite form pressed in his front, it all clicked. Jace could feel that the equation was now complete, that nothing else was missing from it. Cam was the last piece of the puzzle he needed and now that he had her, there was nothing else he needed in life. His dark secrets were not important anymore, he’d deal with those eventually. But not now, not when he received that long desired second chance with the one girl he ever truly wanted. Their previous night was magic and he now needed to seal the deal, hoping Cam was ready to do it as well. They both needed that. Let go of the baggage and just open up to all the feels.

Her lips left a burning buzzing sensation on his skin and she shook his head. “I don’t want you to be a princess if you can be the queen. My queen. If…if you want that.” he told her, his grip around her tightening. The song was not long enough for him to say everything he wanted, it ended way too soon for Jace’s liking but when he looked around, he noticed that everyone else went after their own agenda. Only Ava and Parker were left in the living room but they also looked like living in their own world. Who was Jace to judge? They were both adults and whatever happened between any couple, it would stay at the cabin if they wanted. “Come on.” he whispered to his girl and laced their fingers together. The music was over anyway and for the next part, Jace didn’t need any witnesses.

The two only made a short stop to grab their jackets before Jace led Cam outside through the back door. Last night, this place witnessed a fight but tonight, Jace was planning on fixing Cam’s memories of it. His fingers were still intertwined with hers as he led her to the railing. He had noticed something before and prayed it worked. “Give me a second.” he smirked and walked to the very corner of the railing where he fumbled with something for a bit. He flipped a switch and the railing lit up, millions of tiny Christmas lights coming to life, flooding the terrace with the advent atmosphere. “Thought you might like it.” Jace mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. It didn’t happen often for this boy to be frazzled but it seemed to be a frequency occurrence around a certain blonde. His gaze was diverted and he looked up. “The sky is really clear tonight. Reminds me of Riley a little. He likes to stare at the stars and make up stories and constellations.” Jace babbled, tucking his left hand deep into the pocket of his pants. “See that group of stars up there?” He asked, pointing at what he meant. “It’s his favorite one. He calls them a cinnamon roll. Though I do blame Evie for that one.”
