Heroes
“I’ll be the watcher of the eternal flame, I’ll be the guard dog of all your fever dreams!"
So, I’m not really into Marvel/DC, or any of that, if I’m honest. I used to be a Batman fan because, well, my mother was (I get all my geek tendencies from her). She also loves Deadpool. Go figure, eh?
Anyway, I have recently gotten into the idea of Hero RPs, but not huge organizations like the X-Men, the Justice League, or things like that. I don’t want the idea of “heroes” to be known, but something new in a world. I’m looking at Big Hero 6 here as inspiration, as well as the Choices phone game “Hero”, the movie Unbreakable, and what I understood of Batman when I was young. Normal people, living every day lives, stumble upon heroism.
How?
Well, that’s what the tabs are for, but I’m figuring either there’s a freak accident that grants powers, or there’s a need, and regular people find ways to make themselves “super”. Either way, we’d be focusing on the starting out of these characters, how they develop their identity, and how they use that identity while also trying to live a normal life.
1. Don't God-Mod. In other words, don't make my character speak, don't make my character, don't make my character take damage, and don't control my character. If you want something to go a certain way for plot purposes, just PM me and ask. Usually, I accept "god-modding" during travel and the like. It is usually acceptable to assume movement if a character is already committed to the journey.
2. Please be able to play both genders, and play multiple roles. Your main character(s) may be just male or just female, but I expect all the side characters and NPCs to have life and flavor, too.
3. On the note of characters: I will always play one female character. So, be aware of that. With that said, I usually also always play one male character, and I do MxM, MxF, and FxF pairings, though I prefer MxF.
4. I only RP on threads, (or GDocs in rare cases), so no PM, kik, discord, e-mail, or other rps with me. So that I know you’ve read the rules this far, please tell me about your favorite food!
5. Please be able to write more than a couple of sentences as responses to me. I have tried to do “simple” RPs, but I end up not feeling motivated to respond or continue the RP. I will need you to be able to write a paragraph or two, each post, at least.
6. PM if you are interested. The only reason for you not to PM me is if you cannot do so due to the fact you haven't reached 24 hours/10 posts.
Guidelines:
1. I do not like to be hassled for posts. Especially if I have already posted that day or the day before. Do not bother me for posts until at least two days have passed. Otherwise, I will start to resent our RP and lose interest in it.
2. I enjoy OOC talk, however I will not respond to "hi" or "-poke-" or equivalents. Have substance to the chatter, even if it just asking "How are you?".
3. Do not bump our thread if I have not posted. I will not post out of spite. I have a problem with this, I acknowledge it, I'm not fixing it.
4. On that matter, please keep OOC to PMs and not on our IC thread. IC is for posting. If you have a question, concern, or comment, just shoot me a PM.
5. In general, I do not enjoy immediate romances or "slice-of-life" RPs, so do not come to me expecting I'll do either. I may make rare exceptions.
In a nutshell, something happens, and superpowers are “given” to those involved. This could range from many things, and I’ll list a few possibilities we could mix and match below, but regardless, most of the people involved aren’t expecting to be given superpowers because of it.
1. A major corporation is hosting an event of some sort, where they show off their latest creations. One of these creations could be a portal, a reconstructive medicine, or something of the sort. Whatever the case, on showing it off, something goes wrong, and those within the radius end up also inheriting superpower(s).
2. There’s a crash on the road, and a truck carrying sensitive items wrecks. Those involved in the crash end up also being tainted by what the truck is carrying, and so “blessed” with superpower(s).
3. Meteor crash, radius of it, etc., haha.
4. ??? – Give me your ideas. Just nothing that says “the powers were there all along” or “genetics”. Powers are intended to be a wholly new thing in the world.
Anyway, with the powers acquired, at first there would probably be no chaos. No villains. Of course, as people discover they have powers, some are naturally going to start using them for evil. The good guys can step up then.
I don’t want the enhanced villains to end up being the major villain, though. I want it to be someone who perhaps set all of this in motion. Perhaps the owner of the corporation, perhaps the literal truck driver – or if not a person who set it in motion (meteor) someone who is working on using it to their own gain. Perhaps they’ve captured a few of those affected and are trying to mass produce whatever makes these people super? Perhaps they’re building an army?
I want it to be someone in the background at first, someone who may even appear benevolent or good – someone also with a normal guise, and who may indeed be normal, not touched by powers (or maybe they are), but someone definitely pulling the strings for some reason.
The world has gone to shit, probably.
Think Big Hero 6 for this, or maybe Kickass (I haven’t seen it). A city is basically overtaken by corruption, be it gangs or just a militant cop organization who feels the need to keep others down – and they have ways of doing it. Perhaps it is superior tech, superior weapons, or something, but they’re able to do as they please.
Someone is finally not taking it anymore. Or rather, a group of someones, who somehow unite. Knowing the risk of standing up and being recognized, they of course don ridiculous outfits, and go out to try and deal with the situation themselves.
Maybe they’re filthy rich and buy all they need?
Or maybe one of them builds a fucking robot and destroys the competition?
Perhaps one is a musician who’s able to manipulate their instrument to use and channel soundwaves however they want?
Or maybe someone is really just a star athlete that seems superhuman, and they just punch people in the face or run circles around them?
Be creative – this can go a bit beyond the realm of the norm, but none of these are actual “powers”, just people fed up and putting their talents to use.
Obviously, they’ll be both celebrated as heroes, and reviled as vigilantes. People will be trying to identify them as they start to bring order back, either to thank them, or to destroy them. We could potentially go the route of involving actual superpowers later, but at the outset, just people fed up and trying to do something about it.
