Other How did you guys find your art style? Has it changed?

Hello everyone and fellow artists! I was just wondering how you guys settled into your current style of drawing or rendering/modelling.

I’m still trying to figure out what direction I’m heading, art-wise. So I’m curious to hear about people’s journey to finding their own unique vibe and if it’s changed over the years. I’d say I was drawing more realistically before and now it’s shifting more to cartoon form. It’s easier to play with expressions and poses on a cartoony sort of image that would look a little wonky on realistic proportions.

So I thought to ask: Has your style changed? How did you find your current style? Did you ever find yourself imitating someone’s style previously? And do you have any tips for people in exploration/between styles?

Thanks for reading! :D

Well! I used to draw the cats from warrior cats once upon a time lolol! I remember watching those animations and copying their style, because i thought it was like, the BEST thing ever!! After a while, I outgrew the warrior cats series and started getting into anime! That's when I really started drawing digitally and such! My style has, without a doubt, changed, as I used to draw cats and started drawing humans!

As for tips, I would say that it's okay to "trace" or "imitate" other people's styles! I used to look at art from various artists such as Maplespyder, Finchwing, Whiskermoon, and others! (You can find all of these people on YouTube!) The only thing I would say is, if you are going to trace over art and all, please for the love of god... DO NOT DISCREDIT!

What does that mean? Well for example, let's say there is a person who traces over some anime drawing! And then they go on to say that they drew it! That's not right! It's not nice and it hurts the original artist very much! Now, let's use the same scenario but instead they say that kittycat69 (a random username I picked out) originally drew this and that they traced over it.. that's okay!

Overall, I am proud to admit that my art style has been influenced by many other artists! And I'm sorry if I don't seem "professional" enough to call myself an artist! I just wanted to give you my answer of how I found my style! Thank youu and have a good day <3 !

I agree with what Gingingin says, Dont be scared to copy what you like, and dont be scared to look like someone else's style (yes give credit to who you're learning from watching) . because over time you'll find things that you like different and want to tweak, and slowly change the style to become what you have imagined in your mind.

My style has been all over the place. All my childhood all I wanted was to draw cardcaptor sakura, but as i got older i realized that I really love cartoons and want to do more gravity falls looking things. And now i have a more cartoony anime style that Still changes everyday (also due to the fact, I'm bad at recreating my own art and need to practice that XD)
And once you find the style dont feel like you can't change it again, Its okay to change and decide to do something different.
