My Interest Check

❧ A mountainside full of trees slants deep into the sky on both sides of the scenery. Deep in the canyon, many waterfalls seep and flow past, and through rocks, and great cedars into a large river that coalesces at the bottom. On one side of that river a warrior camp resides. Protected by the flowing water from enemies, and predators on the other side, as well as defended on theirs by the large overhanging mountain. Nothing can jump on them, nothing can sneek up to them. In this tranquil space coves have been made into the side of the mountain, tree logs, and overgrown brush. Many felines walk around in this space of all sizes, fur lengths, and ages. The air is licked with humidity, but not thick with it. The sky a humble blue dotted with clouds, and the earth moist and full of greenery. It was mid new-leaf, and the sun had been up for but a short time.

❧ On the edge of the camp, a medium sized molly with long black fur patrolled gently, checking in on individuals around the territory. Wolf was making her morning rounds that were to be done after breakfast. Very few were still eating, and this was usually the elders, who took their time with just about everything. One of the many stops on Wolfs list was the medicine den. She was to check up on supplies and see what could be done with what they had. The medicine cat that normally stood there had been missing for a little over a day, and Wolf was beginning to worry. She would have to send out a new patrol to look for her soon, perhaps she would have to check things out herself. While it was prudent she stay in the camp to watch over things, something this important required her immediate attention, and she didn't want to announce the missing cat dead, or replace them till she was certain she had done everything in her power to remedy the situation.

❧ By the apprentices den, a small blue molly with white legs, and chest, seemed to be talking with a bunch of other apprentices. None were interested in her excitement or loud expression, but she was telling a grand tale of how she managed to catch a bird the other day, and it would have been apart of the food pile if it weren't for her mentor making her let it go. She made a furious look on her face as she recounted the part where she explained a black sphynx pulling her paw away from it. Saying something about 'that one is to young'. It was silly in her mind as food was food, but apparently the deputy knew more then her. Whether any of this was true or not made no difference as barely anyone was even looking in her direction as she went on and on.

"Fine! I'll go find someone else to share my stories with!" Possum would spat, and then carried on to look around the camp for someone who might hear her out.

- CoyoteSwirl -

CoyoteSwirl ducked against the touch of rows of earthy leaves that covered the entrance way, a limp, small body dangling from his jaws that carried the fresh scent of thrush. He had decided to go hunting for the easy go-to prey of trout, but the sound of fluttering wings caught his attention during the hunt. Now, with twitching whiskers from the overheard outburst from Possum, he carried his fresh-kill to the pile. Having it filled up at all times, but empty enough for food not to be wasted, seemed to keep the clan at ease. CoyoteSwirl curled his tail, cocking his head as if to wonder when the other patrols would be back. NocturnSight made a bad choice of leaving his appretice behind, because the small furbundle was just angrily stomping past the cats that had made no use of surrounding her. He shook his head, eyes rolling.

"One could could say the new litters are getting more spoiled..."

CoyoteSwirl turned away from the area chaos would be taking place in just a few minutes, settling himself under the shade of a leafy branch. Under the 'hood' was a nice, smooth, and cool rock which he slipped upon. From here, he could get a view from the main clear4ing and medicine den. It was the best place for him to swim in his thoughts. The only water best made for his pelt. Now going back to when he was hunting...

CoyoteSwirl had just caught that thrush and was heading back to camp when he spotted an unusual symbol on a nearby oak. A claw mark. It carried an odd scent, unrecognizable, but he thought too little of it. A rogue passing by would obviously be found by a patrol and shredded, and would naturally leave. Besides, no prey crumbs were left behind, and any other cat could handle the problem themselves once they found the odd logo.
How ignorant was he...

- Raven -

Raven leaped the fence, leaving the dusty, old, abandoned site where the others had taken refuge in. The pathway was crumbly, full of stones that scraped her pads, as she strode right past a dumpster with a cat on top.

"And I presume you are going...?"

The cat named Bats rumbled through a purr at the sight of her. She shrugged, giving him a mere glance.

"Not anywhere important, that's for sure. I'll just be roaming that area with these strong odors- they're like barriers. I figured prey would be best there, though it is a long way."

Bats frowned, as if just remembering to tell her something, but then he nodded and she went on her way.

Raven scrambled past another wall, using a dumpster to heave herself up. There before her were cars zipping by- a word she'd learned from the kittypets that lived in the red brick houses. The roaring of the road barely reached her ears as she made her way down and across the sidewalks which were made of some hard...rock? A far length up ahead was just the opening of some greenery, and Raven took note the 'journey' might take a day or two. But at least she had the chance to explore the growth past the two-leg area once more. A sudden creature walked past her, brushing her nose, and Raven hissed when she realized it was a two-leg carrying some stinky, white bags. Oh boy was this walk going to be long...

--

The sun was already mid-way in the sky when Raven reached the end of lined up houses, sight of dry paths in the color of dust catching her eye. On the far side was a perfect view of what looked like mountains, and even a distant forest lay ahead. Adrenaline rushing through her, she readied her haunches before she sprang forward, running towards the forestry. She had only ever been there once, and it was only on the outskirts of the land. The smell of other cats definitely were there, but that was a fifty-fifty if she had to be worried. Raven would have to stop half way probably to catch her breath and eat some moor-prey, but that was alright. The red hint of a barn laced the field as she raced past, wind buffeting her fur. Two-legs sure did make the worst places to settle...

--

The second sunrise had already passed for Raven when she halted at the closeness of the trees. Branches reached up, as if longing to touch the sky but always failing miserably. She knew Bats wouldn't mind her absence, so the risk of delving into the undergrowth was only up to the predators. The second her paw hit the forest floor, she was swallowed by the extravagance of the natural beauty in such common plants. Prey scents wafted to her nose, and the sounds of chirps arouse above her. Ponds were scattered evenly incase she ever needed to stop and drink. This place was amazing!

(This is past clan territory because the forest is so huge)

Fallen logs were gaping open with cobwebs hanging from the mouths. Moss was clinging to the bark of pines and wet rocks, and as she sniffed, the smell of squirrel filled her nose. She had already had her fill, but having a snack would do her good. But, the problem was, the area she lived in never had squirrel. Raven had no idea what the furry red creatures had up their sleeves. Without further ado, Raven crouched, pin pointing where the chattering of a nut and teeth came from. Just behind a - what looked like - bramble thicket was a plump squirrel. Raven crawled quietly forward, crunching a twig underneath her paw. She yelped, seeing the prey run away, and she leaped. But an ivy tendril that was crawling up the nearest tree, wrapped around her ankle. Slurs of feline curses left her mouth as she untangled herself. She supposed she'd have to let the prey go. She quickly got herself away from the area, as if to show she did nothing, when the sound oof something rumbling caught her ears.
Just a few more tail-lengths was a huge waterfall set on display, the trickling, rushing water having a pounding sound through her ears. Just below, in the dip of the fall, were several stones that possibly were used to cross over.

Now what if Raven crossed to the other side...

- TallBear -

TallBear, just arriving back from camp from the second border patrol - due to WolfStar having a solo one herself - scampered into camp. Inside, NocturnSight was soothing PossumPaw and the elders seemed to just have finished eating. His pelt was filled of leaves from an epic fall out of a tree...but we don't talk about it. He fluffed out his fur and shook it all off, then licked his back to smooth his pelt down. It seems as if his patrol came back before WolfStar because she wasn't here yet. A winning race for him! - Only a humorous thought.

For some reason though, TallBear felt relieved his leader was re-checking borders. Something was itching at him all patrol - as if whenever he marked something, the second he turned his back, someone would be trampling right over his tracks. The anxiety made him speed up the patrol, but all was good now. At least he hoped...

"Oh my, what are my whiskers even thinking about..."

|NOCTURNESIGHT. |

The Sphynx took into the account of everyone eating this morning---mainly the elders---and continued on. He had quite a few stops to do, and decided to check on his apprentices well-being. Nocturne knew that possum may have been at least discouraged or upset due to him making her drop a fledgling, but he had his reasons. As he approached the apprentices den, he saw the blue molly with white-legs storm off, clearly upset. He made his way towards the apprentice in hopes of cheering her up & justifying his actions at least.

Amusement tugged at the corners of his mouth as his voice reached, smooth, calm, yet laced with slight authority. "Possumpaw," Nocturne addressed, padding up beside her. Amusement still plagued his lips as he looked at his apprentice, a sigh coming from his mouth. "From the looks of it, you are upset. If it's about what happened at training, then I apologize but," He paused, going In front of her. "You must remember, that hunting isn't for the thrill of blood seeping into your maw. especially, that of prey." Sight's eyes softened as he sat down.

"That fledgling wasn't going to suffice. It was young, and from the looks of it, quite frail too. It had room to grow before meeting its demise sooner or later. It's not about feeding the clan today, but tomorrow as well."

He adapted a more gentle tone, but it still reeked of firmness. "Now, don't let me discourage you. You did well on your hunting assessment today, and I'm most certainly proud of you. So may I ask, if not request, you tell me your story. and lets talk about what you LEARNED." His one was inviting, and he allowed possum to reflect and share to not only calm her but help her grow too.

The Clans medicine cat had yet to return and Maplepaw was doing her best not to let the worry of that distract her from her duties. Their territory was large and the hunt for herbs often took longer than expected. Besides, her mentor was a fully grown cat that could take care of themselves.

Everything was going to be fine. All Maplepaw has to do was focus on the task given to her, which was sorting through their stores and organizing the herbs into piles to prepare for new stock.

Using her nose to detect herbs going bad and her paws to detect any herbs going soft and squishy, she pushed the herbs to be discarded into a pile by the den entrance that she would later swept outside.

A rumbling in her belly interrupted her concentration and she idly wondered if the hunting parties had returned. Rising to her feet and stretching, the blind apprentice padded towards the den opening and eased her way outside, nose lifted to the sky and ears perked for signs that flesh kill had been brought into camp.

She took a moment to pause in a patch of sunlight, the rays warming her fur and making her dark ginger fur shine as her sightless eyes closed. She had been in the den since she had awoken so it was nice to soak in the rays of new-leaf while she could. There would be a lot of work ahead to fully replenish their stores from leafbare.

With a shake to clear her mind of troubling thoughts, the apprentice continued her journey to the freshkill pile, her paws tracing over familiar ground as she walked.

❧ Wolfstar smiled to see that the herb shelves seemed stocked. Even though they couldn't be used till the return of their medicine cat, at least the materials were there. She might be able to pick out poppy seeds for pain, but she wasn't trained in health whatsoever. Walking by her was the apprentice, and it made her smile. The young one seemed to be working hard, and the sun brightly shone through the leaves to greet them. Her first instinct would have been to make sure the path was safe for the young one. Remembering how she used to trip and fall a lot before she was assigned apprentice, but she paused in understanding, as Maple was grown up now, or at least grown up enough to not be babied in such a manor.

❧ Instead, she prodded up to the young feline and spoke softly, hoping her approach was audible enough that her voice would not spook her. "Maplepaw. excellent work with herbs. May I ask you a question, when was the last time you saw your mentor?"

❧ She did this while debating on who to send out for patrol to look for that mentor, as Tallbear caught her eye peering into the camp. He had no apprentices so he'd be free to do so during the afternoon training. She could even accompany him perhaps as this issue was so important to her. It wasn't something to make the clan worry about though, as panic would solve nothing, so if anyone asked she decided to answer with a 'the medicine cat is out searching for rare herbs, they will be back soon'. Wolf hoped that would be enough, even though most cats weren't supposed to patrol to far out on their own.

❧ Possumpaw was searching the camp diligently, when she spotted the other blind apprentice. At first leaping forward when a familiar black body stopped her. This caused her to slide in the dirt before her, and her little head to pull upward. She had not noticed anything in her way till this point, nothing said by anyone or anything, and was hardly aware of the warriors coming back from patrols. That being said, she immediately noted the look on her mentor's face. He had heard the bragging, and complaining. She was getting ready for an earful when the words 'tell me your story', and her young mind shut out the rest. She couldn't wait to tell the story she was going to spew to Maple. Her eyes were lit up like stars as she began to carry on into the same words repeating in her head.

❧ "So, I was crouching reeaaaal low like practically flat to the ground, looking for prey. When I felt a vibration. I noticed that a flock of birds were at a low branch of a tree. Slowly stalking forward, I eyed the one I caught. I could sense it's fear. Ready to pounce I held my breath, and leaped at the branch. Most of them flew away, but I had the fletchling by the end of it's feather!" She was reenacting the whole situation in front of Nocturne with glee. Even so excited that before she pounced, her bum wiggled obtusely. In the moment it was poor form, and not likely exactly how she had done it in the initial moment, but she didn't seem to notice or care. "As it wiggled and screamed I taunted the other birds who were panicking on a higher branch. Man I almost had 'em too. If I was just a little bigger I bet I could have leaped up to the branch they were on."

- TallBear -

The sudden sounds of a pelt brushing past leaves made him turn his head to see WolfStar returning. It was clear she had finished her patrol. TallBear took notice of her sudden movement towards PossumPaw, but then was stopped by a black sphynx - NocturnSight. The deputy instead was the once encouraging PossumPaw to retell her story of her let-go-catch of a bird. TallBear decided to sit besides a bush nearby and listen in. For an apprentice, in his opinion, the catch she described was pretty good. Especially since the young cat went all the way to the conclusion of jumping into the tree. Sure, it was half reckless and NocturneSight got a point of it being young, but everyone made mistakes.

In the corner of his eye, he saw few elders approaching as well. Wasn't it supposed to be the other way around; Where the elders told stories to kits about the old sunrises? Seems like PossumPaw's story was a huge turn on for most cats after NocturneSight's gentle prod. TallBear curled his tail around his paws, a small smile playing his lips. So long the clan had no altercations, he was content. Besides, even if PossumPaw didn't have the thrill or enjoyment of telling her story, the sunny sky would lighten up her mood one way or another.

- Bats -

The musty odor of crowfood filled his nose as rats scuttled past. A fat orange tom was picking at some bones of an already eaten mouse. Raven had seemed to be gone for about two sundowns, and now everything was dull and boring. All he was able to do to entertain himself was hunt for himself and Ginger - the leader of their somewhat group. Ginger didn't even hunt for himself yet claimed such role. Pathetic. Bats always had lingering ideas of somehow following Raven's scent trails to see where she went; different places each time, but he knew she'd cuff his ears and send him back. What did she do all day though?

Bats growled when he stepped on a rat's tail, and he jumped away and accidentally rolled into a large gray 'tin'. It made a loud bang, making him dizzy as he rolled around in it. A loud laugh came from where Ginger sat, and Bats hauled himself up, anger and embarrassment flushing his pelt. He extended his claws and scraped the odd material, shaking his fur. Something gooey had fell onto him, and he sniffed, before gagging. Bats rubbed against a nearby wall, hoping to get rid of the disgusting gob.

Ginger: "Aha! Seems like someone found themselves in some fox dung."

The cat teased, and Bats whirled on them with a menacing snarl.

"If you got something to say, why always shy to say it to my face?"

Ginger paused, then looked at Bats in a dumbfounded way. Clearly the cat didn't care, which only fueled his anger. Bats leaped on the fat cat, claws digging deep into the tom's shoulders so blood welled onto the orange tabby fur. Ginger yowled in agony as Bats came close to his face, baring his teeth.

"Think about insulting me again, and I'll have Raven take your place. We only claimed you as your leader before because we were weak, but now we're plenty strong."

With that, Bats stomped off down an alleyway, leaving the horrified cat behind. The scent of the she cat he just mentioned still was here - but stale. He inhaled her scent with a sigh, making up his mind.

He might as well follow Raven.
