Something about being back on the mountains and at the cabin with the same group of friends she had in high school caused a wave of nostalgia to wash over Evelyn. Sure, they looked different than they had back then. A little older, maybe wiser. Jace certainly had more tattoos, as did she. Her hair was a little shorter, cut in an attempt to keep it out of her face at the bakery. Caleb's was too. Everyone had lost most of their baby face looks, instead growing a bit taller and filling into their bodies well. But, despite all that, despite all the things that had happened to them between graduation and that moment, they were still the same people. Evie was still the unsure, kind new girl trying to find where she fits in. Ava was still the It Girl, both in personality and in career. Wes had traded a hockey uniform for a suit but was still the natural leader he always was. Parker proved he could still make some great jokes, and his smile was contagious as always. Jace was the intimidating bad boy with a teddy bear heart and Cam was a sweetheart. Whitney, though seeming to have come out of her shell, still seemed to blush at the slightest flirt. And then there was Caleb.

Even though he had disappeared for all those years, his lopsided grin still had a way of setting her heart racing. Back then, he was the first person she told about anything, from something as mundane as a new book she read to when she created something new. He sold and did drugs, yeah. But she had never felt like someone understood her as much as Caleb did. Though she knew she could just pick up where they left off, she missed talking to him, wanted to be able to confide in him again like she used to. When he left, Evelyn wanted to help him get through whatever it was he found himself lost in. But when she couldn't find him or get ahold of him, she had turned to his family, anonymously helped them out. She still did. And it was because of that that Evie knew she still cared deeply for Caleb, even if a part of her wished she didn't.

Feeling him nudge her, the brunette baker dusted the snow from her pants, looking up as Caleb held out a hand to her. She took it, letting him help her to her feet. But he pulled a little too hard, and Evelyn nearly lost her balance. Instead, though, she found herself wrapped in Caleb's arms, chest to chest. She sucked in a breath in surprise, green eyes widening a bit in surprise. She looked up at him, her lips parted as he brushed some hairs from her face. Her heart began to race again, and the warmth of his body against hers made her forget that they were standing in the snowy cold at the base of a mountain. Nevertheless, she absentmindedly shivered, causing him to grin and press his forehead against hers. Her eyes slid closed, an unintentional smile of her own turning up the corners of her lips. "I do," she answered, her heart convincing her that she wanted to kiss him. And just as quickly, he was gone.

Evelyn opened her eyes, letting out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding and following the group back through the snow into the cabin. She stepped out of her boots and hung up her coat, shoving her gloves into one of its pockets. Slipping into the living room, she nodded at Cam. "I've got it," Evie said, stepping over to the fireplace and stacking a few dry logs in it like her father had taught her to do on their many family camping trips as a child. It wasn't long before the flames licked up the sides of the logs from the kindling beneath, immediately throwing a comfortable warmth into the rest of the room. Rubbing her chilled hands together, the brunette turned back to the rest of the room, now finding that Parker had returned with what appeared to be a gift, sitting it on the coffee table. If it came from Anna's parents, there was no telling what lie within. "Uh, sure," Evelyn said softly, kneeling on the floor beside the coffee table. Her hand slid across the paper, heart squeezing in her chest. Now or never.

It seemed that the others, except Parker and Ava who had yet to emerge from their hiding place, were all on board with Wesley's idea to head back down to the cabin. While the slopes had proven a fun, nostalgic game that brought them closer together, the temperature had certainly dropped and he was starting to feel the chill through his peacoat. Maybe he should have packed a bit better, preparing for actually being out in the snow. But alas, his wardrobe was far more formal than it had been in high school, made up largely of suits, button-up shirts, slacks, and dress shoes. Only on casual Fridays or to the gym would he even consider wearing jeans and t-shirts anymore. And so, he pulled himself out of the snow to his feet, dusting the stray snow from his clothes before helping Whitney to her feet as well. Grabbing his skis, he walked alongside her back down the path until they were safely and, more importantly, warmly back inside the cabin.

Once inside, he made sure to clear himself of his damp outerwear as the other did, leaving them to hopefully melt and dry in the cabin's sunroom. His friends had begun to choose their seats in the living room and he didn't want to lose his top choice of sitting alongside Whitney. But he had also mentioned drinks, and so that was probably what he should do first. Taking a moment to slip into the kitchen, the brunette man grabbed whatever bottles of liquor he could find as well as several shot glasses before returning to the living room. Setting his haul on the coffee table, Wes grinned at the rest of the group. "I guess we're having shots. If you want something more creative, you'll have to go grab your own mixers." He poured himself a shot of whiskey, quickly downing it to hopefully warm himself from the inside as the fire was warming him from the outside. Luckily for him, the seat alongside Whitney was still open. So, he quickly took it.

Parker appeared then, a gift-wrapped box in hand. He sat it on the table, a little out of breath as he explained what it was. Anna's parents? Why would they give them something? Had they known Anna was planning this trip? They must have, right? Whitney shook her head, obviously not wanting to deal directly with whatever lie beneath that paper. Wesley glanced over at her, reaching out to place an arm behind her on the back of the couch. "I'll leave that up to someone else," he agreed, knowing he would need far more shots before he could get through that. Evie, singled out by Parker, bravely took a seat in front of the box. The room seemed to get eerily quiet, all eyes on her as she carefully removed the paper. A plain shoebox lie beneath, and the tension in the air only got thicker. Wesley felt for Evie, staring directly at the inked words on the top of the box in Anna's handwriting. That couldn't be easy, especially since she was probably the last person to talk with Anna, as far as he knew anyway.

"It says 'Memory Box' on it," Evelyn murmured, a bit of uncertainty in her tone. She looked up at the rest of the group, silently questioning if she should open it. Leaning up a bit on her knees, she flipped open the top of the box to reveal its contents. And that was when Wesley realized what it was. "Oh wow! This is the memory box we put together with Anna back in high school! Do you guys remember that?" he said excitedly, leaning forward to peer inside. All of their items were there. But there was also a stack of envelopes, the top one inked with Ava's name in Anna's perfect cursive. He could only assume that there was one for each of them beneath it. "Are those... are those letters? From Anna?" The excitement that had just been had quickly disappeared, his heart clenching in his chest at the thought of what the words on those pages held. Evie met his gaze, nodding slowly. She picked up the letters, flipping through them. "It looks like there's one for each of us," she said softly, passing the envelopes to their addressees. Wes took his, but could only stare at it. No, he most certainly wasn't ready for this.

With her phone safely tucked away somewhere in the cabin, silent mode turned on, Ava never felt lighter. Her usual day was dressed in pencil dress, feet in the highest heels out there and possibly endless. Her phone usually went off several times an hour and Ava had to deal with everything Benjamin's company needed from the legal point of view. Ava knew she was a hell of a lawyer and could always stand her ground when needed but she was also painfully aware that she would never land a job in the Novak company without being married to the golden son. It was a dream job any young graduate wished for and Ava Jeffries was the lucky girl to score it. And it all sounded like she was set for life. As it turned out, it was also just another dream and now, her phone kept buzzing in her bag back at the cabin and Benjamin Novak was trying to get through to his wife. No success. His wife was way too busy laughing under the tree with her old (or not so old) flame.

The way Ava saw it, this was her one chance to escape her life, even if it was only for two weeks. Being around her high school friends was like being young and stupid all over again. She wished there was a way to turn back time and return to those days. Sure, she had made mistakes, some of them irreversible. But some of them, she really, truly yearned to fix. Just like the one standing in front of her. It was almost heartbreaking when Jace called out to them to join the rest of the group and Ava’s cheeks grew crimson red immediately, not from the cold weather. “Yeah, I guess we should…” she sighed and pointed at their friends. And yet, she would much rather turn into those popsicles with Parker here.

Only when they started walking again did Ava realize how cold she actually was. Not even her warm skiing clothes were keeping her warm at this point and when she finally walked inside the cabin, warmth enveloped her and for a moment, it even hurt as her frozen limbs started to thaw. Evie went to light up the fire in the fireplace and soon, delicious hotness flooded the cabin, radiating the smell of wood. For a moment, there was some sort of mayhem Ava missed a little as she went to change her wet clothes for something more comfortable and dry, covering her arms and neck with a large thick woolen turtleneck. When she reentered the living room, there was a box on the table and Parker explained it was a box Anna’s parents had given to him. Dreadful feeling washed over Ava as she moved to sit on the love seat and anxiously waited for someone to open the box. Once again, it was Evie who took the initiative and ripped the paper open to reveal their old memory box. A small smile graced Ava’s lips and memories flooded her head, showing pictures of the day they buried this little time capsule.

But then the box opened and surprisingly, it was not a mix of items they saw first but a bunch of letters. Wes handed her one of those with her name written on top and Ava’s stomach somersaulted. A part of her wanted to rip it open and read it but another part, a larger one, knew she was not ready just yet. She felt tears prick her eyes again and with all she had, she blinked them away, setting the letter aside for now. “Look at that, guys. Our stuff still looks like it was just yesterday.” she laughed softly and reached for her own little memory. Her fingers caressed the soft artificial fur of the small stuffed dog. She pulled him out and looked at Parker briefly. Maybe the others didn’t know, maybe they did. But this little toy was much more than a stuffie. It was a reminder of the moment when the IT girl truly fell for the class clown.

Hearing Cam comment on Ava and Parker being adorable, Jace just frowned and grumbled something incomprehensible. Well, he was definitely not judgemental but a part of him, the tiny little decent part, was just not excited about it. There was just something about the fact that a married woman was flirting with a guy. Nothing good could come out of this. Not that Jace was an angel, he too had his dark secret that no one here or anywhere was allowed to know. So he dropped it and just shrugged, calling out to those two doves to come or else they would stay here all alone. It was definitely time to return to the cabin, sit by the fire, enjoy a drink and maybe play some game or just talk about the old times, the new times and everything that was going on with everyone, simply catching up.

They all almost ran back to the cabin and welcomed the warmth inside as their frozen bodies trembled from the cold. Cam mentioned drinks and fire again and there were people already on it. Evie took care of the fire and Wes brought alcohol and a few shot glasses. “I’ll definitely take a few.” Jace raised his hand as he leaned closer to the fire, trying to warm his hands up a little bit. Only Parker’s exclamation caused him to straighten back up and he watched the clown run out of the room, stumbling to get something. “What’s that about?” he asked in confusion.

Parker returned after a while, carrying a small wrapped package which only confused Jace more. “Wait, we’re doing Christmas presents now?” he joked and went to take a seat on the couch. Parker then explained where the package came from and the joking mood slightly disappeared from Jace and he sank lower in his seat. No one was too keen on opening the package from Anna as if it was haunted. It felt like it was only yesterday that they all reunited in that church and now, the ghost of their friend emerged in the form of a mystery box. Evie finally decided to rip the bandaid off and opened the box, revealing its secret. Jace let out the breath he was unaware of holding and realized he was actually smiling. “Look at that.” he shook his hand.

Wes handed him a letter with his name in Anna’s handwriting on it and Jace gulped. “Doesn’t get any easier than this, huh?” he mumbled, dreading to open the envelope, knowing that whatever Anna felt he needed to know was going to hurt him. If for no other reason, then because she was never going to tell him in person. Jace was a tough guy. He could take punches left and right, never really cared and punched back. But this was way too much and he knew the living room full of people was not the place he wanted to read Anna’s last words to him. He tucked the envelope in the back pocket of his jeans and looked back inside the box. There it was, slightly dirty, not so shiny anymore but still there. The ring on a thin silver chain. He pulled it out and watched the little ring rotate and dance in circles. “Remember that one?” he grinned at Cam since the ring belonged to her. “I used to wear this all the time. Placing it in this box was literally the first time I took it off after putting it on. Fuck, I never thought I was going to see it again.”

Cameron Hale

Going out to the slopes had been a fantastic morning activity, but now Cameron was frozen to her bones and really wanted to just curl up on the couch to warm up. And if she could curl up with Jace, well, even better. Though the blonde still had some doubts in her mind, the longer she spent here with Jace and their other friends, the more those doubts seemed to lessen. Every time he looked at her, she felt those familiar butterflies, the ones she felt all those years ago. They'd never gone away-- faded, sure, just as most emotions do with time and distance. But now that she was back in the company of her favorite people, it was almost as though that time hadn't happened at all. Like it hadn't been years since they'd last done this, and their own lives hadn't taken over.

Once they all got back to the cabin, Evie started the fire at Cam's mention of it. Everyone was just starting to settle into the warmth of the building when Parker suddenly shot out of the room, seven pairs of eyes turning to follow the class clown until he disappeared. Caleb asked what he was on, and Cameron just grinned as she shook her head. After she'd peeled off her wet, frozen clothes, she headed for the couch to curl up like she'd daydreamed about outside. The others slowly followed suite, though it wasn't long before Parker reentered the room, a wrapped box in his hands. Cam lifted her head from the back of the couch, suddenly intrigued, though she felt like a knife stabbed her in the heart when he told the room what the box was and where he'd gotten it.

She lifted her gaze to Parker as he asked if there were any volunteers to open the box. Evie turned out to be the one to do so, and as the wrapping fell off, Cameron recognized what the box was just as Wes said it out loud. She remained where she was on the couch, her eyes glued to the box as the lid was removed. There was a neatly stacked stack of letters on top, and Cam recognized Anna's elegant handwriting on the top envelope. Somehow, one with matching handwriting-- only with her own name written on it-- ended up in her hands. She stared down at it, feeling almost as though if she looked up, Anna would be there. But she wasn't, and would never be again. Biting back tears, Cam glanced up when she heard Jace's voice. Her eyes zeroed in on the ring in his hands, her lips curling into a small smile when she recognized it.

"Wow." She breathed, feeling suddenly as though her reverie was broken. Leaning forward, she peered into the box, looking for what she'd put in there. Her grip tightened on her envelope when she saw the corsage from homecoming night. A sudden barrage of memories flooded her, along with emotions and even a tinge of nausea. She remembered exactly how she felt that night, feeling betrayed by the boy she'd fallen for so hard. "Oh, my god..." She reached for it, her fingers brushing against the petals of the flower. And then suddenly, she was crying, the tears falling silently from her eyes. "I just... I need a moment." She jumped from her seat on the couch, her vision blurring as she hurried towards the stairs, disappearing up them and stumbling into the room where she'd stayed with Jace the night before. She sank to her knees, clamping a hand over her mouth as she tried to fight the sobs.

Caleb Thompson

Caleb wasn't the only one shocked by Parker suddenly darting out of the room, but whatever reason he left for, Caleb knew he'd pop back up eventually. He shrugged out of his outer layer of clothes, dumping them on the pile by the door that Cameron had started. Wes disappeared into the kitchen, returning a few moments later with liquor and some glasses. "Oh, absolutely." Caleb hurried to help the guy, though the reasoning was also partly selfish, because he wanted some of that liquor to warm him up as well. He poured a shot for himself, then poured another, offering it out to anyone who wanted it. "Whew, that shit burns." He shuddered, though he was grinning as he settled back onto his heels by the table. "But in the best way possible."

Parker reappeared into the room, carrying some box with him. For some reason, as soon as Caleb saw it, the grin slipped from his face. Whatever it was, he didn't think he was going to like it. And he was right. His eyes flew to Parker when the clown told them what the box was, Caleb's lips thinning into a straight line. His fingers curled on the carpet, his heart suddenly slamming against his ribcage as the box was placed on the table not far from him. "I'm not... no." He shook his head at Parker's question, his eyes darting around to everyone else. Someone had to open it, but it certainly wasn't going to be Caleb. Thankfully, Evie bit that bullet for everyone, but seeing the familiar box still didn't make Caleb feel any better, especially when the lid was removed and he saw the letters.

When his was handed to him, he took it, but like the others didn't open it right away. There was something aggravatingly formal about the moment, and Caleb hated it. Though he wasn't necessarily the class clown like Parker, he wasn't the type to go for more serious moments like Wes. No, he lay somewhere in between them, but no matter the personality in the room, no one seemed to want to open their letter yet. The voices around Caleb faded away as he stared down at Anna's handwriting, his mouth suddenly going dry. The liquor lay heavy in his stomach, and for a moment he thought it might come back up. But he fought the urge, and the feeling passed. A sudden movement from the couch snapped him out of his trance, and when he looked up, Cam was disappearing up the stairs.

Taking a few seconds to look around at the others, Caleb then let his gaze fall back on the box. Leaning forward, he peered inside, seeing a folded up piece of paper underneath Cam's corsage. His face immediately grew hot, and he reached inside the box and snatched it up before anyone else could. Though it had been years and he'd forgotten exactly what the poem said, he remembered the jist of it, and he wasn't about to let anyone read it. Especially not Evie. Clearing his throat, he stuffed the paper into the pocket of his pants, quickly withdrawing his hand and folding it in his lap with his other one, pretending as though nothing had happened. "What else is in the box?" He leaned forward again, looking inside. He saw Evie's face in there, and shifting aside the corsage, saw his own as well. A grin appeared on his lips as he reached for the photos, lifting them up to show Evie. "Oh, shit. Remember these?"

Whitney Jeffries

The lingering bite of the cold was slowly losing its edge as Whitney tucked herself into the corner of one of the couches, and she watched while Evie made quick work of bringing a fire to life. The heat from the flames began to fill the family room with ease, earning an appreciative sigh from the brunette. "Thanks Evie..." She smiled, leaning forward just enough to extend her hands towards the hearth without losing her balance off the couch.

True to his suggestion of having some drinks, Wes soon appeared with an armful of bottles and a handful of shot glasses. Dark eyes watched as the class prince threw back a swallow of whiskey, before lighting up when he moved to take the place on the couch beside her. After last night, Whitney really shouldn't have been as surprised as she was that Wes would seek her company... And yet, the nerd's stomach still fluttered with a delicious excitement, which bordered on disbelief, each time. She'd worried at first that maybe last night was just a drunken accident on Wes's part, but things didn't feel awkward between them like she imagined they would be if that was the case. If anything, Whitney simply felt a new shyness around him that wasn't present in high school, but back then he was unavailable and now... Well, now it wasn't as easy to pretend her feelings for him didn't exist.

Caleb came over to take a shot as well, and the younger Jeffries sister shook her head when the stoner held out a glass to the rest of the group, politely declining. Yesterday was undoubtedly fun, but the nerd was still not the biggest drinker, especially when it came to straight shots of whiskey. Any further drinking was put on hold though when Parker recalled that Anna's parents had sent him with a gift from their late friend. While the clown had good intentions when he brought the box out, the presence of the wrapped gift had a sobering effect on the group.

Whitney chewed on her lower lip, trying to fight the wave of emotions that threatened to dampen her good mood and cheeks. Feeling the warmth of Wes's arm as he slid it behind her on the back of the couch, she leaned into him a little, seeking a solace she worried the gift wouldn't provide. Her worries, luckily, seemed misplaced though, and as Evie opened the gift, Wes was quick to realize that it was the memory box that the group of friends had buried before graduation. His excitement seemed to dispel some of the unease in the room... at least until he noticed the letters. Are those... are those letters? From Anna? The grip around Whit’s heart tightened as the excitement drained from Wes's face, and she reflexively placed a hand on his leg to offer some comfort.

The nerd received her letter after Wes's, the alphabetical order putting her last but, knowing her friend, not least. Anna always had a way of making Whitney feel special and seen, even when she felt invisible to everyone else. Trailing her fingers along the ink, Whitney smiled sadly. Whatever was written inside, were Anna's parting words- a priceless gift. While she wasn't afraid of what was written or of crying in front of others, after all Ava had always been the stronger one of the two, Whitney wanted to give the letter the reverence it deserved and decided to read it later in private rather than tear into it immediately.

Noticing how heavily the letter seemed to be weighing on Wes, Whit gave his leg a little squeeze. "It'll be okay..." She promised, unable to imagine that Anna would intentionally write anything to cause him pain. "There's no rush, read it when you're ready." She added with an understanding smile, before leaning forward to look at the memory box items with the others. Look at that, guys. Our stuff still looks like it was just yesterday. They each took turns retrieving their memories, with some excited to be reunited with the item in question, and others... Well, Cam's tears as she ran from the room were clear evidence that not all memories were happy ones. Jace was quick to follow the emotional blonde and the brunette was confident that he would be able to soothe Cameron in a way no one else could.

A small chuckle escaped Whit's lips before she could stifle it when she spied Caleb quickly snatching a paper from the box and hiding it in his pocket, but she refrained from calling him out for it. Instead, she just reached in and took her own memory from the box- a mix CD she'd curated of her favorite songs from high school. She turned the case over, reading the handwritten names of the songs on the back cover. Whitney'd like to think her taste in music had improved over the last five years, but the sense of nostalgia that filled her when she recalled listening to all these songs with Anna and the others, made her believe otherwise. Her smile faded seeing "If I Die Young" on the list, before being completely replaced by an embarrassed expression when she got to song #11.

Turning the CD back over to hide the song list, she looked around at the others to see what else had been buried in the time capsule. Ava was holding a stuffed dog that Whitney recognized, though didn't recall the origin of, Parker was tossing a puck up in the air as he grinned reminiscently, and Caleb was holding onto a strip of photos that had been tucked into Evie's book. "What did you put in?" She asked, glancing back over at Wes curiously.

Parker Pierce

Well fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck! Parker was mentally kicking himself as he looked around the room at the crestfallen faces of his friends. He'd really killed the fun mood from their adventure on the mountain, and now the room was thick with emotion as the letters from Anna were handed out. Tears were forming in some of the girls' eyes and even Wes and Jace were visibly affected by whatever they imagined was written inside their respective envelopes. Parker ran a hand through his hair and sighed, looking down at his own letter from Anna. His lips turned up into the inappropriate smile that found its way onto his face during the most somber of moments. He wasn't good with negative feelings or circumstances, and true to the song by the Barenaked Ladies, he was the kind of guy to laugh at a funeral. Did that make him a terrible person? Probably.

The clown just felt so fucking awkward, like he was crawling in his own skin. He covered his mouth with his hand, feigning contemplation, when in reality he was trying to supress the uncomfortable laughter that threatened to escape. He couldn't even look at Anna's letter anymore right now out of fear that grief would only make things worse for him. Just when Parker thought he was going to have to excuse himself to have a manic breakdown in the safety of one of the back rooms, someone made the first move to start going through the box of memories and the mood in the room shifted.

For a couple minutes, Parker remained as he was- his hand firmly over his mouth still as he watched his friends pull out their items. Only when Cameron saw her corsage and began to cry as she made her escape, did Parker finally move. Feeling responsible for this sudden onslaught of depressing memories, the clown rose reflexively to try and comfort the blonde, but she just passed him without noticing. Letting his shoulders slump a little, Parker glanced at Jace as the tatted man followed after Cam, offering a sheepish smile of apology. Anna's parents really should have entrusted the gift with someone with better timing.

Since he was already up, Parker made his way over to the whiskey and poured himself a generous shot, quickly tossing it back. Maybe if he drank enough booze he could conjure up a time machine and stop himself from bringing out the box. Just as he was about to pour a second shot, a light giggle escaped from Whitney, and Parker took that as a promising. He set the bottle back down, deciding he’d hold off a little longer before testing out his time machine theory.

Rather than returning to his spot on the floor, he stepped over to Ava, glancing down as she pulled a stuffed dog from the memory box. "I didn't take you for someone who slept with a stuffie..." He teased, taking a seat beside her. Though, the more he stared at the dog, the more it looked familiar. Actually, it kinda looked like the dog that he won Ava at the fair... Wait!

Glancing back up from the dog to meet Ava's gaze, Parker's eyes widened in surprise. "Is that..." He began, unable to finish his question out of fear that it was too ridiculous to believe. Out of all the items the It Girl could have chosen to bury as her memory, she'd chosen a toy he'd won for her? Parker's stomach did a somersault, which wasn't helped by the whiskey he'd just added to the mix. "Huh..." He breathed, unable to say anything else at the moment as he grinned like a school boy.

Finally realizing that he had his own item in the box, Parker reached in and grabbed the hockey puck he'd cherished throughout high school. It'd been the one he'd made the winning goal with during a shoot out... but even more than that, it was from the night that he decided Ava was his good luck charm. He could still see her sitting in the stands beside Whit, cheering him on. Though, in reality she was probably just cheering for the team in general, but the clown liked to believe it was specially for him. Grinning even wider, Parker threw the puck up into the air a few times, getting lost in the reverie.

nine lives

Though she wasn't sure she was ready to open that box, Evelyn pushed forward because her friends needed her to. She pretended as though it was just some package she had gotten in the mail, baking supplies or something, and most certainly not the final gift Anna had left for them. But the shoebox within was most certainly not what she had been expecting. A memory box? When did they ever make a memory box? As soon as the lid was removed and the contents revealed, Wesley knew exactly where it was from, and the memory came rushing back to her like a ton of bricks. Each of them had put an item in it, something they thought would be buried for much longer. But Anna's item was something she had forgotten, a stack of envelopes, each addressed to one of the group. She nodded at Wes' question, passing them out to everyone in the room. No one seemed to want to open theirs right away and instead took to the items preserved within the box.

Cam's corsage from prom night caught Evie's eyes just as the blonde reached for it, and her heart fell into her stomach. That night. What was supposed to be one of the best nights of their lives ended up complicated and confusing and sad. She couldn't help but feel slightly responsible as Cam got up and ran out of the room, her heart thudding in her chest. Sure, her time with Jace had been an alcohol-induced hazed when she first got to town and they both knew the next morning that it wouldn't amount to anything. Hell, she was new in town and not even sure she wanted anything romantic at that time. But it had led to her argument with Caleb, and a disconnect between Cam and Jace, despite being months later at prom. The blonde probably needed someone to comfort her, but Evie knew she wouldn't be the best person to do so. Her green eyes instead found Jace's and she nodded in his direction, hoping he'd take the hint and go after Cam.

Peering back into the box, Evelyn barely caught Caleb retracting his hand, a piece of paper folded between his fingers. She wasn't sure what it was, but it was clear that he didn't want anyone to see it. So, she let it go for now. He reached back in as the brunette peered in too, finding her face staring back at her. Beneath the strip of photobooth photos was a tattered copy of Anna Karenina, her favorite novel. "Oh yeah, the carnival," she grinned, setting the book in her lap as she leaned towards him to look down at the photos. For a moment, Evelyn couldn't quite remember why she put them in the memory box. And then it hit her: that day was the day she realized that she liked Caleb as more than a friend, that she had more than just platonic feelings. And that sent her heart racing.

It was the weekend, and Evelyn was sitting at home alone, reading that same copy of Anna Karenina. She remembered Caleb showing up at her house, practically annoying her into going to the cheesy fundraiser carnival that the town was holding in a way that was cute and endearing. Accidentally bringing the book with her, she remembered explaining the whole plot to Caleb and answering all his questions. Somehow they ended in that photobooth together. At the time, it seemed so innocent and fun. But by the end, Evie saw Caleb in a different light. She was in love with him then, and she finally understood that. But now, several years later, did she still feel the same? Deep down somewhere, the brunette baker knew that she did, even if she was back at not wanting to admit it. Glancing at the dark-haired man beside her though, Evelyn found herself leaning into him with a smile. "That was a really good day."

The envelope felt leaden in his hands, weighing down not only his physical form but his mental as well. His stormy blue eyes scanned over the curled letters inked into the outside, reading his name over and over again in Anna's perfect handwriting. There were a million things she could have written on the paper inside, little sayings and pieces of advice she had given him over the years. Spend more time with the people he cared about and focus less on the game or the job. Take some time for himself, relax and have fun rather than waste his life away at the office. Climbing the corporate ladder wasn't the only thing that mattered in life. For someone so young, she was quite profound, almost as though she was from a different time and place sent to bring them together and teach them things about life they wouldn't otherwise learn.

Deciding it better to leave the letter a mystery for a while, Wesley turned his attention back to his friends, watching as they each peered into the memory box in search of their item. Ava pulled out a stuffed dog, and the brunette man couldn't help but wonder where it came from. The older Jeffries sister was strong-willed, composed, and poised on the outside. She had always seemed mature for her age, an old soul even. So a stuffed animal was largely out of character for her. That and, in all the time they had dated, he had never seen a single stuffie or toy anywhere in her room. But, it wasn't any of his business, and so he decided not to comment. Jace pulled out a ring on a chain, grinning at Cam. And then Cam saw something that made her start to cry. Wes wasn't sure what it had been, and before he could find out, she ran from the room.

Wesley had half a mind to chase after his cousin. But the tattooed man alongside her did instead. His blue eyes followed Jace as he left, narrowing slightly. Despite the fun they all seemed to be having on this trip, he was still rather wary of the token bad boy. Wes had heard the rumors throughout the years, seen the flying fists and bruised faces when someone got on his bad side. To the businessman, Jace seemed like a lit fuse, a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. And if they were together, it would only be so long until he took that out on Cam. But, this was an emotional moment for everyone and he didn't feel like making things worse by instigating an argument. Turning his attention back to the memory box, he saw Caleb and Evie looking over a set of photos. He felt Whitney's hand on his leg, and he placed his hand on top of hers.

"Thanks," Wesley murmured, offering her a small grin. It was softer, more sincere than the traditional charming smile he used at work. He didn't feel like he had to fake things with Whitney, that she understood him and didn't care about the so-called image he upheld. Whitney pulled out her item from the box, what appeared to be a mixtape CD with handwritten information on it. Wes found himself peering over her shoulder to read the song titles, but only got a few in before she flipped the case back over. With Parker removing his puck from the box, it was the businessman's turn to finally reach inside. What he removed might look like a simple stack of papers, but to him, it was so much more. "It's a math test," Wes said, answering Whitney, "The first time I ever received an A in that godforsaken subject. Though not without a little bit of help."

The box on the table brought a lot of things back. Ava felt the letter burning her skin through any piece of clothing and her fingers itched to rip the envelope open to reveal the last words Anna wanted to tell her. Back in high school, there were not many people who told Ava Jeffries what to do and lived to tell about it. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Ava was not the girl who would let anyone dictate what to do or how to live her life or what decision to make. She lived by her own rules and the world applauded. Most of the time, at least. But with Anna, it was as if someone waved a magic wand over Ava’s head and suddenly, she listened. The soothing tone, melodious voice and the gentle touch of Anna’s hand always caused Ava to shut up and listen. After all, Anna was the only person in the world to know that… well, the only person Ava told her biggest secret and the greatest shame in one.

Thinking back, tears stung in Ava’s eyes and she blinked a few times to get rid of them. It was right when Cam ran out of the room and Ava sighed in relief quietly that no one noticed her own struggle. In a way, she understood Cam. After the day filled with fun, this was yet another heavy moment which burdened everyone’s feelings. Emotions were pouring out of the shoebox and only when she placed her own memory item in her lap, the former IT girl finally found her little moment of peace. The stuffed dog was some sort of a token for Ava and it flooded her with yet another salve of feelings. Although this time it was a way different set. Thankfully, Parker brought a bottle of whiskey closer and Ava reached for it, pouring herself a shot. It disappeared in her within seconds and she shamelessly poured herself another one.

"I didn't take you for someone who slept with a stuffie..." Parker’s words brought her out of her reverie and she looked at the boy who was about to join her side. A small smile curled her lips and she reached for a loose strand of dark hair, tucking it behind her ear. Her eyes found the two plastic buttons of the plushie and she stared for a moment. “He meant a lot to me then.” she spoke quietly, caressing the soft fur. “I mean…he still does.” she added and lifted her gaze to meet the blue pair of eyes next to her. She honestly felt like a schoolgirl. There were people around her, Cam was crying somewhere, Jace was chasing her, four more people were sitting around and reaching for their own items and yet, Ava was her true self once again. Selfish and only interested in her own thing. But was it really selfish to try and earn a little happy moment for herself? She couldn’t get enough of the delicious feeling of her heart fluttering whenever Parker stared at her face and she simply had to know. Was it just her tired and hurt mind or was the unspoken truth from high school trying to come up to the surface. If for nothing else, Ava needed to know to find her peace. Whether it was in solitude with a bottle of wine and dreams of the future that was never going to be hers or… Or wherever those dreamy blue eyes would take her.

In comparison to the morning, the living room scene was just another page from the book of grim and gloomy. Somehow, Jace was hoping that with the casket disappearing under the ground with quite a few roses thrown on top of it, the sad part of saying good bye to their friend was over. They all came here to remember the best part, to reconnect, to renew the circle of trust they used to share and to remind each other why they should not make the same mistake again and just leave, never to contact anyone again. Jace was aware there were things he himself could have done better. The only person he knew about from the old group was Evie, simply because she stayed in town and ran her business. Ever since that one night they shared, the night they realized that they were less than a good match for anything else except friends, the two hung out and developed this sibling-like relationship, enough for Jace’s son to consider Evie his auntie. But how about the others? Jace was never particularly friendly with Wes or Ava but how about Parker? Or Caleb? And most of all, why did he never contact Cam?

Yet, none of it mattered anymore because here they were, almost the whole gang back together. Anna simply knew how to make things happen. And yet, the smiles from the slope disappeared and were replaced by all sorts of expressions. Some were sad, some were melancholic. His own was filled with remorse and regret and his eyes couldn’t stop watching the little shiny piece on a thin silver chain. One of Cam’s rings that he used to wear under his shirt. Back then, the resident bad boy would never admit so but it was this little piece which kept him out of trouble. It was some sort of a symbol of Cam and how he felt about her. Even after the shit went down and his father sent him away, Jace couldn’t give it up and while he and Cam never really worked out before, he still carried her ring around and created a little lucky charm out of it. The memory item caused a little smile tug on his lips and Jace got lost in his thoughts only to be brought back to reality by Cam’s reaction. She ran out of that room so fast he could barely realize the gravity of the situation.

Jace’s jaw dropped a little and he looked around to see how the others reacted. Parker stood up abruptly and for a moment, Jace thought he would follow but then his gaze met Evie’s. With a simple nod, she told him more than with a thousand words and Jace shut his mouth and stood up, hurrying after the fragile blonde. Taking stairs two by one stride, he found her in the room where they had spent their night in each other’s embrace and entered, knocking awkwardly on the door. Jace was not good at comforting people. He was a big grunt who could punch ten mother fuckers before offering the words of consolation but he also knew he had to try. Kneeling down, his large palm landed on Cam’s shoulders and he bit the inside of his cheek when seeing the sobs which were tearing through her body. “Wanna…erm, wanna talk about what happened?” he mumbled, offering her a soft squeeze. “I mean…we don’t have to but if you want to, we totally can, you know.” he added, kicking himself mentally for being a babbling fool.

Cameron Hale

Memories could be both wonderful and a very destructive thing at the same time. At first, everyone was hesitant to come back together, but they did because they all wanted to fulfil Anna's last wish. From meeting up at the parking lot and piling into the van to reliving their younger days on the slopes, the eight former friends had slowly but surely started connecting again. But all of the laughter and good times came to a screeching halt when Parker brought the memory box down and they started going through them. At some point, Anna had opened the box, neatly adding in a stack of letters, one addressed to each of them. Underneath of those letters were the memory items they'd each placed in the box. Everyone seemed to have a different reaction to what they saw.

Cameron's eyes flicked over to Jace as he lifted the shiny ring out of the box, a smile gracing her lips as it caught the light. She could hardly believe that he'd been so willing to wear it back then, but it had always secretly made her happy. Seeing it now, that same flush filled her body, and she grew curious as to what she'd put in the box. It had been five years, after all. But as soon as she saw the corsage, the memories slammed into her and she felt like she couldn't breathe. Unable to see the others through the tears that were threatening to fall, she whispered that she needed a minute and fled the room. Her feet padded the floor as she escaped up the stairs, collapsing in the room she'd shared with Jace the night before. That suddenly seemed like a lifetime ago, and try as she might, she couldn't grasp those memories and bring them to the forefront.

Instead, all she could see in her mind's eye was prom night. That stupid collage that she'd placed in the box, because she'd wanted to remember prom night forever. Jace had finally asked her to go, and she was ecstatic. But then the truth had come to light, about how Jace had slept with Evie at homecoming. Cam's whole world shattered when she found out, her insecurities and self doubt taking over every second, every thought. It was something she hadn't been able to let go of, and even now, those feelings were returning. Her chest grew tight, her breathing shallow. Dark spots crept in at the edge of her vision, and she could barely hear Jace's pounding footsteps coming after her through the blood rushing in her ears. He knocked, but she didn't turn towards him.

But suddenly his hand landed on her shoulders and she jerked, her head whipping in his direction. Seeing him brought a wave of fresh tears to her eyes, but she tried to calm herself in order to listen to his words. "You... wanna talk about then?" She whispered, a hurt look crossing her face again. She already knew that her father had been the one to stop Jace from coming that night, thanks to Jace's reveal the night before. She sniffled then, dropping her gaze to the floor. The black spots had mostly cleared, but her breathing was still uneven. Still, she leaned against his larger body, unable to stop a sob from escaping her. "I miss Anna." She whispered. "But even if she were here, Jace, she couldn't fix how I feel." Feeling utterly broken, Cameron just buried her face in Jace's chest. There was just so much she hid from the others, from Jace, and she didn't know how to face them.

Caleb Thompson

Although Caleb wasn't on the verge of hysterical laughter like Parker was, that didn't make him able to deal with the negative repercussions of the memory box in any better fashion. Caleb wasn't the type to deal with his emotions that well, and especially not those of other people. His eyes had darted to Cameron as she fled from the room, obviously upset, but he made no move to go after her. He loved the blonde girl as a sister, but what the hell was he supposed to do for her? Pat her on the shoulder with a broom and say there, there? Yeah, even that was a little more difficult for Caleb. No matter how much he cared for someone, dealing with emotions made things awkward, and he usually fucked it up somehow. Just look at how things ended with Evie, and the fight with Jace the night before.

Thankfully, the pictures he found in the box distracted him from those thoughts. He grinned as he peered down at them, showing them to Evie a moment later. No one had seemed to notice him slip his pathetic poem into his pocket, and he planned to destroy it as soon as he could. What did you put in the box, Caleb? Well, he'd figure that out later. For now, he glanced up at Evie as she looked over to see what he had, watching as she looked up from her book to see. A grin appeared on her own face and Caleb felt his body relax some, though it tensed slightly when she leaned into him. He held his breath, hardly daring to believe this was actually happening. Sure, she wasn't leaning in to kiss him or anything, but she was voluntarily closing the distance between them. Was that progress?

"It was." He agreed, his voice soft. "Even if you didn't want to go. And who brings a book to a carnival?" He scoffed playfully, shaking his head as he set the pictures back on the table. Looking up at the others, he noted that Cameron and Jace were still absent, but the others were still in the room. Ava held onto a stuffed dog, Parker was tossing a hockey puck in the air and catching it, Wes was bragging about his math test, and Whitney held onto a CD. "Is that what I think it is?" He asked suddenly, shifting to a standing position. Without warning, he plucked the CD from Whitney's hands, flipping it over to check out the hand written list on the back. "Hell yeah, Whit. You put in a mixed CD? Who even makes those anymore?" Looking up, he spotted a stereo system on the other side of the room.

"We're going to listen." He informed the others, crossing the room and popping the CD from it's case. Humming under his breath, he set it on the track and closed the little door, watching through the tiny window as the CD started spinning. Music filled the room, and Caleb turned around, holding his hands out towards the others. "Come on, ladies, gents, and Parker. Who wants to dance?" His eyes settled on Evie, and he started towards her, holding out his hand in her direction. "Come on, you didn't want to go to the carnival with me, and I know you're probably not gonna wanna dance with me, but I didn't take no for an answer then and I'm not doing it now. So stand up and take my hand." He grinned down at her, his hand held out expectantly in her direction. "Or else you might just break my heart."

Whitney Jeffries

Often finding herself on the outside looking in during high school, Whitney had more time than most to observe her friends. While she was nowhere near as perceptive or intuitive as Anna, who always seemed to know everyone's true feelings, the nerd had noticed the variety of smiles each person used in different situations. There were of course the genuine ones when they were all having fun and hanging out, and then there were the ones that were more for show than anything. The ones meant to hide truths that were easier to ignore, or the ones put on for parents whose expectations never quite aligned with the desires of their children. Whitney herself was guilty of hiding behind her shy smile, pretending that she was perfectly content with how her life shook out.

When Wes smiled at her though, she never really thought about what kind of smile it might be. It always made her feel warm and seen, and so she never questioned it’s genuineness. The atmosphere had been heavy since Parker had brought out the box, but Whitney felt lighter when the blue eyed man next to her added his hand on top of hers with a simple thanks. Following suit with the others, Whit pulled out her own item from the memory box- a mix CD- before asking Wes what he'd put in.

Imagining that he might have added something from his hockey days like Parker, or maybe something from his and Ava's relationship, Whitney was rather surprised when he pulled out a math test. For someone who reigned as the school's prince and star athlete, discovering his memory had been something academic related was a bit of a curve ball. Not that Whitney didn't view him as intelligent, far from it, but he just had so many other things going for him...

"I thought you hated math..." The brunette mused with a confused laugh, before glancing down at the grade on top of his exam when Wes pointed out that it was the first one he'd received an A on. Her laughter softened though as her gaze lowered further to the subject matter of the test and she recognized the problems as ones she'd helped Wes study for. Even as a nerd, calculus hadn't been Whit's favorite subject, but tutoring Wes had endeared the subject to her more. Tuesdays and Thursdays became her favorite days of the week because she got to hang out with the Prince, usually without Ava who had a social life to attend to. Though the younger Jeffries sister had never dreamed of acting on any of her feelings, guilty enough for crushing on Ava's boyfriend to begin with, she liked being able to be more herself around Wes when she wasn't the awkward third wheel.

Dark eyes met blue ones once more, and Whitney smiled, scrunching her nose a little. "I'm pretty sure we killed an entire extra large pizza and a carton of ice cream studying for this test..." She teased, recalling the night fondly. "Though, if we hadn't taken so many snack breaks, it probably wouldn't have taken so long." Whitney hadn't realized at the time how important acing math had been to Wes, but it made her happy to know she'd had a hand in his memory. Before she could relish in the moment any longer though, Caleb's voice from across the room caught her attention.

Is that what I think it is? Turning, Whitney saw Caleb beelining over to her and could do nothing but blink sheepishly when he plucked the CD from her hands. Hell yeah, Whit. You put in a mixed CD? Who even makes those anymore? The brunette knew Caleb didn't mean that as an insult, but she still turned a little red. "I don't know about anymore... but five years ago it didn't seem that weird..." Whit's mouth parted slightly in protest when the stoner announced they were going to listen, and she jumped up from the couch quickly, almost falling over when her legs got tangled beneath her. "We really don't have to..." She urged to no avail, watching Caleb hit play as he suggested they dance.

The song "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis filled the cabin, and Whit just watched as the stoner beckoned Evie to dance with him. Parker even chimed in, trying to help his pal's cause, before turning his attention to Ava as he pulled her up to dance with him. The mood in the room was suddenly much happier than it had been minutes earlier, and the younger Jeffries girl couldn't help but laugh as the class clown nearly sent her sister flying after spinning her clumsily. Maybe playing her CD wasn't the end of the world after all?

~Can we go back? This is the moment. Tonight is the night…~

Taking advice from the song lyrics, Whitney turned to Wes, holding her hand out to him hopefully. She didn't have any liquid courage this time around, but when had she needed booze to have fun with the handsome brunette before? "Will you dance with me?"

Parker Pierce

Sure, Parker had seriously misjudged the timing of bringing out Anna's gift... but it would have had to be done at some point, and at least now they were hopefully passed the worst of it. After seeing that Ava kept the stuffed dog he'd won her at a carnival, and being reunited with his game winning puck, the class clown was starting to feel better at least. The others, save for Cam and Jace who were still absent, looked to be lightening up a bit too. Or, maybe that was just his shot of whiskey talking. Either way, Parker chose to ride this wave of improved mood as long as he could.

He meant a lot to me then... Ava's soft voice brought Parker's blue eyes back to her, distracting him enough to make him miss catching the tossed puck. It thumped to the ground, bouncing a little, before rolling on its side until it disappeared under the couch. Out of sight, out of mind. I mean, he still does. Ava's gaze met his, and Parker grinned goofily, rubbing the back of his head a little. "Did you give him a name?" He inquired curiously, the more serious questions he could ask getting lost thanks to the booze.

He remembered the day at the carnival. Well, he remembered the important stuff from that day. Details had never been his best friend, but he could still bring back flashes of his and Ava's non-date-carnival-date to mind, and knew how he felt then. How he still felt, as hopeless as that made him. Wes had been running late for some reason, and Parker had gladly volunteered to keep the pretty brunette company until the prince arrived. The pair had just talked and laughed as they rode a few rides and played a few of the games. Ava had taken a liking to the stuffed dog, and though it had taken a few attempts, Parker finally managed to win it for her. It had been one of the best days of his high school life, and apparently it had left an impression on Ava as well.

An opportunity for a little fun presented itself when Caleb noticed that Whitney's memory was a mix CD and decided to pop it into the cd player. Parker flinched a little when the younger girl nearly took a dive trying to stop the stoner, but she saved herself in lieu of grabbing the CD back. "Your taste in music can't be that bad, Whit..." Parker laughed, noticing her reluctance. "Play that funky music white boy~" The clown sang off-key, pointing over to Caleb with both hands just as he hit play and the CD started spinning.

Come on ladies, gents and Parker. Who wants to dance? The clown laughed at Caleb's jab, leaning over to Ava to whisper, "He knows I'm a god and can't be categorized with the rest of you mere mortals..." He joked, giving her a wink. The stoner turned his attention to Evie, and Parker glanced over with interest. The two had been thick as thieves back in high school, but it seemed like Caleb was having to work to get back to that relationship with the brunette baker. Even going as far as saying she'd break his heart if she didn't dance with him. Parker wasn't sure if he was supposed to overhear that little tidbit, but he couldn't help but chime in.

"I don't think we can handle anymore heartbreak today Eves," Parker called over. "Besides, how can you say no to that cutie?" He grinned. Glancing over at Ava he shrugged a little. "Should we show 'em how it's done?" He asked, not really waiting for an answer before he hopped up and grabbed Ava's hand. Pulling her over away from the couch to the open area of the room, Parker began moving to the upbeat song with an abandonment helped along by the whiskey. "Let's see your moves girl..." He smiled at Ava, using the hand he still held to spin the brunette around. Unfortunately, he lost his balance a little mid twirl and nearly sent the It Girl flying. Desperate not to hurt his crush, Parker quickly reached out with his other hand to catch her free one and pulled her back in towards him.

Stumbling a little with her, Parker squeezed her hands tightly until they regained balance. "Okay, so I have two left feet..." He said apologetically, glancing down at her. "I feel like you were always better at leading anyways..." A little leery of any big movements now, Parker continued to hold both Ava's hands as he swayed to the music... until hearing the lyric about throwing hands up, and he brought both of their hands up to the ceiling, effectively making Ava step closer to him. Oops!

The nostalgia rushing through her body was like a drug, relaxing Evelyn into a moment that had previously been fairly sad. She caught Jace going after Cameron from the corner of her eye, and felt a bit of relief. Sometimes, she was a bit annoyed that something that happened shortly after she moved to town and before she knew anyone still caused such turmoil. But, she also understood it. Jace and Cam always seemed to have hearts for one another and, if it had been their choice, Evie knew they probably would have ended up together a long time ago. She couldn't deny that they would make a cute couple and, if Cam was still the same sweetheart that she was in high school, she would be a good role model for Riley. The brunette absolutely loved that little guy. He was sweet and adorable and had her wrapped around his little finger. Did Evie ever want kids of her own? She wasn't entirely sure. But she didn't certainly enjoy being Auntie Evie.

"I bring books to carnivals," Evelyn responded to Caleb, holding up the tattered novel from her lap as she bumped her shoulder against his. She winked and added in a teasing tone, "You never know when you're going to get bored." Her green eyes followed the pictures as he set them back on the table. Just as she was getting comfortable against Caleb, he noticed something and stood, the warmth of his body alongside her quickly dissipating. For a moment, the brunette baker felt sad. But she chose to ignore it. Caleb grabbed the mixtape from Whitney and went to play it, much to the other brunette woman's protests. "I'm sure it'll be great, Whitney," Evie commented with a grin, the previous tension of opening the memory box and completely ignoring Anna's letters gone. Caleb pressed play anyway, and music filled the room. She expected them all just to listen and have a good time. But Caleb had other ideas.

"No, no, no," Evie said, shaking her head at the idea of dancing. Sure, moving around the kitchen and listening to music could be considered dancing, and she did that quite often at the bakery. But never in front of people. Much to her chagrin, however, Caleb held out his hand to her. She looked from his tanned fingers up his arm to his face, and the grin she found there was rather intoxicating. Parker chimed in, and Evie couldn't help but shoot him a teasingly annoyed look. Caleb did look happy, genuinely happy. Evelyn hesitated for a moment, before letting out a breath. "Fine. But only because you asked so nicely and Parker is pressuring me," she answered with a smile of her own. She took his hand and let him pull her to her feet. Despite being a bit uncomfortable with the idea of dancing in front of others, she listened to the music. "I haven't heard this song in years," she said with a light laugh, letting the beat into her mind, soul, and body. For the first time in a long time, Evelyn didn't want to think, didn't want to overthink. Instead, she just wanted to feel. And so, she loosely wrapped her arms around Caleb's neck and let her body just move.

Wesley watched as Jace followed Cam from the room, and almost wanted to be the one going after his cousin instead. He had always wanted to protect her, ever since they were kids. But, as they got older, Cam made it clear that she could take care of herself. That being said, Wes would never give up protecting her. For now, he would just keep an eye out. If Jace hurt her, Wes would make sure that the dark-haired man regretted it. For now, however, he read over the math exam with a red 'A' printed at the top. Some of the questions and equations he still remembered, and others he had no clue about. It's true what they say, he didn't need everything he learned in high school in his day-to-day life. "I most certainly did. Mr. McLaughlin made sure of that. I still think he had it out for me since he knew a failed subject meant I wouldn't have been hockey team captain anymore. And he always made sure I knew how barbaric he thought hockey was," Wesley responded, the memory elicited a low chuckle from his chest.

It had never been about calculus or acing the test. Nor had it been about proving Mr. McLaughlin wrong about both him and hockey. In fact, the true meaning behind that exam lay outside of the classroom or, at least, his math classroom. Instead, it had been about those afternoons spent with Whitney, heads nearly touching as they were bent over one textbook after another. Hidden in the back of the library, or his bedroom while usually away on business trips, Wes was able to hang out with Whit without the prying eyes of his parents or the expectation of a frivolous relationship with Ava. He could just be himself, and he could be around the girl that he secretly liked, two real people. Whitney looked up at him, her nose scrunching a little as she smiled. Wes knew that smile well, the genuine emotion behind it. It took everything in his willpower not to lean forward and kiss her, right then and there.

"Don't forget about the entire two-liter of soda either," the brunette business responded with a chuckle, finding himself smiling back at her. But their moment didn't last long, as Caleb was quick to snatch Whitney's CD from her. "I'd like to hear the songs too," Wesley agreed, and it wasn't long before the music was playing. He grinned at his best bud, who had never been the best at dancing, attempting to do so with Ava. Then again, which of them ever had been all that great at dancing? Evie hesitantly let Caleb pull her to her feet, and that only left him and Whitney. She seemed to notice as well and turned to him with a hand outstretched. Wes nodded, standing and taking her hand to pull her to her feet. "Of course," he answered with a grin, pulling her close to him instinctively. Whitney had always been the shy type, and so he took the liberty of leading, moving them to the beat of the music. And, for the first time in a long time, the thought of work didn't even cross Wes' mind.

Parker ( Desert_Blossom Desert_Blossom )

The stuffed dog brought out way too many memories and for a moment, Ava got disconnected from the events in the living room. She stared in the plastic button eyes of the stuffed animal and a small smile appeared on his lips, gracing her features, almost glowing her face up. It seemed like it was centuries ago. That day was one of her most cherished memories. Wes was late that day and Ava was growing impatient. It was not fitting for the resident IT girl to be standing at the entrance of the fair all alone. He was supposed to meet her there but got delayed for whatever reason and Ava ended up waiting for him, slowly growing embarrassed as it sure looked like she was stood up. Until Parker came and kept her company. They decided it wouldn’t do to just stand there and walked inside together, having a few moments of fun on their own. He was so determined to win her that piece in one of the stalls and kept shooting at the targets until a small plushie landed in her arms. Their fingers touched as he handed it to her and while it was nothing but a brief moment, Ava felt her skin buzzing and itched to reach for his hand again.

And then Wes made his appearance and it was back to their charade of a happy popular couple. Ava hated it and knew Wes felt it the same. It was nothing personal against the prince but being on his arm was not what Ava wanted. She dreamed of the arm of another hockey player. Yet, it never happened for them and come graduation, it was too late. She buried her plushie in a memory box and to her, it was almost metaphoric, making her feel as if she was burying her feelings because that was the only way she could forget how much Parker meant to her.

“I did.” she spoke suddenly, her train of thoughts torn by Parker’s voice. “But I’m not going to tell you because it’s embarrassing.” she laughed and smushed his face with the toy. It would seem that their time would never come. It certainly didn’t in high school and now…now it was too late, right? Ava glanced down on her left hand to make sure she was still married, to confirm that in her head and try and get rid of all her desires but her stomach somersaulted. While Caleb was putting on the music, Ava was silently stressing out. How could she not notice earlier that her ring was gone? The wedding band and the large engagement rock were not on her finger and her heart skipped a few beats. She knew she had to look for both pieces but for now, she decided to have fun. To truly have fun after forever.

Ava genuinely laughed at Parker’s “I am a god” comment and her eyes followed Evie as she joined Caleb in a dance. And soon, Parker’s hands were tugging on her, pulling her up from her seat so she could dance with him as well. Spinning her around, Parker almost sent her flying and a small yelp escaped Ava’s lips but the boy managed to grab her and restore her balance. And when he threw their hands up in the air, it brought them even closer, not that Ava minded. She brought her hands down and around his neck, moving her whole body in the energetic rhythm of the song until it came to its end.

Silence of those few seconds between songs was almost deafening and when Royals started to play right after, Ava slowed down. “Are you going to give that lead another shot or you want me to do it?” she smirked, making the sway of her hips slower and way more sensual, just as the song was making her feel. “Maybe the slower one will work out better for us.” she added, feeling her breath hitch a little as if the slower song made her feel things. As if not just a stuffed dog came out from that memory box but also a heavy load of all her feelings she tried to put away all those years ago.

Cam ( apolla apolla )

Comforting people was hard for Jace. He never possessed that skill and it was putting him into a lot of awkward situations. Seeing a distraught person made him feel weird but not because they were weirdos. Mostly because the big bad boy was feeling embarrassing as well. So many thoughts usually flooded his brain. What to say? Where to look? What to do with his hands? Should he offer a tissue? Or a hug, Was he even a hugger? Jesus, it was all just too overwhelming and if it was up to him or if it was anyone else but Cam, Jace would barely move. Come on, he had trouble comforting his own son when Riley skinned his knees! Usually just told him to suck it up and be a man which then the little dude ran around screaming he was a big man. But right here, this was not a scene to be solved by mere pat on the shoulder and “be a man” advice.

When Jace stepped into the room, the very one he and Cam had slept in the night before in a tight hug after resolving a few ghosts from the past, the picture broke his heart. Cam was sitting on the ground, her shoulders trembled in stifled cries and she looked like she was just so horribly miserable. And of course, the big grunt he was, Jace just offered to talk about it in his own clumsy way. Not only did he kick himself for being such a klutz but he started to hate himself even more when he saw a fresh flood of tears in her eyes. “Well…I think the better question is, do you?” he asked her and sat down behind her. Her small body leaned against his and his thick tattooed arms wrapped around her in what he was hoping was a comforting embrace. “I know, baby. I know. We all miss her.” he hummed quietly, rocking Cam a little as he held her. Jace felt there was more on her mind, something heavy even. But it would have to be Cam to start talking about it. Jace wouldn’t pry.

Tones of cheerful music sounded from downstairs, muffled by the distance the two were at. Jace thought he even heard laughter and cries of joy but chose to ignore that as the person on his chest was way more important to him. “Look, Cammy. I’m not going to pretend I know what to say here. We both know Evie or Whit, hell, even Ava, would have done a way better job here. But I want you to know that whatever that is you have on your mind and is weighing you down, you can tell us. Or you don’t have to. It’s up to you. But we all are here for you. We are here for each other and yes, mostly because Anna wanted to but once again, she knew what she was doing. This is good for all of us. If nothing else, it can be a cleanse from everyday life. And if Wesley can spend fifteen minutes without checking that cell of his, you can smile and laugh and forget life outside of this cabin. Sounds good, baby girl?” he asked, placing a soft lingering kiss on her temple.

“Okay, enough moping. We’re missing out on some serious fun down there.” he spoke all of a sudden. “Come on, let’s go back there. I feel there will be more than enough time for tears but tonight, we’re having fun. Maybe without tons of liquor so we can remember at least one night of this retreat.” he laughed and scurried to his feet, pulling Cam up with her. With one hand around her thin waist, he steered her out of the room and back downstairs where three couples were already indulging in their dance. Just as the last couple entered, Macklemore finished his song and the next song followed, a way slower one. Jace took a deep breath in and his gaze fell upon the corsage on the table. Biting his lip hard, an idea occurred to him and he reached for the box, taking the fragile piece out of it. A small smile graced his features as he turned back to Cam, sporting an almost sheepish expression on his face. “Cammie? Will you dance with me?” he murmured offering the corsage to her. The prom was long gone. But if he got a chance for a do-over, he would definitely grab it and hold it tight.

Cameron Hale

As Cameron sit there in Jace's arms, she couldn't help but wonder about what she'd said. Even though Anna had been the fixer of the group, the one who always seemed to know what to say or do, what would she do if she were here now? Granted, if she were here, the rest of them might not be. And what would happen once this trip came to an end? Would things go back to the way they were? Would Cameron return to the place that was her home now, back to nights of dancing for strangers and collecting dollar bills from the dance floor? The thought made her nauseous, but she wasn't sure if that was because of the job itself and what it sometimes entailed or it it was the thought of losing Jace and her friends all over again. She'd realized now by seeing them again just how much she missed and loved each of them. But her feelings went deeper than that, and not all of them were good.

Did she want to talk about that night? She didn't know. Still, that didn't stop her from leaning against Jace's hard body, sniffling all over again when he told her that they all missed her, too. She wasn't trying to be selfish; she knew she wasn't the only one who had loved their dear friend. A few more tears escaped as she clung to him, listening to his speech. Towards the end, she finally tilted her head back to look at him, nodding softly when he asked her if that sounded good. Baby girl. Something about the pet name made her feel warm from the inside out, and flickered the hope within her that things could be good. That they could stay that way, despite the turmoil that life could cause. "I can do that." She whispered up to him, reaching up with her other hand to cup his face.

Familiar music had started to play downstairs, and when Jace spoke again, she wanted to agree with him. Enough moping. She even laughed when he said that maybe they could remember this night the next day. "I would like to remember at least some of this trip." She agreed, letting him pull her up with him. The pair headed back downstairs, and even though she knew her face was red and puffy, nobody commented on it. She felt Jace let go of her, but caught sight of Caleb looking her way with a questioning look in his gaze. She nodded at him to let him know she was okay, then heard Jace's voice calling her name again. Turning away from Caleb, Cam gasped when she saw him holding out the corsage to her. She looked from it up to him, staring for a moment before she smiled. "Anytime at all." She told him, holding out her wrist for him to slide the band on. And then she rested her arms around his neck, able to see both the old flowers and the man she felt so deeply for. "You'll have to show me what I missed out on."

Caleb Thompson

Caleb wasn't really a sentimental type of guy, at least not about most things. Looking at those pictures of himself and Evie from the carinval, though, stirred all sorts of feelings within him. He remembered that he was nervous because he'd started to figure out how he really felt about her, but he'd done his best not to show it. On the outside, he'd been the same stoner goofball he always was, sneaking through the fair with a blunt hidden in his pocket for later. They'd played games, rode rides, but those pictures had easily been his favorite part of the night. He also remembered how he wanted to kiss her on the last picture, but at the last second, he'd chickened out. He'd kicked himself for it, but the pictures were still perfect, and he couldn't believe she'd put them in the box.

Needing to expel some of that negativity in the room, he was quick to grab the mixed CD from Whitney, making sure she couldn't take it back. "I didn't say it was weird." He smirked, shaking his head. "In fact, it's the opposite. Probably the coolest thing in the box." He grinned at the nerd over his shoulder before he placed the CD in the player, closing the lid and hitting play. The song that started to play immediately brought another grin to his face, and he turned to ask Evie-- in his own dramatic way-- to dance with him. At first, just as he thought, she didn't want to do it. The refusal was there, but thanks to Parker's helping him out, she finally agreed. Taking his hand, he pulled her up and closer to him, moving them out of the way of the couches and table.

"I haven't either." He admitted, sliding his hands down her sides to rest at her waist. "It's a real throwback." He spun them around slowly, mostly because he wanted to see Parker making a fool of himself. Whitney and Wes had gotten up too, and soon enough, they were even joined by a red faced Cam and Jace. The look on his face sobered some as he met eyes with Cameron, but she just nodded at him to let him know that she was okay. He still watched her for a moment more before he looked back down at Evie, removing one hand from her waist to brush a loose strand of hair out of her face. Leaning in closer, he made sure that only she could hear him when he spoke. "You can lean on me, if you want. I'm not the best dancer, but at least I'm better than Parker." Pulling back, he bit back a snicker as his hand found her waist again. "Can we just pretend, even if it's just for now, that the bullshit didn't happen?"

Whitney Jeffries

Growing up, Whitney had always been the logical one, perhaps even too logical for a young girl sometimes. Yes, she still had a vivid imagination and had created all sorts of make believe worlds and scenarios in her head, but that’s all they were- made up. In reality, the logical part of her always won out. Well, almost always.

Crushing on her sister’s boyfriend throughout high school wasn’t even close to logical, rational or in the realm of something that could become a reality. Next to the glamorous and sociable It Girl, Whitney was just… Whitney. Or “Ava’s little sister”. And so, Whitney cherished those study sessions with Wes, seeing them as as close to her girlish dreams as she would get. She was thankful for the friendship between them and that would have to be enough.

The nerd had always been blessed with a good memory, but she’d especially held on to the memories with Wes. For Wes to then be able to recall the study session which helped him ace his exam made Whitney light up. “And the soda.” She echoed, nodding. “I could never forget.”

For a moment the way Wes was smiling at her made Whitney think of their moment alone in the closet and her stomach fluttered… but then she was reminded that they weren’t alone now as the mixtape was taken from her and put in the stereo. Happy that her friends seemed to be pleased with the music, at least enough to start dancing, Whitney emboldened herself to ask Wes to dance with her. Ava seemed entirely preoccupied with Parker, and if her sister hadn’t been upset about Whitney spending 7 minutes in Heaven with her ex, what harm could a dance do? Besides, she was married already.

Wes grinned as he pulled Whitney close and the youngest Jeffrey sister nearly melted as she tipped her head to look up at him. Light laughter escaped the uncoordinated nerd who was more than happy to follow his lead as they moved to the music together. Usually she was a self conscience dancer, but right now she wasn’t worried about anyone judging her. She was amongst her friends and they were all having a good time. It was a nice escape after the memory box was brought out.

As the next song came on, Jace and Cam rejoined the group and Whit smiled, relieved that the blonde seemed to be feeling better. Her smile grew even wider when she heard Jace ask Cam for the dance and slip the corsage on her wrist. How sweet for the pair to have the dance they never got in high school. Mix tape for the win!

Royals was a slower tempo and Whit slipped her hands up around Wes’s neck before really thinking about it, surprising even herself at how instinctively it had been. Her brow furrowed for a moment as she cast her dark eyes up to meet Wes’s to see if she’d gone too far now that alcohol or a dare weren’t involved. An apology was already forming on her tongue and she lightened her hold on his shoulders, ready to pull back at any sign of discomfort or annoyance from the class prince. This was reality after all, she reminded herself, not one of her day dreams.

Parker Pierce

Nobody was more relieved for the change in atmosphere than Parker. He’d feared he’d ruined the rest of the day with Anna’s box, but the music and dancing were bringing life back into the cabin. Even Evie had agreed to dance with Caleb, thanks to the clown’s help of course, and Parker thought he saw Whit asked Wes to dance. Things really were looking up. All they needed now was for Jace and Caleb to return. The blonde’s emotional escape had been hard to watch, but at least the tatted member of their group had gone after to console her. Parker kept forgetting that the two weren’t actually married like he’d mistakenly thought at Anna’s funeral, and he wondered what was keeping them apart. They already seemed like a package deal… And speaking of which…

As the Macklemore song neared it’s end, Parker spied Cameron and Jace come down the stairs. “Looks like we’ve got the gang all back together…” He hummed, glancing down at Ava and flashing her a carefree grin. It was like the final weight was lifted. The fasten your seatbelt sign was off and Parker was free to move about the cabin now that Cam was feeling better. Thank god!

Parker enjoyed the last few moments of following Ava’s lead to the up beat song before a slower one began. Ava questioned whether Parker wanted to try giving leading another go, hoping the slower song would be better for them. The clown was just mulling over the idea when Ava’s more sultry movements distracted him. “Uhhh…” He replied, losing the ability to formulate coherent thoughts for a moment. The brunette woman was dangerous, and Parker had a vague sense that there was supposed to be a line he couldn’t cross, but… Glancing around at the others, Parker made sure they were all in their own little worlds before turning back to Ava. “Well if you keep that up it’s awfully tempting to let you continue leading…” He replied quietly, his hands shifting to rest on Ava’s hips. “But I can give it another go…”

The clown grinned impishly and pulled Ava flush against him. He expected the sensation to feel foreign, but it was like his body already knew the way she would feel against his. But how? They’d never danced together. Not like this. The thought that maybe it was because they were meant for each other crossed Parker’s mind, but he quickly reminded himself that Ava was still married. If they’d really been meant for each other Ava wouldn’t have said “I do” to someone else. And of course there was the fact that she’d dated his best friend instead of him in high school. Despite the connection he always thought they had. That was all in the past now though, and the group was having too much fun for Parker to dwell on things he couldn’t change. So instead, he ignored them, and danced with the married woman in his arms as if she was single.

Holding her close, Parker swayed to the music with Ava, slowly turning them in a gradual circle. He wanted to tuck his head next to hers, but he knew he didn’t have that much self control. So instead, he leaned in a little and whispered, “Come on… tell me what you named the stuffed dog. I won’t laugh, I promise.” He let his lips linger next to her ear for a moment, enjoying the scent of her shampoo, before straightening back up to minimize temptation.

What an interesting feeling it was, to simply exist without anxiety or thought or care. It was so freeing, to throw any and all worry to the wayside and just have fun. The music resonated in her chest, seeming to speak to her soul and control the movements of her body while her brain was on a break. Her emerald green eyes flickered open as she heard Caleb respond. Evelyn felt his hands at her waist, and clandestinely bit down on the inside of her cheek to tame any blush that threatened to tint her cheeks. "Does that mean we're getting old now?" she said, a teasing tone in her voice. In the grand scheme of things, it hadn't been that long since they were all in high school together. But sometimes, it certainly felt like it had. Glancing around the room at her dancing friends, Evie couldn't help but think that this was what Anna had wanted, why she had them make that time capsule memory, to begin with. Just a feeling of nostalgia and togetherness that they hadn't had since high school.

The song changed into something a bit slower, and Evie's attention was brought back to Caleb as he pushed a strand of free hair from her face behind her ear. She silently sucked in a breath when he leaned in, thinking maybe he was going to kiss her. And when he didn't the brunette baker was surprised to find that she felt disappointed. Deep down, she wanted that relationship they had back in high school again, wanted to be close to him again. Despite her words and her actions since their reunion, Evelyn still cared about Caleb and his family, more than he possibly even knew. Glancing at Parker at Caleb's words, she laughed and nodded. "Ain't that the truth." Still in the mindset of going with the flow and free-thinking, Evie offered her dance partner a smile and moved closer to him at his request. Her body brushed against his as she rested her head on his shoulder.

They swayed like that for a moment, just enjoying each other's company and the music. Evelyn couldn't help but inhale, never wanting that moment to end. "Yes," she answered Caleb's question without hesitation, turning her green eyes back to his and offering him a softer, sincere smile. All she wanted was to pretend the so-called "bullshit" hadn't happened. She wanted to go back to how things were, to what their relationship used to be. She wanted to tease and laugh with Caleb again, to talk about life and love and everything in between. But a part of Evie knew that they would have to talk to one another, compromise, and make changes if things were going to work out between them. Was either of them ready for that? She wasn't entirely sure. But, at least for that night, they could pretend that the last five years never happened. "I missed you quite a bit, Caleb," she found herself saying, for once not filtering her thoughts. If that sort of bravado was going to continue, she was going to need more liquid courage. As the slow song came to an end, Evie pulled back from Caleb and offered him a grin. "I think I could use a cigarette. Care to join me?"
