Soooo I tagged this as a fandom ad, but I'm of the opinion that this series has done so much with it's cast and story that I'm more interested in doing something like FLCL, but not quite canon. I'm not at all against it being in the universe or directly using the concept if you want that, tho. That is TBD.
I re-watched the series recently and I want to do something related to it, but it's harder to make an ad for than I thought it'd be!
Fooly Cooly is a lot of things and I don't want to be confusing about what I'm looking to write, so here is the best summary I can come up with: an emotional coming of age exaggerated and amped up to 100 with powers, action, monsters, and sci-fi and/or paranormal elements. Likely some focus on romance. And I'd love to capture some of it's weirdness.
How to accomplish this? Especially when FLCLs story is so bonkers? Well, I just want to incorporate some of the core elements. I'm thinking a sudden, world altering arrival meddling with and manipulating the emotions of the inhabits of a small, mundane and boring town. Sci-fi alien-robot stuff like FLCL is a possibility, but in a heavily inspired story we can make it whatever sort of invader we like.
Then, an even more important element being our characters experiencing angst, intense emotions, romance, and life-changes that trigger some sort of power or straight up create monsters/aliens/robots whatever the heck we are aiming for. I am willing to go a little slower with it than FLCL does, focusing on their problems and relationships and really getting into why these characters are so overwhelmed, because I genuinely enjoy writing stuff like that, with the plot about their emotions triggering crazy fights and action of course being a priority, but with room to just write some normal emotional drama and romance as well.
If you'd like there to be a Haruko type who is purposely pulling the strings and trying to cause some of these triggers to happen, I'm totally down for that, but I can see it working without that type of character either.
Some misc things and themes that I think could play well into an FLCL-type plot:
characters dealing with depression, anxiety, and intense emotions for the first time
extreme pressure from families or peers
romantic tension and repressed romantic feelings
rock and roll/punk music! FLCL is musically amazing and even tho we can't exactly incorporate the pillows into an RP, we could incorporate a band or characters who are fond of music
very exaggerated personalities and comedy
lightly magical girl inspired, if you want to take a more on-the-nose direction with their powers
As I said earlier in the ad, if you want it to be more or less canon you can let me know, but I'm thinking more from an original perspective at this time and don't have any ways to connect it to the show's plot in mind.
In conclusion, I am apparently not very good at formulating an idea for an FLCL inspired plot (it's a tough one give me a break!) but would love to plot and discuss with anyone who enjoys FLCL or similar anime (I enjoy things like sonny boy and tatami galaxy as well) to see what we can come up with. I will be armed with ideas and am EXTREMELY open to hearing ideas for plots as well. I am very LGTBQ+ friendly especially in an FLCL type story where that could be a core element.
