From Me To You

"Alright class, as I'm sure you have been warned by my previous students, you will have a research assignment due by Friday of next week. No exceptions. The topic will be on a King and or Queen of your choosing from any European country between the years of 920 CE to 1410 CE. This will be a two person assignment. The groups..."

The rumble of student murmurs quickly grew as some groaned and others already began to grab the best partners soon the voice of the teacher was drowned out.

"Hey Adam! You me right?" A boy named Mark asked, poking Adam in the arm from across the aisle.

"Yeah of course man!" Adam responded enthusiastically bumping his fist into Mark's as a sign of locking the deal. It did not stop there though as several other students around him asked if he would partner up with them. He hated turning people down though so he made sure to find each of them a partner and promised that if they needed any help he would be happy to give them a few ideas or help them with their research.

"...Will be chosen by me!" The teacher finished, raising his voice above the rumble of the students. A unified groan escaped the class as they all slumped back into their seats. Once the whining was out of the way the teacher began to list off the pairings.

"Mark and...."

"Please be Adam... please be Adam..." Mark repeated to himself crossing his fingers.

"... Lindsey"

"Damnit!"

"Mark! Language!"

"Sorry teacher..." Mark sighed slumping even further into his chair.

"Hey man don't worry about it, Lindsey is smart and I hear she is single now," Adam teased him, patting him on the shoulder playfully.

"Sophia and Adam."

For once a name flew right over Adam's head. "Sophia? I didn't know there was a Sophia in this class..." he muttered to himself as he looked around at the faces of each student.

"I think it is that newer girl who doesn't talk much," Mark said pointing to a girl somewhat in the back of the class.

Soon the class was allowed to break up into their pairs so they could start planning their research paper. Adam made his way over to the girl and took an empty seat next to her. "Hey you are Sophia right? My name is Adam, it is a pleasure to meet you," he said cheerfully while holding his hand out.

Sophia just observed the chaos that happened after the teacher started his announcement. Each student tried to seek another to be their partners, usually their friends. But not her. She remained seated as they interacted with one another. Her eyes were drawn to the person everyone seemed to gravitate to.

She had noticed him when she first arrived. He was kind, he was happy. Everyone liked talking to him. He seemed like her polar opposite. And when the teacher started announcing the partners, she looked away and pretended as if it didn't matter to her. Never mind that her hands were clenched and she was biting her lips. And when her name was announced, her head swiveled so quickly as she stared at her partner. No freakin way... It was the most popular boy in class!

Her eyes round as saucers, she tried to control her nervousness as she saw him approaching. She fidgeted in her seat, playing with her book, tearing at the edges, little by little. "Uhm...hi. Nice to meet you," she gingerly shook his hands, her palm clammy. "I'm Sophia," she said, then her face flamed when she realized that he said he already knew her name. "You already knew that...uhm...yeah."

If Adam did notice how clammy her hand was he did a good job of hiding it. Besides, it was not uncommon for teenagers such as them to be nervous about meeting new people and he understood just how lucky he was that it came so naturally to him. "Awesome it is nice to meet you as well!" He moved his desk closer to her's so he could lean over close enough to hear him over the general buzz of the classroom. "So who are you thinking you wanted to do this report on? My idea was Richard I of England, supposedly he is known as Richard the Lion Hearted and my family has ties to him but I'm sure that last part is just my mom playing tricks," he said, concluding with a laugh.

"Then I figure once we settle on someone we could head to the library after school, grab some books, then head over to either your house or mine to get the bulk of the work done immediately. If we get most of the hard stuff done early, we could spend some more time getting to know each other. Sound good?" It may seem a bit pushy but that is just how Adam was, without trying he made it difficult for people to avoid becoming friends with him.

Sophia breathed a sigh of relief as he seemed not to notice her nervousness. She would hate it if the only guy who seemed to like everyone would hate her. But he was too close.

She considered leaning back as he moved so close she felt overwhelmed by his presence. Besides the face that made almost all women in school sigh as the sight of him, he also possessed the vitality and the charisma that made people gravitate towards him.

"I like that. Richard I is an interesting guy. Isn't that the same king who was involved with Robin Hood?" She remembered the movie she watched just laast week. And it made her happy that they will using the library. Though she is not familiar with the history stuff and social system of high school, the library is her kingdom. She spent endless hours there, reading, as others played in PE and exchanged stories during their free time. It made her less lonely, not seeing others have fun.

"Let's go after school. The librarian can help us a lot. She knows everything inside that building. But we need to be quiet though, she once got me a warning note when I forgot I was not supposed to laugh aloud." She knew she was blabbering. Dammit.

Adam nodded enthusiastically when she agreed to his choice of topic. "Yeah that is exactly the one! Awesome I was really hoping you would agree to him. I have the feeling I've got a good partner already," he flashed her a wide smile as she said this. Already he was beginning to look forward to these next few weeks. It did not matter to him if you were a jock, nerd, cool, or even dumb, in fact most of the time he did not even see himself as being cool. He was just a guy with a lot of friends.

A light laugh escaped his lips as he moved back into his own chair and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, she will do that alright. It makes sense that she is a little more strict now a days. I remember this one time..." And he continued on into a long winded story detailing the adventures and exploits about this group of kids a few years back who tried to mess up the librarian but reorganizing the entire library in one night. "...Of course this happened when we were back in middle school but I guess they ended up getting caught the next morning and had to spend the next school day reorganizing everything."

Just as he finished his epic tale the bell rang over the loud speakers, echoing throughout the school. That was the end of the school day, their teacher had waited until the last possible moment to drop the project on his kids. Although many of them already knew it was coming due to being warned by friends who had his class earlier in the day or during previous years.

"Hey Adam!" Mark called as he walked over to him. "Do you want to come over? I've got Ryan and Jackson heading over as well. We figured the four of us could go see that new movie about space with George Clooney in it."

Adam shook his head and put his hand on Mark's shoulder. "Sorry man, I already told Sophia here that we would head to the library to get a head start on things. You know I never like to let these things wait till the last minute. But hey, send me a text and I'll hit you up to do something this weekend!"

"Alright, well have fun with your... reading or whatever," Mark responded. He was obviously a little annoyed with Adam being taken away twice now and he shot a glance at Sophia before turning around leaving the class.

Adam laughed and shook his head as he got his things together and threw his back pack over his shoulder. "Sorry, I've now Mark since elementary school, he can be a bit clingy sometimes. But he is a good guy," he explained turning towards her. "Alright ready to go?"

Sophia was actually delighted with the story. For the first time, she was able to smile and laugh around because of someone. It made her feel warm, accepted. So this is what it feels like to have someone in school to talk to. So she watched with regret when he went back to his friend. And she felt envious. Of the camaraderie that he has with them. Thinking back to her other schools, she just remembered one girl who tried to get to know her. She thought she was starting to build a friendship with her when her mother needed to transfer again. After that, communication was cut off between them. They only exchanged numbers, but she was too scared and embarrassed to text her. That was one of her many regrets.

She stored her pens inside her case and placed her notebook and the case inside back to her bag. She picked up her bag and placed it on top of her desk as she waited for him. She just hopes the temptation to have fun with his friends rather than spend boring library time with her won't be too much. So she almost sighed with relief when he went back to her. She had a genuine smile on her face and slung her bag on her shoulder. "He looks like a fun person to be with." She remarked softly. "Let's go"

Trying to keep up with his strides, she now noticed just how tall he is, thus how long his legs are. They reached the library. She approached the librarian. "Hello, Ms. Berry! Could you direct us to the English History section, specifically from 920 CE to 1410 CE?"

"Yeah he is a pretty interesting guy to hang around with. You should meet him at some point," Adam said with a smile as they left the classroom. The library was close by so there was little time for conversation before they arrived within the rather vast expanse of books. He had only spent a handful of hours in this place, generally he was too busy spending time with others to find the time to really come here and appreciate the selection the school offered.

The librarian, a middle aged women with curly brown hair and glasses looked up from her desk and smiled widely once she saw it was Sophia. "Sophia welcome back! Yes of course hun, it is just down that aisle over there, should be somewhere near the end on the left hand side," Ms. Berry explained standing up from her desk to better direct them towards the section they were looking for. "You are obviously free to spend as much time as you'd like but be sure to keep it down."

"Of course," Adam responded and the two of them made their way towards the designated section. After several moments they found the section they were looking for. Even with a specific time period there were still a plethora of books on the subject and they would have to begin sorting through them to find any useful information. He grabbed one that looked promising and sat on the floor against one shelf, scanning through the pages for anything on Richard the 1st. "So I don't think I've really seen you around school much before. Are you new?" He asked looking up from the page he was currently on.
