I'm just a silly newb, just sitting here and creating a few characters... and I thought I would ask the august body at ECR what your Favored Fighting Abilities are and, if you like, why? Of course it depends on your style of play and character concept, but I'm curious if there are any abilities that people tend to shy away from.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere. Thanks, and I'll take your answer of the air.

I choose martial Arts, because I like to punch things. Also the whole diversity thing. Melee comes in a close second due to my love of hitting things really hard with big things.

Martial arts, because if you take the right one it can involve any of the following

a)throwing deadly crap at people

b)hitting people with large weapons

c)using a bow/gun to fling stuff at people

granted not quite as well as if you specialised but it's all just combo-licious fun

don't get me wrong, archery is really cool, has some really nice charms too. there's just not a fantastic degree of customisation which I find dull to match to a character type.

everytime I decide I'm gonna use archery I end up designing a green hatted teenager riding a wolf...or a rabbit lunar for some reason

No, that makes two of us, ops. I loved Second Edition all the more when I read the Archery fixes for Solars.

MA are no doubt the best fighting skill. and one should worship who decided to move to 2Ed when they removed BRAWL. God exists if nothing for this reason! :)

I like solar archery, solar melee and solar thrown.

Second tier is for me sidereal melee and sidereal war (oh come on, swat teams made up of spirits are just too awesome).

I don't like martial arts at all and to be honest I think whoever puts it over solar melee or archery in terms of coolness or effectiveness is deluded

that's me :D

though I don't think it's more effective, just has a wider range of styles to suit any asskicker on the go, when playing a dawn caste it's giant orichalcum plank and melee all the way, and if I ever get to play a night caste I might dabble at archery or thrown

I'm currently playing a Jack Of All Trades/Spy Changing Moon Lunar (previously described as "A weird mixture between Batman, Han Solo, Che Guevara and the Spiderman") who has Martial Arts as primary combat method. It's pretty versatile, in fact. It allows me to combat with all animal shapes and with my dire chain.

Would it be safe to say that if a Lunar plans to throw down the gloves regularly in an animal form, Martial Arts is pretty much essential?

Well, where do you think the animal styles come from?

Eh...I like whichever one suits my current character concept. Big, powerful, intimidating thug-type Alchemical? Melee. Unarmed fighter, particularly a shapeshifting-happy Lunar? Martial Arts. Archery is fun when you're playing a sorcerous, horse-riding type (though Lightning Hoof can be fun for that as well), and Thrown is an interesting unexpected twist, and particularly fun if your a Dragonblood.

I really prefer none of them over another when it comes down to it. I just play what interests me at the time, and take what suits the idea. *shrugs* So thus, I shall not actually throw a vote into the list above...just state my opinion and call it good enough.

Personally, I like Martial Arts, for a number of reasons. One of which is that ANY type of character can learn some form of Martial Arts Charms. Playing a mortal who has bootstrapped their way into usefulness is interesting and fun to me...even if in a game with Exalts. Becoming involved in the Martial Arts world can lead to plenty of interesting RP. And frankly, stylistically, many of the Martial Arts trees are more interesting than other combat trees. As well, I'm interested in the whole stepping above your station ability of Martial Arts, even if it isn't always worth the cost.

Solar and Sidereal Melee are of course very strong...but I find neither particularly compelling and interesting. Sadly, DB Melee...is shafted, particularly defensively, leaving a DB close combatant almost forced into being a Martial Artist if they want competence on an Exalted level battlefield, or relying on Resistance, Dodge and  Athletics charms to improve things...that they could just as easily use with a different primary combat ability and be more effective. DB Thrown is quite solid and interesting to me, but I generally prefer to get up close and personal, or prefer to focus on defense for characters who aren't heavily combative...and Thrown offers no Parry DV, though still more useful defensively than DB Melee. Archery...gives you access to a number of interesting weapons, and is a must for anyone who wants to be an artillerist, but only interests me in military games with heavy weaponry going around. Admittedly, the advent of the Gladestalker Hearthstone made it a lot more viable with a Powerbow...but it still doesn't catch my fancy. For a Lunar...frankly, you can focus and mix and match combat abilities all you want...but if you want to fight in animal forms, or to broaden out beyond Lunar charms, Martial Arts is a must.

On a different note, I love War. It is a beautiful ability. I personally am fond of the Dragonblooded and Lunar related War type charms, and certainly find the Solar ones useful, if less interesting. I am less interested in the Sidereal ones...but then, I'm not really very fond of Sidereals mechanically.

MA luvin... for all the obvious reasons brillantly explained previously...

But it's only because melee lacks tons of thing that were for some strange reasons, attributed to MA.

If melee was a bit more developped, for solars and lunars mainly it could be interesting.

I personally favor archery, closely second by melee.

Perhaps it's just my nature not to be directly in the conflict, I'd rather stand off to one side and plink extras off with my powerbow or something. And archery governs flamewands or flamepieces which, I think, are the coolest weapons in the game. If given half a chance I want to play the southern gun-slinging cowboy type that is just a hardass with some guns.

While I know people would think of Righteous Devil martial arts when I say that I would not do righteous devil, mostly because I DESPISE martial arts. In my little opinion, I feel martial arts are broken and stupid fluff. I won't play with them. Others can, that's fine, you won't see a character of mine with more than solar hero. I have made a character or two with martial arts, but none of the charms because I feel forms are just a waste of space, why is martial arts so special? Bring back brawl and I'll take it.

Melee is of course fun because I always like dual-wielding. Scrawny-no-bodies that rock socks because they can dual-wield some short daiklaves, or the broken lunar that does dual scythes (in DBT). It's a thematic game and I especially love thematic melee specialists.

I went with Archery, just 'cause I got a thing for Firewands (and yes, I understand there are a couple of MA styles out there for firewands). Saying that, I agree with Dracogryff when it all depends on character concept really.

To be honest, I prefer characters with Melee. Because even if you lose a weapon, it doesn't take many Stunts to get another. Yes, Martial Arts has all sorts of funky kewl powerz and versatility is nice, but sometimes you need a specialist, and a specialist in bringing the pain. Melee brings it, and then some.

Im really just going to say martial arts

because im bias and absolutely love dreaming pearl courtesan

but after reading a bit more into melee im starting to like it a bit more, plus it seems a bit like stressful on exp then martial arts sometimes is
