Bless your sister of the light
As she braves on through the night

It is said in the world of Aubade that the formation of the six crystals - Pyralis, Maris, Aella, Terra, Solis, and Tenebris representing fire, water, air, earth, light, and darkness respectively - brought about the conditions necessary for life. These crystals maintained the balance of the elements, and interference would cause disastrous irregularities to occur. In times of extreme need, a crystal would use up extraordinary amounts of power and shrink from its exertion to keep the balance intact.

Long ago, the Terra had shrunken to about half of its normal size due to extreme deforestation, mining, and other forms of ecological destruction to support the growing human population. The Aella also suffered from the release of toxic emissions. As a result, the scientists and engineers of the time sought to find alternative methods for energy. Though solar, water, and wind power were used, these methods were still not enough to prevent reliance on materials that destroyed the environment. Aubade was dying, but a solution was found before it's destruction.

Scientists discovered that the Solis's energy could be used to power electric devices. Since direct physical damage did not weaken the effects of a crystal, the population came to realize that using pieces of the Solis was affordable, effective, and efficient. Almost overnight, cities clamored to apply shards of the crystal to power grids. A seven-foot shard could provide more than enough electricity for citizens within a one-hundred-mile radius. Only some isolated towns still had to use primitive methods, such as fossil fuels, for electricity.

The solution worked. Pollution and habitat destruction dropped dramatically within ten years, and the Terra and Aella slowly began to recover from the centuries of damage. The metropoles that benefited from the Solis boomed and grew into sprawling mini-empies, called "sunlight cities", for use of the crystal.

People quickly found out that the crystal's use resulted in the formation of energized waste. Though it was not radioactive or hazardous, it was useless for providing direct energy to citizens. Upon realizing this, the Grand Council ordered that the waste be collected in impermeable tanks and stored deep underground, in case they could find a use for it in the future. With that question answered, people were free to live in great prosperity.

Her brother darkness loves to smite
May he always have great might

One thousand years later, the Solis began to mysteriously dim worldwide. As a result, nights gradually grew longer and electric power was considerably weakened. Aubade poured their efforts into this problem came upon a method of suspending the Solis shards in pools of its liquid waste. This gave some energy back to the crystal and halted the growth of nighttime, but this new source of power depleted faster than the shards could regenerate energy.

Another century passed. The shards had turned a purple hue as a benign side effect of feeding on its byproducts. The overpopulated sunlight cities constantly demanded the Solis' power, resulting in the acceleration and lengthening of night once more. An energy crisis was fast approaching - if the recycled waste was not enough, then what was?

And her children see the bright
Where there is none to fright
As the days grew shorter and colder, the crystal Tenebris expanded in size, feeding on citizens' fear and creating shadowy translucent monsters to terrorize the people and destroy the shards. To combat the new threat, the military was set up inside and around the cities at all times. Pyralis, Maris, Aella, and Terra attempted to neutralize the threat by exercising their own power. Forest fires blazed across overgrown forests, quenched only by massive floods and tsunamis that destroyed villages and damaged coastal sunlight cities. Earthquakes opened massive fissures in the earth and created impassable mountain ranges. The land of Aubade was unbalanced by what the people put their hope, their faith in. Outraged and cynical, massive numbers of Aubadians fled the continent. The people who stayed were desperate to combat the Tenerbris' monsters and restore balance to their land.

Our heroes are members of the Council Vanguard, one of the more newly-formed groups in Lumen's army. It has been a month since the first strange monsters have appeared. As an inexperienced branch, the Council Vanguard has been stationed to regularly patrol an unlikely point of attack - a small chapel surrounded by greenery on the city's outskirts. The Grand Council, once impassive towards the natural disasters and suspicious when questioned for a solution, enlisted this select group of warriors to cut more of the Solaris to power Aubade and neutralize the wrath of Tenebris. They must then travel to the sunlight cities and restoring the Solis to its true power. Scientists predict the Council Vanguard will have 30 days to complete their task before Aubade is plunged into darkness.

THE WORLD OF AUBADE

The world of Aubade is a vast, diverse land scattered with semi-autonomous cities around the entire continent. The structure of each city's government slightly varies, but every mayor is required to attend monthly meetings of the Grand Council in Lumen, the capital. Though the military used to be split by city before the Terra Crisis, every city except Escura has basically united into one main force. These days, the military is mostly used to fend off monsters that sometimes threaten to attack citizens near city limits.

Almost everyone in Aubade has a deist perspective of the world. They mainly believe that some sort of higher being or beings created the crystals to bring life to the world and then left it to run on its own. A small portion of citizens is atheist, believing that the crystals formed by themselves in a natural sequence of events. No matter what people think of creation, ministers and citizens alike offer sacrifices on a voluntary basis to the crystals as thanks for their protection.

Most citizens enjoy more efficient versions of the same luxuries in technology that we do today because they are powered by Solis shards rather than fossil fuels. However, rural towns use the technology that we know because without the Solis's power they cannot advance as quickly. They are seen as primitive societies compared to the sunlight cities. Maglev trains are the main means of long-distance transportation, while subways are found in most urban areas. For shorter distances, people walk, ride horseback, or bike. Guns are only used by the military. Magic can be learned in schools as an elective, and it is taught to military trainees who desire to become mages. Weapons of mass destruction have become obsolete and virtually nonexistent since the times of the Terra Crisis, and the dark arts have been banned ever since Escura closed its borders.

ALYAR
Built into the rock halfway up the lofty Mount Anemos, Alyar takes pride in raising strong, self-sufficient men and women. The cold winds blow freely almost every day, and this city is said to have the cleanest air because of that. Every year, the citizens of Alyar celebrate the hunting season by throwing a huge festival where people can relax and celebrate the bounty of the land.

EDANA
Deep within the harsh Erimos Desert lies the city of Edana. Ever since its Solis shard was brought to the city, its residents have been able to power complex irrigation systems connecting to a nearby oasis, greatly reducing the negative effects of droughts. People on this land have learned to thrive in the heat that the desert brings every day.

ESCURA
Escura is a gigantic bastion surrounded by a great wall on all sides. A thick, magical veil that prevents people from seeing what is inside the city gives off the illusion of dark purple fog to those outside the wall. It was the only major city to refuse to use the Solis, claiming that that would be the worst mistake of human history. Since then, Escura had closed its borders to all but a few neighboring towns. As of now, it is the only city to allow the use of dark magic. It is said that one can truly feel the flow of magic when walking through Escura.

LUMEN
Lumen is the capital city of Aubade. It is a giant metropolis filled with life and diversity, and the sun shines brightly on the golden tan buildings. At the center of the city are the Hall of the Grand Council and the Solis Temple. Wealthy families usually make their home here. The climate is relatively temperate all year round.

MIKANI
Mikani is a sunlight city known most for its large factories that provide materials for many areas of Aubade. It also has a reputation for housing famous scientists and engineers. Most people in this city are of the middle and working class, but a few tycoons who own factories live in mansions at the edge of the area.

RIALTO
Rialto resides at the southernmost peninsula in Aubade. Half of the city functions as a port, transporting goods and the city's famous seafood to and from the other parts of the world. The other half houses the cleanest, most charming resorts along the coast.

SANAT
Sanat is a small town built on an island in the northwest far from the reaches of any Solis shard. Though most non-Solis cities and towns do not have much contact with the rest of the world, Sanat is widely known for raising the greatest artists in Aubade. It makes up for its lack of modern technology with its rich artistic culture.

VIRIDA
In the northern reaches of the lush Suma Forest, a small sunlight city named Virida offers rest for many a weary traveler. The citizens of Virida have an utmost respect of the nature surrounding them, following a philosophy of living off and giving back to the bountiful land. Virida provides most of the fruits and vegetables for the people of Aubade.

THE CRYSTALS

AELLA
The Aella controls the wind and weather. A gentle breeze always blows in its chamber. It is located in a temple at the summit of Mount Anemos. Destruction of this crystal would cause violent winds that never ceased. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes would occur more often with greater intensity.

F1K3gjE.png

MARIS
The Maris controls the behavior and purity of water in the world. It magically moves water from a pool below in mesmerizing patterns. It is located in a temple on the coast near the city of Rialto. Destruction of this crystal would cause water to rapidly fluctuate in level and become poisonous.

2aQKO8A.png

PYRALIS
The Pyralis controls the fire and temperature of the world. Heat radiates from its surface in its sacred chamber. It is located in a temple ten miles outside the city of Edana. Without this crystal, fires would be uncontrollable, and the temperatures would be unlivable - too warm in the day, too cold at night.

PMdTmQ5.png

SOLIS
The Solis controls the light and order in the world. Looking directly at it in its pure form without protection will blind humans. This crystal has been used as a source of energy for around the last thousand years. It has been split into several pieces, and its shards reside in chapels in the sunlight cities. The Solis' largest shard, standing about twenty-five feet tall, is located in a grand temple at the center of Lumen. All known forms of this crystal have become energized with its recycled waste, taking on a neon purple color instead of bright yellow. Destruction of this crystal would cause the night to last forever and for physics to warp out of control.

Pure -- Energized

TENEBRIS
The Tenebris controls the darkness of the world: sleep, sickness, death, and dark magic are among its duties. Staying in the crystal's sacred chamber for too long will lull visitors to nausea and extreme drowsiness, though rumors say that those who survive this effect could be healed of any ailment. It is located in a temple at the heart of Escura. Without this crystal, plagues would run rampant, no one would die or die unexpectedly, and nightmares and curses would terrorize the world.

OgmoYC0.png

TERRA
The Terra controls nature and the ground. A beautiful garden full of colorful flowers grows year-round under it. It is located in a temple in the forest just outside the border of Virida. Destruction of this crystal would cause plants to cease growth and geologic processes to go haywire. This crystal had undergone extreme hardship a thousand years ago, causing it to shrink to half its volume during what is now known as the Terra Crisis. Over the years it has recovered to about seventy-five percent of its healthy size due to humanity's switch to Solis' power.

CHARACTER CLASSES

You must keep in mind the following limitations of each class in your bios and roleplaying posts. Learning a new spell or skill must be cleared by me first. All characters will begin the roleplay at the starting level of their respective class.

  • (0/2) TWO AVAILABLE

A long-range mage who casts elemental offensive spells. Wields some sort of small, enchanted object.

    STATS
    Attack: High
    Defense: High
    Magic Attack: Low
    Magic Defense: Medium
    Speed: Low

CHARACTER FORM

You may decorate your form to any extent you wish, but this is the information that must be present. Delete anything that is not bold.

Username: Self-explanatory but just for reference.
Name:Your character's full first and last name. Include any titles, nicknames, or middle names if they have them.
Gender:Male or female. Ask me for permission if you want to use a trans character or a different gender identity.
Age:The age of this group of soldiers will range from 18-25, no exceptions. Keep in mind for your bios that the minimum age for entering the military is 18. Please no, "is X years old but looks X."
Appearance: Provide a 2-3 paragraph description describing facial features, coloring, build, body type, complexion, and apparel.
Personality: Talk about how your character normally acts. What do they do to make themselves happy? How do they approach a problem or possible solutions? How do they approach emotion or fear? These are questions to keep in mind when writing. 3-4 paragraphs.
Hometown: Because Escura has isolated itself from the Solis-powered cities for centuries, your character must come from any named city other than Escura. Most members of the military are natives of Lumen, but there has lately been a growing minority of soldiers who hail from other Solis-powered cities.
Brief Bio: This should include early childhood, important events, and growth into the person they are today. Remember that every character has entered the military and has been assigned to the Council Vanguard, and all characters are new or mildly proficient in their classes. Classes are assigned upon entry into the military or military academy, but your character may have had practice with their weapon beforehand. If you are a mage, you must already know some basic spells before the beginning of the roleplay. Additionally, your character is not allowed to hold a leadership position in the military. The Brief Bio must be at least ten sentences AND fourteen lines.
Class: Choose from the following starting classes: Black Mage, Knight, Marksman, Thief, Warrior, or White Mage. You may change or upgrade your class at a later point in time.
Weapon(s): One weapon (or set of weapons) must make sense with your class. Your character may also hold a secondary weapon that they are less proficient with. Keep in mind that your character will have to carry these weapons everywhere, so something like two giant hammers won't be allowed due to human limitations.
Other (optional): Text color? MBTI? Theme song?

It's very rare that you see a roleplay that combines magic and modern technologies such as firearms into a single (and thoroughly thought out) setting. Color me intrigued!

(It is also interesting to note that the description of Alyar and Lumen are the same. :33:)

I'm so happy to hear you're interested! I was worried this RP would be too overwhelming, and I'm going to break down my main points after this reply.

I will fix that right away, thanks. ^^

In hindsight I realize how overwhelming the text above may seem, so I will attempt to break down what this is about and some points that need to be kept in mind:

Aubade is a world that uses both magic, modern technology, and medieval technology, because technology is only able to exist because of magic. The technology is slightly more advanced than what we have currently in real life, but more so through application than design. Fossil fuels are obsolete, but smartphones and computers are normal items to possess alongside a sword or a horse-drawn vehicle. Six crystals power the forces of the elements and allow Aubade to sustain life.

The magic used for technology comes from the crystal Solis, which Aubadians started breaking off pieces of once they realized the crystal's energy could be used to replace fossil fuels as a renewable energy source effectively. Aubade is controlled by several metropolitan cities using the most amount of the Solis' energy. It creates a non-toxic waste the Grand Council decides to store for later use.

However, excessive use of energy to accommodate the urbanization of the continent causes the Solis to dim, resulting in the weakening in electricity and for the crystals' balance to be upset.

A solution is found when the Solis' shards are suspended in the crystal's energized byproduct, but it is only delaying the inevitable. The crystals' balance is upset as the Solis continues to shrink and the Tenebris releases its own energy, throwing the world into chaos.

Our characters have been enlisted by the Grand Council to find a solution to restore the Solis before 30 days are up, or the Tenebris absorbs all light on Aubade and the world will be ravaged by catastrophe.

There are six classes to play as. They each have different skill sets, stats, and characteristics.

I believe everything else is self-explanatory. Please mention any questions you may have.

Nothing too extreme, I was thinking a few counts of burglary.

Writing this character is gonna be... fun, to say the least. I'm pumped :coolshades:.

It’s been a while since I wrote stuffs, but this looks really promising. Hope I could make a character in time.

I'm flattered. ^^ I am planning to wait until there are 4-6 people interested and/or have accepted applications before we begin. I'm busy myself, there's no set deadline yet.

In the character class section it says that rogues have medium magic attack. Does that mean they can attack with magic as well as using normal implements such as knifes, firearms, etc. (or am I just being stupid)?

Magic power in the sense of using spells to hide things from view. A more advance spell would to be to alter someone's perception of time or some form of hypnosis.

All classes have magic power, it's just that some classes require more proficiency than others. Knights, for example, may not have had any instruction regarding magic, but they might have the capability to use it if they were trained.

I'll try to stay up until then, I'm also on EST. I would prefer to take a look at your character when I'm wide awake so I can review it to the best of my ability. If I don't review it tonight, the earliest will be 3:00 to 4:00 PM tomorrow.

I'm interested. :^D Can I reserve a knight spot? I was thinking of a character that used a heavy wide sword as a pseudo type shield, which would also play into slow, heavy attacks.

Would that work?

I'm perfectly fine with that. In fact, that'll help with some characterization. I will start working on a concept right now. Hopefully, I'll have something presentable by the evening. I look forward to participating in this project of yours.

Also, is there a specific uniform worn by the soldiers? I'd like to have an idea before I start drawing.
