"Growf!"
You live on an island where the economy has all but crashed and everyone is struggling. New money - a casino - has come in to buy everyone out for a meager sum, but better than nothing. Half the town is fighting to preserve their culture. Half is desperate enough to bail. But the casino wants it all and needs a 100% response. So the deal isn’t done - yet.
Exactly what you do on the Island and what side you take is up to you. Personally I would prefer someone fighting to keep the island. It just fits the RP better. Maybe it is home. Maybe you are some sort of historian. Maybe you are a biologist fighting a lost cause to preserve a natural habitat of a rare species not quite recognized as endangered. Maybe your family has run a business on the Island since forever.
The year is 2037 (about 20 years from now). The economy is being wrecked by the developments in alternate sources of protein. Soylent Green, the rights to the name bought from the movie, is made of crickets. Vegan appetites have grown over the years. Cloned meat has caught on. Fresh meat is becoming a delicacy rather than a staple. Tourism is being wrecked by the internet and its virtual tours. This has become even worse with the development of 3D virtual environmental interfaces and increasingly more sophisticated AI that can simulate historical periods and whole populations.
Half the people in town are amateur actors now. They get scanned into AI databases to act the parts of various eras. Some do Reality TV shows based on various eras or jobs. They get paid residual incomes based on internet hits.
What the casino has in mind will pretty much wreck all that. It is counting on its large payout to offset those incomes.
My Character
This is where my character comes in. He shows up and begins making quiet inquiries about buying some property. He is young and handsome, doesn’t look especially rich. But he catches wind about the casino and starts asking questions. More importantly the casino gets wind of his interest. Is he looking to drive the price up?
Then he makes an inquiry about a rather large tract of land that includes the crumbling lighthouse that was closed down for safety reasons. It goes back into the interior of the island to an old colonial days home that is now in ruins. The historical society couldn’t afford to restore it. Of course, he also asked how much it would cost to bulldoze the remains.
I could also entertain this as a small group RP.
