Fantasy Fire Emblem Divide: Garrett x Melnax

C-Support Start - Garrett x Melnax

The camp's atmosphere was heavy with anticipation, fear, and other assortment of emotions that would take a poet years to describe each feeling perfectly. One such emotion is excitement for the upcoming skirmish between the Alliance and the Legion, this strange emotion is held by one of the older members of the 13th Battalion, Garrett Robin.

Garrett Robin is one would call "a sarcastic git", his sense of humor is cutting and snide often pointing out a people's flaws and mistake that is only found funny to himself. This didn't make him the most popular person around but if you wanted somebody to get dragged though the verbal muck you go to this man, but he doesn't do it for free mind you, only idiots would do anything for free, he would ask for dessert rations or for some gold, not much mind you, can't ask for too much or else you get caught and get court martial for conning your follow soldiers. So Garrett always says its good natured ribbing and bets that help boost morale and job efficiency, it always work so far so he never got more than a slap on the wrist.

The reason this man is excited for the upcoming skirmish is due to a myriad of reasons. One is that he can unleash his life long frustrations on enemies with no repercussions, heck, praised to do so, as well placing bets to earn some extra gold on the side, but for some reason nobody wanted to bet anything, its like they don't want to make a life or death situation into a game, young people theses day are so boring and lame.

But while Garrett looked out in frustration at the lack of willingness to bet one's livelihood on a battle that could end their lives, he spotted a tall blonde man sitting all by his lonesome. A real stick in the mud looking bastard. Garrett could name a few more. But this stick has a looser purse than the other sticks, also less morals too when it comes to coin, if what the thunder warrior heard is true.

Garrett let out a grin and walked to the mercenary with a relaxed expression and posture. This should be fun.

"Oi, Blondie!" Garrett called out to the stone faced merc. The Merc didn't respond, Garrett's expression shifted. "Oi! I know you can hear me, I want to talk to you." Garrett spoke again while thinking of how he's possibly the only one who wants to do that with this mercenary. Kinda sad really.

Melnax looked up from his wood chopping station, which was little more than a tree stump with a small mountain of wood piled neatly next to it, and rolled his eyes. He turned back to the stump and placed another large log on it's center.
"Should've known that would be you. No one else talks in quite a sickeningly chipper attitude. Say what you need to say then go, then. This wood isn't going to chop itself."
As if to cement his point, he brought the axe down hard, splitting the log in one clean slice. He walked forward and picked the two pieces up and placed them onto the stack with the others.

Garrett's expression shifted to an annoyed expression for a moment when the wood chopping merc spoke before correcting it to a more neutral, smiling, expression. No wonder why nobody goes out of their way to talk to him. "Want to go straight to the juicy part, huh?" Garrett responded with a cocky grin. Good, they don't have to deal with each for too long. "I was thinking, since we're putting our lives at risk for the sake of the world so future generations do not have to live in a hellscape, full of monsters and endless bloodshed-" Garrett paused dramatically, trying to sound as heroic as he can, which honestly if you know him doesn't suit him at all. "that'd we take bets in the next battle to ease the stress of battling the first war in millennia and maybe make a bit of loose change on the side for days off." Garrett spoke while sugarcoating his morally dubious bet. Morals has never been high on this man's priority list; money and comforts, on the other hand, those were way up there on the list.

Garrett let out another grin and a wink this time before asking the big question, "Well? What say's you?"

Melnax didn't need to listen too long for him to realize just what Garrett was playing. Sure, Melnax gambled, but only on things he was sure to win. He couldn't afford to lose money, not now.
"Hmph. I'll admit that I've been known to gamble in the past on interesting bets, but to be perfectly frank Garrett, I don't trust you. You seem more like the type to take the clothes off of a homeless persons back than to give someone a fair bet. Or at least that's the impression that I get from you."
He stood up straight and wiped a thin layer of sweat from his brow with the back of his hand, then took his axe and slashed it into the tree stump, sticking it in place. He turned around to face Garrett with a hard gaze, sizing him up. There was just something about Garrett that made Melnax think of him as untrustworthy. Perhaps it was the fact that he always seemed to go around in a happy mood. The only people Melnax had met in his years of traveling who acted like that usually had something to hide behind it. Then there was Garretts getup, which reminded him more of a thief than an archer.
You could usually tell a man's character by the armor he wore; The ones in heavy armor were the type to face their problems directly and without fear, the ones in light usually dealt with their problems with words or a dagger to the back, and the ones with something in between were usually the guys you could trust. Medium armor users tended to wear their hearts on their sleeves but remain cautious as well, to face their problems directly but also realize it could be solved without violence. It was a perfect balance between the two, and looking at what Garrett had on now didn't exactly inspire confidence in Melnax.
Still, Melnax was willing to do almost anything if it meant getting coin in his pocket. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if Imogene passed and he had an opportunity to save her, yet let it be because of the one who presented it. He crossed his arms and kept his back straight as he stared Garrett down.
"So what exactly is it you had in mind, then?"

Garrett rolled his eyes so hard that'd they risk falling out at the merc's response, it seems like sugarcoating won't work on him, but he did planted the seed of thought into the blond's mercs mind so there's that. But he can't let his pride looked be shattered by a simple criticism, that would make him look pathetic. And he is not pathetic. Garrett let out another one of his cocky grins as he spoke, "Trust isn't ideal for betting, heck, betting with trust leads to losses, as any good gambler knows trust only leads to being taken advantage of, so I say with that in mind, your odds are better than if you trusted me... and I may be many things but a cheater isn't one of them," Garrett said with a nonchalant shrug and a relaxed grin, he had a thought to add to his last sentence which he wouldn't say aloud at this moment since it would make the bet more difficult, but the thought was "Most of the time, honestly, winning fairly makes the victory taste all the more sweeter and the gold all the more shinier." Garrett let out another one of infamous grins. He loves making gamblers cry.

The wood axe wielding merc stood up straight and stared right into his eyes. Garrett's expression and stance was still relaxed if curious about what the merc is looking at exactly. He let out a mischievous grin, "See something you like?" Garrett joked as he let out a chuckle. Romance and love is rubbish and a waste of time but digging into people's love lives and taste were always fun to do, and who could blame a person for looking at him for extended amount of time, he's quite the looker if he's being honest.

Suddenly, the merc spoke up asking what kind of bet they are going to take part in. Garrett's grin grew and he let out a more honest smile before laughing gleefully, this sucker doesn't know what will hit him! "Hah! I knew you had a Gambler's soul! And don't fret Blondie, this bet is fair as it is a test of skill! So I say we're both on equal footing!" Garrett said cheerfully still pleasantly surprised by the man's question, it wasn't a clear yes or no, but a Gambler doesn't ask questions if they want to say no. "The bet is who can take out the most Legionaries in our next mission! See it is both helpful to the cause and us personally! It gives us even more incentive to do better if the fear of death hasn't already clued you in, but we also get something more immediate out of the mission and since we are practical men, something a little more solid between our fingers would make us feel better than the warm feeling of helping save the world..." Garrett cheerfully spoke, but he paused while talking and his relaxed expression turned serious. "That feeling won't keep us warm for long, and a war is always long." Garrett grimly remarked before he let out another grin, "So, what say's you? Yes or no?"

It wasn't really in Melnax's nature to scowl, but as Garrett continued to speak, he found himself scowling more and more. He of course noticed when Garrett rolled his eyes, and Melnax was pretty sure he wanted him to. Once he was finished and that smug grin of his had taken it's place, Melnax shook his head in disappointment.
"No, I don't see or hear anything I like from what you've just said. And I think there's something ironic to be had by being lectured on trust from a complete stranger. Trivializing the deaths of other people and making it into a game is a sick concept Garrett, even if they are our enemies. If they attack me, i'd have no qualms defending myself, but unless I've been ordered to do so, I don't plan on killing any of the Legion."
He turned around and pulled the axe out of the stump and carefully placed another log onto it.
"I've never been one to turn down easy gold, though. How about this: I've heard that we're supposed to be retaking some sort of fort that's been overrun by demons. How about we have a wager on who kills the most of them, huh?"
He brought his axe back up and swung it down with great force. He didn't turn around as he picked up the pieces and placed them on the pile.
