— VISAGE.
Hair:
Black
Eyes:
Greyish-blue
Skin:
Valerian's skin is normally a shockingly pale color, almost unhealthily so.
Height:
5'7"
Weight:
160 lbs
Distinguishing features:
Valerian's features are rather sharp and hawk-like, and he seems to phase in and out very occasionally; and his lower jaw is a bit terrifying to look at; the skin refuses to grow properly there, and is often a patchwork of visible flesh and scarred skin.
Wardrobe:
Valerian likes going for what he calls a 'practical gothic' look- he oftentimes wears the flowing, black (really, dark grey.) colors of said subculture, but he keeps the flowiness to a reasonable level, as he also enjoys practicality. And have you tried running around in a gothic coat that extends below the knees? It sucks. So, any piece of clothing that is dark (black, preferably.), elegant, and practical will claim his attention. He also wears a black scarf, to cover up his disfigured lower face.
Face claim: (encouraged. real only.)

— PERSONA.
Personality:
Valerian is a weird mix between friendly and distant, social and anti-social, rebellious and obedient. But he loves paradoxes... Anyways. Covering the first topic: Friendly and distant. ...And social/anti-social. Valerian is normally very shy around people he firsts meet; give him around a couple of hours, and he warms up to people, enough to be happily chatting away about the standard nerdy things, and not really much else. But bring up sports, actors, or world news, and he gives you a blank stare. He generally dislikes a large crowd, but if enough people that he knows are with him, he can stay active and chatty for around a couple of hours- beyond that, he withdraws and becomes quiet, largely unresponsive, and almost sullen.
Concerning his obedient/rebellious paradox, first off, let it be known that Valerian doesn't care about government in general. In fact, he supports some government, as he understands that anarchy is a bad thing. He just dislikes a big, ever encompassing government that dictates what everyone can do. And monopolies that can treat people however they want because they have a choke-hold on a precious object that people need. He doesn't fight against every order that's given to him, just those that he feels are either useless or actually destructive to others. He very closely follows Hobbes' and Locke's belief that all people are equal. As such, he tends to despise people who think they're better than others. This also inspires him to help out others, because since others are his equals, everyone should therefore have an equal chance at a good life like him, and therefore, he will help others.
Alignment:
Valerian is a superhero, having attended the Audax Corde Academy for four years, almost as soon as he left high school. He's a bit rebellious, but he prefers not killing people, and trying to ensure people don't get hurt. Valerian can best be described as Neutral Good, leaning towards Chaotic Good.
Positive traits (4+):
Do-gooder: He's very helpful when he wants to be; he loves seeing people smile, and hates to see people get hurt directly.
Brainiac: Well, kind of expected. He's an excellent hacker, coder, and even video gamer. He enjoys these kinds things.
Laid-back: Valerian is, most of the time, uncaring of things that trouble him. Setback to a plan? Doesn't really rattle him, he just wings it. Call him a name? He laughs back, and comes up with a retort.
Creative: Valerian has a particular creative streak, whether it be in art, music, or other things he shows an interest in.
Good Cook: Surprisingly. One of the few things that Valerian takes seriously. He's an excellent cook- if a little creative. He's particularly good at making cheesecakes, but he's still very good at making mostly everything else.
Negative traits (4+):
Rebellious: Valerian is very against status-quo. Well... not fanatic extremist, but he is generally suspicious when a big-time corporation or the government is running the show.
Social Idiocy: Valerian may like helping people, but he's got the social awareness of a brick. He generally is unaware when he's overstayed his welcome, when he's done something to offend someone, or the like, unless he really tries and focuses to pay attention to such details.
Stress Factors: Valerian may be laid back most of the time, but when you do find things that can get underneath his skin, he can get stressed easily. Such triggers include, but are not limited to: large crowds, big competitions, cut off from resources (i.e technology.), and spiders.
Selected interests: Not many things interest Valerian. Science and math topics always interest him, but sports, governmental news, fashion, and other such things he is largely uninterested in. As such, expect him to have a largely blank, disinterested face when discussing such topics.
Shy and introverted: Not terrible, but Valerian is shy enough to where large crowds and parties tend to freak him out, or, if with people he knows, tires him out after a few hours. He can generally do well with up to six people at a time, more or less, but he still likes his alone time.
Not serious: Valerian seems to face everything as if it was a joke or a game to him. In all actuality? Yes, while he does see many things like a game, there are plenty of things he takes seriously. But no matter what, he keeps up a devil may care attitude about nearly most things in the world.
Likes (4+):
Geeky things- VIDDEEEOOO GAAAMEEES! ...and board games, and card games, and strategy games; he also likes reading, mostly in the fantasy and sci-fi category; furthermore, he enjoys watching documentaries, though he prefers funny ones such as Mythbusters of old and the like; Valerian also enjoys comics- Japanese anime or Western Superhero comics, Valerian will read... Yeah, Valerian's a real nerd. Yes, sword fighting counts as one of these.
Cooking- Kind of obvious, since he's very good at it. But he really enjoys making food.
Climbing: Valerian enjoys doing this. As such, it translates into his parkour and rock climbing skills.
Coffee- He's an addict. Especially if you add honey. It's not uncommon for him to drink coffee for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in addition to just after waking up, and sometimes even before he goes to bed.
Dislikes (4+):
Boredom- His bane in life, Valerian constantly needs to do things to distract his thoughts.
Big corporations- Valerian really doesn't like huge monopolies; they oftentimes do whatever they want to their customers, simply because they can without any repercussions.
Chocolate- Surprised? While Valerian can cook with chocolate, he doesn't particularly like the taste of chocolate.
Insects- Valerian hates the little buggers. Annoying, tiny, hard to get rid of...
Stuffy people- Valerian doesn't like people who are wound up, arrogant, and generally snappish. They should really learn to calm down.
Fears:
Spiders- Valerian hates them. Well, he hates insects in general. But spiders, he's deathly afraid of. Eight eyes? Shudder.
Isolation- Despite liking his alone time, Valerian is actually scared of what would happen if he was left alone for...well, forever. Or a time seeming like that. He especially is scared when people find out about his face.
Large crowds- However, Valerian is also scared of getting in the middle of a huge crowd. It's easy to get lost in a crowd.
Government control- Valerian likes his privacy and his freedoms. Valerian is honestly afraid that the government is like 1984.
Ailments:
Valerian has a number of ailments.... well, three specifically. First, and most serious, is his 'glitching' problem. Whenever he overexerts his powers in a short time, he starts blipping in and out (Think Menelopie from Wreck It Ralph.) of reality. Secondly, his lower jaw is pretty messed up. He has to be a bit careful around alcohol because of that, for one thing. Thirdly, he's an insomniac. Not terribly so, but he has a habit of not being able to sleep at night, and spending most of his mornings making up that lost sleep.
— ABILITIES.
Power:
Data Manipulation:
Valerian can manipulate the data that makes up most of technology. Not the hardware, but the software. He can also create such data, though he still needs a source to draw from from time to time. Things that Valerian can do: Convert himself into data/radio waves- he can maintain it for quite a while if he's inside a computer, tablet, or other software; if he's trying to do it outside of such software, he can only do it for short bursts. Valerian can bring up masses of data from his fingertips, and show it like a holographic display screen. He can also create constructs and 'propel' himself with this data- he can't fly, per se, but he can glide pretty far. He also uses to make things, like his signature sword, walls of data- force fields, if you want to get technical, and temporary walkways- though he needs to attach said walkways to a solid object.
Strengths:
Selected athletics: Valerian is athletic- not super athletic, but he's good enough where he can do his beloved parkour and sword fighting.
Hand-eye Coordination: What comes from being both a video gamer and a competent athlete, Valerian is good at things that catch his interest- I.E shooting guns- confined to pistols- sword fighting, parkour, rock climbing, and the like.
Versatility: Valerian is extremely versatile with his given powers and interests, as they allow him to travel quickly, sneak into areas, fight, and generally do many things well.
Weaknesses:
Limited: Valerian can only do his powers for a limited amount of time and/or uses; he has two limits. The first, and most notable one, is that when he uses too much of his powers in too short of a time, he tends to glitch in and out- such episodes are extremely painful, though he hides the pain well, and normally he can't do anything while having such episodes. His second limit is more of an endurance/power supply limit- he has to recharge his supply of..data? Electricity? Either way, he has to take a moment by something electronic, and siphon off it's power, to power his own powers. Say THAT five times fast. When comparing his limits, the second, endurance based limit is a vastly larger reservoir when compared to his first limit- but he can still be ground out of juice. First limit I will call overload, and second I will call supply.
Solid Base: For most of powers, Valerian needs a physical object to connect it to, whether it be a wall, the ground, or himself. He can't just make a platform in mid-air, or a force field in floating above the ground. Even when shooting his data swords, Valerian forms it by tendrils of data connected to his body first, before firing it off.
Short-out: High blasts of energy- think EMPs- can short out his data constructs. If someone shorts out a computer he is in, he is forcibly ejected, not to mention overloaded.
— HISTORY.
Relationships (family, friends, dating, etc):
Julius and Allie Dominal: Valerian's parents. Still alive, thankfully, though his mother has cancer and has gone through multiple chemo-therapies, trying to chase down the cancer cells. Julius Dominal is a banker; the family used to be rich, until all the treatments.
Merriam Tallow and Nyah Smithson: Valerian's best friends. Nyah is a cripple in both of her legs, and Merriam is a essentially a street rat, or at least a common laborer. But Valerian often finds time to try and visit the two.
Hayson Keyes: The one person Valerian hates with a passion. It's because of him that Nyah is crippled. He betrayed Valerian, Merriam, and Nyah, and Valerian won't forget that.
Background:
Valerian was born in Atlanta, Georgia, near Christmas time, barely a few months after his parents got married. As such, they considered him a Christmas gift; you don't want to hear all the time they spent doting on him for the first few years. Then, after those four years, rumors started coming. Disasters started happening; riots, unexplained chaos, and word that people started developing superpowers! Valerian's parents wanted to quietly endure the storm of this event so called the Change, but unfortunately, it was also during that time that Valerian got sick. Very sick- sickle cell disease. It got so bad, that the Dominals weren't sure if Valerian was going to make it or not. After some time going to different doctors, trying to find a permanent way to cure his autoimmune disease. Eventually, they had to settle for a blood transfusion- a temporary solution at best. And at that point, Valerian's parents were convinced that he was going to spend his life chained to an IV tube.
But then, something amazing happened. After receiving his first IV transfusion, Valerian started to actually perk up- and in a more permanent fashion, not the expected temporary results. Doctors of course looked into this, tried to find out how this happened. Unfortunately, the donor who gave the blood died in the chaos of... whatever the event was. Valerian really doesn't know who gave him the blood still, only that he has a sneaking suspicion that the man developed powers during this time, and that helped Valerian develop his own powers. But, moving along, Valerian's life started moving swimmingly along- with his original sickness was gone, Valerian could finally start having a normal childhood, right? Well, he did have that, for two more years. Then, at the age of six, he started displaying.... anomalies. Computers around him would turn on and off, and glitch out. TVs would static in and out. Even laser pointers would get wonky around him. It didn't take long for the family to find out that Valerian was also affected by the Change. Only slightly distraught, Allie and Julius attempted to get Valerian a tutor, a place where to control his powers, anything. They didn't try too hard, not that it was really feasible- The Change was only recent, and not many people had learned to control their own powers, let alone teach others how to control theirs. So, why waste the effort? Most of their attempts at teaching Valerian mostly went into homemade self-control lessons.
Of course, that all changed. Another change, so quickly. Another sign of 'sickness'- They discovered Valerian's 'glitch-outs.' Now, they were very distressed. What was once just a cursory look for aid became a full-fledged search for someone to help Valerian. Doctors, Powered people who seemed more experienced, scientists... Valerian's parents tried it all. This eventually turned into a hodgepodge of training; two years of such 'training.' It was enough to prevent Valerian from glitching out every other minute. They then tried to keep Valerian in school for one more year, before eventually deciding to pull him out for a prep school that supposedly catered to powered people.
It was also around this time that Valerian made a few of friends- Merriam Tallow, Hayson Keyes, and Nyah Smithson. They were fairly normal people, really- a bit on the poor side, slightly rebellious, slightly nerdy, but they actually made the attempt to be friends with him. It was honestly a happy change for Valerian- people who were interested in the same things as him, and actually willing to play with him- unlike so many other people in elementary school.
So, at the age of eleven, Valerian went to Exousia School. At this time, Valerian was used to the way people would ask him about his powers, and even the slight bullying. He didn't mind- his powers made playing video games fun. However, at this school, Valerian got the opposite effect- people nearly flat out ignored him. It was slightly.. disconcerting, but Valerian learned to deal with it. After all, he still had Merriam, Hayson, and Nyah to play with. His life at the school was full of rigorous courses designed to improve not only regular education, but also Powered abilities (At least, what little it could.). But only a few years after he started attending the school, complications happened.
First off, people at the school found out his association with Merriam, Hayson, and Nyah. And they looked down on all four because of it. These kids were the elite- they were the powered, the rich, the influential. One of them was friends with lower class? Valerian reacted very poorly to this- he got into frequent fist fights at school over snobbish remarks made over his friends. Then came his mother's Cancer diagnosis. Of course Valerian was heartbroken- his mother was sick! But the usual medical aid they went to had been bought up by a big time medical firm- and they jacked up the prices of the chemo-therapy. The family was able to pay, but it nearly ruined them to do so; in fact, Julius was worried that Valerian wouldn't be able to go to the Exousia School anymore. Of course, Julius decided he couldn't let that happen, and started working overtime. So much so, that Valerian barely stated to see him anymore. Valerian still resents that medical firm to this day for what he considers a gross abuse of marketing and business maneuvering.
It was also around this time that Merriam, Hayson, and Nyah began sneaking around, generally vandalizing another corporation, this one video based. All of their parents were working as laborers in said corporation, and they suspected labor worker abuse, in addition to other nasty secrets. So, they managed to form a little group, and began investigating and generally aggravating this corporation. It led to many late night heists and events, many talks from Julius and crying from Allie, and many close calls, but Valerian didn't care. He was going to bring down an evil company- even if it wasn't the medical firm, it was still a big company, and maybe that could help him with the medical firm.
This continued until Valerian was sixteen. Then came the fiasco which changed it all. Valerian doesn't like talking about that event much; however, it is known that during that event, Hayson ratted out the other three when they were attempting to expose on of the corporation's many shady operations, the corporation security got involved, Nyah was crippled in an accident, and Merriam and Valerian only barely managed to get out of being arrested by some serious blackmailing. Needless to say, the company then shut down the operation and removed all trace of it; but they couldn't arrest Valerian and Merriam without exposing it, so it was a stalemate between the two groups. However, it was this event that led to Hayson being essentially reviled among the three, and the three quitting their escapades- Nyah very well couldn't do it anymore, and Merriam decided to try and work to support Nyah. Valerian wanted to as well, but Merriam insisted that that Valerian focus on his Powered studies, saying that he could show the world what was going on if he went public.
Three years later, and Valerian- now an all-A student, with a near spotless record- got invited to the Audax Corde Academy; Something only four other students in his school managed to receive as well, much to the other's mortification and Valerian's satisfaction. Valerian largely spent most of his time in the academy increasing his stamina, both for his overload limit and his supply. He worked throughout the entire four years, and graduated near the top of his class- again, largely by dint of hard work.
