The Ultimate Stratigist remained silent on the couch, his thoughts racing too much for him to talk. He glanced at Sophie and part of him felt like he ought to comfort her but he just found himself unable to speak. For the first time that he can remember, he actually broke down. He was actually questioning everything he had done up until now and if it was truly even right or if he was nothing more than the coldhearted killer that Monokuma was trying to make everyone here out to be. If he hadn't been so selfish, maybe what he had seen in that video would have been true. If he just dug deeper, tried to understand others more, maybe he ans the Golden Deer students wouldn't have been the only ones to make it through that war. Maybe...truly...everyone would have been able to survive. The reason things ended up how they were was entirely his fault. Somehow, Claude found himself not being as upset about those who didn't beleive in him. Maybe they were right not to. And maybe people like Cater, Marie and Louise shouldn't beleive in him. He was just a selfish man who wanted to end up ruling in the end. Wasn't he...?He glanced up fron his spot when he heard Marie hum. It was a simple tune, yet it was calming. Happy, yet sad. It fit his mood, even though he didn't realize it. He was happy with his reality turning out the way it had, in all truth. Even if it was partially out of selfishness. Fodlan had a new future to look forward to without the influence of the church or the empire. Everyone was free to seek out their own truths and Crests were no longer what defined a person's power. Everyone could now live knowing they had equal opportunities and did not have the pressure of a Crest weighing on their future. Yet he was disappointed. His selfishness had caused others he knew to not make it. Sure, they refused to waver in their own factions. Sure, any outsider would probably say that they couldn't have been saved but Claude still had this lingering feeling that he just never tried hard enough. He found himself humming along to Marie's little tune, right up until it ended.
When Marie finally finished and voiced how she wanted to help them. Claude couldn't help but smile. Even if he was selfish, the bonds he made here still were true. For some reason he got the vibe that they may not even care about that. Or...at least Marie didn't. Her words truly made him feel that she wanted to help them no matter what else was attached. He slowly stood up and walked over to his new friend.
"Thanks for that." he said simply, giving a light smile to the girl. "It just feels nice to be assured that there's others who care. And that will probably keep caring no matter what. At least...I hope so..."
His confidence wavered again. He found himself unable to keep that confident sona as strongly as he used to. Would they really still want to help if they knew he was probably selfish and costef all those lives...?
