The year is 2047. 25 years ago, most of civilization was destroyed due to humanity's own hubris. Nuclear war in combination with rising global temperatures and a strange abundance of natural disasters wiped out billions of people. Yet, some managed to survive the wreckage and have worked to rebuild what was once there, continuing the fight against nature and each other for a share of the habitable land.
Whatever hasn’t been turned into a desert of debris is being reclaimed by nature. Most freshwater sources are able to be used safely again (even more so with proper filtration). Animal life is not nearly as prevalent as it was before, however. Many species have been completely wiped out while others that managed to survive continue to suffer from mutations and infection. Plant life is ample in many areas, though the debris deserts are mostly lacking of such flora and fauna.
Humans flock to small societies that remain in the skeletons of buildings called precincts while others roam the land, on the constant search for food, water, and temporary shelter.
From Nothing to Nowhere will focus mainly on the people of Precinct 58.
Precincts are groups of people/small societies that have settled in a place-- usually some sort of fortified building-- and are self-sustaining. Each precinct can be identified by a number. Every precinct is ran differently. Some are more authoritarian while others grant their people more authority. Some are ran by a governor while others rely on a council for decisions. Some combine the two concepts. It isn't uncommon for these governments to become corrupt. Some are opened for those not part of a precinct to join while others are not as accepting of outsiders. Some stay in contact with other precincts and trade while others keep to themselves.
Precinct 58 is located in what was once the Northeast of the US. It is only a few hours away from the ocean by foot and also has access to a freshwater river and a forest nearby. It is composed of several apartment buildings. The roofs have been converted into gardens and have water filtration systems. It relies on an elected council and elected governor when it comes to making big decisions. It works as a democracy where everyone has a say, or so it claims. It is relatively open to accepting new denizens and trades with other precincts often.
Your character(s) can be part of any role within Precinct 58. (medic, hunter, guard, council member, etc.) As long as you have one character that is a part of Precinct 58, feel free to make an additional character that is a part of some outside precinct or is a loner/traveler.
The trading market is where anyone can sell/trade their goods. It is an agreed upon neutral area and safe zone, so any fighting will not be tolerated. Many times this is the place where trades between precincts will take place.
THE WASTELANDS
The Wastelands is a large portion of land that is virtually unlivable. There is nothing out there: no food, no water, and nothing for shelter. No one seems to really know why. But, the universal agreement is that you do not go into The Wastelands.
Precinct 00 isn't actually considered a true precinct. It is a makeshift base full of a group of barbarians/cannibals. The people do not act like humans. Instead, they behave like rabid animals. They will kill on sight, so no trespassing unless you have a death wish.
Just as the name suggests, The Lake is indeed a lake. In fact, it is the biggest freshwater lake in the surrounding area that most people rely on as a water source. It is also considered a safe zone and thus, fighting or killing here will not be tolerated.
These are the roles within Precinct 58:
Governor; The governor is the main decision maker of the precinct and official representative as well. They work with the council to keep things running smoothly.
Council; The council consists of 5 people and the governor and are sometimes referred to as the advisors. They aid the governor in decision-making.
Guard; Guards help enforce the rules and protect the people.
Patrolman; The patrolmen are an offshoot of the guards. They are stationed just outside the perimeter of the precinct's borders and, as their name suggests, patrol.
Diplomat; Diplomats are in charge of communicating with outside precincts and groups, often meeting other leaders or diplomats in neutral zones.
Recruiter; Recruiters travel around, finding new denizens to bring back to the precinct in order to grow it.
Distributor; Distributors are in charge of handing out the weekly rations and other supplies to the denizens of the precinct.
Gardener; Gardeners are partially in charge of the food supply. They tend to the crops either located on the roofs of the complexes or the small fields.
Farmer; Farmers, rather than focusing on the crops, work with the domesticated animals and collect animal products.
Hunter; Hunters go off and hunt/fish in the surrounding area, collecting more food and the like for the rest of the precinct.
Scavenger; Scavengers are sort of comparable to freelancers. They are allowed to leave the precinct, collect things, and sell/trade them at the market, but they must also contribute some of their earnings to the precinct.
Medic; Medics treat the sick and the injured.
Weaponsmith; The weaponsmith is in charge of crafting and distributing weapons.
Teacher; Teachers watch over and educate children under 11.
Mechanic; Mechanics aren't very common, but they work on developing remaining technology and help keep the water filtration system in check.
Pastor; Pastors function as moral support, especially for those in the precinct that are religious. There are meetings every Sunday in the church room.
Children (0-11); If they are not under the care of their parents, children are left with teachers during the day to learn the basics of survival among other classical subjects.
Apprentices (12+); Once a child turns 12, they are required to become an apprentice of one of the roles.
Elders (65+); People above the age of 65 are no longer required to work and will receive their weekly rations regardless.
