Virtue: Virtues are means that grant a character a great sense of self-actualization, but which they are often tempted to ignore. A character can have "ambitious" as a virtue if following their ambitions is what makes them more fulfilled or "generous" if offering help to others is their central mission.

Vice: Vices instead are short-term comfort and a distraction from the world. Often, they are means to distract oneself from problems. A character can have "ambitious" as a vice if advancement is all that they care for, or "generous" if they are moved to acts of compassion that they consider a sign of weakness on their own part.

The Virtue / Vice Dichotomy is only limited to your ability to write well. Anything can be a virtue, and anything can be a vice as shown in the examples. For simplicity, look the the "Seven Deadly Sins" as examples of 'true vices', and their antonyms for 'true virtues'. Just keep in mind these can be expressed opposite of each other.

Name: Timothy Oliver Clarke

Vice: Timothy is very Paranoid that he will have to live with his guilt the rest of his life.


Virtue: He does small nice things to try and soothe his guilty conscience, therefore that makes him, generous.

Personality & Backstory: Timothy Clarke was a very dull child, he grew up in a poverty struck home and barely went to school. Because of this he isn’t good in subjects such as Math, Science, and History, but he is surprisingly proficient in English despite his lack of education. He speaks with clear and advanced dictation and can read all sorts of books. Alas, because of his troubled childhood, he has had a very negative outlook on life. He was continuing down an endless spiral of tragedy because of this, so he decided to make a change. He goes out of his way to help people and make other’s lives better to try and clear his guilty conscience. Timothy used to be a Hikikomori, but recently began leaving his room because of his newfound redemption.
