In all there are six major factions to join.
The Flat tops are one of three vault factions, their vault was filled with guns, ammunition, and few resources. They have the strongest soldiers but the most untaught as well.
The Pixies are another vault faction that are made up of only females. Using stored human genes they are asexual or at least most of them are. Whenever a boy is born they give him away to any small faction unless the mother wants to keep him in which she is exiled. They are the balance between knowledge and fire power.
Pad Locks are the last vault faction. When they were locked away they were given very basic pistols and a few assault rifles with enough ammunition to last a few clips. What they lack in fire power they make up with their knowledge of medicine, botany, farming, and science. They have the least amount of soldiers but have the highest intelligence.
As for the last three major three factions, the NCR, BoS, and the Enclave, their history is unknown to the locals and all the locals can do is either find friends or find enemies.
