While set in the Firefly ‘verse, the time of the RP is original enough that I consider it a non-fandom unless the characters enter cryogenic suspension for about four centuries.

Boarding of the ark ships begins. Over the last five decades, Earth's population has dropped to around one billion due to starvation, disease, toxic contamination, and criminal activities. Reproductive rates have dropped to near zero. Most of the Earth's population now lives in squalor. Although most ark ships will not depart until completely loaded (a process that takes years), survivors welcome the safe, sterile, climate controlled environments of the Ark ships after the horror Earth has become. A rich black market develops that sells positions in the boarding lottery, falsified medical certificates, and other items needed to gain quicker access to the arks.
Today
You are NOT one of those lucky enough to win the lottery. And the price of a boarding ticket is beyond your means. You are one of those who will be left behind to the horrors that await. There are rumors of bunkers. But as the Earth is beyond hope of recovery, that way seems to be a dead end. Die now; die later. What’s the difference? Yet, you struggle each day to survive. And now there is talk of martial law.
Setting
The RP is set in the American southwest, Albuquerque. One of the launch sites was a little south in White Sands. My character lived there even before the lottery. How you met him is something we can discuss. He would probably come to town periodically for supplies. He always seems to have enough to get by. He isn’t like most of the locals. It is hard to describe. He once GAVE you a couple filter cartridges for your mask - for nothing. They worked better and lasted longer than the regular ones - 7 times as long. Only government personnel have access to anything like that. Or maybe black market. So maybe, just maybe, he might be your ticket to get onto an Ark.
