True indeed I do think there needs to be a friend system, although I'm unsure if it's possible.

For clarification's sake, how would a friends list differ from a following/followers list like the system we currently use?

Also, if you click on a user's icon/username, you can select "start a conversation" to PM that user. That option is located underneath where you see their status update and how long they've been a member. You should be able to do that from any page where you see their icon. (And if you want to find a PM conversation you've already sent to a user, if your list of conversations, you'll find a "conversation display options" button that will let you search for conversations that involve a specific user. That's useful for finding group PMs that involve a particular user, or preexisting PMs.) Hopefully, that is helpful to you!

The follow system is basically the friend system. As far as organization of your message inbox, you can already do that. You can add custom prefixes to your PMs, pin/sticky them, 'star' them, and there is even a conversation filter.

You can also use the "Conversation Display Options" found at the bottom of your PM inbox and sort through PMs by username and prefix.

You can also create 'Participant Groups' where you can add a certain number of members and send group messages to them.

As far as easier messaging, ApfelSeine ApfelSeine already stated how easy it was to PM a user. Even on this thread, all you would need to do would be to click an avatar, then when the information box of that user opens, there is an option to "start a conversation."
