answers to some questions that people asked in private! i think they would be useful to everyone

q: what is their current ranking from?
a: their current rankings are from their last evaluation at the end of their junior year, so it probably doesn't accurately reflect their current skill level since a year has passed since then. they may have improved since then - or gotten worse.

q: what are rankings based off of?
a: how good they are at their specialty/specialties, which is related to their concentration, and general athleticism and intelligence. specialty and combat abilities are equally important, which is why the system favors students in combat-related concentrations. this is how people like the assassins and bodyguards usually rank higher (martial arts, marksmanship, weapons study, etc., concentrations). they don't have to worry as much about academics.
computer science, forensic and investigative sciences, military physics, chemical engineering, etc., concentrations would need to both test well on paper exams/in labs as well as be proficient with weapons/good in combat in order to get a decent rank.

q: is below #30 bad?
a: no! even the student ranked #100 would be a much better fighter than the average person. this is an elite military academy. to put it in perspective, everyone above 50 is somewhat well-rounded - at least decent in both their specialty and in fighting. if a student's abilities in either one are not satisfactory, they would be ranked below 50.
