Bertrand Ryker (BLUE), 17 - 7th Year - Ravenclaw
Bertrand listened to her with half an ear as he wondered at when this fucking train was going to get to school. It had felt like a lifetime had passed already. He sighed. She muggle born like him, but from an entirely different lifestyle. She was introduced to magic in an entirely different way. Did she have a similar support structure? Was her magic encouraged? Wait... were? An orphan? Did her parents know she had been a witch? Curious. "If I were, to be honnête with you? It is not as glamorous as we might have you know. I love it more than anything, and I love my country, it's history, and it's culture... but alas my city is a city of the world, and every year millions of people walk through our streets, not to go to work, or add anything - but to consume. Consume all those things I hold dear. And since they bring money, much of my city has been changed... it has evolved into a feed bag, creating less - preferring to play a shovel with which to force an 'experience' into the throats of wide-eyed tourists."
He leaned back in his seat, his eyes glinting slightly behind his glasses. He was not normally this contemplative, but the drink seemed to make him very chatty, and very nostalgic. His voice remained matter of fact, but there was a slight sadness about it. "For the last few years, when I was not at school - I travelled often, only being home for de ma mère shows, or when père releases a book. Otherwise, I visited quite a few spaces. We avoided Britain... but I got to see Hong Kong, dim sum after tai chi in the morning, or wearing twenty-four-hour suits on a ferry during new years fireworks. Or wander about the ancient homes of Michelangelo, Dante and Da Vinci in Florence - or eating gelato while tossing coins over my shoulder into the Trevi. Rio is very beautiful as well... Did you know Christ the Redeemer, the statue - took nine years to make... originally it was going to have a ball in one hand and a cross in the other - the organisers called it 'Christ with a ball' until it was redesigned into the art deco styled, open-armed Jesus you see today." He casually spoke, his mind travelled first towards the east, casually moving west across Europe and then across the Atlantic towards South America, and Brazil. He loved to travel. But sometimes he missed quiet afternoons in the countryside far more than he would ever actually admit. He looked back at her.
"Traveling as a witch will be much easier than travelling as a muggle. There is an old pureblood custom that many other young witches and wizards have taken up - a world tour after they graduate. You should really consider it after you finish with Hogwarts." He made to reach for his drink again but stopped - shaking his head slightly. "What things interest you? Do you have any interesting hobbies?" He looked her over, trying but failing again to try and decipher what things she found interesting, beyond the cat.
