Everything Ava did not need to think about was slowly receding to the background until only the laughter and her good mood remained. The moment of her phone call which had left her blue and grim was long gone and the smile curling her lips was not a fake one anymore. And after a few sips of tequila, it was only growing wider. Especially seeing Parker inquiring about Jace and Cameron. Though Jace cut it all off when he declared there was no marriage or anything. For a moment, Ava’s gaze looked for Cameron because the way Jace said it was not the nicest and maybe there was a different wording that would be much more suitable but since the brunette took another sip from her bottle and the liquor fell into her empty stomach, she soon forgot about all worries. Especially as Parker turned back and his head ended up in her lap.
Ava looked down, her dark eyes traced Parker’s face, drinking in his grown-up features. The teenage mischievous spark was still in his eyes and though his face and Parker overall became even more masculine, his old self was still there. And while in her thoughts, her fingers subconsciously disappeared in his hair, Ava let them run through the nest he could wear so well, getting lost in the moment for a bit. And maybe it was alcohol speaking. Caleb started to talk just in time for Ava not becoming weird or embarrassing and as he proposed Truth or Dare, Ava showed them all a nice toothy grin. Especially as her name was called first. Looking around, she was basically asking for it, for the others to dare her.
And since Parker asked her to stop using her phone for the day, she just scoffed. Easy. And once the class clown removed himself from her lap, the brunette leaned down to her bag, fished her phone out, noticed around a dozen of text messages (half of them being from Benjamin already) and with the best feeling in the world, she turned the device off, handing it to her sister. Whitney put it away immediately and, in all honesty, Ava already felt better. As if that elephant sitting on her chest finally lifted its glorious ass and moved away. And she celebrated it with a long healthy swig from the bottle, the one that sent her to the tipsier side for good, making her sight hazy for a moment before she blinked it away.
The rest of the way, she spent in tears. Maybe sober lawyer Ava would not laugh that much but almost drunk former IT girl was having the time of her life with the truths and the dares. The proverbial shackles from her wrists and ankles fell down and she roamed free. And before she knew it, Caleb parked the van in front of the familiar cabin, the place where they all spent so much time and which was breathing memories from every corner. Another salve of laughter left her lips seeing Parker’s clumsy way of getting out of the vehicle. She followed right after him, still holding her bottle in one hand, carefully, not to spill anything, and her shopper bag in the other. Her coat remained in the car for now but tequila was keeping her warm enough.
Ava walked aside a little bit, took a deep breath and closed her eyes, not claiming her bags right away. She wanted to soak in the atmosphere for a moment. Glistening snow was surrounding them, covered every inch of the land and it all looked like straight out of winter wonderland. And when the young woman turned back to the van, seeing the others taking their bags, she grinned as an idea formed in her head. She set her bag and the bottle down in the snow and picked up some snow, forming a small ball in her hand. She was not the best shot, not even sober but she just felt goofy. And for sure, once the ball left her hand, it landed in Parker’s messy hair and Ava burst out laughing as at that very moment, it looked like the best prank ever. And only then she went to take her suitcase from the said boy. “You have something…here…” she smiled and reached up to brush remaining snow from his head, leaving the hand there for maybe a bit longer than she should. Remind her why she never spoke up? Not once?
It was shortly after that she finally walked inside and went to carelessly drop her bag to the room. There were more important things on the agenda than unpacking. That could totally wait. Seeing Wes in that loveseat, she grinned. “We used to share that one, remember?” she asked with a wink that did not mean anything. It felt good not having to pretend anymore. She basically threw herself into a comfy bean bag close to the fireplace just as the businessman called for the others to hurry. “Okay, you wanna play? Fine let’s play. Truth or Dare, lover boy?” Ava asked him, tilting her head in curiosity. Her tequila was somewhere close, just out of her touch. But she knew that someone would be the best and hand over some more shots.
