Holiday Themes + Birthday Suggestion

I believe last year we did falling snow animations on the site, but maybe we could create a theme around that time which gives users the option to have it on/off? I am aware that you were able to turn it off last time too, but with the theme we could have red, green and other Christmas-like colours incorporated into the site. This could also be for halloween (it's kinda to late to do it now though lol) easter and other holidays we decide to celebrate (maybe even for the site's anniversary?)

My second suggestion would be to have some cute little balloon icon next to a user's name/on their profile picture area if it was their birthday. They could of course choose to have it shown/hidden, but it would be hidden automatically if the user had their birthday hidden. :)

I also want to add that I miss the RpNation wide birthday list and I also think it would be cute to have a notification pop up saying like SO-AND-SO WHO YOU ARE FOLLOWING HAS A BIRTHDAY TODAY GO POST ON THEIR PROFILE

:3

Agreed! However, maybe secular holidays could be celebrated? They're religiously and culturally neutral and could be more inclusive. Made-up/RpN holidays could also be used.

This site is based in America though, but I still think it's good to be inclusive.

what do you mean by secular? like pancake day? xD

Nonreligious. If by Pancake Day you mean Shrove Tuesday (considering how many holidays there are who knows), I don't think it would qualify. But then again, pancakes aren't some religious/culture symbol or anything so if we wanted to do that we could probably just change the date.

We don't have the option to hide birthdays anymore, unfortunately.  Either you've entered it and it shows, or you don't enter it (or you only enter month/day, or whatever) and it doesn't show.

If the birthday isn't entered isn't it hidden?

It should be. ^_^  I think some of us thought that users would have the ability to hide the birthday icon alone.  It makes much more sense to have it correspond with the birthday setting though.

I differentiate between "hidden" and "not there at all."  Maybe that's just me. ;)   We used to have it where your birthday could be hidden even if you had entered it, but this software doesn't support that.

Mine was entered and everyone could see it. I asked and a staff member hid it for me so that nobody could see it. So is that still classified as it being entered? Or is it hidden?

It's not there at all anymore - if it wasn't cleared, it'd still be displayed.

Also, so far as celebrating certain holidays through themes and the like - I don't personally see a problem with it as long as it's optional and not up in your face. The snow, for example, was able to be turned on/off. I do believe there were (?) Christmas decorations on the theme (as there have been in some past badges) but it's not as if you're getting away from Christmas even if you don't celebrate (as people in my community/some of my family don't celebrate at all.)

Being inclusive makes sense, but for major events, it doesn't make much sense to me to pretend a major holiday of a widely practiced religion (which is a holiday at the federal level in the countries of many of our userbase) doesn't exist.

Personal opinion, though.

I'd like to see/take part in more threads and the like for smaller holidays - I remember the talk like a pirate day thread was lots of fun! And as far as Shrove, it's celebrated by the religious and non, and doesn't correspond heavily to Lent anymore through most cultures.

RpN-specific holidays could be an interesting prospect as well. I'd almost say we could base some of them off of past contests - the start of the new year (when a spring thing gets going), maybe highlighting non-seculars, that kind of thing.
