Lilliana2

Death is no excuse for disobedience
Setting

It is noon and most townspeople are at their jobs or have the day off. The town is still shaken by the death of Leena whose funeral was only 3 weeks ago, closed casket because of the state her body was found in. The townspeople are all suspicious of who in the town in the werewolf that killed her and tensions are high between the Lunar and Jericho pack since they know it was the Jericho Alpha who killed her. At 5pm there will be a masquerade festival celebrating the arrival of more werewolf hunters. Orchestrated by the church, the theme of the festival is wolves to remind the town to be weary of each other. There will be a bonfire, drinking and dancing.

Erik had sold a good amount of meat during the morning mostly from people who were planning on having a big dinner before the festival and some was to the church who would be providing food for the town that evening. He stood behind the meat counter and stared out the window as he contemplated how the evenings festivities would play out. Most likely the Lunar pack members would either want to avoid or confront him over Leenas death. He didn’t entirely blame them though she was very popular and was friendly with everyone she came in contact with. If it had been another wolf he would have killed them for hurting her.

W e should’ve been mates...Leena why did you force my hand? You seemed so ready to become one of us. His regrets swirled in his head. She had spoke about how she longed for freedom and more power and he felt sure she would be willing to become a werewolf. She had told him that she’d secretly always wanted to meet a werewolf but as soon as he revealed himself she called him a monster and said she wanted him dead. His emotions had gotten the better of him and he’d honestly believed that even if she didn’t want to become one of them that their love would be strong enough for her to at least be willing to keep his secret. Now he realized his mistake and even though he was angry with her he still couldn’t bring himself to hate her. He reached up and gently touched his eyepatch. At least now in some strange way Leena you’ll always be with me, even if it isn’t the way I wanted you to be.

James had been riding for hours before he found the town.

He had been dispatched on an investigatory mission, some local apothecary had called in a 'werewolf mauling'. He knew a werewolf mauling when he saw one. All that doctor found was a chewed up vagrant corpse, the biggest thing that had taken a bite out of him was probably some bear.

He never liked this part of the country. The pagan rituals, the superstitious (even by his standards) locals...

But alas, here he was.

The clip-clop of hooves echoed throughout the streets as he made his way into the quaint little hamlet, his two hunting dogs faithfully trotting alongside him. People hurried out of his way, casting him only fearful glances. Mothers pulled their laughing children out of the streets. The men kept their eyes downcast, quickening their pace.

Not an unusual reaction when faced with a member of the Trinity Church, but still enough to make him raise an eyebrow behind his helmet.

He noticed someone who wasn't trying to escape his gaze. A girl, on the porch of some florists.

He dismounted his horse, tying it up to a nearby post. He approached the girl.

"You." He pointed. "My hounds require water, as does my horse. Fetch it for me."

The afternoon had gone by slowly. It felt like time was crawling, and Anil was already frustrated as he stood outside the butcher's shop with the list his mother had given him in hand. He did not want to go in there. He hated coming in here at the best of times, and always avoided the alpha of the rival pack as best as he could. But considering the situation lately, his mother wanted to stock up on provisions; hunting in the woods was dangerous, and it would be best to have a supply of salted meats in the cellar so they didn't have to transform unless necessary. It made sense, and he understood the decision.

He did not like it.

Giving business to the man who had caused this whole mess had Anil's back ramrod straight as he slowly pushed open the door to the shop. He had never actually met the Jericho alpha properly, only knowing him through rumor and occasionally passing by in town, but he disliked him already on principal alone. He had promised his mother he would be polite and civil, though, so he steeled himself and stepped inside.

His posture was stiff, and his mouth was twisted into an unpleasant frown, but he tried not to show his distaste on his face as he awkwardly marched up to the counter with his mother's coinpurse. He met eyes with the other werewolf, biting his lip to keep his emotions from getting the best of him.

Civil. He could be civil. He could be very, very civil.

"Venison," he said, his voice gruff as he dropped the purse on the table. "I want ten pounds. Please."

His lip twitched in the most pathetic attempt at a friendly smile that he could muster.

Business was slow. Elias had expected it, considering the mood over the town. People were scared, angry, and out for blood, and he wanted no part of it. His business was healing and helping people, whether those people occasionally had fur or not, and he hated the church's habit of occasional witch hunts. Still, this would likely blow over in time.

He hoped so, anyways. He didn't know too much about the local packs, but the Blanchett family were good people. He hoped that they, at least, got out of this unharmed. He'd have to find Anil before the party that night, to make sure he didn't blow his top and do something stupid. The kid was nice, and very dedicated, but he had a temper on him that wasn't easily cowed.

Elias couldn't help a fond smile as he finished up the prescription for the old woman who lived on the other side of town, twisting the cap onto the bottle and setting it aside. He was done preparing medicines for today, and all he had left to do was check out the herbs in the storefront. Anil usually sat at the counter for him in the afternoons, but he had to run errands for his mother today. Elias grimaced as he realized that sooner or later, he'd have to start paying him for his help. Getting to read the books in his private library wasn't going to be enough compensation for long.

Seth stood at his workbench as he set about fixing the string on his bow. It had come loose from his copious amounts of practice and he cursed himself for failing to maintain the weapon. Looking to his dwindling supply of arrows in his quiver, also, he sighed. He would have to locate the nearest blacksmith and purchase more arrowheads. The rest he could handle himself since he needed to coat said arrowheads in the various sedative poisons he was experimenting with. As he leant over the workbench, his blonde fringe drooped slightly

Using one hand to move the hair upwards, he grabbed the bow and an arrow with the other before spinning around and using both hands to send an arrow slicing through the air into a wall with deep indents littering it. A makeshift target had been constructed and the arrow landed dead in the centre. Pleased with the repairs, he donned the quiver and bow before tugging the arrow out of the wall and placing it with the others.

Seth was very much aware of recent events as it seemed all the entire town spoke about. The tragic murder reminded him of that night many years ago. It brought back the memory of older brother being torn limb from limb as a wolf tore him apart. He remembered Daxter's final words, too.

"Fight, Sethy. Keep fighting till the very end..."

Daxter's sad smile flashed in Seth's eyes as he watched his older brother kick the wolf with all his might and turn it away from Seth, allowing him to escape.

Unconsciously tracing the scar on his left eye, he clenched his jaw and shook his head to clear his thoughts before heading out into town- with only one thought on his mind.

'I will avenge you, brother.'

Hailey twirled after a very successful hunt. She snuck into town careful not to be seen by anyone so that no one would suspect her of being a werewolf. Once she was in town she pranced down the street towards the flower shop looking to buy some flower seeds for her window sill she wanted some daisies because they were her brother's favorite. As she neared the shop she noticed a newcomer or someone she thought was a newcomer seeing that she hadn't been I town fora while sick. She walked up to him "Hello how are you, dear sir." she said politely.

"You there, boy!" He flashed the ornate triangle on his jacket, a symbol of the Trinity Church.

"I know your look. A hunter?" He paid close attention to his armaments. A bow, primitive, if somewhat effective.

James payed little attention to the girl. "Mind your place, peasant." He sneered. "Do not fraternize with those above your station."

Lily was shocked when the man from the trinity church approached her. She’d heard of them before some people said they destroyed towns with their overzealous monster hunting pursuits, others claimed they were misunderstood heroes. Whether it was witch hunts, werewolf hunting or alleged demon exorcisms the trinity church had the people most capable of fixing the problem, her mother probably would’ve swooned over such a holy masculine man. While Lily found his appearance and tone of voice a bit jarring she wasn’t particularly scared. She had no real reason to fear a monster hunter.

”Of course.” she replied simply to his request for water for his horse and hounds. Lily walked to the back and filled two buckets of water. He must be here to hunt the werewolves, but who called for him? We already have werewolf hunters why get the trinity church involved. She thought about the danger of having someone from such a dangerous group in the town as she carried the buckets through her store. On her way out she also put a few dog biscuits in her apron pocket and grabbed a small bucket of oats for the horse. She walked passed him as he spoke to Seth and Hailey. She could tell Hailey had never interacted with a member of the trinity church by her nonchalant tone. The man quickly reprimanded her words. She gave Seth a nervous glance as she passed him and approached the horse, hopefully his interaction with the man would be better than Haileys. She set the water bucket and the bucket of oats in front of the horse and then walked towards the hounds and set down their water. She turned to face Hailey.

”Hailey if you’re here for flowers I can meet you inside I won’t be out here long.” She was a bit out of breath from carrying the buckets, it wasn’t hard work but her physical ailments loved making her life a bit more challenging. She hoped the girl took her invitation to avoid any more interaction with the hunter. Her friendly casual tone of voice was gone and had been replaced by a professional inviting tone. Newcomers might not have noticed it but it would be obvious to anyone she spoke to regularly. She reached in her apron pocket and pulled out the dog biscuits one for each hound and approached the man ”It’s an honor to help someone from the trinity church, I’ve never met anyone aligned with them before but my mother has told me of their accomplishments. Your horse and hounds have water and your horse has some oats as well.” she held the treats out towards the man ”I have some treats for your hounds as well if they can have some. If you need anything else I’d be happy to help.” She didn’t agree with the church’s opinions on werewolves and a part of her worried for the rest of the town’s members but for now the best she could do was be hospitable and hope that he didn’t find anything or anyone to be suspicious of.

"I am indeed a hunter. Though, perhaps not to the extent of a member of the Trinity Church." Seth closed his eyes and ignored the man as he flashed his symbol. He cared little for establishments such as the Trinity Church, considering their beliefs to be misguided and incredibly harmful to those they seek to protect. He hunted the beasts for his reasons and his reasons alone. Seth had feared that the news of the death of Leena's death would bring people such as this to the town.

"And I implore you, show the townfolk respect. It is the death of someone close to them that brought you here after all, is it not?" Seth opened his eyes and met Lily's glance with an apologetic one of his own. "I shall see you at the masquerade festival." He bid the man goodbye.

"Thank you for your service, fair maiden. I do hope you are not overworking yourself with those water buckets." Seth turned to leave when he decided to ask the girl whether there was a blacksmith nearby. "I say, might you know where the nearest Blacksmith would be? I'm afraid I only moved into this town recently and require some more arrows if I am to hunt down the creature that killed poor Leena."

James tilts his head at his fellow hunters words, forgetting the disrespect, at least for the time being.

"Wolves, here?" He murmured, more to himself than anyone else.

"Perhaps this will not be a wasted hunt after all..."

Anil watched the opposing alpha like a hawk, his back straight. He frowned at the gift, his eyes narrowing.

It was meant to be kind, the rational voice in his mind said. It was not an insult, but still. He felt like he was being belittled.

"I will pay for it," he said sternly. "I have the money for it, and I insist. It is not proper to rely on the kindness of others when I am perfectly able to pay my own way."

He was trying not to be rude, because his mother would be so upset if he started a fight. He wasn't even trying to start a fight, really. He just-- it was strange, being in a room with somebody who had such an opposing ideology to him, doing business with them. A large part of him wanted to go on a tirade about how the alpha's morals were wrong, but the (quite small) rational part of his mind told him that doing such would have no point.

Also he had kind of expected the other man to be big and gruff and rude. His friendliness and kindness had thrown Anil off guard, and he wasn't quite sure how to react to that.

It was always easier in his head, where good and bad were clear cut lines with solid edges.

He squinted slightly at the other man, then bit down on his lower lip as he took the meat. If he insisted on being nice, then maybe...

"My friend. He, erm, he owns the apothecary. I could get you something, uh. For your eye. For the meat. I mean. It looks like it hurts."

He was awkward, and he hated it.

Elias hummed as he finished straightening up the herbs lining the window in the storefront, taking the chance to glance out over the main street. It was quite busy today, it seemed. The girl from the flower shop was outside with a couple of newcomers. Hunters, maybe? Word spread around fast, it seemed. He shoved his hands into his back pockets, watching for a moment before he decided to head out himself. Lily and Hailey were nice girls, but they were also just girls, and hunters tended to be rowdy folks. It would help to have somebody who knew his way around a drunken brawl fight around, just in case.

"Hello, Lily," he said with a wave as he locked the door to the shop, figuring he'd have no more business for the afternoon anyways. "How's business? You seem to have attracted a couple of travelers with your flowers."

He couldn't help but smile. Like bees. Very dangerous bees, but the image of the two men decked in black and yellow made him chuckle nonetheless.

"Are you two together, by any chance?" he asked, eying the two. "I have a discount on salves for hunters, seeing how dangerous your line of work is, if you need it."

Elie walked calmly down the road, her hands tucked snugly in her pockets. Her platinum blonde hair shone brightly in the sun, with her emerald eyes flashing to and fro as she took in everything surrounding her. Perhaps it wasn't the safest to just stroll into a town filled with hunters and werewolf-hating humans, but she was tired of spending her time stuck up in some cabin. She couldn't hunt as much as she pleased because townsfolk would notice.

She passes a flowers shop, noticing a girl with a couple of Hunters. Her nostrils flare the smallest bit as she takes in their scent. Yep. Hunters all right. She vears around them to avoid drawing any attention to herself. Soon, however, her stomach is growling and the tantilizing smell of the meat from the butcher's shop draws her. Elie begins heading that direction.
