Bless your sister of the light
As she braves on through the night
As she braves on through the night
It is said in the world of Aubade that the formation of the six crystals - Pyralis, Maris, Aella, Terra, Solis, and Tenebris representing fire, water, air, earth, light, and darkness respectively - brought about the conditions necessary for life. These crystals maintained the balance of the elements, and interference would cause disastrous irregularities to occur. In times of extreme need, a crystal would use up extraordinary amounts of power and shrink from its exertion to keep the balance intact.
Long ago, the Terra had shrunken to about half of its normal size due to extreme deforestation, mining, and other forms of ecological destruction to support the growing human population. The Aella also suffered from the release of toxic emissions. As a result, the scientists and engineers of the time sought to find alternative methods for energy. Though solar, water, and wind power were used, these methods were still not enough to prevent reliance on materials that destroyed the environment. Aubade was dying, but a solution was found before it's destruction.
Scientists discovered that the Solis's energy could be used to power electric devices. Since direct physical damage did not weaken the effects of a crystal, the population came to realize that using pieces of the Solis was affordable, effective, and efficient. Almost overnight, cities clamored to apply shards of the crystal to power grids. A seven-foot shard could provide more than enough electricity for citizens within a one-hundred-mile radius. Only some isolated towns still had to use primitive methods, such as fossil fuels, for electricity.
The solution worked. Pollution and habitat destruction dropped dramatically within ten years, and the Terra and Aella slowly began to recover from the centuries of damage. The metropoles that benefited from the Solis boomed and grew into sprawling mini-empies, called "sunlight cities", for use of the crystal.
People quickly found out that the crystal's use resulted in the formation of energized waste. Though it was not radioactive or hazardous, it was useless for providing direct energy to citizens. Upon realizing this, the Grand Council ordered that the waste be collected in impermeable tanks and stored deep underground, in case they could find a use for it in the future. With that question answered, people were free to live in great prosperity.
Her brother darkness loves to smite
May he always have great might
May he always have great might
One thousand years later, the Solis began to mysteriously dim worldwide. As a result, nights gradually grew longer and electric power was considerably weakened. Aubade poured their efforts into this problem came upon a method of suspending the Solis shards in pools of its liquid waste. This gave some energy back to the crystal and halted the growth of nighttime, but this new source of power depleted faster than the shards could regenerate energy.
Another century passed. The shards had turned a purple hue as a benign side effect of feeding on its byproducts. The overpopulated sunlight cities constantly demanded the Solis' power, resulting in the acceleration and lengthening of night once more. An energy crisis was fast approaching - if the recycled waste was not enough, then what was?
And her children see the bright
Where there is none to fright
As the days grew shorter and colder, the crystal Tenebris expanded in size, feeding on citizens' fear and creating shadowy translucent monsters to terrorize the people and destroy the shards. To combat the new threat, the military was set up inside and around the cities at all times. Pyralis, Maris, Aella, and Terra attempted to neutralize the threat by exercising their own power. Forest fires blazed across overgrown forests, quenched only by massive floods and tsunamis that destroyed villages and damaged coastal sunlight cities. Earthquakes opened massive fissures in the earth and created impassable mountain ranges. The land of Aubade was unbalanced by what the people put their hope, their faith in. Outraged and cynical, massive numbers of Aubadians fled the continent. The people who stayed were desperate to combat the Tenerbris' monsters and restore balance to their land.Where there is none to fright
Our heroes are members of the Council Vanguard, one of the more newly-formed groups in Lumen's army. It has been a month since the first strange monsters have appeared. As an inexperienced branch, the Council Vanguard has been stationed to regularly patrol an unlikely point of attack - a small chapel surrounded by greenery on the city's outskirts. The Grand Council, once impassive towards the natural disasters and suspicious when questioned for a solution, enlisted this select group of warriors to cut more of the Solaris to power Aubade and neutralize the wrath of Tenebris. They must then travel to the sunlight cities and restoring the Solis to its true power. Scientists predict the Council Vanguard will have 30 days to complete their task before Aubade is plunged into darkness.
