Hector finished setting up his tent in the camping area as the sun blazed in the evening sky. He had been driving all day, and was glad to finally sit at the communal fire pit, to rest his tired body. Others had gathered, some recounting their daily hike, other's, like Hector, just settling down for their first night out in the wilderness.
He listened, much too tired to contribute, and rolled his shoulders to ease the tension from his muscles.
"We're thinking of just canceling our hike for tomorrow." A woman started to say, as she roasted a marshmallow over the fire. "Weatherman predicts rain." She explained.
"It can't get that bad." Hector said, frowning. He'd be disappointed if he had to cancel his hike, wanting to enjoy every day he could on the trails that wound around the base of this mountain. "A little rain never hurt anyone, and if it was going to be that bad the park rangers would say something." He said, pouting. The woman shrugged, giving him a dogged look. He cleared his throat and kept to himself after that.
Flopping down on the floor of her tent Samantha let out a long, relaxing, breath. It had been a long day for her and she was excited to finally get to relax. Before she left she got into a tiff with her parents on the phone this morning because they thought she was doing too much gallivanting about, and wasn't taking life too seriously. Mostly all she heard was "Blah blah blah", but it still got a little under her skin. So, she was ready to relax.
A few minutes pass and Sam realizes that she is actually pretty hungry. Mustering the motivation to get up she exits her tent to raid her food. Since she was kinda tired she decided to go with a sandwich she made the day before. Instead of going back inside her tent to eat Sam set up a chair so she could enjoy nature as she ate.
Not too far away she noticed that there was a group fire going on with several people warming themselves around the fire. It crossed her mind to go over there, but she was fried on human communication for the day because of her parents. She actually kinda liked being alone in nature, it was calming, and she could plan her hike for tomorrow.
Hector easily fell into a deep sleep after dinner, and awoke the next morning with the sun and the cicadas. He got dressed in silence eating a quick dry breakfast as he looked at the hiking trails.
He was hoping to tackle the hardest one first, just in case he did encounter bad weather or other unforeseen complications.
But as he stepped out of his tent the sky was cloudless, the breeze soft and light. He felt good about today's hike.
He threw his pack over his shoulder and took a quick selfie with the mountain in the background, excited to finally be out after months of indoor monotony.
He struck off on the trail, nearly knocking into someone in his excitement. "Oh shit, I'm sorry, girl!" He said.
That night she turned in a bit early because she knew she had a long, tiring, day ahead of her. Almost as soon as she laid her head down on her pillow she was out.
The morning came a bit faster than she entirely wanted because she wanted to sleep a bit longer, but she didn't want to waste away the day. Samantha groggily got up and began getting around for her hike. She left her chair in the same spot from last night because she wanted to eat breakfast from the same beautiful view. Finally she was starting to calm down from yesterdays stresses.
Finishing up with breakfast she cleans up so that she doesn't attract any animals while she is gone. She also puts what she can either inside her tent or car, so that in case it begins to rain by some fluke her things are safe.
Excited for the adventure ahead she straps on her bag and heads to the beginning of the trails. Not wanting to take the wrong one she pulls out her map as she gets close. Not really hearing anyone around, her Sam doesn't notice someone coming up behind her, so she doesn't move out of the way as they draw closer. She only ever actually notices them when they accidentally run into her.
"I'm sorry! It's my fault, I wasn't paying attention!"
There was a bit moment of silence between the two, so she figured she would try and break it. Fanatically puts her map in her pocket, slightly crumpling it, and offers him a handshake.
He got a little tongue tied for a second as he fumbled to put away his phone.
"Don't worry about it in the slightest, Samantha. We're both headed out into the trails. Let's walk together, yeah?" He said, hoping to have some company out on his hike. While he was fine going it alone, he was a talker and would much prefer that instead of talking to himself (which he would do if he had to).
"I'm Hector, by the way. What brings you out to the trails, this beautiful morning." He said, walking backwards to talk face to face with the girl.
She politely smiled "I guess we can walk together for a bit." In a way she way hoping to get away from people, but she had the rest of her trip to be alone, one day with someone wouldn't kill her.
"I'm out here to escape one last time before I start the next step of my life...school or career..something." Samantha sighs, looking down for a moment, but then quickly looks back up at him with a half smile. "Gotta grow up sometime I guess." After a moments pause she, surprisingly, speaks up once more. "So what brings you up here? Hiking junkie or something?"
"Fantastic! I like meeting new people!" He said, running into someone else.
"Watch it buddy!"
"Oh, sorry bro!" He said, sheepishly before righting himself on the trail, instead of walking backwards. His lanky body constricted so he was occupying a smaller space, shoulders hunched a little, but face as ecstatic as ever. "Growing up, hmm." He said nodding his head. "I feel ya, girl. This is the first vacation I've had in years! I hope you enjoy your last days of freedom!" He said, with a wink.
The word junkie made him flinch a bit. "I wouldn't necessarily frame it like that. More like outdoors enthusiast. Though as far as addictions go I'd take hiking over some of the shit I used to do in my hay day." He said, voice losing volume towards the end. He was a little ashamed of the ass he had made of himself,so many years ago.
"But yes I like hiking. Any particular reason you chose this place? Cause I'm here specifically for Altos Canyon. They say the view from up there is like a religious experience!" He said,
She laughed a little under her breath watching him blatantly walk into someone else. 'Looks like he's a bit of a clumsy one.' She thought.
"Well, I'm not much of an 'outdoors enthusiast' so I pretty much chose this place because it was closest to me, but far enough away to where it actually would feel like I was on some kind of a vacation. But when I was looking at this place I read up a bit on Altos Canyon, and it seems pretty cool. Although I don't see myself going there."
Reaching back into her pocket, Samantha pulled out the crumpled mess that was her map. Doing her best to unfold it she searched it again for the path she planned on taking. Eventually finding it she point to it.
"There. That's the path I'm taking. It's not too difficult, but I hear it is beautiful. I'm not much of a hiker so I don't want to push myself too hard when I'm by myself."
"Gotcha!" He said, leaning over her easily because of their height difference and looking at her map. He nodded. "That's fair. It seems this trail will diverge a while up the hike so we're stuck with each other until then." He said, with toothy smile.
"I remember the first time I went out hiking on my own. I ended up with a nasty sprained ankle, so yeah, it's good your not pushing it. Me on the other hand, I rarely learn from my mistakes." He said chuckling. "I'm ready to make it up to Altos Canyon. Maybe sleep underneath those fucking stars, man." He said, trying to see the sky through the canopy of trees. He slapped at a mosquito on his neck.
"Dammit, how'd I forget the bug spray." He said, annoyed.
"Hold up!" Samantha quickly stopped and knelled down on the ground. She flung her back over her shoulders to start digging. Luck had it that the bug spray was right near the top. She tossed the bottle over to him before putting her bag back on and catching back up to him. "You'll get eaten alive if you aren't careful." Sam said with a light chuckle.
"Ya know, if I had a bit more experience I might join you on your journey up the mountain, it sounds amazing. I just don't want to end up like you did when you pushed yourself." Out of the blue she stumbles over a root that she didn't see in her path. She is able to catch herself, but not before stumbling a few feet forward. "See, I haven't been out here five minutes and I'm already almost hurting myself!" She jokingly smiled.
He caught the bug spray and generously sprayed some on himself. "Yeah, no kidding. And it's the deep woods kind, you are a savior." He said, trying to hand it back as she tripped on a root. He tried to do something but she had righted herself.
"I see what you mean." He chuckled. "It's alright, maybe I'll join you tomorrow if you're up for another hike?" There was a low rumbling in the distance, that made him raise an eyebrow. "Did that sound like thunder to you?" He asked.
She nabbed the bug spray back from him and put in one of the side pockets meant for water bottles. They would probably need more of it so she figured she might as well keep it out.
"It would be nice to have some company out on the trail." Samantha smiled, but it quickly turned to a look of confusion as she heard the same low rumble off in the distance. "I didn't think it was supposed to rain this week?" She turned to Hector with a slight bit of concern, "Do you think that we should head back to camp just to be safe?"
