Heavy rain poured into the crumbled, once lively city, causing a layer of mist to form, creating a uncanny, humid atmosphere. There was hardly any trace of life. Thick mud covered the ground, with occasional fractions of the once sky-touching structures embedded into the mud. Dead trees roots penetrated and mangled through some crumbled buildings. With each passing second, the rain grew harsher, pounding on every solid object. The mist grew thicker as well. Aided by the pollution, the wet mist appeared to be a slight dark green.

Johanna's boots splashed in a puddle of rain, soaking her socks, which now stuck to her feet. The old boots were falling apart; she had taken them off one of the dead bodies after the gas started killing people off. Almost every living thing on Earth died from the exposure, but Johanna miraculously did not. Due to her autism, she was used to being different from other people; however, what she was not used to was being better off than others. Johanna slipped her arms out of her coat and held the thick material over her head to block the pounding rain as she ran into an abandoned department store, rain water splashing inside before she could pull the unhinged door closed behind her. It hung limply, barely barricading her in. Johanna spotted a dark green mist wafting toward the store, looking ready to expand around the walls and swallow the building whole. Johanna covered her mouth with the coat and looked around for something to better barricade the entrance. Her eyes landed on the furniture section of the store, where she spotted a large brown couch. Tying the coat sleeves securely around her head, she pushed the coat down just below her eyes so it only covered her nose and mouth, and she strided toward the couch.

Sim stuck to the shadows of the city, it kept him hidden from god knows what was prowling about out there, although it seemed like he was alone you just couldn't be too sure those days. The mist that hovered above the ground was toxic and polluted, just like everything else on the planet. Sim had tied a black bandanna around his mouth and nose to protect his respiratory system from the noxious fumes in the air, but that only protects so well. A while back he had been in a group of survivors, one of which had his own gas mask the man with the mask later tried to kill everyone in the group, he almost succeeded with that, only Sim and a little girl who he had already forgotten the name of got away. That little girl ended up dying from the gas just a short while afterwards.

Rain had begun to fall as Allister walked along the once busy freeway that led into the city. There were still cars upon it, many in fact, but these cars did not move, they sat motionless upon the battered road; it was like a bleak painting, blurred, dark and still. As the rain grew in intensity Allister's view dwindled. Looking on ahead of him he could only see some twenty feet or so, from there his sight was blocked by a tainted green mist that rose up high and seemed to slowly in-case him. Allister reached back and flipped up his hood, for the time being it was his best escape from the cold rain. Around his neck hung a green bandanna, he pulled it up over his mouth and nose, a very small protection - though his only - from the tainted mist.

Allister continued on, making slow progress towards the city, the tall buildings he had seen much earlier on in the distance were no longer visible. As he walked he began to check the cars he passed, hoping to find one that might be a more permanent escape from the rain and mist. It took him some twenty minutes before finally finding one that had all of its windows intact, it was a worn looking white SUV. Allister climbed in and shut the door behind him, inside the SUV it was dry, and though it wasn't really warm, it was much better than being out in the rain.

Emilie

Emilie sat under a bridge on the highway, putting on a third medical mask as the fog got denser. She had no where currently to stay dry and away from the gases that gathered outsides. She moved around, the tips of her long hair getting soaked from the wet ground she sat on. "Shit." she mumbled, trying to find something on her to tie her hair up. She however gave up a decided to get a move on. The rain didnt look like it was going to end soon. The red head stood up, the rain almost immediately drenching her. She held a hand over the deep scratch on her arm, hoping to give it the best protection she had. There was no way she was going to die from a small cut. No way no how.

About 10 minutes later Emilie was by a white SUV. It was unlocked and not broken at all. In fact it seemed like a good place to hang out, waiting for the rain to stop. Emilie pulled out her glock from her jean waist band and help it up, just incase. She slowly reached up and grabbing the the tail gate door handle. "one... two... three." the girl counted off quickly opening t and jumping into the back. She quickly slammed it back shut and sat down on the floor closing her eyes. "Jesus christ." She mumbled, letting her guard down. She then opened her eyes and looked around to only notice another person in the car. Emilie squeaked and pressed her back against the car. She brought her gun up, her hands shaking slightly. She hadnt seen another human in almost 3 months. "A-are you alive?" She whispered, still holding up the gun.

Allister was sitting in his new found sanctuary glad to be out of the cold rain, and far more glad to be out of the deadly mist, when he heard what sounded like a series of steps on the wet pavement outside. The mist was thick and the windows of the SUV were fogged and wet, he couldn't see a thing. Not sure who, or what for that matter, might be lurking outside Allister did his best to remain completely quiet and still. The sound continued, definitely steps he thought listening intently. The sound came closer, closer, closer, and then it stopped. There was a silence, save for the sound of the rain.

Suddenly with a loud crash and clank the trunk flew open and something flew in, the trunk abruptly slamming shut behind it. Allister froze thinking for a moment that his short life was about to come to an even shorter end. That was until he realized that the "it" was actually a "she". There was a moment of relief; but it was a very short moment because in no time at all the girl produced a gun which she nervously pointed at Allister.

"A-are you alive?" She whispered. The question caught Allister slightly off guard, but only slightly, seeing as she was pointing a gun at him.

"Yes... and I'd like to keep it that way," he said in a confused scared sort of way as he slowly raised his hands. "I'm really not worth robbing, I don't have much of anything," he added, keeping his hands up.

Emilie

The red head looked the other boy up and down before relaxing. She pulled off her medical mask and threw them off to the side, running a hand through her hair trying to dry it slightly. "I dont rob people. Although, i cant say the same for you." Emilie glared at the other person, looking him up and down. She huffed out and flipped the gun in her hand. She lifted her hips and shoved it into her jeans waist band. "I have talked to another person in almost three months. I was making sure you werent a hallucination." She explained, looking away slightly. She stand silent for a few minutes before rolling her eyes and crawling forward. She held out her hand, her red bangs falling in her face. "Im Emilie. Or Em. Or Millie. Or Red. Or whatever the hell you want to call me." There was no way she was going to get on this guys bad side. She may have a gun but he probably had something she didnt know about. One wrong move and she could be dead. Plus she didnt want to leave the comfort of the car.

Johanna's muscles ached as she pushed and pulled on the couch, which turned out to be bolted down to the floor of the department store. One of the few advantages of autism was that it caused her to panic easily, giving her frequent adrenaline rushes. As the adrenaline pumped through her veins, Johanna could hear the bolts break beneath the couch, finally allowing her to push the furniture piece across the floor. She paused in her efforts, readjusting the coat that was around her head to better cover her nose and mouth. She could see the green mist approaching the store -- she needed to hurry. Placing her hands back on the couch, she pushed and walked as fast as she could. It was a good thing she was strong.

Once she finally had the couch situated in front of the door, propping the thin unhinged piece of glass up to block the entrance from the approaching smoke, she plopped down onto the couch to regain her breath in the aftermath of her adrenaline rush. Her head dropped into her lap; she was absolutely exhausted. Untying the coat from around her head, she pulled it over her body and, using it as a blanket, slowly drifted off to sleep.
