Ashton was dragged down the hall by two of his brothers, arch angel Gabriel and Cassiel. Neither of them said a word to him as they dragged him through the shiny white of heaven. Thoughts rushed through Ashton's head as he was dragged, his legs unable to even try to move. He daren't struggle against his brothers, they had strength in numbers.
It wasn’t like he was an outcast; his brothers loved him and he loved his brothers. They all spent time together working and trying to build a better world. But what if they had found out his secret? What if they found out about him? Ashton's thoughts stopped when he was cast at the feet of his brother, archangel Michael. Michael looked down at him, his face full of disappointment and disgust.
“Ashton, we have reason to believe that you are in love with a demon. Is this true?” Michael asked, looking upon him in his white robes. Ashton said nothing, his mouth dry with frear. For five thousand years Aston had hidden this secret and now it was finally coming to light. He was going to be banished for sure. “The confirmation is in your silence, brother. Why would you betray us like this?”
“I did nothing, brother. I have not acted on my thoughts. I cannot help who I love!” Ashton said, tears falling from his eyes as he attempted to stand up. Gabriel and Cassiel cast him back before Michaels feet, his face meeting the glossy white floor. Ashton silenced at once, not wanting to make things worse.
There was silence for a moment as Michael turned away. Michael was clearly upset but at what he was not certain. Was he upset at what he had done or the punishment he would have to give him? Or was he upset by both? Ashton awaited his fate, his heart pounding like it never had before. He was terrified.
“You are banished from heaven for all eternity. You lose all power, including the power to call your wings. You are a fallen angel. Goodbye, brother. You chose your fate.” Michael said. Those were the last words that Ashton heard before he fell, falling from the sky and hurtling towards the ground. He hit it before falling unconscious. He awoke the next morning in a meadow, tall grass and flowers surrounded him. It was night, the stars and moon beautiful and serene.
Ashton sat up and for the first time in his life he felt pain. He put his hand to his head and groaned. He decided to try and leave the meadow and find help. He needed food and water and he wouldn’t get that here. He walked in a random direction and felt scared. He didn’t want to be here, he wanted to be back with his brothers in heaven. He wanted to be safe.He just hoped that the humans would be nice to him.
Hours later Ashton came across a village in the early morning when the sun was starting to make its way up the sky and walked up to a building that said ‘hotel’ on it. He knocked, hoping that somebody would be inside to help him. A lady opened the door and smiled at him.
“Hello, what brings you here?” The lady said, ushering him in. She wore nice clothes with a floral patten on them. It was then that Ashton really noticed what he was wearing. He was wearing a white t-shirt and some black skinny jeans. Ashton followed her and sat on a chair she pointed to.
“I was kicked out of my home.” Ashton told her, thankful for some interaction. “My brothers wanted me gone and I’ve been walking all through the night to try and find somebody to help me. I’m only sixteen, you see.”
“Sixteen? Oh dear! Lets get you into bed.” The lady said, ushering him up the stairs and into one of the hotel rooms. “Don’t worry, you don’t have to pay a dime to stay here. You can stay until we find you some help and get you a place to stay. My husband will be back in the evening. I’m sure he can help.”
With a thanks, Ashton climbed into bed and fell asleep within minutes. He was exhausted. He stayed with the Karlings for a few days and Mr Karling even taught Ashton how to tie his laces. It was then, however, that something bad happened.
“Why did your brothers kick you out, then?” Mr Karling asked as he showed Ashton how to tie his laces. Ashton froze for a second, feeling sad while thinking about his brothers. It was clear that this had been a burning question in Mr Karlings mind for a while now and that he just had to ask it. “If you don’t mind me asking. No, son, like this. Let me untie that mess for you.”
“I love someone I shouldn’t I guess. They did not approve of him so they chucked me out.” Ashton said while waiting for another attempt to tie his laces. Mr Karling stopped, not saying anything. A few moment later he asked Ashton what he said. “I loved a man that they - “
“You love a man? A boy? This is a christian household, young man!” Mr Karling took off his belt and stood over Ashton, his face full of fury. Ashton cowered slightly, not used to being hated for men liking men. This wasn’t frowned upon in heaven. “You are going to have to learn to be straight. Gays don’t do well in this society -”
There was a voice in Ashton's head, a voice he knew all too well. His wings shot out of him, the black feathers different from their prior white. But Ashton thought that he couldn’t control his wings anymore? ‘You can’t, it’s me, your demon. Only I can call your wings.’
