INTRO

Art by Demizu Posuka!

In order to foster creativity, I'm not going to go overboard with the rules. Just remember these rules/pieces of lore while you make your familiar!

1. Animal and human familiars have a bit of magic innate to being in a bond with a witch, but they’re nowhere near as powerful as them.
2. Witches and familiars are formed by contract, and with the formation of a contract, the two parties will be able to pull from each other's magic and gain strength from their bond. Contracts cover everything from business deals to lifelong unions.
3. Bonds are formed at the consent of both parties, so while you can be coerced into a bond, you cannot be forced into one or put into a bond without your knowing.
4. Familiars can be animal, human, fae, demonic entity, pretty much anything you can think of, but remember: familiars are forced to be subservient to their witch in order to carry out their end of a contract, so an all-powerful, all-knowing being probably wouldn’t have much need or want to enter into one.
5. Witches and familiars are bonded until their contract is up, and cannot be unbound until then, even by death.
6. A witch can have multiple familiars at once, though most only have one.
7. All faceclaims must be drawn to keep things aesthetically cohesive, but you can also provide a description if you can't find a faceclaim that matches what you have in mind. PROVIDE CREDIT!

How we doing RPNation nation

I love fantasy rps but I never see anything about the poor folks in the fantasy world that get the short end of the stick, a.k.a. familiars, humans and the similarly magically-challenged! Personally, I love an underdog story, and that's exactly who this story will surround! I'm super excited since this is my first RP in a while where I'm GMing! That being said, pls be nice if I mess something up lol

1. Rpn rules, be respectful, no godmodding, etc. etc. etc.
2. Discord is required; there’s going to be a lot of plotting, so be warned.
4. In regards to posts, advanced literacy is required. I have trouble getting out long posts so no paragraph requirement, just give us something to work with. In the same vein (kinda), there won’t be any requirements on how often you post, just tell us if you’re not gonna be able to post for a while.
5. This will not be first come first served, and I only have seven slots open for this RP. One slot per person (unless we don’t get much interest).
6. Please read everything on the interest check before asking questions. I'll provide more rules about the characters when the CS thread goes up.
7. Have fun! I have faith in you guys to be creative and not do anything dumb. I’m not a tyrant when it comes to GMing so feel free to come to me if you have a suggestion or issue.

Divination Witch - Open

He was one of the most talented fortune tellers of his time, able to read the future in anything from a crystal ball to sunlight shining through gaps in the treetops. He owned and slept in the Lotus Athenaeum, an endlessly winding library and archive who’s halls he wandered restlessly. He spent his days and nights attempting to decode its countless precious old tomes, relying on his familiar to retrieve records for him and climb into hard to reach places, as well as act as emotional support.

Portal Witch - Closed

Born into wealth, she was raised on her parents' little private island. A 9th generation Asphodel witch, she often dreamed of seeing the whole world through the use of portals and teleportation. Unfortunately, her talent was paltry compared to her passion; however, no matter how many times she failed, she would always try again. Her familiar was at her side throughout it all, even if it meant acting as her guinea pig in her attempted spells and rituals.

Conjuring Witch - Open

She was once a great gladiator, who used her power of conjuring creatures from other plains to entertain crowds of hundreds as she fought them tooth and nail. In her old age this hobby fell to the wayside. For many years she’s been living in an old, eccentric mansion, now only ever conjuring spirits to have tea and a talk, and occasionally beasts for a scratch behind the ears. Her familiar has been at her side throughout it all, a dear friend for their witch to rely on.

Alchemy Witch - Open

He always dreamed of more, growing up in a poor family and eventually moving into a cramped apartment in the city, situated right above a train line. A student of transmutation, he studied restlessly for the ability to transform anything or anyone, from animal to element, into whatever he desired. He was over the moon when he received his familiar, adoring them for the prestige and companionship they provided.

Death Witch - Open

Miles away from society, she lived secluded in a hut on the edge of a swamp, in the thick heart of Asphodel woods. While she never had much in life, she was happy; all she needed was a steady supply of death and dead materials to fuel her necrotic magic to keep her satisfied. She was never too close to her familiar, using them mostly as a tool to go out and retrieve spell materials.

Element Witch - Open

He had the ability to shape the world around him to his desires, with control over fire, air, water and earth. Born without a committed bone in his body, he slept in a houseboat floating on the shores of Asphodel, content to just row away whenever he was discovered by the law or (responsibility). He made his way through life scamming and pick-pocketing, with his familiar acting as his partner in crime.

Charm Witch - Open

A gifted enchanter, he could pull anyone under his control with a simple spell. While he had no business being near the queen, a rogue and a rascal by heart, he always had an eye for the ornate and the valuable, so he charmed his way to the top in order to live in an apartment in one of the luxurious towers in the queen’s citadel. As adroit as he was shallow, he regarded his familiar as little more than a status symbol and a pet (regardless of species).

Illusion Witch - Open

A cunning saleswoman raised with little, she dedicated every day of her life to working as hard as she could for a good life. She lived directly above the sales district, where she could sell her wares (potions, usually sold second-hand from artisan witches, including the necro witch) nearby with the help of her illusion magic. She was able to deform and bend the world around her in the eyes of her customers, changing the perceptions of their sight, hearing, even smell and taste. She often had a hard time keeping her head above water, and she credits her success to her familiar, who was always there to help sell.

Abjuration Witch - Open

Most abjuration magic is used by police and criminals, using this ability to counter and tear away the magic of others; instead of going down that route, she worked as a teacher at a magic school, snatching away powers from overzealous witchlings at risk of doing harm. She’s lived alongside her familiar for many years, leaning on them as a teacher’s assistant and helping her out with her own family.

Animancy Witch - Open

His family moved to Asphodel only months ago in hopes of healing his ailing human father; unfortunately, he passed away shortly after, leaving his family alone with a large sum of wealth. This witch was given a familiar to ease his pain, but despite his family’s best efforts, he’s only retreated into himself, finding comfort in studying the dark art of Animancy, control over the soul, the body and it’s functions. His family has been seeing less and less of him for weeks, so only he and his familiar know what he’s been practicing lately.

identifying features

In the solid black of his outer visage, little stands out besides his glowing, golden eyes.

Apparel

When he’s at home he wears only a ribbon around his neck, but out on the town, he wears dresses intended for his owner’s porcelain dolls. Years of attending her tea parties and being subjected to hours-long photoshoots has given him a fondness for fancy dress.

Born and raised in the lap of luxury, Panpepato has come to expect the best in life, whether it be fresh Acqua pazza on a silver platter or smooth silk pillows to sleep on at night. He’s not too arrogant to accept the more auster in life, and he enjoys the occasional romp chasing butterflies, but if he can, he prefers to keep his paws clean. Like any self-respecting cat, he takes great pride in his appearance, making sure he always looks presentable; he can be a bit of a dandy. Having spent a majority of his life on the island, he can be a bit naive to the outside world, but he doesn’t lack curiosity in exploring it. If danger presents itself however, he’s quick to run back into the safe arms of his owners; with a tendency to sweat the smallest details and allow his imagination to run away from him, he’s the worrywart counterpart to his reckless witch. Despite the many trials she may put him through, he remains endlessly loyal to her throughout it all. He also tends to be a bit conflict-avoidant.

Panpepato’s refinement and intelligence reflects the high class family he was raised into, a cat of taste and culture. He always acts with respectable manners and attempted elegance for an animal; he even studied for a few years alongside his witch, picking up lessons from her private tutors on days he was allowed to sit in on sessions. Despite everything he’s learned and his connection with magic, he still tends to be superstitious, even for an island inhabited by the supernatural.

Abilities: Pan receives little to no usable magical knowledge from his connection to his witch, but he has learned a bit of teleportation magic from being her study companion. If he focuses, he is able to picture a place he would like to teleport, without being able to appear there in person, or teleport there; it’s a very fuzzy image, but he can somewhat sense the surroundings and any presences in the area.

h

istory

Panpepato was raised alongside and by his witch, Maria Cocchetti. He remembers little of his early childhood, only knowing secondhand that he was born in a city pet shop and sold a short while later, with no remaining knowledge of his mother or siblings. His earliest memory is having his neck wrapped in a bow and placed in a wooden basket; the earliest face he remembers is that of his Maria, 10 years old, squealing with delight at the sight of her brand new kitten. For 5 years, the pair have grown up side by side as best of friends. Born into wealth, Maria grew up with every necessity and luxury she could ask for always within reach, except for the company of other people. Isolated on her parent’s little private island, she was attended to by maids and butlers, cooked for by private chefs and taught by tutors, but Panpepato was her only close companion. She was never taken to the mainland often; as years of tutoring and intense private study revealed, she had broken the pattern of her family tree, filled with powerful sorcerers and multi-talented witches, with little magical ability of her own to speak of. She was a talented student, speaking three languages by the time she was twelve, could solve complex equations from the top of her head, but at magic, she was utterly talentless. What she learned she could never apply, and what power she did have she had no power over. Attempted spells ended in disaster as often as they did in duds. Ashamed, her parents kept her on the island away from society, dedicating her days to learning magic, in hopes of one day having a child they’d be proud to carry on the family legacy. Unsatisfied with her day to day life, Maria would retreat into fantasy for hours at a time during the day and drift off early in the evening, just to dream she was somewhere other than the island. When she was twelve years old, she decided to follow teleportation and transportation magic, hopeful that one day she could use it to travel the world outside Asphodel. It was at the same time that she decided to form a bond with Panpepato and make him not only her pet, but her familiar. While Maria knew of many powerful witches with familiars, she hoped merely making a bond would help her to get a hold of her powers, Pan wanted only the best for his owner, and hoped with his guidance he could lead her to be a great witch.

Now able to communicate, the two became even closer friends, the only two in the world the other could rely on. He would remain endlessly loyal to his witch, even when he became the focus group to her magical experiments. Maria’s parents often rely on him to keep her in check, though he supports her pipe dreams of being a great witch in secret.

-=FAMILIAR OF THE ILLUSION WITCH=-

dogg.jpgName: Pascal
Gender/Pronouns: Male - He/Him/They/It
Species: Doggo! (Mostly?)
Role: Illusion Witch's Familiar (AKA, Doggo)
Art Credit: @goma_lee / Le Yamamura (twitter)
Origin: France
Languages: English, some French

Appearance
A tiny dog with very well hidden body anatomy, he is the definition of fluff. It doesn't seem to bother him though. He will run full speed without a care in the world, leaving behind a trail of hair. Though, depending on if he sees you as a possible customer, he will actually gain the guise of whichever dog breed is the person's favorite. He still keeps the same eyes, however, no matter what the illusion is. He has hints of black on the ends of his limbs, nose, and ears. His canines usually poke out of his snout, though it isn't certain if he can help it. No one really knows his breed.

Identifying Features
He has a stupid amount of hair that is usually all over the place when he's around. Somehow it seems like it never ends, unless someone wanted to shave him of course... He also has huge green eyes that shimmer in a strange way, along with huge ears. Locals usually recognize the puffball, and go out of their way to pet him. Besides, his hair makes GREAT fertilizer!

Personality Overview
- Loyal to a fault, empathetic, curious, optimistic, quick to comfort
- A little bit too pushy, lacks some situational awareness, nosey

This doggo really enjoys socializing with everyone and anyone when he can, and quickly forms bonds with people. And though he is quick to trust, his instincts about people are pretty accurate. Others have tried to manipulate him, and if he's ever in question, he'll usually ask Ponde about them. Which usually prompts Ponde to induce horrifying illusions for people trying to manipulate Pascal. Outside of this, he is cheery and positive, and lives very much in the present. He will always wordlessly offer his presence to people going through negative emotions, even if they lash out at him. He is quick to forgive, and give the benefit of the doubt. Furthermore, he has a nose for the unknown, and will sometimes venture to parts of the city he has never been.

He isn't easily scared, but is not keen about threats. He's quick to run if someone gets angry at him, especially because he's a dog. Not only that, but he sometimes sticks his nose where he's not supposed to. He can be slow to learn as well, and usually won't learn a lesson unless there are obvious consequences. He does his best though, and will sacrifice from his life to ensure the people he cares about are safe. Should someone he likes or loves be put in danger, he loses his fear and becomes a fierce protector.

EVILKAT.jpgAbilities
(Pictured is an illusion of what Pascal sees cats as)

- Pascal's fur is a magical sponge, so not only does magic keep his fur silky, it can easily ward off weak magic. The stronger the magic gets, the more risk for the doggo. Illusion magic works a bit differently; Pascal uses his coat to bounce magic off of the illusion, giving it some physical presence. Almost like how greenhouse gases trap gases in the atmosphere, Pascal's magic coat allows the illusion magic to intensify the more it lingers on him. This means that he is able to maintain an illusion almost indefinitely, and reinforces it. However, because it is an illusion, physical interference will cause it to dissipate with little trouble. Not to mention, it supposedly 'gets itchy' after a while, according to Pascal. Another issue occurs if he is injured while the illusion is up, either by magical or physical means. It will cause the illusion to disappear, but with a big flood of 'smoke' that obscures his surroundings. It is assumed this is a self-defense mechanism.

- Pascal can also cast some illusion magic on himself, but it is based on his experiences. For instance, if he becomes well acquainted with a horse, he can conjure an illusion based on his experiences with horses. Which means, it may actually look scarier or not, depending on his point of view. Cats, for instance, terrify him. So the illusion of a cat would look monstrous. Meanwhile, other dogs are just as dopey, unless they attack him.

ponde.jpgBrief History
(Pictured is Ponde, the Illusion Witch (Credit: TerraTerrific / Cyanus Corvus))

As a puppy, Pascal was the 'street dog' of a small French town. He was born on the street, though not by typical means. He and his mother were actually being tended to by a witch, Ponde, who began to nurture his mother when she realized the dog was pregnant. Initially, Pascal was born hairless. Or, at least, with very patchy fur. This concerned the witch, who concocted a potion for months while the puppies grew. It took her ages, ingredients a struggle to find. Finally, she brought it to the pup in question. He was skittish initially, but upon receiving her gift, he immediately gained his confidence back. He was running around with his brothers, sometimes even too fluffy now. But he preferred it that way.

From then on, he became attached to the witch, who had often confided in him. One of her biggest aspirations was to bring her illusion magic somewhere useful. Her mother had raised her away from the rest of witch society, but because she fled Ponde knew there was a place she might be accepted. She made plans after saving up, and made the big move when Pascal was around 3 years old. Ponde decided to bring the little dog with her to Asphodel, especially after she found him to have magical properties. They explored the new witchy world together, with her barely staying afloat with the rent prices. However, they both learned even more about her abilities. Immediately upon learning about familiars, Ponde quickly bonded with Pascal. He was ecstatic to finally talk to Ponde, and they were fast friends. Ponde would sometimes sacrifice her meals to feed Pascal when rent was tight, which made his determination to help her business flourish ever greater.

He became somewhat proficient in magic, practicing his abilities every day. He learned that people were inclined to see him as whatever dog breed they treasured most, which meant they were more inclined to support the small business that supported him. Ponde would create spectacle after spectacle as well, continuously moved by her partner's positive outlook. She would sell fun illusions-in-a-bottle, pranks, and all sorts of interesting illusionary accessories. Ever wanted to look like an cow? Ponde could do that! But she always made sure to express her disclaimer: Effects are not permanent. She still had to front as a potion shop, but for the curious and bold, she'd reveal some of her prototypes. It was her wish to be able to fully branch away, but she just didn't have enough inventory to do that yet...

In her humanoid form, XingXing isn’t very mobile due to the bottom half of her body being a tail. However, she does have hands to write down things and she has the upper body to trick people into believing she’s human. In her goldfish form, XingXing has beautiful red scales, glassy black eyes, and moves around via an enchanted glass ball filled with water that her witch provided her.

XingXing has a selkie coat that resembles a kimonoβ€”however, she only wears this before turning into a goldfish. When she intends to stay in her half-human form, she wears a cream-colored silk shirt with puffed sleeves and a silk blanket over her legs. She wears exclusively silk, because everything else irritates her skin and scales. If she has to move, she crawls across the floor.

    PSYCHE

XingXing is a very admirable Goldfish Selkie, as her most notable traits are her strong work ethic and her loyalty. She has the standard abilities of a goldfish selkies: the ability to change between a mermaid-esque form and a goldfish form, a soothing singing voice, and adaptability to both fresh water and ocean water. However, she lacks the ability to perform magic herself. She may not have the same abilities as other familiars, but she is fully dedicated to her work. She is fully devoted to her witch, as she believes she owes him her life. She has no interests other than helping out the elemental witch.

The Abjuration Witch's Familiar
Orin
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…
Male | Wolpertinger/ Nature Sprit
Familiar | Teacher Assistant
500+ yrs | 121cm long | 35kg
Overview
Orin is a Wolpertinger, a type of nature spirit. His master is a retired police officer, named Gabriella Di Fazio, who also happened to be the descendant of his first witch, Niccolo Di Fazio. Orin’s current occupation is comparatively less dangerous than in the past. Instead of fighting templars and criminals, he deals with disobedient young witches sent to his master’s school. He usually lets Gabriella do the actual work, while he naps in a warm spot by the window.
Appearance

Orin is an amalgamation of several different animals. His overall shape resembles a floppy eared rabbit, with deer antlers at the front of his ears. He has a long fluffy tail which resembles a squirrel’s. The other noticeable aspect is his size. Orin is as big as a medium sized dog, weighing about 35kg, and growing, as Gabriella would complain. When he stands, he is around 121cm, and towers over most coffee tables and chairs. He could peek over a standard dining table, and steal a treat with his vine.

His black wings are usually tucked behind his back. The black feathers would speckle green in the dark. When stretched, his wingspan would measure around 4 meters.

He has two pairs of eyes, the main pair resembling rabbit eyes, while the smaller pair above resembles that of a raven. Like all wolpertingers in legend, Orin does have a canine set of teeth, instead of rabbit teeth.
Personality

Orin enjoys a quiet life that isn’t dissimilar to living as a house cat. He only wants savour the simple pleasures of life before his curse kills him. He would be seen lazing around the Di Fazio mansion, tending to the gardens, napping in the sunniest spots, snacking on treats served to him on an hourly schedule. Hardly the image of a familiar who had a reputation of fending off templars, and even in recent years, gangs and serial killers.

Orin has had several masters in his long life, and is very familiar with human ways. Both the good, and the bad. Orin was lucky to have a kind and powerful master at the start of his life. It has shielded him from the abuses a familiar could experience. While his later masters never lived up to the first - until Gabriella came along, he still had good relationships with them. He used to have a more optimistic outlook on the relationship between familiars and witches, until he fell into the hands of a cruel witch. After experiencing the depths of human deprivation, it has soured his view on witches and humans as a species. Orin is wary of strange humans, and even their familiars, who are bound by their master’s commands. He still maintains friendliness and politeness, but it would take awhile to win his heart, for both witches and familiars alike.

Being an old familiar, and from a prestigious family who spoils him, Orin can be forthright in his demands and opinions. He can be particularly touchy if witnessing a witch mistreating their familiar. He is aware of the effect of his bluntness, but doesn’t care for others feelings, especially not abusers. This rubs other witches and familiars the wrong way, as some witches expect familiars to be subservient. There were several instances that Gabriella had to smooth over conflicts which Orin had created.

Orin is very loyal to the Di Fazio family, as he views it is his duty to watch over Niccolo’s descendants. He also feels indebted to the family over the centuries, as they always have treated him well, and never betray him. As the years went by, he had appreciated this trait more. He doesn’t hesitate to resort to violence if one member is in danger, especially his own witch.

Gabriella is the sole guiding force in Orin’s life. Wherever Gabriella went Orin would follow. Whatever decision she makes, he would stand by it. He has accepted that his life would end once Gabriella dies. Yet, it was his own witch who still persisted in trying to find ways to remove his curse. He couldn’t help but believe in the sliver of hope, infected by his witch’s optimism.

Gabriella’s disappearance has led to a darker change in his everyday mood. No longer he was being carefree and lazy. The familiar would often stare at images of Niccolo Di Fazio, and then disappear for hours or days, presumably searching for his missing master. The rest of the Di Fazio family and their familiars steer clear of him, as the anger boiling inside of him, could still be felt, save for his only friend -- the familiar of Gabriella's father, Medusa.
Background

Orin was first summoned into the human plane in 1520, by a young boy named Niccolo Di Fazio. Orin didn’t take too kindly to being summoned at first, but the boy’s enthusiasm caught on. He also grew curious about the human world. The smell of the ocean, the bustling markets, structures crafted by hand, baked goods - these were all intriguing to a young wolpertinger.

The pair travelled for the next twenty years, up to the north to Scotland, east to the Ottoman empire, and south to Egypt and Libya. They met the Celts in Scotland, and witches with lineages tracing back to Ramesses II in Egypt. Both witch and familiar grew through their adventures, as they both share their moments of triumphs and hardships. They became tight and inseparable, almost like brothers from different worlds.

When Niccolo and Orin returned to Italy in around 156o, the tides for the magical world had changed. The freedom of thought from the Renaissance gave way to a fear mongering Roman Inquisition. Niccolo’s mother, and several relatives, were persecuted and burned at the stake. It pushed Niccolo to become the head of the family.

It was around this time that Niccolo heard of witches moving to an archipelago west of Sicily. He decided to follow their path, and leave the home he grew up in to settle in this new sanctuary island for witches. The Di Fazio became one of the first witch families to establish themselves in the islands which would later be named Asphodel. Niccolo helped establish law and order on the island, and within generations, the family became known as a line of judges, lawyers, and police.

The later half of Niccolo’s life was peaceful. Orin was still by his master’s side, and watched him as he went through the different phases of life. He became a constant presence for Niccolo’s children, as they saw him as a spirit uncle.

Eventually, all mortal lives came to an end, even for a powerful witch like Niccolo. After Niccolo’s death, Orin returned to the spirit realm. The only remnant of him in the human plane was a feather which he gave Niccolo, as a gift once. It was preserved in an enchanted box, and buried with the Patriarch of the Di Fazio family. He was periodically summoned by Niccolo’s descendants, to aid them in their time of need. Soon, he was seen by them as a protector of the family. His image was even adopted as the family’s coat of arms. Even a shrine was built dedicated to him. While Orin never again had a close bond among the descendants, he was touched by their gestures.

It was a sunny day in the spirit realm, when Orin could feel the familiar tug, signaling a summon. The sensation confused, however, as it wasn’t the formal summoning rites past Di Fazio family members had used. It was a pure call of companionship, the way Niccolo had done. He could almost see the silhouette of the caller through the veil, the figure of a small child, almost a spitting image of Niccolo from centuries past. Orin smiled, and wondered if it was a simple curiosity which led to the child to attempt to summon him.

He took a step forward towards the translucent curtain, but he would never make a second step.

Chains suddenly burst from the grass, and dragged him though the ground. Once he emerged from the other side, Orin found himself bound to a concrete floor in the basement. The stench had already given away what kind of a witch had just summoned him. In the edges of the room, bodies of humans and animals, thin as skeletons and deformed in strange proportions. Orin struggled against the ethereal chains.

The witch who summoned him seemed entertained by his struggles. She looked young, in her teens, yet from her demeanour Orin sensed it wasn’t her true age. She introduced herself, in a quiet and polite voice, as Marisol, and she needed Orin’s assistance. She hoped he was strong enough, as the other familiars weren’t strong enough. Orin took a quick look around the bodies, and immediately declined.

A sudden pain coursed through his body. Orin could feel as his heart was being crushed. It was then he spotted something familiar in her hand – a feather from his own wing, the one he had gifted Niccolo, and was later buried with him. Orin snarled at the witch, realising that the witch had desecrated Niccolo’s tomb.

Yet, that was all he could do. Marisol continued to torture him until he relented, and formed a contract with her. He was so delirious at that point, that he couldn’t remember what the terms were. The outcome was, Marisol had what she wanted, a powerful familiar which could enhance her own, and be a weapon itself.

Orin lived through the times with Marisol, as if he were sleepwalking. He remembered cries of terror from far away. Was it Marisol torturing and killing, or was it him who did it. There were nights when Orin was aware of himself leeching the life of his victims. He screamed internally, yet his will was no longer him to stop. His magic and Marisol’s had become intertwined, that it had changed him from a small Wolpertinger, to a large beast of monstrosity - with feet bigger than his former size, and towering the largest carriage. His roots grew wild on his back, and they have their own will.

Marisol grew overconfident and greedy, drawing more and more power on the souls she collected. It wasn’t long before she attracted the attention of the police force in Asphodel, and the Di Fazio family.

One evening, in his cell where Marisol left him, he could feel a warm touch on his cheek. A piece of his past life stirred from his deep slumber.
β€œNiccolo?” he asked in disbelief, staring up to the silhouette of his former master.

β€œNo, my name is Gabriella. But it’s you, isn’t it? Orin. I knew it’s you,” said a feminine voice. β€œFather said he didn’t believe the stories. But none of us could summon you, and the feather is gone. A powerful witch appears out of nowhere. I knew it had you.I’m sorry it took us this long. What has she done to you?”
β€œYou should leave,” said Orin. His senses returned to him after so many years. The girl had fooled him to be Niccolo. She had the same hair, and the same eyes, if it weren’t for her feminine features, Orin would have thought Niccolo had risen from the dead. Yet, he couldn’t risk her being in this dungeon, not with Marisol around.

β€œNo, we came here for you. I’m not going to leave this place without you,” Gabriella insisted.

She had her hand over his head, Orin could sense her examining the intertwining threads of magic within him. Orin couldn’t help but be comforted in her presence. In the sphere of magic, he could tell her signature apart from Niccolo’s, yet he was drawn to it, as he was centuries ago. He realised he had sensed her years ago, moments before he was yanked into this existence.

β€œIt was you,” he said.
Gabriella paused, then answered, knowing what he meant. β€œYes, it was me. I was seven. I’ve heard stories of you, and I wanted to meet you. So I attempted to summon you. I thought I'd sensed you, and then you disappeared. If only I did it sooner, you wouldn’t have been here.”
β€œIt doesn’t matter. You’re here now.”
β€œDoes that mean you don’t want me to leave?”
β€œNo, I’d still rather you leave. It’s dangerous here.”
β€œI didn’t come by alone. Father and Medusa are taking care of the dark witch,” she said with certainty.
Comforted by the thought, Orin relaxed, for the first time in years.

β€œKill her.”

Marisol spoke from behind them.

Orin could feel his limbs not moving on his own will. He rose, and loomed over Gabriella. He could feel the pull of the fog over his mind. He shook, and resisted, eventually letting out a screeching roar.

β€œWhat are you doing? Obey me!”

Orn could feel the fabric of his being tearing, as he disobeyed his master. His vines reached for Gabriella. He pulled himself back, away from her. He could hear Marisol screaming curses and spells at Gabriella, who fought back.
He thrashed himself in the corner. It was a battle against himself, the side who wished death on all, born from despair. The one who thought his life will forever be in darkness. He could feel someone being thrown at him. He looked down. It was Gabriella, being knocked out.

β€œWhat are you waiting for?” demanded Marisol.

Once again, her command attempted to take hold. But years of anger bubbling inside him had given him strength to resist.

β€œYou had your chance of killing her. And yet, you want me to do it? You are cruel,” he snarled.

He stepped in front of Gabriella, shielding her from Marisol. Every fiber of his rage wanted to tear the dark witch apart, but he could only stand before her in defiance. Their bond only thing protecting her.

Her own angry face had turned into one of delight. β€œYou can stand here for as long as you want, but eventually, you will be unable to resist my will. I forgot how defiant you were. How entertaining you have been, while you resist the inevitable. Niccolo Di Fazio did summon a powerful familiar, and I have no regrets stealing from his grave.”

He lunged at her. Ethereal chains and hands appear from the ground, pinning his giant monstrous form down. As he struggled, Marisol smirked and said,
β€œLet’s watch how long you could resist your master’s order, until you falter.”

She took a step forward, and fell. There was a snake on her ankle, another familiar. The viper injected her lethal venom, infused with magic. Even a powerful dark witch like Marisol had no resistance against it.

Orin crumbled to the ground like a puppet with his strings cut. He lay there, feeling his own life seeping away. Was this part of his contract with Marisol? He could recall Gabriella speaking to him, voice of a man and possibly a familiar, and others, before he sunk into the darkness. He died, knowing that Niccolo’s descendants still cared, or so he thought.

Orin woke up to find himself in a soft human bed. He looked around. He had been in the Di Fazio mansion enough times to recognise this was one of their rooms. It used to belong to one of Niccolo’s sons. The third one perhaps? The decor showed time had passed. There were items he didn’t recognise. The colours were also pastel green and blue. There was also a flowery scent in the air.

He was suddenly tackled by a wheat-haired person.

β€œNiccolo?” he asked.
β€œGabriella, you silly bunny. You still think you’re in the past.”

β€œI thought I was in the afterlife,” said he. It was then he noticed that he was back to his original form, with Gabriella comfortably wrapping her arms around him. β€œI’m back to normal?”
He blinked. Gabriella was more apparent to him. He could feel the flow of her magic, similar but not the same as Niccolo’s. A huge concentration around where his heart was, wounding around the beast which remained in him. Her emotions were open to him, he could read her like a book. They had formed a contract, with both doors wide open. Orin remembers swearing his life and his will, only to be chastised to be not so dramatic, while Gabriella swore she would find a way to rid of Marisol’s influence and return him to the spirit realm.

β€œI’ve sealed that side of you. As long as you don’t use Death magic, or try to become the beast, you will be fine.”
Orin shuddered. β€œI don’t think that would come to pass.”
β€œWe hope not.”

Gabriella turned 18 in the next year, and joined the police, much to her father’s disapproval - he wanted her to have a safe desk job like a lawyer. However, she wanted to follow his footsteps.

With Gabriella’s wit and Orin’s ferocity, the duo made waves in the Asphodel crime fighting scene. They solved many high profile and dangerous cases in their active years.

After a number of years, Gabriella chose to retire from the police. The retirement came as a surprise, as she was still in her mid-thirties. She decided to open a school for reforming young delinquent witches, with her newfound passion of steering misguided youth to the right path.

Orin became her teacher assistant. Although how much assisting he did was up to debate, as he would often contradict the text books, especially on the early days of Asphodel. Gabriella’s students had taken a great liking to the outspoken and rebellious familiar. A few had approached him for advice and mentorship, instead of their teacher. Gabriella often credits Orin for her school’s success, as he could connect with the students in a way she couldn’t.

The familiar has a perch in the classroom, with a comfortable bed, and a platform for biscuits and cake. Every morning, he would be in his bed, lazily munching on his sweet treat, as Gabriella starts the class.

However, one morning, the students arrived to see Gabriella nowhere, and her familiar not in his usual spot. He sat on the teacher’s desk, looking up at the portrait of Gabriella’s ancestor, Niccolo. There was something off about Orin. Even though he was still, his shadow seemed to flicker and grow. There was a dark pressure in the room that was palpable. It wasn’t until one of the braver students dared to call Orin, that he abruptly changed his demeanour, back to the cheerful, carefree Wolpertinger familiar they knew.
Abilities
Magical Enhancement: Orin is a type of nature spirit with the rare ability to enhance another user's magic. He could tap into the energy of the surrounding environment, act like a funnel, and channel it into another user's magical abilities, amplifying and strengthening their spells. The effects of this ability can vary depending on the strength of the witch, and his bond with them. In some cases, it can grant the witch the ability to cast spells that are normally beyond their capabilities.
Flight: Ability to fly with his wings.
Flora Command: Being a nature attuned creature, Orin is able to grow and control plants. Many attributed the Di Fazio family’s spectacular gardens to Orin’s influence. Orin can summon roots to aid him in battle. Due to his witch's abjuration affinity, the plants Orin summons could negate basic spells and charms. His most common use is to summon vines with the ability to disable witches.
Dispel: Given his time with the Di Fazio family, Orin is capable of dispelling common enchantments and curses.
Breath of Hypnos: Orin is able to release a breath that causes others to fall asleep. Whether one is magical or non-magical affects how much immunity one has against it.
Breath of Paralysis: Release poison from his breath, which paralyses his target. The dose amount controls how long the effect lasts. A low dose would make a person feel tingly, a high dose could cause death.
Life Stealing: A leftover from Marisol’s influence. Orin can draw on the life force of other living creatures to enhance his own abilities. Outside of Marisol’s power hungry demands, Orin has never had the need to use this. And he would prefer not to, as tapping into Death Magic will leak Grabriella’s seal on him. With enough usage, he will turn into a mad, large creature that needs to be put down.
Beast of Death: Once Orin’s seal breaks, he would turn into a creature twice the height of a horse carriage, around 5 meters tall. His form becomes skeletal, with large claws, and vines covering his back. The vines move on their own, as if they have their own mind. His raven wings turn into a leathery bat's. Orin would gradually lose his sanity in this form, and become a mindless beast without his witch as an anchor.

Conjuring Witch
I'll likely not be able to flesh this out by the deadline, but at least the general idea exists outside of my head now.

Name: Funestus
Age: 113
Gender|Pronouns: Female|She/her
Species: King Cobra Dragon
Role: Companion; Previously Training Partnet

Appearance:
azBGQZifq__LhdeFK7xNaFGo3uStnN2HZOqEEz0WPSOX54CB1s41R7VtIT-IxAOGtgaqzeKtyjSbocVyeobpzKsBs3BUJOXUyap9UpfBrHyXPKcQPJ9OpmH8nhcXjVwRL9uhNPvsglSAsQTHAegZyRg

Identifying features:
Size: towering overhead even when laying down, Funestus’s size is often the first thing people notice about her. With a length of 20 meters and a wingspan of 30m, she is unmissable.
Eye Spots: Each Cobra Dragon has unique eyespots under their frill.

Personality overview: As proud as a cat, Funestus doesn’t acknowledge those beneath her, except to hiss if they get close. She loves Mevia and would only allow her to lean against her soft underbelly. She enjoyed sparring with her witch, but understands her lifespan is short, so is happy to lounge around the house now that they’re retired.

Abilities
Size Reduction: Due to her witch’s magic, she can shrink small enough to fit in a house. She still has to be careful with her wings and tail, but their house is spacious enough that it’s rarely a problem.
Venomous bite
Strength
Scaled and horned hide
: that’s near inpentetrable.
Conjuration: can conjure low-level creatures, but rarely uses it, especially now that they’re retired

Brief history:
Mevia was like a feral cat in those days. Ready to fight anything. To be honest, that hasn’t changed, even with retirement. She was working on her conjuration, but instead of the adult King Cobra Dragon she was hoping for, the teenager summoned a pup. Funestus did not want to fight the warrior woman in front of her, and when she’d exclaimed she’d summoned a child, the dragon saw an opportunity. β€œAh, but I will grow. With your magics, I would grow faster. And then I can be your companion. And we shall spar whenever you want.” The young pup had not yet lived a century, but she knew she would live many more than that. Humans, even witches rarely passed it. Growing up quickly was well worth it for her.

Mevia took a moment to think about it. She knew how difficult training with an adult King Cobra would be. But she also knew she could gain other benefits. That scaled hide could be a last resort. For the conjurer wanted to fight, to become the strongest, but she did not want to die. β€œAgreed. For as long as I fight.” At the dragon’s nod, the contract was made.

The two of them grew stronger together. They became gladiators, Mevia conjuring monsters and beasts, first, they took them on together, but then they were strong enough to take them on individually. For decades, it was a great life: they’d fight during the day and relax at night. With the two of them, nothing could beat them.

One would think that now that she was retired, the contract was fulfilled, but Funestus knew better. Mevia was still fighting. Now it was her own body that had turned against her, but still, she fought. With potions and a will of steel, she held back the cancer within her. This time Funestus could not guard her back. This time being at her side sometimes felt like nothing. This fight was harder than any before.

But when she woke, unable to find Mevia anywhere. Only able to smell her lingering scent in the air, Funestus knew something was wrong. Her witch would not have left without her. Not only did she know that she wanted to stay by her side, but she could not walk the distance to the towns any longer. Instead, she and Funestus would fly. Something was very wrong.
Witch: Mevia

Stupid "Amira" Bird
20 years old | Kitsune Female | Alchemy Familiar

"Oo, shiny~! This is mine now. As a mystical kitsune, I need it for… spiritual thingies!"

Shiny objects
"Gimmie!"

Humanoid form
"Did you know people are less likely to whack you with a broom when you look like them?"

Prestige
"Show me your respect and tribute your shinies!"

Mud
"Ugly, and brings back horrible memories."

Roads
"How are you supposed to figure these things out from the ground?"

Property rights
"Calm down, master will pay for it."

Personality
Amira’s a pampered kleptomaniac, who finds it difficult to pass up a shiny, even if it’s junk. As a kitsune, Amira is often revered; she loves abusing this privilege, viewing it as karmic retribution. Despite all this, she can be quite friendly and agreeable.
β €
Contract
Amira’s contract is for life, but she has no interest in escaping it. Her witch is her best friend and treats her well, ensuring she has good food and a comfy bed to sleep in. Their work is hard, but meaningful, as the two share aspirations of a shinier future.
Ginto Zinariya was a sharp-minded man who had nothing growing up… nothing but a dream. He dreamed of a world where he enjoyed the finest meals, the softest fabrics, the most dazzling clothes, and all on demand. That, he imagined, was the world according to an alchemy witch. That was the world he desired!

Each time he visited the local soup kitchen, he’d ask questions. How do transmute a potato? Why do you need water? What are things made of? He’d question them so incessantly, he’d often remain until the kitchen closed for the day. As he grew to be a young man, he became close friends with the charity working alchemists. Soon after he turned 18, they’d pool their funds, so he could learn more at the prestigious Asphodel University.

They presented Ginto with a pre-charged Potentia Crystal: something like a preloaded credit card for witch society. Overjoyed, he thanked them and ran outside, admiring the bright gleam within the crystal that indicated the huge value inside. Having never seen one so dazzlingly full, Ginto held it up, simply to admire its many colors.

Unfortunately, the gleam attracted the attention of a passing magpie, whoβ€” upon noticing the shiny object β€”immediately dove for it and snatched it from his hand. Ginto watched in horror as his scholarship flew away in the talons of this aggressive bird. Yet he was determined! He wouldn’t let his dream slip away like that!

The chase was wild: desperately tearing through crowds, sprinting down roads, even parkouring across buildings! The poor bird would land for a few seconds, but he’d always be on top of it, forcing yet another cross-city chase. This repeated itself several times, before he finally wore out the magpie enough to catch it… without the crystal! Where had the Stupid Bird left it!?

With the feisty bird cupped in his hands, a life-changing thought crossed his mind: at the academy, he’d need a familiar anyway, so why not just bind this magpie and command it to give him the crystal? Ginto got his crystal back, and as an alchemist, he could make tons of shinies for the Stupid Bird. And so, with no objections, the contract was formed, harsh words were exchanged with the now talking magpie, and the crystal was reclaimed.

After the initial anger wore off, the two actually hit it off! They both loved the glittery things in life, and the idea of turning rocks to gold excited both equally! With hopes high, Ginto proudly stepped into the school with Stupid Bird on his shoulder. However, the two were met with mocking smirks, jeers, and general derision. At first, Ginto assumed it was aimed at his simple clothes, but they quickly made known the reason…

Phoenix, Griffon, Ocean spirit, Sphinx… He wasn’t even sure what that lizard thing was, but… jeez, these people had incredible familiars! He had a Stupid Bird. The two would become the butt-end of every joke, even as Ginto excelled academically. As his mastery of manipulating the physical world grew, so too did the bullying, until one day he awoke to find Stupid Bird missing. Searching everywhere, he finally found the familiar, soaked with mud and stuck in a dumpster.

Having had enough, Ginto turned to his favorite tool: alchemy! Publicly, he lamented the supposed loss of his familiar, while in private, the two began the most complex alchemy experiment they’d ever attempted. A total transformation: one small, fluffy magpie into an elegant (but still fluffy) kitsune! Despite the risks, ambition and a desire to get even with their smug classmates pushed them forward until they’d done it.

The relatively tall, wingless body felt strange and foreign: simply walking took practice until it looked natural. Still, she adapted quickly, and after a few days, "Amira" was revealed to a shocked class, who were flabbergasted at how the street kid bonded with a mythical spirit so quickly.

"Don’t worry, Amira, you’ll always be Stupid Bird to me~! Oww!"
"Respect your amazing new kitsune familiar with a shiny new necklace!"
"Honestly, one week and you’re already a diva…"

Their contract expired as Ginto graduated from school, and they quickly formed a new one to bond for life. He continued pampering Amira with every luxury she asked for, while she helped Ginto to bring safer, cheaper transformation magic to market, right up to the point where he went missing.

Residual Alchemy Magic

Amira has nowhere near the skills of her witch, for whom the world is moldable clay. While she lacks that fundamental understanding and the magic power to apply it, she’s learned a few specific tricks that can be useful.

Fox form
Transform between fluffy animal and human with fluffy bits. Natural-born kitsune have this innate, spiritual ability, where Amira uses alchemy. The observant might notice a subtle difference.
Midas Ritual
With a lengthy chalk ritual, change an object to gold. Gold is somewhat valuable in Asphodel, but not nearly what it is outside witch society, thanks mostly to spells like this.

Biped Badge
Ginto's masterpiece, which transforms the wearer into a humanoid while worn, meant mostly to help familiars navigate a human-centric world. This is a temporary solution for others; Amira has no need of it.
Crystallization
Change organic matter to crystal on touch. Crystallization is considered one of the easiest forms of alchemy, but it can still be useful to reinforce things, orβ€” more importantly β€”make them shiny.

    Half- Human, Half-Kitsune
    Abilities

Pyrokinesis - Can generate and manipulate flames to attack foes. While normally, a Kitsune's adeptness at pyrokinesis increases with age, Izuna was denied the chance to improve her proficiency after she was sealed for over 300 years. She currently has above average proficiency.
Electrokinesis - Aside from fire, Kitsunes can also create and manipulate lightning to smite their opponents. Those who had more than four tails and had lived upwards of 400 years can create destructive lightning storms to deliver divine wrath upon those who had wronged them. Having only a single tail, however, Izuna's control and expertise with this magic is mediocre at best.
Illusion Magic - Kitsunes are one of the greatest practitioners of illusion magic. Legendary kitsune such as Tamamo-no-mae were said to craft illusions so elaborate that they are almost indistinguishable to reality.
Weapon Mastery - Izuna's father was once a distinguished samurai until he abandoned his duties in exchange of living a more peaceful life. However, he made sure to teach his daughter everything he knew about swordsmanship. While her magic skills may prove a bit lacking, she is an expert when it comes to swordplay.
Flight - Most kitsunes posses the ability to use flight magic, which improves with practice and age. However, Izuna has yet to master this magic, although she has supplemented this weakness by using a spell called "Air Walk" which allows her to momentarily float with each step and simulate walking on air.
Shapeshifting - Izuna can turn into a white fox, as well as alter her appearance to resemble a younger version of herself. She has yet to try turning into an older-looking version of her normal appearance.
Invisibility - Izuna can conceal her form and remain invisible for a set period of time. Legends say that powerful kitsune can reach a state of invisibility that completely erases their existence from those that had perceived them. While Izuna is centuries from reaching such mastery, she can remain invisible for up to five minutes at a time.
Possession - An ability that she particularly dislikes, Izuna can dominate the will of other creatures and take over their form. The success of possession depends on two things: 1.) the skill of the kitsune, and 2.) the strength of the target's will. While she can successfully take over most small to medium-sized animals, she doesn't have the skill nor the determination to possess humans.
    Weapons and Equipment.

Kitsune no Namida (Fox's Tear) - A sword that once belonged to Izuna's father, she inherited it after his death and has been her most reliable tool ever since.

The Conjuring Witch's Familiar

  • Name: Samuel
    Age: 200
    Gender/Pronouns: Male, He/Him
    Species: Fae
    Role: The Conjuring Witch’s Familiar

    ~Appearance~
    Hair/Fur color:
    Lavender
    Eye color: Green
    Height: 5'6"
    Weight: 140 lbs

Summary: Matching the color of his lavender skin, Samuel has a fluffy mane of hair that is tied into two braids on both sides of his head. Surrounded by dark sclera, his eyes cast a bright green glow. The one in the middle of his forehead is positioned vertically, always watching. Unlike the rest of his body, his hands and feet are a shadowy black, and smoke-like clouds occasionally flow from them whenever he alters his appearance.

Despite having nothing against humans and witches, past trauma has made him wary in their presence, so he prefers to take on a human form at times. His go-to appearance is a young man with porcelain skin. His face is framed by long, silver hair that is collected into a loose ponytail and a single braid on the side of his head. Naturally, his third eye is concealed, leaving only two green irises for people to see.

Identifying features

The beak of a frogmouth, the face and wings of a barn owl, the neck of a swan, the body of a dove, and the feet of a kingfisher. The only feature that isn't inspired by a real bird is her eyes, which feel like they've been drawn on by a kid. All except her face is overlaid with a neutral shade of rosy tan. There isn't a clear skeletal structure underneath her plumage, especially around her neck which continues to defy proper anatomy. Though her feathers follow a general sense of flow, they oscillate in whichever direction they please. Any finer details on her form continuously shift and crumble into an incomprehensible mess. Her height averages around 3 ft, however, due to the nature of her existence it often wavers from 5 ft to 2.

Personality overview

"Would you like something to eat, love?"

Tulpa, who was once by the name of Ms. Winnifred before her previous owner passed, was once a lively spirit who loved to make way for joy in every situation. Only able to experience life under the will of a witch, she persists to make the most out of her days and bring as much care as she can to those around her. Ever since she's made her contract with her witch though, this side of her had been somewhat silenced. In the hopes that her witch would approve of her and with the growing influence the Death Witch mustering on Tulpa's being, she wanted to stray from being too much of a nuisance.

It's hard for her to restrain from striking up conservations with others though. A quiet moment was always something that unnerved her. She hasn't noticed her habit to bounce from topic to topic yet.

Likes: Happy dancing movements, Music, Festivals,
Dislikes: Apathy, Prolonged Silence

Abilities

Her ever-shifting temporal physique is the magical enigma she brought to the table. As a tulpa, her existence is influenced by how others perceive her. This influence is strongly amplified by witches who've bonded with her, especially those who contract with her for life. Any others who have seen her while under contract will reinforce her current form, and everyone who interacted with her reinforces it even more so. Long-term memories held by perceivers are among the strongest forms of reinforcement and are often the last defense against a tulpa's true death.

When a witch first bonds with a tulpa, that witch's vision serves as the base for all other witches' visions. Therefore, their vision takes priority and will be the hardest to completely replace. The more a vision derives from the base form, the longer it will take to actually come to fruition. In Tulpa's case, she has been through three witches' lives, each with several people that hold memories of her. So, when Ulrich the Death Witch called for an epic servant that could break apart bone, the only suggestion that initially took hold of Tulpa's physique was the owl-esque qualities of her already avian appearance.

Without the bond of a witch, a tulpa will have to rely solely on the memories of living creatures, along with their belief that the tulpa is still around. Otherwise, they'll fall dormant into a state of limbo, eventually reducing to nothingness when no one lives to remember them anymore. It would take thousands of living beings actively perceiving a tulpa in order for them to muster a corporal body.

Apart from that, she wields no magic and can only rely on her feet to dig, her neck to reach, her wings to fly and her beak to grasp the materials her witch calls for.

A Brief Story

She couldn't remember when her last contract had been broken. Her senses had withered while her body dissipated into a mist of essence, leaving only decaying thoughts grasping onto a sense of being. Memories replayed in her mind so often until they had also started to wear thin and lose their form. Every time she'd try to reminisce on her time with her previous owners, they would all jumble up into vague sounds and watered-down imagery. She never knew if she was ever going to see the world again, or if she would feel the presence of another. Yet despite the fuzziness surrounding those, the nostalgic feelings of warmth, comfort, and love remained vivid. These were the memories that she would have taken to her grave, each and every time.

When she felt her mind brighten and heard a faint muttering, she was overjoyed. Another witch must've realized what she was. Slowly regaining the ability to process sound, she would've shouted when she could finally comprehend their words, but as the spiritual mist she was, she could only radiate in response to her new friend.
"What do you want in exchange, tulpa?"

Finally, she lived once more! Tulpa looked directly at her new owner, ready to thank her from the deepest part of her soul! But as she caught sight of Ulrich's face, it was clear that something had miffed her.

"I guess tulpamancy is a bit harder than I thought."

"Why? What's wrong?" Tulpa asked, but she quickly realized the reason why. Her face and her wings had changed but she still was the bird that she was since the beginning. "Oh! You must've been hoping for something different, yes? I apologize but it's going to take some time for your wish to come true, my witch!"

"...Whatever, It's fine I guess. Come on."

While Tulpa was grateful to be resurrected again, Ulrich felt a bit different than her last owners. The first time she set foot in her swamp it felt like a morgue. She was distant from her. She was practically a hermit, only coming out of her swamp on a few occasions. Most days Ulrich would send Tulpa to the village to gather materials and groceries while on others she'd just ask that she'd look around the swamp for anything that was died recently enough to work with. But the worst part was she was always quiet outside of ritual and spell work. Tulpa would try to make some sort of small talk with her, maybe get some sort of meaningful connection apart from their contract. However, the responses she'd get were one-worded and vague, the kind a mom would get when their kid didn't want to say anything. It worried Tulpa.

One particular night had hit a string for both of them, "Will you stop trying to talk to me?"

"But you don't look happy!"

Her witch gave her a long, disgruntled side-eye. "Listen, just because you don't hear my mouth running all day doesn't mean I'm not happy. If I had wanted someone to judge me, I would've just picked up any old human. I thought I wouldn't have to deal with that with you."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel that way."

"Tch."

"It's just that I'm not sensing the connection that we could have. I want there to be a sense of kinship, just like I used to have with my older masters."

"You still have memories of your former witch?"

"All three of them! They're quite vague, but their lives I hold very dear to!"

"...So that's why it's been taking you so long to shift." The look of disappointment Tulpa's seen all too often surfaced on Ulrich's face. "I should have just resurrected a corpse. The thought of building my own familiar intrigued me, but it seemed too good to be true after all."

"Oh..."

Ulrich paused for a moment, weighing her options on what to do next. A moment later she came to her decision, a decision that shocked the tulpa. "I don't think this is going to work out. I'll just break the contract and we can be over it."

"I, didn't know you could do that-"

"Weren't you listening while I was offering our contract? All I need to do is utter five words and it'll be voided. If you didn't like it, then you shouldn't have agreed to it."

The lingering dread in her intensified. "Please don't leave me... I don't want to disappear."

Although confusion flashed on the witch's face, it suddenly clicked. Tulpa could have sworn she caught sight of a sliver of sympathy from the death witch, a side of her she's rarely seen. "I'll help you look for another witch for you then. For tonight, I need you to go gather bones. There's a ritual I'm hoping to try."

Tulpa spent the rest of that night doing as her owner asked, gathering any type of bone she could find. But we she returned to their hut in the morning, she was nowhere to be found. Tulpa wasn't too worried at first, albeit she was a bit confused. She never mentioned that she was leaving on her own. It only escalated into fear when she didn't return the next night, and the night after.
