Death is no excuse for disobedience
Setting
It is noon and most townspeople are at their jobs or have the day off. The town is still shaken by the death of Leena whose funeral was only 3 weeks ago, closed casket because of the state her body was found in. The townspeople are all suspicious of who in the town in the werewolf that killed her and tensions are high between the Lunar and Jericho pack since they know it was the Jericho Alpha who killed her. At 5pm there will be a masquerade festival celebrating the arrival of more werewolf hunters. Orchestrated by the church, the theme of the festival is wolves to remind the town to be weary of each other. There will be a bonfire, drinking and dancing.

Erik had sold a good amount of meat during the morning mostly from people who were planning on having a big dinner before the festival and some was to the church who would be providing food for the town that evening. He stood behind the meat counter and stared out the window as he contemplated how the evenings festivities would play out. Most likely the Lunar pack members would either want to avoid or confront him over Leenas death. He didn’t entirely blame them though she was very popular and was friendly with everyone she came in contact with. If it had been another wolf he would have killed them for hurting her.
W e should’ve been mates...Leena why did you force my hand? You seemed so ready to become one of us. His regrets swirled in his head. She had spoke about how she longed for freedom and more power and he felt sure she would be willing to become a werewolf. She had told him that she’d secretly always wanted to meet a werewolf but as soon as he revealed himself she called him a monster and said she wanted him dead. His emotions had gotten the better of him and he’d honestly believed that even if she didn’t want to become one of them that their love would be strong enough for her to at least be willing to keep his secret. Now he realized his mistake and even though he was angry with her he still couldn’t bring himself to hate her. He reached up and gently touched his eyepatch. At least now in some strange way Leena you’ll always be with me, even if it isn’t the way I wanted you to be.

Lily stood outside the flower shop organizing her flowers. She’d sold a few that morning to the women in town who wanted some to wear in their hair or on their hats for the festival but other than that the day had been slow, the last time she’d sold a large amount of flowers in one day it was for Leenas funeral. She used to come by the shop regularly to pick up flowers for her mom, Lily didn’t know her very well but she was always sweet and friendly with her. She finished hanging some baskets and misting the flowers that needed it before heading inside to sit behind the counter. Her mask for the festival tonight sat under it on a small shelf. Lily picked it up and held it in her hands her mother gave it to her that morning. It was porcelain white with tiny vines and flowers painted all over it.
It seems so strange they want us to dress up as wolves, why would people want to be reminded of the death that occurred not that long ago? She pondered the ethics of the church. This festival was one of two things an excuse to party and drink and the church trying to remind the town to be scared of the wolves. It was strange to her. Of course the death was awful but the wolves were also pet human and there hadn’t been a townsperson murder since she was young usually it was hunters that ventured into the woods where they were told not to go. Even then she’d heard stories of the black wolf and others confronting the hunters and telling them to turn back so most of them were warned. Poor Leena what happened to you? Why did they kill you? She wished the others in town would investigate this as a murder and try to solve the reason why she was killed rather than just turn it into a werewolf hunt. It could’ve easily been just one werewolf why were the others going to be hunted as well. She sat back in her chair and looked at the clock on the wall. In 30 minutes she’d be heading off to her lunch break but for now she’s stay in the store in case anyone came in.
