The day's first light broke over the tops of the mountains on the Island of Val.

A young woman's head appeared from beneath the surface of the bay. She looked around to spot the boat she'd come out on. Pulling herself back up onto the boat, she shook her head in reply to the questions from the boy on the boat. He shrugged and began to paddle the boat to another location as she twisted the salt water out of her hair.

The city of Vallingard was woken by the deep booming tones of massive bells to the East celebrating the arrival of the morning hours once again.

A young man asleep in a massive white plush bed finally opened his eyes. He yawned, rolled himself towards the edge of the mattress, and reached for a ring from the table beside his bed before throwing back the sheets.

A woman wiped the sweat and dust from her eyes and looked up at the still-rising sun. She went back to work digging the trench she'd been working on since before dawn and started to whistle a simple tune as she did so.

A knight covered head to toe in heavy armor stood silently as an impenetrable blizzard raged about him. He turned slowly and moved onward without leaving any sign of his passing.

An elf let loose an arrow over a stream running deep in the woods. The arrow dipped into the water and pierced the side of a fish. A bright orange dragonfly-like creature darted up the river to grab the arrow and fish in one motion and dart away between the trees on the other side of the river. The elf lowered his bow and nodded in respect before picking up his arrow from the day before and turning back the way he'd come.

Two elves lay together in embrace on the shores of the Feylake, one asleep, the other at peace listening to the gentle beatings of a heartbeat and the surf almost in sync. The morning sun warmed her back, but it would have to be more persistent to move the blitheful elves.

A human girl watched from a window of the tower as an elf practiced swinging his blade over and over again. He felt her watching, for he turned and gave the girl a bow before returning to his ritual. In return she only gave a gentle smile. An older male elf oversaw their exchange from atop the keep's outer wall. His fist clenched tighter, and he turned to watch outward.

A lone dwarf in his forge folded the heated steel before him for the hundredth time, showing no sign of nearing completion. So focused was he on his work that it was doubtful that he'd noticed that it was a new day.

Four massive smooth black stone walls enclosed a small grassy courtyard. The grass waved as if moved my a gentle wind, though no such wind should have existed inside the enclosed place. A single tree grew within the courtyard.

As the sun's light began to make its way down the inner wall of the courtyard it revealed a large circular pattern carved into the stone. Each of the other four walls had the same pattern. Another gust of wind filled the space.

Welcome to the world of Rhune

Cressida Alleva

Cressida woke up to the feeling of something cold around her right wrist. Her eyes opened to see the cieling above her, and that's when she decided to bring her hand up to see just what it was that was causing the cold. It was still a bit blurry without her glasses, so she sat up and grabbed them off the bedside table next to her. Cressida had just started college a few months ago, so she was still getting used to living on her own. It was almost too quiet to get used to. Putting on her glasses, she looked at her wrist again, her sight finally clear enough to see that a metal bangle was hanging there, one that definitely was not there before. A little concerned, she tried to take it off, only for it to refuse as if there was some kind of force keeping it on there. "Huuuh..?" She asked herself tiredly, taking off her glasses and cleaning it. Maybe her glasses were dirty and she wasn't seeing anything that was keeping it on there. "Such a weird morning.." she grumbled to herself, wiping off the glass sitting in the bright red frames. She liked how the glasses looked on her face; cleaning them, not so much. Placing the spectacles back on her head, she stared down at the bangle again, frowning to notice that it was just a plain silver bangle that just didn't seem to want to budge. "First that boy's voice from last night, now this? What's next?" She huffed, and almost as if on cue she noticed something else sitting on her bed, right next to where her wrist with the bangle was when she woke up. Picking it up, she stared at it, wondering what this thing would have been. It looked like some kind of black card, the same shape and size that her credit cards were. Cressida didn't see anything written on it, at least not until she turned the card over, where there seemed to be some kind of writing. It was in silver, written in some ornate font. Her eyes narrowed at it, trying to read what it said. "Gate... open?" she read aloud, taking a guess of what it said. The next thing she knew, the world around her had changed, and she suddenly found herself in some kind of foreign environment. She was inside some sort of enclosed courtyard with impossibly swaying grass, sitting in front of a singular tree. Cressida looked around incredulously, completely at a loss as to how she got here, or where here even was. "What????"

"Wonderful, you've arrived in one piece!" The boy's voice spoke from behind her, but no matter where she looked there was no one there. "Let me be the first to welcome you to this world of mine."

The voice seemed to shift about, as if it was moving around the enclosed space as it talked, first sounding as if it was coming from one direction then the next, then all around before focusing and changing location again.

"Hmm, those clothes aren't practical at all. Let's fix that." A gust of wind blew through the enclosed space, and Cressida's clothing changed. Individual threads thickened, making the fabric heavier and sturdier. Even thicker layers of padding appeared over her chest, stomach, and arms. "Much better. How does it feel? Still able to move around? Not too stiff? I'm just a bit out of practice as a tailor, not many visitors come quite so in need of a new wardrobe."

The voice moved around the space as it inspected its work. "Missing something. Oh yes!" There was a clatter as a variety of items suddenly materialized out of thin air a few feet away and fell into a jumbled pile on the ground. "You'll probably want a weapon. Feel free to take whatever you like, it's yours, free of charge."

The pile contained everything from a simple sword, a thin rapier, wooden bucklers, metal helmets, daggers, wooden poles, walking sticks, metal-tipped spears, axes, hammers, an unwieldy long bow, a crossbow, and even more obscure weapons, as well as other things such as rope, flint, and a variety of somehow not shattered glass vials containing liquids of all different colors.

"Hey hey, do you like video games?"

Cressida Alleva

Part of Cressida wondered if she was still sleeping. That this was some kind of strange dream and she still had to wake up. This was all too bizarre to be real... right? Cressida pinched her cheek, hoping that it would wake her up and she'd be in her bed, and leaving all of this weirdness behind. Instead, all it did was hurt her cheek, and she couldn't help but utter a sharp "ow!" and rub the spot that she pinched. Well, so much for that idea. Which meant that she really had ended up... wherever this was. As she was trying to figure out where she had been transported, the same boy's voice from the night prior spoke again, with the voice seeming to come from everywhere inside this courtyard enclosure all at once. Cressida's head whipped around, trying to find the source of the voice, though it didn't seem to necessarily be coming from one specific source. It's as if it was coming from the space itself... which made even less sense. "Your world?" She asked, standing up to get a better bearing of herself. Gravity felt the same here as she was used to, so that was good. "What exactly is this place?" She also asked, though she suspected she probably wouldn't get a straight answer.

What Cressida expected even less than for the voice to answer her questions was for the voice to start making things happen to her. With a gust of wind, her clothes began to change right in front of her eyes. The wind poofed through her hair, and she couldn't help but make some kind of surprised noise at feeling her favorite clothes suddenly transform into something that she would never wear normally. "Hey!" she interjected, though it was a bit too late as the clothes transformation was over before she could even protest. And despite her confusion and fear over the situation, she couldn't deny that the clothing was well made and nicely styled to perfectly fit her. She might even go so far as to say that she kind of liked it. "It, uh... it feels fine.." She answered, moving and twisting around a bit to get the feel for her new attire. It did fit quite nicely and was quite comfortable on her, she had to admit.

It seemed that the voice had quite a bit on it's mind, as it seemed to go quiet for a moment after retailoring Cressida's outfit. She was about to interject with her own questions about what was happening when the voice spoke up again, this time about missing something. "Missing somet-" she started, before the sight of a bunch of random weapons suddenly falling into a pile in front of her startled her and cut her off. Now the voice was saying to take a weapon or whatever else she liked, and at this point she was so confused by everything that she figured the best option would just be to go along with whatever was happening and maybe she'd get answers that way. So after a moment, she picked up an interesting red sword, deciding that this would be the weapon she would choose. It was kind of shiny and almost transparent, like it was made of hardened blood or ruby. The hilt of the sword was made of the same material that the blade was, giving it a more crude, but singular look to it. She swung it around in her hands (those sword-fighting lessons did come in handy after all, who'd have thought?), finding it to feel a lot more light in her hands than she would have expected a blade like this to feel. And for good measure, she decided to grab some non-weapon items as well. As she was grabbing some flint and vials containing red and green liquid, the voice returned, asking if she liked playing video games. She hadn't had much time recently to play games, so it had been a little while, but it didn't change the fact that she did enjoy them. "Ah, yeah, i guess I do." She answered, investigating the vials to see if there was anything in them or on them that would give away what they did.

"Really, you never play them though," the boy's voice sounded different, at the same time both distant and as if coming from inside her head. But then a moment later it spoke again from the other side of the space with its usual excitable ramble. "I love video games! Well I've never actually played one, but I've watched others play them a lot. A lot of really boring information comes from your world, but games are always fun." The voice focused as if the boy was standing right in front of her. "You said you wanted to play a game. That's why I invited you here. A whole world free of all of the annoying rules that keep your own so boring."

An innocent laugh echoed quietly before the voice reformed a short distance away. "Hey hey, want to see something fun?" It didn't pause for her to give an answer. "Say 'menu'" he called out. As soon as she did from the corner of her vision sprung forth a menu that looked like it was taken right out of a RPG game. It was transparent enough to see what was behind it while still being readable.

The first screen that opened up seemed to be a kind of status window. It had her full name, and below it the title 'Rookie Hero', and below that a bunch of different numbers and graphs that all seemed medical in nature, each one changing and updating before her eyes. Collapsing all of that information changed it into a single line that listed her physical condition as 'Normal'. The next option was equipment. It showed... her. Every detail of her was perfectly replicated in miniature inside the menu. Different parts of her clothing was highlighted, an arrow pointing off of it telling her she was wearing 'Basic Leather Armor'. Even the sword she'd just picked up was there, listed as 'Strange Iron Sword'. For some reason the name of the sword was a different color from the armor. The equipment menu had two more options in it. Equipment sets didn't have anything in it, but the weapon mastery showed her having some experience with unarmed combat and using a sword. Leaving the equipment section, the next option was skills. It said she had two skills for swords: 'Sheath' and 'Cutting Dash'. In magic she also found two spells: 'Observe' and 'Gate'. Strangely, the inventory section was completely empty. Going off the equipment showing what she was wearing she'd probably have expected the items she'd picked up to be shown here, but they weren't. At the very bottom of the menu was a small button that simply said 'Help'.

Cressida Alleva

Cressida almost visibly flinched at the sudden change in tone of the boy's voice. It was so chipper and happy, so to hear him suddenly act cold and angry definitely took her by surprise, especially since it also seemed to be coming from inside her head. And then for the voice to suddenly return to normal was also a strange transition, leaving her standing there trying to wrap her head around just what it was that this voice was. She didn't have much time to think on it though as suddenly the voice sounded from a spot that felt like it was right in front of her, commenting on how she had said she wanted to play a game. "Yeah, I suppose I did agree to that, didn't I? Guess I didn't really know what that meant..." she thought aloud, the sheer absurdity of the whole situation still not having sunk in yet. It only seemed to get weirder as the voice spoke "menu" and exactly that appeared. She blinked in shock as the transparent menu appeared right before her eyes. "Woah." She whispered, touching it on instinct and out of curiosity. She traversed the menu in its entirety, seeing what each section of the menu contained. Apparently she had access to magic in this world too, but as of right now she had zero idea what they did. There were some things she didn't quite understand, like the "cutting dash" skill, or why the sword she had picked up was written in a green color, or why the vials she had picked up didn't appear here. "Yeah, it really is." She agreed, still staring at the menu. "Though now I have a few questions about what I'm seeing..."
