Amaterasu

Mythology:

1 of 3 children born of Izanagi following his attempt to free his wife from the land of the dead her other brothers are Susanoo, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo. Amaterasu has always had the highest place among the 3 and the favoritism of their father Izanagi. Generally she is perceived by mortals to be kind and benevolent but in reality she is vengeful, spoiled, and cruel. She is constantly suspicious that her other siblings are trying to usurp her especially Susanoo as she sees him as the biggest threat. The myth that she spread about her brother Tsukuyomi is that he killed the goddess Uke Mochi at her wedding. The reality is Amaterasu grew tired of the mortals worshipping the lesser goddess (as she helped preserve their food) and demanded that Susanoo kill her. When Susanoo heard of this he refused and rushed to defend Uke. However at the banquet Amaterasu instigated a contest of who could drink the most between herself, Susanoo, and Tsukuyomi and Susanoo became drunk with sake. The next morning Uke Mochi was found dead in her bed - her heart pierced with a giant shard of light and the only ones who could manipulate light was Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu. Amaterasu banished Tsukuyomi to the land of the dead Yomi, so her rule would be secure.

Amaterasu and the Cave

A distraught Susanoo (who was in love with Uke Mochi) began to drink in excess to alleviate his pain but after 3 nights and 3 days of drinking his guilt turned to outrage. He confronted Amaterasu and struck her face with a lightning bolt. Amaterasu turned and saw the horrendous burn on her face and lost her mind. She threw all the mirrors on the ground and fled into a cave, disgusted at her disfiguration. The land was covered in darkness and crops began to wilt and die. Tsukuyomi consulted with Susanoo and they agreed that something must be done or the mortal world would perish. They fashioned a beautiful ceramic mask out of moonbeams and starlight and gave it to Amaterasu to cover her face with the promise that they would never harm her again.

Susanoo

Susanoo is stoic, god of few words type of person. He used to be more of a trickster (like loki) but the thousands of years has aged him. He has the power of storms and defeated the Yamata no Orochi in battle.
(more can be talked about and eventually added)

He falls in love with a geisha

Tsukuyomi

Tsukuyomi was Amaterasu's constant rival as he was her foil. Although they both controlled light magic, Amaterasu was the sun and Tsukuyomi was the moon. When Uke Mochi was killed Tsukuyomi immediately realized it was Amaterasu but he could not speak, for the sunlight is needed in the mortal realm whereas the moon was not so he went down to the world of Yomi. The sunlight never reaches the world of yomi and only the outcasts, fallen geishas and ghouls are found here. He has tried his best to make the underworld hospitable but is very cynical and his heart has been hardened by hatred.

Levels of Geisha Training
Three different levels. Before becoming a fully-realized geisha, the stages are shikomi (preparation or training), minarai (learning by observation), and maiko.

Shikomi is the first and lowest stage. In Kyoto, women can start from the young age of 15 or 16 after graduating middle school, but in Tokyo, they can only join after turning 17-18, usually after graduating high school. Their duties start from general housekeeping for the okiya, but they are very quickly taught the geisha arts. They complete this stage after a final exam in dance, usually after one year.

Next is minarai. While donning a slight variation of full-fledged geisha wear, they accompany an older maiko or real geisha as an apprentice. As their ‘older sister’ geisha attends events, they sit quietly and observe, taking in any information that may be useful, like games to play with their guests or serving tea. After about a month, however, it is now time to participate.

At this point, they become a maiko. The maiko follow the same mentor as before and also participates in appointments and events. They can also start doing things on their own, but must continue training in the arts.

All of this is done to advance their skills in areas like conversation, performing, and formal arts. This part can last for years before they’re finally official geisha.

Lastly they're an official Geisha
